    Description: In publishing this book, an early version of which was first published under the auspices of the Academy of Athens, the French School at Athens highlights the research work of Aspasia Louvi-Kizi, an eminent specialist in the Frank and Byzantine Peloponnese, whose work reveals all of the complexity of the architectural forms, influences and models at work in the monuments of the medieval Byzantine city of Mystras. Out of all of the architecture created by the despotic couple formed by Manuel Cantacuzène (1349-1380) and his wife Isabelle de Lusignan, who were instrumental in turning Mystras into a centre of power, Aspasia Louvi-Kizi focuses on two of the city’s most iconic monuments, the monasteries of Peribleptos and Pantanassa, proposing a new history of their construction. Their architecture incorporates elements of Frank art, meaning western or gothic art, which were foreign to the local Byzantine tradition. The gothic aspect of Mystras’ architecture, as distinct from the Franco-Byzantine influences in the neighbouring crusader principality of Achaea, has more to do with Western art in Cyprus, and its introduction by Isabelle to the Peloponnese was to prove decisive. The Western elements that decorate the facades of clocks and towers, combined with the Byzantine features to constitute a concrete expression of the despotic couple’s pro-Western politics, in line with the imperial politics of Constantinople at the time. In the fragmented and multipolar world of the Eastern Mediterranean on the eve of the Ottoman conquest, this book highlights the role Mystras played as a centre of power in the region and, in doing so, contributes to a fresh take on the city as a whole. By continuing the international conversation about a renowned site, the French School at Athens shows its commitment to a multi-layered approach that reveals the complexity of the interactions at work in the history of the Greek world in transition.

    Description: The question of how to maintain the continuity of diplomacy while developing democracy without military intervention is an old and new issue. The challenge can be described as a dilemma between democracy and diplomatic coherence. This dilemma is not unique to the twenty-first century; it has been a constant challenge to the development of democracy. In non-Western countries, democratisation originated in the nineteenth century and has had many successes and failures. After the Russo-Japanese War, political parties began to take power in Japan. The best embodiment of diplomacy in Japan's emerging democracy—the development of parliamentary democracy and mass-based democracy—is Shidehara Kijūrō (1872–1951), who served as foreign minister from 1924 to 1927 and from 1929 to 1931, and was prime minister from 1945 to 1946. As a diplomat from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Shidehara had long grappled with the issue of how to ensure diplomatic coherence in modern Japan, which was becoming increasingly democratic. Although Shidehara succeeded to some extent in promoting diplomacy in cooperation with the US and the UK under party politics, the rise of the military after the Manchurian Incident forced him to retire for a period. However, after the Pacific War, Shidehara became prime minister of the US-occupied Japan and attempted to restore cooperative diplomacy under party politics. Shidehara came to the conclusion that the way to achieve both democracy and diplomatic coherence was through nonpartisan diplomacy towards peace. This book examines the tension between diplomacy and democracy, focusing on Shidehara’s life and exploring modern Japan’s footsteps. Shidehara was undoubtedly one of Japan’s most important diplomatic figures.

Processi al maestro Amedeo Landi is the result of the discovery of unpublished documentation on the trials - only partly known - against the abacus master Amedeo Landi, who taught the Milanese merchants at the Broletto. This is an exceptional case not only because only one witness to the activity of the Milanese inquisitorial court in the Middle Ages (whose documentation has been entirely lost) was known until now, but also because of the role of the ecclesiastical court and its officials. The wealth of information and themes has prompted a team effort by the professors of the Department of Historical Studies to clarify the many aspects (political, religious, economic, documentary) of an event that shows the vitality of 15th-century Milan, in which the protagonist, the teacher Amedeo Landi, in an attempt to protect his students, clashes with the most important preacher of his time, Brother Bernardino of Siena, whose canonisation process is temporarily blocked precisely to shed light on the Milanese episode.

Si tratta di un caso eccezionale non solo perché finora si conosceva un solo testimone dell’attività del tribunale inquisitoriale milanese nel medioevo (la cui documentazione è andata interamente perduta), ma anche per il ruolo del tribunale ecclesiastico e dei suoi funzionari. La ricchezza delle informazioni e dei temi ha suggerito un lavoro d’équipe dei docenti del Dipartimento di studi storici per chiarire i molteplici aspetti (politici, religiosi, economici, documentari) di una vicenda che mostra la vitalità della Milano quattrocentesca, in cui il protagonista, il maestro Amedeo Landi, nel tentativo di tutelare i suoi studenti si scontra con il più importante predicatore del suo tempo, frate Bernardino da Siena, il cui processo di canonizzazione viene momentaneamente bloccato proprio per fare luce sull’episodio milanese.

    Description: The art of printing with movable type made its appearance in Perugia -then as now, the heart of Italy- in 1471, when the city was under the sway of Braccio Baglioni. Perugia was home to an important university which had been attracting students from all over Europe for more than a century. They found hospitality in two colleges, of which the ‘Sapienza Vecchia’, in particular, was accustomed to accommodating students from abroad. The colleges were themselves instrumental in assisting the work of the earliest printers, all of them foreigners; their enterprise flourished for about fifteen years before strong competition from larger printing centres, notably Venice, took control of the Perugian book market. A second phase in local book production started at the turn of the century under the aegis of two major players, the Cartolari family and Bianchino dal Leone. The history of the book in Perugia is characterized by a quality and originality which is not reflected in the modest quantities produced there, and the major bibliographers have always taken an interest in it. All that and more can be found in this book, the outcome of lengthy research based on detailed analysis of all known editions and archival documents, including a number of new discoveries.

    Description: Ce volume est le quatrième d’une série d’ouvrages portant sur « Statuts, écritures et pratiques sociales dans les sociétés de la Méditerranée occidentale à la fin du Moyen Âge (XIIe-XVe siècle) », visant à étudier les statuts communaux dans une optique d’histoire sociale, non pas comme une source « normative » mais comme une source de la pratique, de leur matérialité et de leur forme d’écriture aux pratiques sociales en passant par les conditions de leur production et de conservation, leur inscription dans un paysage documentaire communal, leur structure et leur contenu. Ce dernier ouvrage s’intéresse aux statuts « vus de l’extérieur » c’est-à-dire au rapport entre le texte statutaire et sa mise en jeu dans des pratiques sociales concrètes, mais aussi à la manière dont les acteurs médiévaux se posent la question de l’usage de la norme, aux divers moments documentaires où ils font référence ou allèguent explicitement les statuts dans leurs pratiques. Il n’est donc question de statuts qu’à travers d’autres documents, qu’ils fassent partie du paysage documentaire communal (délibérations communales, registres de justice, registres de compte, criées, épigraphie, iconographie, etc.) ou qu’ils soient élaborés en marge des écrits de gouvernement (registres notariés, testaments, récits de miracles, procès de canonisation, sources narratives, chroniques, etc.). Le but est de repérer, d’analyser et d’étudier la manière dont les normes statutaires se sont diffusées – ou pas –, ont été appliquées – ou pas – dans les pratiques politiques, économiques et sociales de la commune : comment ont-elles été validées, reproduites, conservées, diffusées ?     Description: The Margins of Late Medieval London is a powerful study of medieval London’s urban fringe.     Description: Competent adult internet users voluntarily disclose vast amounts of personal data. As such disclosure can cause great harm, governments may feel that through minor interventions they can protect their citizens from disclosure that is not in the latters' best interest. However, such actions can infringe upon the rights of the users' and of the data collectors', and are only licit when justified. Neither the German nor the US government has the duty or the power to coerce the privacy choices of competent adult users for the sole purpose of protecting them against dangers caused by themselves. Instead, it is suggested that governments should focus on limiting specific harmful disclosure.

    Description: In 1907, the city of Heredia became the epicenter of the most important religious conflict experienced by Costa Rica in the 20th century. A complaint that the theory of evolution was being taught in the Lyceum (i.e. secondary school) of that city, triggered an increasingly intense confrontation between the Catholic parishioners and the circle of young radical intellectuals articulating around the writer and educator Roberto Brenes Mesén. In the course of this process, Costa Rican society, to the alarm of the government of Cleto González Víquez, was the scene of popular mobilizations in defense of the faith, excommunications and burning of impious texts, while Catholic morality was systematically questioned based on sexual abuse attributed to priests. For a moment, it seemed that the country had gone back in time, and that the ghosts of 1884 were present.

En aquestes cartes trobem en primera persona l’impacte psicològic de la derrota, dels judicis sumaríssims i de l’empresonament, la por i la incertesa de cada dia, la penúria, la privació emocional de l’allunyament de la família, la frustració de no poder exercir cap rol familiar. Alhora, la voluntat de sobreviure física i moralment, que va ser una voluntat política, i els mecanismes i estratègies que van fer que molts ho aconseguissin, des de l’ajut de fora i la solidaritat a dins, fins a la capacitat de cadascú per mantenir alguna il·lusió i la fe en el futur.

    Description: The organisation of the territory is the outcome of strategies of varying scope, in which a number of agents interact to shape out the areas of operation. The Liguria reality is probed here through four different situations - separated in chronological terms but sharing the poor visibility and limited efficacy of the fortified settlements. These focus on Genoa, both in the definition of its hinterland between the tenth and the eleventh centuries, and in establishing the bulwarks of coastal territorial expansion in the twelfth; the powerful groups of feudal lords who remoulded the rural settlement layout in the thirteenth century; finally, a village of the hinterland explored right through to the modern age.

    Description: The different theoretical notions and practices of the relations between the state and religious communities in early modern Europe constitute one of the most interesting problems in historiography. Moving away from a simple «toleration» versus «non-toleration» dichotomy, the author sets out to analyse the inter-confessional relations in selected European territories in a «longue duree» perspective, between Reformation and Enlightenment. Outlining the relations between the state and the different Churches (confessions) in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Holy Roman Empire of Germany, and the Northern Netherlands serves to highlight the specificity of Northern Netherlands serves to highlight the specificity of «free» (non-absolutist) composite states, where the particularly complex process of defining the raison d’etat determined the level of religious toleration that was politically feasible and socially acceptable.

This book takes a close look at the aristocracy’s understanding of a free constitution and at the nobility’s complex relationship with the monarchy. Central themes are the old notion of mixed government, classical republican conceptions of liberty and patriotism, as well as noble thoughts on the rights and duties of the citizen, including the right to rebellion against an unrighteous ruler. The study is a conceptual analysis of public and private political statements made by members of the nobility, such as Diet speeches and personal correspondence.     Description: What are the effects of internal migration controls on migrants without a regular residence permit – on “sans papiers”? The book gives an answer to this question with a comparative study of the United States and Germany. Based on expert interviews and in-depth interviews with forty sans papiers, police controls as well as controls in areas such as labor market, health care, housing, schooling and childcare are carefully analysed. The book discusses whether global economic, political or social processes have restricted the ability of advanced capitalist countries to control migration. It argues that migration policy in the OECD countries has become more similar, but this convergence only takes place at the level of policy goals and legal norms. At the level of implementation, national differences persist. The interviews show that sans papiers in the U.S. continue to have many possibilities to participate in society. In contrast, the comprehensive exclusion of sans papiers in Germany confi rms that there is no general “loss of control”.

Dieser Frage geht das Buch mit einem Vergleich zwischen den Vereinigten Staaten und Deutschland nach. Anhand von Expertengesprächen und vierzig qualitativen Interviews mit Sans Papiers werden polizeiliche Kontrollen und Kontrollen in den Bereichen Arbeitsmarkt, Gesundheitsversorgung, Wohnen sowie Schule und Kinderbetreuung eingehend untersucht. Das Buch diskutiert, ob globale ökonomische, politische und soziale Prozesse die Fähigkeit von Nationalstaaten einschränken, Migration zu kontrollieren. Es wird gezeigt, dass sich die Migrationspolitik der OECDStaaten in den vergangenen Jahren zwar auf der Ebene der Leitlinien und Gesetze angeglichen hat. Bei der Implementation von Kontrollen bestehen aber nationale Unterschiede fort. Die Interviews belegen, dass Sans Papiers in den USA weiterhin vielfältige Möglichkeiten zur gesellschaftlichen Partizipation haben. Im Gegenzug zeigt das Beispiel Deutschland, dass angesichts der weitgehenden Exklusion von Sans Papiers keine Rede von einem »Kontrollverlust« sein kann.

    Description: In the monography Auf die Tour, I analyze the participation of Jews in popular culture in Vienna, Budapest and New York. I argue that entertainment in vaudevilles was shaped between the perception of difference and similarity, between human trafficking, covert prostitution, anti-Semitism and nationalism. Ultimately, my research shows how a space for Jewish-non-Jewish people was created in the coinciding of the mass migration movement and the emerging mass culture between the Habsburg Monarchy and the United States.

    Description: Au début du siècle dernier, le sultan du Maroc vient de signer un traité qui place désormais son pays sous le protectorat de la France (30 mars 1912). À l’ombre du maréchal Lyautey, un sultan de substitution, totalement soumis aux nouveaux maîtres français, a été proclamé. Cependant, nombreux sont ceux qui, au Maroc, refusent le fait accompli et se révoltent face à la mainmise étrangère sur le pays. Ainsi, dans le Sud marocain, Moulay Ahmed el Hiba, fils d’un marabout ouest-saharien (Ma el Aïnin), se fait proclamer sultan du Jihad en 1912 ; une première fois à Tiznit, la seconde à Marrakech. Ces événements ont donné naissance à un mouvement qui pendant plus de vingt ans (1912-1934) symbolisera pour ces populations berbères et ouest-sahariennes la résistance à l’avancée inéluctable des troupes coloniales françaises et espagnoles. Fondée sur une analyse croisée d’archives inédites, aussi bien françaises que marocaines, l’auteur fait la lumière sur un événement fondateur de la conquête coloniale du Maroc. Mythifiée, récupérée ou occultée, la figure fondatrice du mouvement hibiste est encore aujourd’hui le sujet d’un conflit mémoriel ayant pour objet l’Ouest saharien.

The texts gathered here, and signed by major thinkers of the time (Rousseau, Montesquieu, Voltaire, Kant, Hume or Staël for instance), as well as by writers history has forgotten, present the reflections, with a couple of chronological extensions (from Sully to Victor Hugo) of authors from the long eighteenth century—the French Empire and the fall of Napoleon generated numerous upheavals—on Europe, its history, its diversity, but also on what the nations, which, in all their diversity, make up a geographical unit, have in common. They show the historical origins of the project of a European union, the desire to consolidate the continent’s ties to the Maghreb or to Turkey, the importance granted to commerce and the worries engendered by history’s convulsions, but also the hope vested in future generations.
    Description: Angesichts der aktuellen Herausforderungen – nicht zuletzt politischer Natur – mit denen sich viele europäische Staaten konfrontiert sehen, haben sich die Aufklärungsforscher entschlossen, auf die Geschichte der Europaidee zurückzukommen. Bereits im 18. Jahrhundert und zuvor besann man sich auf gemeinsame Werte und eine gemeinsame Geschichte; die damals gestellten Fragen ähneln in vielen Bereichen den heutigen. Die Autoren und Philosophen der Aufklärung haben so bereits über die Möglichkeiten einer europäischen Einigung zwecks Sicherung des Friedens auf dem Kontinent nachgedacht. Die Texte der vorliegenden Anthologie, verfasst sowohl von den großen Denkern der Zeit (Rousseau, Montesquieu, Voltaire, Kant, Hume oder Germaine de Staël) wie auch von weniger bekannten oder gar in Vergessenheit geratenen, präsentieren, mit einigen chronologischen Exkursen (von Sully bis Victor Hugo), die Ideen der Denker eines weit gefassten 18. Jahrhunderts zu Europa, seiner Geschichte, seiner Vielfalt, aber auch zu den Gemeinsamkeiten der Nationen, die trotz ihrer Vielfalt eine geographische Einheit bilden.     Description: Germany has gradually become Europe's largest immigration country and is increasingly shaped by the image of a multicultural and multilingual society. However, the issue of multilingualism receives little attention, especially with regard to Slavic migration idioms. The aim of the present study is the empirical investigation of the current language behavior of Slavophone immigrants and the determination of the vitality of their native languages. On the basis of a nationwide survey of 500 immigrants detailed microsociological data on the use of Slavic languages ​​depending on persons, topics and situations will be collected and the influence of linguistic ecological factors such as attitudes, motivations, identity and social network of speakers on language use and language content will be investigated. In addition, on the basis of interdisciplinary approaches to the description of linguistic minorities, the vitality of slavins is analyzed comparatively, showing the current situation and the future development of Slavia in Germany in general and specific tendencies of ethnolects in particular.
    Description: Deutschland hat sich sukzessive zum größten Einwanderungsland Europas entwickelt und wird immer stärker vom Bild einer multikulturellen und multilingualen Gesellschaft geprägt. Dem Thema Mehrsprachigkeit aber wird insbesondere in Bezug auf slavische Migrationsidiome nur wenig Beachtung geschenkt. Ziel der vorliegenden Studie ist die empirische Erforschung des aktuellen Sprachverhaltens slavophoner Immigranten und die Bestimmung der Vitalität ihrer Muttersprachen. Anhand einer deutschlandweiten Enquete unter 500 Zuwanderern werden detaillierte mikrosoziologische Daten zum Gebrauch der slavischen Sprachen in Abhängigkeit von Personen, Themen und Situationen erhoben und der Einfluss sprachökologischer Faktoren wie Attitüden, Motivationen, Identität und soziales Netzwerk der Sprecher auf die Sprachverwendung und den Spracherhalt untersucht. Zudem wird auf der Grundlage interdisziplinärer Ansätze zur Beschreibung von Sprachminderheiten die Vitalität der Slavinen komparativ analysiert, womit die gegenwärtige Situation und die zukünftige Entwicklung der Slavia in Deutschland im Allgemeinen und spezifische Tendenzen der Ethnolekte im Besonderen aufgezeigt werden.

    Description: La figure du baiser occupe une place de choix dans les romans de Mary Shelley (1797-1851), femme de lettres anglaise traditionnellement attachée au courant romantique. Cet ouvrage veut contribuer à la connaissance, encore trop peu développée en France, de cette romancière, par le biais d’une figure littéraire qui entretient un rapport fort à la littérature en général et au romantisme en particulier. Il s’agira d’étudier les modalités de la représentation du baiser dans les sept romans que Mary Shelley produisit entre 1818 et 1837. Figure de la rencontre de deux subjectivités, le baiser se décline sur un mode sensible, mythique et philosophique chez la romancière. Au terme de ce parcours, c’est une figure bien particulière de l’écrivain qui sera (re)découverte.

    Description: This chapter examines the writings of the renowned late-eighteenth-century Moroccan ambassador Ibn Uthmân Al-Meknassî, the first known traveller from his country to leave an account of European quarantine as experienced during his two diplomatic missions in Spain’s Ceuta (1779) and Malta’s Valletta (1782). It shows that quarantine, on the one hand, acted as a marker of otherness by which Ibn Othman was identified as a Muslim, though this was not a uniform process, owing to the fact that significant differences existed in the degree of alterity experienced in Spain and Malta, and indeed other parts of the Mediterranean. The subjective opinion on quarantine, on the other hand, was also one of the means through which Ibn Uthmân situated himself within Makhzen (Moroccan government) elites at a time when a division between those who declared themselves in favour of European-style modernisation and those who advocated a rejection of European novelties was already visible.

    Description: "An Equal Burden forms the first scholarly study of the Army Medical Services in the First World War to focus on the roles and experiences of the men of the ranks of the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC). These men, through their work as stretcher bearers and orderlies, provided a range of labour, both physical and emotional, in aid of the sick and wounded. They were not professional medical caregivers, yet were called upon to provide medical care, however rudimentary; they served in uniform, under military discipline, yet were forbidden, as non-combatants, from carrying weapons. Their service as men in wartime, was thus unique. Structured both chronologically and thematically, this study examines both the work that RAMC rankers undertook and its importance to the running of the chain of medical evacuation. It additionally explores the gendered status of these men within the medical, military and cultural hierarchies of a society engaged in total war, locating their service within the context of that of doctors, female nurses and combatant servicemen. Through close readings of official documents, personal papers, and cultural representations, both verbal and visual, it argues that the ranks of the RAMC formed a space in which non-commissioned servicemen, through their many roles, defined and redefined medical caregiving as men’s work in wartime."

    Description: Aux xvie et xviie siècles, l’ordre européen était parfois menacé par des crises d’origine régionale. Ces désordres venaient des initiatives scandaleuses d’acteurs politiques habituellement peu présents sur la scène internationale (municipalités, institutions provinciales, seigneurs locaux). Pour résoudre des conflits internes, parfois contre leur propre souverain, ces acteurs n’hésitaient pas à appeler des puissances étrangères à leur secours, dans des logiques de solidarités politico-religieuses internationales. Les « affaires de Provence» (1580-1598) permettent de comprendre le fonctionnement de ce type de crises. Au plus fort des guerres de Religion en France, les catholiques de Provence appelèrent à leur secours le duc de Savoie, le grand-duc de Toscane, les papes et le roi d’Espagne. Parce que la Provence avait une position stratégique entre Barcelone et Gênes, d’autres puissances intervinrent à leur tour: l’Angleterre, l’Empire ottoman, le duché de Lorraine et la République de Venise.     Description: On 24 May 1966, eight hundred men of the 5th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment, landed at Nui Dat, in Viet Cong territory. For the next 12 months they were faced with the task of restoring peace, civil law and regular commerce to the Vietnamese of Phuoc Tuy province. This book is a detailed record of those months in the monsoon jungles—of the problems that were faced and the solutions that were found. Captain O’Neill’s position as battalion intelligence officer enabled him to view the war from the standpoint of the battalion as a whole. However, he does not omit description of personal feelings—towards the Viet Cong, the jungle environment and the Vietnamese people, as well as the other Allied forces involved in the war. Most of the book was written on the spot in Vietnam. On operations or at Battalion Headquarters, Captain O’Neill jotted down details of the war against the Viet Cong, putting the events of each day in order, often in the small hours of the following morning. Thus not only is this a factual account of the 5th Battalion’s activities over the year; it is also a vivid and compelling picture of the war in Vietnam from the soldier’s point of view.

Sein Privatnachlass in Hohenfinow nordöstlich von Berlin wurde beim Vormarsch der Roten Armee 1945 vernichtet. Ziel der Edition ist es, die verschollenen Dokumente zu rekonstruieren. Etwa 2000 Stück, die meisten unveröffentlicht, konnten in verschiedenen Archiven ausfindig gemacht werden, z. B. im Politischen Archiv des Auswärtigen Amtes und im Bundesarchiv Berlin. Sie korrigieren das Bild dieses in der deutschen und internationalen Geschichtswissenschaft zumeist verkannten Kriegskanzlers in zahlreichen wesentlichen Zügen. Bethmann Hollweg verfügte über einen tiefen Blick in die Bewegungen der Zeit. Diesen ausgeprägten Vorausblick hatten in der neueren deutschen Geschichte neben ihm nur ganz wenige Kanzler wie Bismarck und Adenauer.

En rééditant les Principes régénérateurs du systême social, opuscule publié en pluviôse an III (janvier-février 1795), peu de temps avant la déportation de l’auteur à Cayenne, on souhaite ici éclairer un moment essentiel dans l’élaboration de la « synthèse républicaine ». C’est aussi « une nouvelle manière d’écrire l’histoire de la Révolution française » (Michel Vovelle). Un retour critique au texte met en lumière, d’une part, l’acculturation d’un révolutionnaire de premier plan, d’autre part, les thèmes récurrents du discours jacobin. L’essai de Billaud-Varenne est, en effet, une expression du projet montagnard d’« institutions civiles ». Projet d’un lien social pour « mettre en action la morale » et « la donner pour base à la politique », espérance d’un nouvel espace public de réciprocité fraternelle où la citoyenneté compte au rang des droits naturels. Ainsi se dévoile une philosophie de la Révolution française qui n’est pas sans rapport avec la pensée allemande contemporaine de l’événement révolutionnaire.

    Description: This chapter explores the transmission of tales of the supernatural during the very long eighteenth century (between c.1660 and c.1832). A genre of publications on this subject which have not been studied are those anthologies of supposedly true stories, usually relating to named people and places and sometimes dated, often each numbered separately, with relatively little discussion of their authenticity or significance, beyond perhaps a brief preface defending the reality of the world of spirits. A series of entrepreneurial publishers, mostly operating from Paternoster Row in London, experimented with anthologising these stories in varied combinations. Any attempt to analyse the stories must begin by unravelling the publishing history by which they were transmitted and (not fully studied here) modified and retold, as well as re-interpreted.

To fill the gap, this bookreconstructs the most important factors in childhood in Byzantium from the 6th through the 11th century. The main sources are the lives of the saints, which are of central importance for the analysis of the social history and daily life of the population. They also provide an insight into family, social and economic structures, as well as patterns of behaviour. This material is supplemented by legal, medical, theological and other sources.

    Description: Les relations entre les États-Unis et l’Unesco ont toujours été complexes comme le démontre l’étude des 20 premières années de celles-ci. Lors de la création de l’Unesco quelques Américains ont énormément travaillé pour que cette Institution spécialisée des Nations- Unis existe. Leur rôle et leur apport sont ici soigneusement mis en évidence. Or, les premières déceptions arrivent rapidement car, à tort, du côté de Washington, on espérait voir l’Organisation participer efficacement à la lutte contre le communisme. Néanmoins, à la fin des années 1950, l’Unesco connaît un regain de faveur auprès du gouvernement américain. Et si l’hégémonie financière américaine à l’Unesco n’a jamais fait de doute, sa domination politique est mise en cause dès les premières années. Les États-Unis vont quitter l’Unesco en 1984, quand la première génération d’Américains, fondateurs de l’Unesco et fidèles malgré les déceptions a, depuis longtemps, quitté la scène politique.     Description: Si l’histoire traditionnelle de l’hérésie au Moyen Âge s’est longtemps confondue avec celle des exclus de la société, l’approche récente se focalise davantage sur les diverses autorités qui, au coeur du pouvoir, élaborèrent la norme religieuse : l’hérésie n’existe que parce que l’orthodoxie en a d’abord décidé. Il reste que, loin de se présenter comme une essence immuable, elle s’impose tout au long du Moyen Âge comme un concept et une qualification d’une très grande plasticité. L’extension progressive du domaine de l’hérésie à de nombreuses formes de dissidence finit par lui assurer le statut d’un crime englobant. Cette enquête collective repose sur la conviction que c’est encore en se situant aux marges de l’hérésie, au contact d’activités répréhensibles voisines, telles que l’usure, la sorcellerie ou encore la rébellion politique, que l’on peut le mieux saisir les principes et les mécanismes de la fabrique de l’hérésie.

Quelles sont les raisons qui expliquent que cette bataille – une parmi tant d’autres qui ont émaillé les conflits du xxe siècle – a d’emblée revêtu une dimension historique pour les contemporains ? Pourquoi précisément cette opération militaire est-elle désormais régulièrement commémorée par autant de chefs d’État sous le regard des télévisions du monde entier ? Comment expliquer le statut si particulier acquis par cet événement au fil des décennies, jusqu’au projet d’inscription des plages du Débarquement au patrimoine de l’Unesco ? En revenant à la dramatisation des enjeux d’une bataille annoncée près de quatre années à l’avance, mais aussi aux ressorts politiques, idéologiques, économiques et culturels qui ont contribué à transcender l’événement en épopée, cet ouvrage s’interroge sur la quête d’identité de chacun des acteurs nationaux à travers l’évolution de leur mémoire. Ainsi peut-on mieux comprendre la surprenante transformation de l’épisode guerrier en symbole universel de paix et de liberté.

The present study links the reproach of sexual misconduct as a political argument in medieval discourse to medieval ideas about royalty and government, opening new perspectives of a cultural history of politics in the Later Middle Ages.
    Description: Die politische Rolle des Favoriten und die Art seiner Beziehung zum König sind in der Forschung oft nicht klar gesehen worden, da in den Diskursen des frühen und späten Mittelalters die besondere Nähe zum Herrscher regelmäßig in der Sprache der Liebe und in Gesten der körperlichen Nähe und Intimität zum Ausdruck kam. So entstand der Eindruck, dass der König aus homosexueller Neigung seinem Günstling übermäßigen Einfluss gewährte – auf Kosten der Barone, die ebenfalls einen Anteil an der Macht beanspruchten. In dieser Studie wird die Figur des Favoriten neu betrachtet und in ihrer Bedeutung über den Einzelfall hinaus verständlich gemacht. Sie setzt den Vorwurf sexuellen Fehlverhaltens als politisches Argument in Bezug zur Entwicklung der Vorstellung von Königtum und Herrschaft und eröffnet so neue Perspektiven einer Kulturgeschichte des Politischen im Spätmittelalter.

Ainsi, l’impression est née que le roi, par inclination homosexuelle, accordait une influence excessive à son favori – aux dépens des barons, qui revendiquaient, eux aussi, une part du pouvoir. Dans l’esprit d’une »histoire culturelle de la politique«, le présent ouvrage reconsidère la figure du favori, la rend compréhensible et tangible dans sa signification au-delà du cas individuel. Il met en évidence le caractère constructif des modèles modernes de perception du désir sexuel et souligne l’importance de l’inconduite sexuelle comme argument politique dans le discours médiéval.

This was the occasion for the presentation of the results of archive research performed by young researchers on the Jewish presence in numerous cities and smaller towns of the Venetian hinterland in the fifteenth century (Vicenza, Verona, Treviso, Feltre, and the minor centres of the Polesine and Verona and Vicenza territory). The various themes that are developed though attentive and documented analysis include: the autonomous initiative of the civic communities in the relation with the Jewish moneylenders and the attitude of Venice, divided between protection and the anti-Jewish tensions that were widespread among the lagoon nobility; the encounter and dialectic between the Ashkenazi and Italian components in the communities settled within the cities and hamlets of Veneto; the difference of the social and cultural climate between the first and second half of the fifteenth century, marked by incisive Franciscan preaching and attempts at expulsion from the cities; a look 'from the inside' which opens up the role of women in the economic life of the Jewish communities. Over twenty years after the convention on 'The Jews and Venice' promoted by the Fondazione Cini, these contributions illustrate the revival of study and the ever-present need for comparison and exchange on the issue of the Jewish presence in Italy.

    Description: « Zone tribale du Nord-Yémen », « zone tribale de l’Ouest pakistanais », voilà bien des expressions qui reviennent dans l’actualité pour désigner des régions de confins farouchement réfractaires à l’imposition d’un nouvel ordre politique. Dès la fin du XIXe et au début du XXe siècle, les États européens, emportés dans leur mouvement d’expansion outre-mer, vinrent buter, en périphérie, sur ce type d’espace en quelque sorte interstitiel des relations internationales contemporaines. Dans ces zones où les agents traditionnels de la vie diplomatique pénétraient peu, ou mal, une expertise particulière, celle du renseignement et des agences de sécurité, parut s’imposer. Lorsque la France coloniale s’implante en Syrie et au Liban, au lendemain de la Première Guerre mondiale, elle doit précisément faire face à ce type de résistance, où se combinent turbulences tribales, désordres sociaux et effervescence identitaire. La lutte qui s’engage alors entre bandes armées locales d’une part, et Service des Renseignements de l’armée française de l’autre, dépasse, et de loin, le face-à-face purement martial, mais renvoie à un choc des violences, sociale et guerrière d’un côté, étatique et militaire de l’autre, dont il n’est pas sûr que la leçon ne vaille qu’au passé.

    Description: This chapter provides a thorough investigation of the modes by which the sanitary administration coevolved coherently with and inseparably from the Spanish state’s modern transport-communication and economic-industrial infrastructures throughout the nineteenth century. It also investigates examines how quarantine institutions functioned as sanitary gateways or entry checkpoints at borders, physically marking and consolidating while protecting the national territorial space. The paper traces the ideas underpinning the configuration and development of the sanitary network on Spanish national territory, which occurred unevenly – with the most evolved parts depending on certain strategic ports and on links with the railway transport infrastructure that was still under construction. It also suggests that the gradual relaxation of quarantine in liberal Spain was periodically called into question by economic and political policies that defined the relation between the coastal and inland regions of the country.

    Description: Between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, the elites (secular and ecclesiastical) of the many villages, castles, smaller urban centres that make the Italian landscape so unique, started to deeply rethink the past of their “small homeland”. Roman (but also pre-Roman) heritage and medieval tradition are at the centre of interest; bold “inventions” and manipulations alternate with searches for a solid erudite structure. The essays published here concern the Italian regions of Piedmont, Romagna, Emilia, Tuscany, Marche, Umbria, Terra di Bari, Campania. In the essays, a strong sense of identity and a robust self-awareness emerges; ultimately, this is the vitality of a connective tissue of settlements featuring an “original character” relevant in the Italian historical events from the Middle Ages to the present day.

    Description: Ausgehend von einem regionalen denkmalpflegerischen Auftrag, der Freilegung einer verdeckten Bildtapete aus der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts im Herrenhaus Ludwigsburg in Schleswig-Holstein, entdeckt die Autorin einen völlig unerwarteten, sich zunehmend als bedeutsam herausstellenden kulturellen Bezug zwischen dem abgeschiedenen Herrenhaus und der damaligen Weltmetropole der Kunst, Paris. Die freigelegte Tapete erweist sich als eine Umsetzung des Versailler Gemäldes La prise de la smala d’Abd el-Kader von Horace Vernet, das ein Geschehen aktueller Kolonialgeschichte Frankreichs in Algerien zum Thema hat. In akribischer Recherche verfolgt Moya Tönnies die Herkunft und Persönlichkeiten der damaligen Bewohner des Herrenhauses, um der Entscheidung für diesen ungewöhnlichen Wandschmuck auf die Spur zu kommen. Im Zentrum steht die Schlossherrin Joséphine von Ahlefeld, genannt Marix, und ihre enge Verbindung mit den wichtigsten Literaten ihrer Zeit in Paris. Als ein Glücksfall ist es zu betrachten, dass ein Text von Théophile Gautier ans Licht kam, der den Besuch des Schriftstellers auf Gut Ludwigsburg als Station auf einer längeren Reise schildert. Dieser Text ist dem Buch als Anhang beigefügt.
