Description: Music has undergone a tremendous mediatization the last 100 years. Electrification and, later on, the digitization of music media have exposed music to an increased dissemination, both spatially – it can be heard almost everywhere – and temporally – one can listen to music almost anytime. This chapter aims to highlight and detail some fundamental changes and important transformations and displacements in everyday listening to recorded music as they first emerged. The macro level changes and transformations described by the concepts of mediatization and musicalization nevertheless depend on what happens at meso and micro levels. Recorded music in Sweden during the early decades of the century met with a “utilitarian” approach among audiences. In many ways, the change in attitude towards the gramophone and recorded music that can be traced in the reviews corresponds to transformations within the conceptual space.

Description: Language has a salient role of indicating group membership and is considered a symbol of different social identities. Within the Arabic language, variation across countries and regions create multiple identities, and the classification of Arabic into Standard Arabic (SA) and dialects has long created controversial positions about issues of belonging and intelligibility. This chapter explores representations of linguistic identities in the popular Arabic-medium television series Khawaja Abdulqader. The chapter uses discourse analysis (DA) to explore how the main character of the drama utilizes linguistic resources to reveal multiple identities of a non-Arab who speaks Arabic as a foreign language. Five extracts from the series are analysed with a focus on phonological and morphological features of three Arabic variations: Standard Arabic, Sudanese Dialect and Egyptian dialect. The chapter sheds light on the differences and similarities between the dialects as well as comparing these dialects with Gulf varieties such as the Emirati dialect. Based on the findings, the chapter argues that linguistic features and variation seen in the series unify rather than distance Arabic-speakers’ identities and cultural belongingness.

Description: The free movement of services, one of the four fundamental freedoms of the European Union's (EU) internal market, allows companies to post their employees to other EU Member States. In Slovenia, the concept of cross-border posting became relevant after the country joined the EU in 2004. The number of posted workers in Slovenia has been growing steadily since then and is among the highest in the EU. An increase in posting has also been observed in the EU as well. One of the main reasons for the rapid increase in the number of workers posted to wealthier EU countries is the accession of ten new Member States in 2004, with significant differences in living standards between the `new´ and `old´ Member States. Focusing on Slovenia, an important reason for Slovenia’s high numbers of posted workers is also its proximity to the countries of the former Yugoslavia and the strong migrant flows from these countries to the EU via Slovenian companies. As a result, the number of workers posted from Slovenia to other EU Member States has been one of the highest in the EU over the past decade.

    Taylor & Francis | Post-Soviet Borders | Routledge
    Publication Date: 2023-09-12
Description: After the dissolution of the USSR, the new post-Soviet borders became a valuable research laboratory both for social scientists from the region and international scholars. Persisting Soviet legacies, on the one hand, and the continuing re-bordering processes in the post-Soviet space, on the other, make post-Soviet borders an object of enduring scholarly interest and constitute post-Soviet border studies as a specific research field. This chapter outlines the contours of this multidisciplinary field and seeks to map its main research institutions, projects, and publications in multiple political, geographic, and academic contexts. It identifies regional ‘schools’ of border studies in the post-Soviet space as well as their origins. The chapter argues that the institutionalisation of border studies in the post-Soviet context has been closely connected, first, to the new geopolitical imaginaries of the post-Cold War era and, second, to some important paradigmatic shifts in social sciences that arrived in post-Soviet academia in the 1990s.

Description: Starting with a true story that inspired this research, the introduction raises the main research questions that are examined and addressed in the rest of the book: how have different forms of traditions affected the physical, psychological, and social constructions of home for people living in vernacular settlements in rural China? The introduction frames the study within the scholarly understandings of the concepts of home, place, and tradition. It identifies the gap in the existing scholarship of home when contextualizing it in the place of rural China and considering attributes of Chinese cultural traditions. Finally, it introduces Yanxia village as the case study and summarizes the research process and method. In particular, it outlines the validity of adopting the method of photovoice, which includes over 600 photographs taken by the residents along with the collection of the life stories behind these photographs.

Description: This chapter focuses on the multifaceted relationship between people and the land on which their families lived for generations. Summarizing this relationship as the place-bound relationship, this chapter examines the ways this place-bound relationship affected the meaning of home for people living in Yanxia. Vernacular place in rural China includes the system of settings where daily activities often take place outside the house. It also consists of highly socialized spaces built on social relations established through consanguineous coordinates, which in turn stabilize and sustain rural societies while strengthening attachment to place. Using this theoretical framework and drawing upon the ethnographic fieldwork, this chapter argues that the place-bound relationship in Yanxia supported the rural lifestyle, sustained social relationships and cultural performance, facilitated the construction of individual and collective identities, and imparted to local residents a sense of ownership of their home. In particular, the sense of ownership further attached the residents to the land, which, in turn, strengthened the place-bound relationship and sustained the meaning of home.
