    Description: Consideration is given to the development of the Experimental Assembly of Structures in EVA/Assembly Concept for Construction of Erectable Space Structures (EASE/ACCESS) space construction demonstration, which was performed during Space Shuttle mission 61-B. The mission equipment is described and illustrated and the EASE/ACCESS mission management structure is outlined. Simulations of the assembly and disassembly in the NASA neutral buoyancy simulators were used to test the mission plans. In addition, EVA training and crew performance for the mission are discussed.

    Description: Following a brief overview of past accomplishments in space science, a status report is given concerning progress toward recovering from the Challenger accident and a number of trends are described which are likely to have a major influence on the future of the NASA Space Science program. Key changes in process include a trend toward a program centered on the use of large, long-lived facilities, the emergence of strong space capabilities outside the U.S., and steps being taken toward the diversification of NASA's launch capability. A number of recent planning activities are also discussed. Major considerations which will specifically need to be taken into account in NASA's prgram planning include the need for provision of a spectrum of flight activities and the need to recognize likely resource limitations and to do more realistic program planning.

    Description: The Space Shuttle Orbiter-deployed Tethered Satellite System (TSS) could allow an Orbiter at a 200 km orbital altitude to reach down to atmospheric altitudes of 90 km, in order to study weather phenomena, pollutant transport, 'nuclear winter' smoke transport, atmospheric physics and dynamics, sun-earth interactions, ecosystem interactions, and radio communications. The TSS satellite, a 1.5-m diameter sphere, would carry scientific instrumentation which could initially be dedicated to the investigation of energy and momentum transfer between a tethered system and the upper atmosphere.

    Description: Telescience refers to the development of systems where participants involved in research in space can access their fellow scientists and the appropriate NASA services before flight, during flight, and after flight, preferably from their home institutions and through the same equipment. Telescience requires integration of available technologies to develop computer environments that maintain interoperability across different disciplines and different portions of the lifetimes of space experiments, called teledesign, teleoperations, and teleanalysis. Participants in the NASA Telescience Testbed Program are using a rigid prototyping approach to evaluate the necessary technologies and select the options and tradeoffs that best suit their accustomed modalities. The concept of transaction management is described, where the emphasis is placed on the effects of commands, whether event-generated onboard the spacecraft or sent up from the ground. Interoperability, security, and privacy issues are also discussed, and the Telescience Testbed Pilot Program is described.
