    Description: During the past decade, the superhydrophobic surfaces, bio-inspired non-wettable surfaces, have aroused worldwide interest. The super water-repellant surface has special characteristics such as low surface energy as well as hierarchical micro/nano surface roughness. These surfaces have many practical applications, from industrial to biomedical applications, including water/oil separation, self-cleaning, drag reduction, anti-fogging, anti-bacterial, anti-fouling, anti-icing, corrosion resistance, as well as many applications in industries such as marine, oil, and gas, aerospace, biomedicine etc. This book presents knowledge on the field of application of superhydrophobic surfaces. Superhydrophobicity has become a hot topic in the academics as well as industries in different engineering and biomedicine research fields.

    Description: This book explores a diversity of topics related to radiometric dating, with particular emphasis on the method of radiocarbon dating and a cross-check of its results with luminescence measurements. Starting from the chapter on Methodology the book includes, among other topics, the description of the problem of preparation of samples for 14C measurement, a wide application of the radiocarbon method and a comparison of results obtained by various methods, including the radiocarbon method, the method of OSL, TL and palynology.     Description: Thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs), commonly known as thermoplastic rubbers, are a category of copolymers having thermoplastic and elastomeric characteristics. A TPE is a rubbery material with properties very close to those of conventional vulcanized rubber at normal conditions. It can be processed in a molten state even at elevated temperatures. TPEs show advantages typical of both rubbery materials and plastic materials. TPEs are a class of polymers bridging between the service properties of elastomers and the processing properties of thermoplastics. Nowadays, the best use of thermoplastics is in the field of biomedical applications, starting from artificial skin to many of the artificial human body parts.     Description: One of the problems with modern public health is target searching for new highly effective medicinal preparations. Among those medicinal preparations are the natural and synthetic origins of quinazolinone-4 derivatives. Quinazolinone derivatives are reported to be physiologically and pharmacologically active. They also exhibit a wide range of activities such as anticonvulsant, antiinflammatory, antifungal, antimalarial, and sedative properties. Some of these compounds are identified as drugs used as diuretics, vasodilators, and antihypertensive agents. Moreover, sulfonamide derivatives have been widely used as bacteriostatic agents. Prompted by the above-mentioned facts and in conjunction with our ongoing program on the utility of readily obtainable starting material for the synthesis of heterocyclic systems of biological interest, we have decided to synthesize a series of quinazolinone derivatives having sulfonamide moiety with a potentially wide spectrum of biological responses.

    Description: Organochlorines (OC) are organic molecules with chlorine in their structure. There is a large number of organochlorine compounds known. Large amounts of chlorinated organic compounds are produced for industrial, agricultural, pharmaceutical, household purposes, etc. In many studies, the main focus is on OC that have been evaluated as environmental contaminants with toxic effects on humans. Different types of organochlorines have been produced throughout the world. Some of the most popular classes are organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxins, chlorobenzenes, chlorophenols, chlorinated alkanes, etc. Organochlorine compounds are very stable. Generally, they are molecules of moderate polarity (low solubility in water). This makes OCs easily soluble in fats. They are found in almost all environments: air, water, soil, sediments and biota samples. They can spread out easily in different geographic altitudes and latitudes. Volatile and semi-volatile OCs have the ability to travel far distances from the place where they were used. Some studies have reported some organochlorines in the North Pole at the same levels as the areas where they were produced or applied. They have the ability to bioaccumulate easily in biota. Passing through the food chain levels, they increase their concentrations (biomagnifying). The main access pathways for OCs to the human body are through foods and exposures. Generally, they display their effects after a relatively long period of exposure. This is the main reason why they were produced and used for a long time before their production and use was banned. The most important health effects that organochlorines can cause are: mutagenic, endocrine-disruptor, carcinogenic and central nervous or peripheral disorders. After identification of the consequences, production of OCs and use was banned in many countries but their effects are still being seen many years later.

    Description: Pyrolysis is an irreversible thermochemical treatment process of materials at elevated temperatures in an inert atmosphere.     Description: Low-temperature non-equilibrium gaseous discharges represent nearly ideal media for boosting plasma-based chemical reactions. In these discharges the energy of plasma electrons, after being received from the electromagnetic field, is transferred to the other degrees of freedom differently, ideally with only a small part going to the translational motion of heavy gas particles. This unique property enables the important application of non-equilibrium plasmas for greenhouse gas conversion. While the degree of discharge non-equilibrium often defines the energetic efficiency of conversion, other factors are also of a great importance, such as type of discharge, presence of plasma catalysis, etc. This book is focused on the recent achievements in optimization and understanding of non-equilibrium plasma for gas conversion via plasma modeling and experimental work.

The second section, Ionic Liquids, shows information about the synthesis, physicochemical characterization and exploration of antimicrobial activities of imidazolium ionic liquid-supported Schiff base and its transition metal complexes, the technology of heterogenization of transition metal catalysts towards the synthetic applications in an ionic liquid matrix, the progress in ionic liquids as reaction media, monomers, and additives in high-performance polymers, a pre-screening of ionic liquids as gas hydrate inhibitor via application of COSMO-RS for methane hydrate, the extraction of aromatic compounds from their mixtures with alkanes from ternary to quaternary (or higher) systems and a review on ionic liquids as environmental benign solvent for cellulose chemistry. The final section, Solvent Effects, displays interesting information on solvent effects on dye sensitizers derived from anthocyanidins for applications in photocatalysis, about the solvent effect on a model of SNAr reaction in conventional and non-conventional solvents, and on solvent effects in supramolecular systems.
