Notes: A method is described for the analysis of contaminated building dust samples and surface swab samples for octachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (OCDD) and heptachlorodibenzo-p-dioxins (HpCDDs). The samples were analyzed by fused silica capillary GC combined with electron capture detection. Analysis was preceded by a short HPLC cleanup step designed to remove polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and other compounds that might interfere. The method was found to work successfully on surface swab and dust samples known to contain PCBs, OCDD, and HpCDDs. The overall recovery of the analysis procedure for OCDD was found to be approximately 80%. The detection limit for the method was sample dependent, but for one typical set of surface swab samples was 0.2 μg/m2 of OCDD.

Notes: The activity of fused silica capillary tubing has been shown to vary considerably, which severely influences the reproducibility of column deactivation and inertness. Methods for producing a reproducible, high activity surface with maximum hydroxylation by various hydrothermal treatments were evaluated. Columns pretreated with 20% nitric acid at 200°C for 10 hours, deactivated with D4, coated with OV-73, and crosslinked with azo-tert-butane were found to possess excellent inertness for sensitive analytes such as alcohols, amines, and alkaloid drugs.

Notes: In this work, an investigation of new organosilicon hydride reagents with phenyl functional groups for deactivation and surface modification of fused silica capillary columns is described. Different reagents were tested for their ability to deactivate the fused silica surface, and actual critical surface tension measurements were made using the capillary rise method. The deactivation procedure required lower optimum temperatures than conventional methods. Deactivated capillaries and coated capillary columns were prepared and tested for reproducibility, efficiency, and surface inertness towards basic and acidic compounds at the low nanogram level.

Notes: The chemical composition of a commercially available creosote was compared to a direct coal liquefaction product, i.e., solvent refined coal-II fuel oil blend (SRC-II FOB) using high resolution gas chromatography (HRGC). In addition, hydrogenated products of these materials were studied. Samples were fractionated by chemical class on neutral alumina. Those fractions previously shown to be the most mutagenic and tumorigenic in laboratory bioassays of coal-derived materials were analyzed and compared by HRGC and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Individual components were tentatively identified and quantitated. Although similar chemical components were present in the creosote and SRC-II FOB fractions studied, the creosotes had higher concentrations of heavy molecular weight materials and a lower ratio of alkylated to parent polycyclic aromatic compounds than the coal liquefaction products. The creosote samples also had a significantly higher concentration of components which eluted in the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) chemical class fraction. Amino-substituted PAH were present in both nonhydrogenated coal liquid and creosote materials. The creosote and SRC-II FOB crudes and nitrogen-containing polycyclic aromatic compound (NPAC) chemical class fractions expressed similar microbial mutagenicity. Based on chemical analysis data, the predicted tumorigenic potency of the creosote in laboratory bioassay systems would be equivalent to or greater than the SRC-II FOB.

Notes: About three years ago, fused silica capillary columns were introduced in the Quality Control Laboratory of the Shell refinery/chemical complex at Pernis. In general, long, thick-film, wide-bore capillary columns are used together with low split ratios and hydrogen as carrier gas. These conditions enable the analysis of relatively large sample amounts, resulting in low detection limits for the minor components without overloading by the major components, while still maintaining a satisfactory resolution. A number of applications are shown, such as the analysis of complex mixtures, the determination of trace impurities and the analysis of residual volatiles in polymers.

Notes: Polyethylene glycols can be immobilized in glass capillary columns by a new procedure involving covering the glass walls with a layer of graphitized carbon black and by flowing a mixture of the stationary phase and dicumyl peroxide. After curing and conditioning the column is ready for use. Excellent performance is reported for Carbowax 20 M and high molecular weight glycols. For other glycols the immobilized layer is less stable and can be washed out.

Notes: Cooled needle sampling using syringes was applied to splitless injection and to simulated distillation analyses. Slight changes of the construction of the previous device are also described. The changes concern the temperature profile within the injector and especially the vaporization insert. Even with the low carrier gas flow through the injector during splitless injection, discrimination by component volatility can be avoided. Precision and accuracy of simulated distillation data obtained with split sampling also can be improved by the cooled needle technique.

Notes: This article describes and critically evaluates a complete method for the quantitation of PCB in sediment samples. The extraction and clean-up procedure is described. Packed column and capillary column results are compared. Capillary column quantitation yields lower values for total PCB loading. Preferences for capillary column quantitation are discussed and explained. Capillary quantitation is based on the combination of an external Aroclor standard and an internal decachlorobiphenyl standard for normalizing data. In light of the recent report of synthesis of all 209 PCB congeners a suggestion is made to use these as absolute standards to establish a bank of primary standard Aroclors.

Notes: The procedure for calculating linear temperature programmed indices as described in part 1 has been evaluated using five different nonpolar columns, with OV-1 as the stationary phase. For fourty-three different solutes covering five different classes of components, including n-alkanes and alkyl-aromatic compounds, both isothermal and temperature programmed indices were determined. The isothermal information was used to calculate temperature programmed indices. For several linear programmed conditions accuracies better than 0.51T-units were usually obtained. The results are compared with published procedures. It is demonstrated that isothermal retention information obtained on one column can be transferred to another column with the same stationary phase but different column dimensions and/or phase ratio. The temperature programmed indices calculated in this way also have an accuracy better than 0.51T-u.The temperature accuracy and precision of the GC-instrumentation used was of the order of 0.1°C. All calculations can be run with a Basic-programmed microcomputer.

Notes: The effect of deactivating a fused silica surface by silylation with 1,1,3,3-tetraphenyl-1,3-dimethylilazane (TPDMDS), triphenylsilylamine (TPSA), and octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) and by polydimethylsiloxane degradation (PSD) is studied. Rehydrated, dried, and deactivated Cab-O-Sil M5 samples are used as model materials for 29Si CP-MAS NMR analysis. At about 350 °C, TPDMDS yelds mainly diphenylmethylsiloxysilane, dimethyldisiloxysilane, and triphenylsiloxysilane groups. TPSA yields phenyltrisiloxysilane, diphenyldisiloxysilane, and triphenylsiloxysilane groups. At 400°C, the products formed initially are eventually replaced by methyltrisiloxysilane or phenyltrisiloxysilane groups, while a substantial number of silanol groups still remains. The possible consequences for wettability are discussed.D4 reacts with Cab-O-Sil even at 200°C, but a large number of silanol groups remains. This number decreases gradually at higher temperatures and becomes negligible above 400°C. The formation of methyltrisiloxysilane groups, which starts at 425°C, is predominant at 490°C.

Notes: A comparison is made between dichlorosilanes and cyclic siloxanes as starting materials in the synthesis of stationary phases for capillary gas chromatography (CGC) and supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC). Siloxanes containing one or more of the side groups methyl, vinyl, phenyl, and cyanoethyl in various ratios were synthesized and compared. These phases were characterized by chromatographic (gel permeation, GPC), spectroscopic (IR, 1H NMR, 29Si NMR), and thermal (DSC) methods. Coated fused silica columns were evaluated with respect to polarity, crosslinkability with several free-radical initiators, and thermal stability. A new liquid phase, 7% cyanoethyl, 7% phenyl, 1% vinyl methyl polysiloxane is shown to be more polar than OV-1701, more temperature stable, easily crosslinked and suitable for use in supercritical fluid chromatography.

Notes: A dual oven gas chromatograph incorporating a micro, mechanical switching valve has been interfaced to an FTIR spectrometer. With this system, each oven can be operated with independent temperature control. Complete choice of the columns' type and capacity gives flexibility in the separation prior to spectroscopic evaluation. An application which demonstrates some of the advantages of column switching in GC/FTIR is presented. Minor sample components have been successfully analyzed by heart-cutting the appropriate section of the separation from a high to a low capacity column. In this way, the dynamic range of the technique is effectively increased while an efficient chromatographic inlet to the FTIR is maintained.

Notes: The accuracy and reproducibility of steroid and steroid conjugate determinations using capillary GC are evaluated. It is possible to analyze many unconjugated steroids, steroid sulfates, and some steroid glucuronides simultaneously, simply by using group fractionation based on successive hydrolysis and solvent extraction steps. However, a reliable determination of corticosteroid glucuronides can only be obtained after previous isolation of the glucuronides as a group, with ion exchange chromatography. In complex chromatograms, the combined use of nitrogen specific detection and flame ionization detection facilitates peak identification.

Notes: In the gas chromatographic analysis of complex biological samples, the most time-consuming and error-prone steps are the pretreatment required for isolation and purification of the compounds of interest and, for most analytes, the derivatization to chemically and thermally stable compounds with high volatility. These wet-chemical steps are usually carried out manually, and for routine analysis of large numbers of samples they are often rate-limiting. A dedicated automated derivatizer has been constructed, the employment of which significantly reduces the time required for manual labor and increases the reproducibility of derivatization and hence the accuracy of analysis.

Notes: The introduction of selected fractions from a liquid chromatograph into a gas chromatograph has been described; however, analyses were performed by off-line experiments requiring collection and reinjection of the separate fractions or by on-line procedures where disadvantageously, only a fraction of the separated peak or a well resolved component in a mixture could be introduced into a gas chromatograph. This disadvantage is overcome by the apparatus and method described in this paper, which utilizes a multidimensional chromatography system employing a high efficiency, packed capillary LC column coupled on-line to a capillary gas chromatograph. The liquid chromatograph (so designed) can act as a highly efficient clean-up or chemical class fractionation step prior to introduction into the gas chromatograph, significantly reducing sample preparation times in many applications. Thus minor components in a complex matrix can be determined without prior sample clean-up, an example of which is the determination of polychlorinated biphenyls in a complex hydrocarbon matrix.

Notes: Novel monomeric and polymeric liquid crystalline compounds were synthesized as stationary phases for gas chromatography (GC) and supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC). Monomeric liquid crystalline compounds were used in packed column gas chromatography for the separation of isomeric aromatic compounds and insect sex pheromones. Liquid crystalline polymers possess long nematic ranges and a uniform coating was easily achieved in glass and fused silica capillaries, which could stand temperatures up to 250°C in GC and pressures of 200 MPa at 160°C in SFC. The columns provide excellent selectivity and resolution for fused ring aromatic compounds such as the isomers anthracene and phenanthrene or triphenylene and chrysene.

Notes: This paper briefly surveys three important considerations related to the tube diameter and film thickness. These are the interrelationship of these two parameters through the phase ratio, the different meanings of the term “efficiency”, and the influence of film thickness and tube diameter on sample capacity. Comparative examples are given for columns having different diameters and film thicknesses.

Notes: Mesomorphic biphenylcarboxylate esters were coupled via flexible aliphatic hydrocarbon spacers to a polysiloxane backbone. The influence of spacer length, percent mesomorphic substitution, and crosslinking of the stationary phase on liquid-crystalline transition temperatures and on chromatographic performance was investigated. Unique selectivity and good efficiency over a wide temperature range for gum and cross-linked liquid-crystalline phases were demonstrated by the separation of various isomeric polycyclic aromatic compounds.

Notes: Crosslinking experiments for immobilization of the well-known chiral stationary phases XE 60-L-valine-(S)- and XE 60-L-valine-(R)-α-phenylethylamide within capillary columns have been successfully carried out. Crosslinking was also obtained with mixtures of the chiral compound acrylyl-L-valine-(S)-α-phenylethylamide and the polyethylene glycol Carbowax 20M. Immobilization of 75% to 90% was achieved by crosslinking the polymeric chiral phases, but sometimes up to 100% of these phases remained within the columns after the usual subsequent solvent treatment. The crosslinking of Carbowax 20M with acrylyl-L-valine-(S)-α-phenylethylamide led to a chiral polymer of a polarity different from that of the common siloxane type chiral phases.

Notes: The resolution of the diastereoisomers of norpristane, pristane, and phytane was studied as a function of the column internal diameter and/or the residence time of the compounds in the column. Increasing the residence time in the column by operating the column at a lower temperature program rate enhances the resolution more than reducing the internal diameter of the column. Practical experience with ultra narrow bore columns is also presented.

Notes: The use of glass and fused silica open tubular columns for selective separation of structural, configurational, and optical isomers (enantiomers) of underivatized aliphatic alcohols and ketones by complexation gas chromatography on optically active metal chelates is described. The method represents a powerful analytical tool for the precise determination of diastereomeric (d.e.) and enantiomeric (e.e.) excesses in asymmetric syntheses and in natural product characterization. The direct screening of the enantiomeric composition and absolute configuration of terpinene-4-ol, the aggregation phermone of Polygraphus poligraphus (L), is described.

Notes: A gas chromatographic system consisting of one multiport valve, two (hot-wire and flame-ionization) detectors and two analytical columns (one thick-film capillary and one packed adsorption column) is used for the analysis of gas samples containing a number of inorganic compounds (hydrogen, argon, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide) and organic compounds. Examples include samples containing hydrocarbons up to n-nonane and benzene and toluene. The system also permits the analysis of more complicated samples containing, for example, alcohols, in addition to hydrocarbons.

Notes: A modification of a packed GC injector to a capillary injector is presented using a simple device which is connected to the GC column by an adsorption-free connector. It permits injections of large sample volumes up to 500 μl hexane solutions on normal 0.3 mm i.d. capillary columns. No special requirements for the stationary phase are necessary. Involatile residues remain inside the device which can be exchanged easily. High performance of separation and quantification is achieved.

Notes: The capability of the helium ionization detector (HID) to operate in connection with capillary columns for trace gas analyses has been evaluated. Two different capillary columns were considered: a PLOT fused silica column with molecular sleve and a thick film WCOT glass column with PS-255. The determination of trace impurities in gases can be achieved with evident advantages over classical adsorption columns, even using a split injection system. Direct on-column injections also have been investigated with promising results.

Notes: In this paper we report a way to evaluate the removal of volatile halogenated hydrocarbons formed after break-point chlorination in the Arno river raw water at the Mantignano Utility, Florence, Italy, following dechlorination by hydrogen peroxide. The removal evaluation is performed by GC-ECD on fused silica capillary columns with split-splitless injection on n-pentane extracts and by other analytical techniques such as UV254 absorption, TOC and TOX. Both laboratory and pilot plant data on Arno river raw water are reported and discussed.

Notes: It is of fundamental importance to know the true composition of the essential oil produced by the secretory structures of a plant, both from a biogenetic and a chemotaxonomic point of view. This paper considers a method which combines direct sampling with on-column CGC and studies the oils directly from the secretory structures: some examples are given (Humulus lupulus L., Tagetes erecta L., and Tagetes patula L.). For each plant, the composition of the distilled oil is compared to that obtained by direct sampling, and a photograph of the secretory structures taken by electroscanning microscopy is given.

Notes: The efficiency of FSOT columns coated with thick films of polyphenylmethylsiloxane was theoretically and experimentally compared to thin apolar and medium polar coatings and to thick apolar coatings. Experimental hū and TZū plots clearly demonstrate the enormous loss in chromatographic efficiency of thick films of medium polar siloxane stationary phases. The low diffusion coefficient in the liquid phaese is responsible for this behavior. The influence of the temperature and the nature of the solute on the efficiency was also studied.

Notes: The Saccharomyces strains uvarum, montuliensis, bayanus, capensis and florentinus were grown in liquid media prepared from a 1% aqueous glucose solution to which 0.05% of ammonium sulfate or urea were added as the only nitrogen supply. The amino acids exuded during incubation were isolated by cation exchange and derivatized as the corresponding N,O-heptafluorobutyryl isopropyl esters. Separation was achieved on a highly deactivated glass capillary column coated with OV-101. A characteristic amino acid profile was obtained for each of the species studied, allowing the construction of a chemotaxonomic tree, on the basis of present or absent acids.

Notes: Sampling techniques for practical quantitative capillary GC have to meet certain principal requirements. Both the absolute and the relative peak areas (e.g. column loads) must be reproducible with high precision and at high accuracy; discrimination of certain constituents according to their volatility should not take place on sampling. On the basis of systematic studies, the three most reliable sampling techniques used for GC analyses with the aim of achieving precise and accurate quantitative data proved to be the following: On-column, injection, splitless PTV injection, and an optimized version of split sampling called “cooled needle split” injection. The on-column technique can be optimized by using precolumns with wider internal diameters and without stationary phase coatings to overcome the problems of large liquid sampling volumes and for automation. The PTV technique should only be used in the splitless mode because discrimination cannot be suppressed completely with the split mode. All three of the techniques can be operated automatically, either to avoid “human interference”, i.e. to improve precision or for unattended operation to save man-power.

Notes: The elution profiles observed with overloaded capillary columns are well described by a four-parameter theoretical model derived from the basic mass balance equations which relies on an expansion of the partition isotherm to the second term and takes the sorption effect into account. The reliability of the model is demonstrated by the fact that the peak leaning coefficient obtained from a least squares fit of the model to the experimental peak is in good agreement with that obtained from the variation of peak height with retention time at peak maximum. The coefficeint of apparent axial dispersion is independent of sample size and can be used to characterize the plate height at zero concentration of an overloaded capillary column.

Notes: Direct conversion of isothermal to temperature programmed indices is not possible. In this work it is shown that linear temperature programmed retention indices can only be calculated from isothermal retention data if the temperature dependence of both the distribution coefficients and the column dead time are taken into account.Procedures are described which allow calculation of retention temperatures and from these, accurate programmed retention indices. Within certain limits the initial oven temperature and programming rate can be chosen freely. The prerequisite for this calculation is the availability of reliable isothermal retention data (retention times, retention factors, relative retention times, or retention indices) at two different temperatures for one column. The use of compiled isothermal retention indices at two different temperatures for the calculation of retention temperatures and thus temperature programmed indices is demonstrated. For the column for which programmed retention indices have to be determined, the isothermal retention times of the n-alkanes and the column dead time as a function of temperature have to be known in addition to the compiled data for a given stationary phase.Once the programmed retention indices have been calculated for a given column the concept allows the calculation of temperature programmed indices for columns with different specifications. The characteristics which can be varied are: column length, column inner diameter, phase-ratio, initial oven temperature, and programming rate.

Notes: A cold on-column injection system for capillary gas chromatography (GC) applications was constructed. It was based upon a conventional split/splitless capillary GC inlet, which in turn was a modification of a conventional packed GC column inlet. The heart of the laboratory constructed cold on-column inlet design was a disposable pyrex micro-sampling pipet, which functioned as a needle guide for sample injection. The sample was injected through a traditional GC septum. Construction of the injection system is described and applications are illustrated by separations of a variety of complex mixtures.

Notes: The construction and evaluation of an interface for two-dimensional gas chromatography is described. The interface consists of commercially available components and is attachable to available gas chromatographs without any major modifications. The interface has been constructed so as to permit “heartcutting” as well as solute band concentration. Trapping is performed in a simple cold trap of fused silica. Flow switching is accomplished by Deans switching. Factors of the over-all chromatographic performance are examined.

Notes: The coating speed upon static coating of glass capillary columans was evaluated in terms of inner diameter and length of the column, viscosity and pressure of solvent vapor, etc. From the equation obtained it can be shown that a smaller diameter of a microbore column restricts solvent vapor transfer to the orifice of the column drastically. To compensate for this restriction, a higher pressure at the meniscus is needed. As an alternative to using a higher coating temperature, application of more volatile solvents such as n-butane and isobutane is proposed. Several glass capillary columns (130 μm i.d.) were coated with SE-54 dissolved inpentane-acetone mixed with n-butane or isobutane and the column performances were evaluated. Selection of these solvents permitted free release static coating of ca. 100 μm columns at lower or even ambient temperatures and they were equally suitable as commonly applied solvents (e.g. pentane) to coat highly efficient columns.

Notes: Organic compounds adsorbed on fly ash from an incinerator for radioactive waste were investigated. Following Soxhlet extraction and concentration, analysis was performed by GC and GC/MS using high temperature silylated glass capillary columns coated with OV-1 and SE-54. Compound identification was based on retention data, relative detector responses, and mass spectra. Among other polycyclic aromatic compounds, series of gradually chlorinated PAHs containing four to seven aromatic rings were detected. For unequivocal identification, appropriate reference compounds were synthesized by chlorination of the corresponding parent PAHs.

Notes: High resolution gas chromatography-mass spectrometry has been used to detect anabolic steroids in urine. With fused silica capillary columns connected directly to mass spectrometer, the anabolic steroids could be detected after extraction, hydrolysis, and derivatization with a sensitivity better then 1 ppb. In vivo excretion and metabolism has been investigated for androstanolone, methandriol, oxymesterone, quindenione, and boldenone.

Notes: Androgen 5α-reductase from the foreskin of 48 boys in prepubertal age was analyzed by evaluation of the apparent Km-and Vmax- values after tissue incubation. Reaction rates were calculated after determination of specific radioactivity of distinct metabolites, by comparison to the radioactivity of the precursor. Reaction products were separated by radio gas chromatography on capillary columns. The chromatography system was based on multicolumn equipment with column switching facilities and a variable splitter at the outlet of the separation column. A radioactivity monitor (gas proportional counter) was used for measurement of radioactivity in the column effluents. An electron capture detector was used for mass detection of steroid acyl derivatives.

Notes: This investigation lays groundwork for the development of an optimization system for sequentially coupled capillary column systems. Three methods for calculating effective capacity factors were obtained from the literature and were tested to determine suitability for optimization use, using four test analytes and two dissimilar columns. This work concentrates on the development of a method for the estimation of optimum column temperatures in sequentially coupled systems.

Notes: Chromatographic separation of crude oil components has been performed on a 50 m Chrompack Sil 5 fused silica capillary column, temperature programmed from 10 to 300°C. Approximately 70 peaks eluting before n-nonane (n-C9) and all normal paraffins to n-C19 were identified by a retention time table. Peak areas were converted to weight % using 1-heptene as internal standard and relative response factors. Components were divided into boiling range groups from n-C6 to n-C19. Paraffinic, naphthenic, and aromatic distributions were obtained for the boiling point fractions up to n-C9.Group average densities and molecular weights were calculated from pure component properties up to n-C9. Knowing the density and molecular weight as functions of boiling range group to n-C9, these functions can be extrapolated to n-C19, based on data and correlations from more than 20 distillations of paraffinic North Sea oils adn condensates. The densities and molecular weights of the C10+ and the C20+ residues were calculated to satisfy a balance of weight, volume, and number of moles for the whole sample.Measurements on the residues were used to cross-evaluate the GC method against distillation. The difference in weight was estimated to be less than ± 0.5% in absolute terms for the C10+ residue. The corresponding figure for C20+ was ± 2%. Relatively, calculated densities are within ± 1%, molecular weights within ± 2% compared to direct measurements. Calculations were performed by a BASIC program in a GC interfaced computer.

Notes: The technique of spontaneous coating of capillary columns employing liquefied butane and ethylene chloride as solvents of the stationary phase is described. These solvents and their mixtures are suitable for apolar and medium-polar stationary phases. The dependence of coating time on coating temperature and on the composition of the mixture of solvents was observed. It was found that the coating efficiency decreases with increasing coating speed.

Notes: A homologous series of 2,4-dichlorobenzyl alkyl ethers (DCBEs) have been synthesized and purified for use as retention index calibrants and internal standards. They are stable, sensitive to ECD and FID and ideal for GC-MS, with base peaks at m/z 159/161. The retention index calibration against the n-alkanes for a linear temperature program (LTP) series is given and recommendations made for the most suitable members of the DCBE series for use as internal standards in organochlorine (OC) residue analysis.

Notes: The aim of the present study is to develop a method for following the changes in the chemical composition of volatile substances released by plants. Dynamic headspace enrichment, followed by on-line thermal desorption and cryotrapping was coupled with capillary gas chromatography. The technique was optimized by adjusting the sampling and desorption parameters and by designing a special condensing device to avoid the transfer of excessive amounts of water into the analytical column. Details are given for the characterization of volatiles compounds released by mosses.

Notes: The methylphenanthrene index (MPI) [1,2] which was recognized as suitable for the assessment of the “thermal” history of sedimentary organic matter, can be determined directly i.e. without preceding LC group separations by application of multi-dimensional GC in capillary columns. A GC double oven instrument (Siemens Sichromat 2) equipped with a “live switching” coupling piece was used for the necessary measurements.

Notes: An analytical technique is described which allows the determination of C2—C6 hydrocarbons in the ppt-range from up to 21 air samples after removal of air humidity. Preconcentration is carried out on a two stage cryotrap system. The compounds are separ ated on a temperature-programmed capillary coated with Al2 O3. Detection limits (S/N 2:1) of 1.5 to 5 ppt were obtained for air samples from the Arctic. The reproducibility of the method was about 3% at the 50-100 ppt level. Practical problems are discussed in detail.

Notes: This paper reports on the development of a simple method for the determination of two perfluorinated hydrocarbons (C7F14 and C8F16) in air down to 0.2 ng/m3, for long range atmospheric tracer experiments. The organic vapors are adsorbed on graphitized carbon black, desorbed thermally and determined by capillary GC-ECD at subambient temperature. Optimization of the experimental conditions is described. The tracers were tested in a field experiment where SF6 was also released and the agreement was satisfactory.
