Description: We conducted a multiple-stressor experiment to evaluate the response of the still poorly studied key Antarctic cryptophyte species Geminigera cryophila (CCMP 2564, isolated from the Southern Ocean and obtained from Matt Johnson's Laboratory of Protistan Ecology at the Woods Hole Oceanography Institute, United States) to warming in combination with ocean acidification and high irradiance. Based on the thermal growth response of G. cryophila, we grew the cryptophyte at suboptimal (2°C) and optimal (4°C) temperatures in combination with two light intensities (medium light: 100 μmol photons/m**2/s and high light [HL]: 500 μmol photons/m**2/s) under ambient (400 μatm pCO2) and high pCO2 (1000 μatm pCO2) conditions.

Description: Ocean warming and acidification will be most pronounced in the Arctic. Both phenomena severely threaten thecosome pteropods (holoplanktonic marine gastropods) by reducing their survival (warming) and causing the dissolution of their aragonitic shell (acidification). Lipids, particularly phospholipids, play a major role in veligers and juveniles of the polar thecosome pteropod Limacina helicina comprising more than two-thirds of their total lipids. Membrane lipids (phospholipids) are important for the temperature acclimation of ectotherms. Hence, we experimentally investigated ocean warming and acidification effects on total lipids, lipid classes, and fatty acids of Arctic early-stage L. helicina. The temperature and pCO2 treatments chosen resembled Representative Concentration Pathway model scenarios for this century. We found a massive decrease in total lipids at elevated temperatures and at the highest CO2 concentration (1,100 μatm) of the in situ temperature. Clearly, temperature was the overriding factor. Total lipids were reduced by 47%–70%, mainly caused by a reduction of phospholipids by up to 60%. Further, based on pHT development in the incubation water of pteropods during the experiment, some evidence exists for metabolic downregulation in pteropods at high factor levels of temperature and pCO2. Consequently, the cell differentiation and energy balance of early-stage larvae were probably severely compromised. Comparison of our experimental with 'wild' organisms suggests phospholipid reduction to values clearly outside natural variability. Based on the well-known significance of phospholipids for membranogenesis, early development, and reproduction, negative warming effects on such a basal metabolic function may be a much more immediate threat for pteropods than so far anticipated shell dissolution effects due to acidification.

Description: Raw data acquired by position sensors on board RV Polarstern during expedition PS140 was processed to receive a validated master track which can be used as reference of further expedition data. During PS140 two Trimble Marine R750 GPS receivers and the iXBlue HYDRINS hydrographic survey inertial navigation system were used as navigation sensors. Data were downloaded from DAVIS SHIP data base (https://dship.awi.de) with a resolution of 1 sec. Processed data are provided as a master track with 1 sec resolution derived from the position sensors' data selected by priority and a generalized track with a reduced set of the most significant positions of the master track.

The cruise was part of the 5-year MARSYS teaching cruise program of the University of Hamburg GFP20-1_047. All single fish measurements were made directly on board. Full wet weights of cod were measured and subsequently cod were gutted and liver weights, gonad weights and sexes, gutted wet weights (i.e., gutted wet mass), gonad stages and liver nematode infestations were recorded, and Otoliths were taken.

Description: Concentrations of alkalinity (TA) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in porewater as well as in surface water measured during timeseries (fixed location) and spatial surveys (fixed time period) were compiled from 38 mangrove- and 8 saltmarsh-dominated creeks and estuaries. We used data from creeks that were predominantly surrounded by mangrove or saltmarsh vegetation and with minimal confounding factors such as mixed vegetation or large catchments. These creeks were located in either pristine or anthropologically impacted estuaries or coastal areas. Anthropologically impacted areas were defined as areas that were affected by nearby urban or agricultural activities, potentially delivering pollutants, e.g., sewage or fertilizers, to creeks. We also included pristine mangrove- and saltmarsh dominated estuaries. When available, environmental parameters were also recorded, i.e., season, salinity, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), water level, porewater tracer radon (222Rn), partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), particulate organic carbon (POC), nitrate and nitrite (NOx), ammonium (NH4), total nitrogen (TN), phosphate (PO4), and total phosphorus (TP). Methods used to determine parameters are explained in each corresponding reference.
