Description: Cyclonic gyres are places where a large amount of suspended particles are concentrated, among them the phytoplankton, an important piece of the trophic chain. In the southern Gulf of Mexico (GoM) most of the fishing fleet usually goes to well-known sites. Those are sites where the organisms use to concentrate. Some of these sites are located in the area of influence of the cyclonic gyre of the Bay of Campeche. Using satellite data of the geostrophic currents, we analyzed the geographical variation of the position of the Campeche gyre, with respect to the fishing areas, for the months of November to February 2014 to 2017. In the Gulf of Mexico, the sawfish (Scomberomorus maculatus or Spanish mackerel), which due to its capture is located in the thirteenth place at a national level in Mexico, reports the highest capture in the Campeche area. This species, as well as other marine organisms from the south of GoM, indirectly take advantage of the nutrients provided by the Campeche gyre, which moves according to the oceanic and atmospheric conditions of the mesoscale, hence the importance of knowing its location for fisheries, both offshore and artisanal. For this reason, this paper aims to describe the relationship between the Campeche gyre, which provides a large amount of nutrients, and the capture of sawfish.

Description: Beach surface temperature is recorded every morning between 7h30 and 8h00 at each coastal station. On figure 2, 3, 4 and 5 it has been plotted daily variation and mean variation computed on 7, 15 and 30 days basis of sea surface temperature. However it seems that variations of dynamic height anomaly are reflecting more accurately the stages of the coastal upwelling than the sea surface temperature.

Description: The sardinella fleet landed the same quantity of sardines in 1983 (11200 tons) as in 1982. Sardinella aurita catches would be more important if the "Syndicat des Armateurs" did not impose quotas - in July 300 boxes and in August 100 boxes by fleet by trip. The extension of the effort to herring stock increased the catches of this species and an over estimation of 44% of the effort have been observed in 1983.

Description: Spawning of bonga (Ethmalosa fimbriata Bowdich) takes place in polyhalin waters (Sppt. 〉 5ppt.). Migrations of young fish were studied by the mean of length data observed in different points of the lagoon from the artisanal fishery. Bonga remain 4 months in the hatchery (6 cm), before they expand in the whole lagoon until the age of 9/10 months. After this expansion phase, the fishes come back to the spawning fields (spawning length: 14/15 cm). Postspawning fishes leave the lagoon. Between birth and spawning, bonga are not affected by salinity changes, but reproduction occurs only in waters where salinity is higher than 5ppt.

Description: Phytoplankton density, taxonomic composition and distribution in the thermocline layer were investigated to compare with those in the surface layer of 31 stations in the western Philippines during 17 April – 9 May 1998. The samples were collected from surface, thermocline depth (the beginning of thermocline), and chlorophyll maximum depth. In this study, thermocline depth and chlorophyll maximum depth were included in the thermocline layer. Three hundred and thirty-eight taxa, composed of 2 species of blue green alga, 144 species of diatoms and 168 species of dinoflagellates were identified. The occurrence of the species in each sampling depth were recorded. Phytoplankton densities at chlorophyll maximum depth were mostly highest among the sampling depths observed. The most abundance was 20,683 cells/l found at thermocline depth of station 24 due to the blooms of many diatom species. Oscillatoria (Trichodesmium) erythraea and Chaetoceros lorenzianus were dominant from surface through chlorophyll maximum depth. Seven species of diatoms presented as the dominant species only in the thermocline layer. The toxic dinoflagellates were found in low cell densities. Diversity and evenness indices of phytoplankton at chlorophyll maximum depth were high.

Description: There is a growing realization in Southeast Asian of the need for increased participation by resource users in fisheries management and greater localized control over access to the resource. Community-based resource management has re-emerged as a way to involve resource users and to utilize indigenous institutional arrangements and knowledge in coastal fisheries management. In virtually all users, however, the future of community-based resource management seems to lie in a form of co-management, a sharing of responsibility and authority for resource management users of community. The Philippines is a world leader in community-based coastal resource management (CBCRM) between 1984-1994, 43 CBCRM programs and projects with over 105 project units or sites were implemented throughout the 12 regions of the Philippines. This paper will present the results of a review and evaluation of CBCRM programs and projects in the Philippines. Major interventions, Institutions and processes of CBCRM are discussed and general lessons learned are identified.

Description: Oceanic cephalopod exploration was conducted by M.V. SEAFDEC in Vietnamese waters during 21 April- 5 June 1999, as part of SEAFDEC’s collaborative research survey on the fisheries resources of the South China Sea Area IV (Vietnamese waters) with focus on tuna, oceanic squid and other highly migratory species. Squid fishing activities were conducted in 10 stations, ranging in the depth from 600-4000 m, using four automatic jigging machines at night. The purpleback flying squid, Sthenoteuthis oualaniensis (Lesson, 1830) was the only species caught throughout the fishing area. Diagnosis and distribution of the species in the study area are reported.

Description: Phytoplankton samples were collected from 81 stations in the Gulf of Thailand and the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia during pre-northeast monsoon season (4 Sept. - 4 Oct. 1995) and the post-northeast monsoon season (23 Apr. - 23 May 1996). Two hundred and sixty taxa, composed of 2 species of blue green alga, 133 species of diatoms and 107 species of dinoflagellates, were identified. One species of blue green algae and 17 species of diatoms dominated the population in the study area. The dominant species most frequently found were Oscillatoria erythraea, Thalassionema frauenfeldii, Chaetoceros lorenzianus and C. compressus. The greatest phytoplankton bloom occurred by the highest cell density of Skeletonema costatum in the post-monsoon season near the end of Peninsular Malaysia. The toxic dinoflagellates were found with low cell densities. Species diversity indices (richness indices, diversity indices and evenness indices) were high in the coastal areas in the post-monsoon season.

Description: If managed sensibly, inland water bodies can go a long way to provide India with a sustainable future and food security for its population. Fish production in India registered a remarkable 16-fold increase during the last six decades to reach 12.59 mn tonnes (MT) in 2017-18, propelling the country to the position of the second-largest fish-producing nation in the world. During this period, the share of inland fish production has increased from 30 per cent to 70 per cent, and the present inland fish production has reached 8.9 MT. More than 14 mn fishers and fish farmers depend on fishing and fish farming for their livelihoods; many times more than that number eke out their living through support and ancillary activities like fish processing, trade and making of fishing craft and gear.

Description: More than the COVID-19 pandemic itself, the lockdowns to prevent its spread have harder hit Nigeria’s unorganized small-scale fishers. The COVID-19 pandemic has fundamentally struck all facets of life in affected countries and the small-scale fisheries (SSF) of Nigeria are no exception. The pandemic has hit the country’s small fishers both directly and indirectly. Small operators are the bulk of Nigeria’s fisheries sector. They account for 70 per cent of the domestic fish production, and sustain the livelihoods of millions of people in one way or another; the dependence on local fish species for economic and food security is evidently large. SSF provides an accessible, cheap and rich source of protein and essential micronutrients to the rural population. Their impact on social, economic and cultural spheres is immense.

Description: The 1960 UN Conference on the Law of the Sea failed to reach agreement on the breadth of the territorial sea and fishing limits, with India, Chile and Ecuador playing decisive roles. The road to the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) was littered with failed treaty-making conferences. In 1930, a League of Nations conference broke up without a decision over territorial waters. In 1958, a UN conference failed to agree on the breadth of the territorial sea and associated fishing limits. In 1960, a follow-up UN conference to decide these two outstanding questions collapsed.

Description: Renewed calls for marine conservation must not bulldoze the democratic route that has allowed small island nations to improve fisheries and incomes without damaging the marine ecology. I wanted to share some concerns regarding the danger that threatens to disrupt the management of the Pacific Islands’ signature fisheries and main independent source of income. There have been renewed calls for 30 per cent marine protected areas (MPAs) that sound suspiciously over-simplistic. Community-conserved areas come at many scales and the Pacific Islands’ chances of ensuring a multinational indigenous conserved area are threatened.

Description: An award-winning film, made on a tight budget, captures in powerful images the complexities of small-scale fishers and fish processors in West Africa. I’m in search of happiness. That’s how a young Guinean surprises us in the smoky atmosphere of a sardinella smoking oven in Casamance, Senegal, in a sequence from the film Poisson d’or, poisson africain. Thomas Grand and his friend Moussa Diop show us the price to pay for trying to make a living on this bustling beach. They give us a scalpel-sharp analysis of the complex realities of a temporary community that brings together, for six months of the year, men, women and children from all over West Africa, around the exploitation of fish.

Description: There is no reason to wait for consensus on what is justice before we do something about injustice in small-scale fisheries. With the Blue Economy/Blue Growth now spreading around the world, I believe the issue of social justice for small-scale fisheries is an important and increasingly urgent issue, also for social research. We now have the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication (SSF Guidelines), a landmark achievement when member-states of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) endorsed them in June 2014. I believe that if states do nothing to implement the guidelines, the Blue Economy will come at a loss to small-scale fisheries. Then the many injustices they have faced for so long will only exacerbate.

Description: According to the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2020 (SOFI 2020) released in July amidst the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of people affected by hunger is steadily rising globally. People with higher risk of food insecurity include those with the lowest levels of income and education, the unemployed, those with health problem, those living in rural areas, and those separated or divorced. The report, which carries recent and authoritative estimates of hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition around the world, also revealed disturbing gender specific aspects of hunger: moderate to severe food insecurity is more prevalent among women than men; there is a growing gender gap in accessing food; and the most disadvantaged and vulnerable are often adolescents, women and children living in the poorest households in rural areas but also urban areas. When viewed in the context of a pandemic induced global economic crisis, these findings have serious implications for the lives of women in the small-scale fisheries.

Description: The harsh economic impact of the ongoing pandemic-related lockdown has spurred fisherwomen in Costa Rica to return to their traditional sources of livelihood. Although there have been very few COVID-19 cases in the area, the suspension of tourism with the COVID -19 pandemic has had an enormous impact on the southern Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. Until recently, tourism was the mainstay of the local economy in the coastal communities of Puerto Viejo, Cahuita, Manzanillo and Cocles. However, the crisis has brought about a re-activation of traditional ancestral livelihoods where fishermen and women take to the sea in boats and kayaks bringing food to their families and communities.

Description: The impact of the COVID-19 lockdown on a small-scale fishing in Lorient is vividly captured in the pages of a diary maintained by a gillnetter skipper’s spouse. In March 2020, Emmanuelle Yheul-Bertin, wife of a gillnet skipper who runs a 13-metre gillnetter vessel with four men on board, began recording the experiences of skipper and crew during the COVID-19 lockdown. Her diary covers the period from mid-March to early May. The first entry signals a gathering cloud of anxieties. “The media is reporting lockdown restrictions to prevent the spread of COVID,” writes Emmanuelle, “but the artisanal fishery in Lorient is yet to recover from the impact of the winter’s numerous storms.”

Description: Amélie Dennebouy has challenged gender stereotypes to become a successful mussel entrepreneur in Pénestin, France. “ We don’t employ women!” Just how many times Amélie Dennebouy, a mussel farm worker, heard that phrase since she began working in the sector at age 17, it would be impossible to say. “Ten years ago, I realised that it would be difficult to find employment in the production segment because I am a woman,” says Amélie. Stories flood her mind: managers laughing at her when she handed in an application for work as a production worker, pushing her to the sales department instead; the crude questioning of some: “Have you passed under the desk?”

Description: Between August and October 2020, ASFA ran a survey to assess the impact of COVID-19 on aquatic science libraries around the world. With restrictions in many places library staff and patrons were unable to access buildings, we were interested to find out what impact this was having on staff and learn whether libraries were helping their communities respond to the virus. This article presents a summary of the survey results, further analysis will be undertaken by the ASFA Impact and Strategies Working Group, looking particularly at ways in which libraries can mitigate the impact of the pandemic.

Description: The International Collective in Support of Fishworkers (ICSF) has released the latest edition of Yemaya, its newsletter on gender and fisheries.Yemaya No. 62, dated December 2020, features articles from Bangladesh, Myanmar, Ghana, Mexco and the conversation between Meryl Williams, Danika Klieber and Kate Bevitt. The article from Bangladesh by Md. Mujibul Haque Munir reveals that women in Bangladesh’s coastal fishing continue to remain largely unrecognized and that urgent steps are needed to rectify this situation. The article from Myanmar by Angela Lentisco looks at the challenge of FAO’s FishAdapt project in strengthening the adaptive capacity and resilience of fisheries -and aquaculture dependent livelihoods and limited opportunity to work as wage labour in the commercial fishing business. The article from Ghana by Naana Nkansah Agyekum looks at the gradual transformation of the ahotor oven which represents an improvement on the widely used chorkor smoke. The ahotor oven is energy efficient and helps women fish processors reduce the quantity of firewood in smoking fish. The conversation between Kate Bevitt, Danika Kleiber and Meryl Williams focuses on the collaborative study, Illuminating Hidden Harvests. The conversation highlights the under recognition and under reporting of women’s work.

Description: Women in the small scale fishing sector in Mexico are key drivers ensuring food security and community wellbeing during the COVID-19 pandemic. The impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic have surpassed all imaginable scenarios. The global crisis moves fast and changes quickly, hence forcing people to adapt and navigate through uncertainty as never before. Every generation faces impacts that shake their minds and force them to leave their comfort zone. This is an impact for a lifetime, for current and new generations. Other shocks have posed risks to fisheries before; some of them being global (climate change), regional (overfishing) or even local (illegal fishing, poverty, poor fishing management tools, lack of enforcement), to name only a few. However, the impact of the current pandemic greatly eclipses these in terms of scale and outcome.
