Earth-Science Reviews, 16(1), 21-55, https://doi.org/10.1016/0012-8252(80)90003-3

Description: Several amino acid diagenetic reactions, which take place in the deep-sea sedimentary environment, were investigated, using various Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) cores. Initially it was found that essentially all the amino acids in sediments are bound in peptide linkages; but, with increasing age, the peptide bonds undergo slow hydrolysis that results in an increasingly larger fraction of amino acids in the free state. The hydrolysis half-life in calcareous sediments was estimated to be ~1–2 million years, while in non-carbonate sediment the hydrolysis rate may be considerably slower. The amino acid compositions and the extent of racemization of several amino acids were determined in various fractions isolated from the sediments. These analyses demonstrated that the mechanism, kinetics, and rate of amino acid diagenesis are highly dependent upon the physical state (i.e., free, bound, etc.) in which the amino acids exist in the sedimentary environment. In the free state, serine and threonine were found to decompose primarily by a dehydration reaction, while in the bound state (residue or HCl-insoluble fraction) a reversible aldol-cleavage reaction is the main decomposition pathway of these amino acids. The change in amino acid composition of the residue fraction with time was suggested to be due to the hydrolysis of peptide bonds, while in foraminiferal tests the compositional changes over geological time are the result of various decomposition reactions. Reversible first-order racemization kinetics are not observed for free amino acids in sediments. The explanation for these anomalous kinetics involves a complex reaction series which includes the hydrolysis of peptide bonds and the very rapid racemization of free amino acids. The racemization rates of free amino acids in sediments were found to be many orders of magnitude faster than those predicted from elevated temperature experiments using free amino acids in aqueous solution. The racemization rate enhancement of free amino acids in sediments may be due to the catalysis of the reaction by trace metals. Reversible first-order kinetics are followed for amino acids in the residue fraction isolated from sediments; the rate of racemization in this fraction is slower than that predicted for protein-bound amino acids. Various applications of amino acid diagenetic reactions are discussed. Racemization and the decomposition reaction of serine and threonine can both be used, with certain limitations, to make rough age estimates of deep-sea sediments back to several million years. The extent of racemization in foraminiferal tests which have been dated by some other independent technique can be used to estimate geothermal gradients, and thus heat flows, and to evaluate the bottom water temperature history in certain oceanic areas.

Description: Einer Anregung des 11.
Description: According to a suggestion made by the 11th study group of Niederdollendorf a method of how to treat coloured originals of cartographic landscape representation has been developed and testet. A first stocktaking had confirmed the demand for such types of representation; although suitable techniques are available, a learnable and teachable method of treatment is needed which provides comparable results independent of the person incharge. In this case a slightly modified system of working steps has been used as a guideline for the treatment of maps which is a time-tested instruction for systematic procedure in thematic cartography. This method is not least influenced by the available records, corresponding either to a derivation of topographic maps on a consecutive scale or to the free treatment of thematic maps.

Description: The freshwater sponge, Spongilla lacustris, which usually occurs in an endosymbiosis with zoochlorellae, can be rendered aposymbiotic by providing darkened conditions. Utilizing this situation, we have determined, in situ, the contribution of the algal symbiont to the growth of this association. Pigment and ultrastructure analyses demonstrated that sponges maintained under darkened conditions were effectively aposymbiotic. Growth of sponges under normal conditions was significantly greater than for aposymbiotic organisms. In two separate experiments, aposymbiotic sponges grew to only 20% and 49% of the size of normal sponges. Clearance rate determinations revealed no difference in the feeding activities of normal aposymbiotic sponges on Aerobacter aerogenes or Chlamydomonas reinhardti. The contribution from symbionts appears important to the high growth rate of this sponge and its successful utilization of soft—bottom habitats. This work represents the first in situ determination of the contribution by an algal in an endosymbiosis with an invertebrate.

Description: Sand-mixed cultivated soils of different age and the original peat Substrates were analysed for their nitrogen content and for their distribution of organically bound nitrogen in different nitrogen fractions. With increasing age of sand-mixed cultivated bogs the degree of humification and the total nitrogen content of the organic matter increase as well in these soils. Corresponding with these changes the relative amounts of non hydrolysable , heterocyclically bound nitrogen increase more than the relative amounts of total hydrolysable nitrogen. In the course of this structural change of the organic matter the distribution pattern of organically bound nitrogen in different nitrogen fractions of the sand-mixed cultivated soils becomes simular to that which is known from isolated humic acids of podsolic soils or chernozems. The absolute amount of amino-acid-ni trogen per g organic matter increases with the age of sand-mixed cultivated soils too. A typical change in the distribution pattern of the different amino acids was not observed. On the other side a typical change in the distribution pattern of amino sugars takes place. Whereas the ratio of glucosamine to galacto samine in the original high moor peat is near 1, the corresponding ratio in the older sand-mixed cultivated soil is about 2,5.

Description: Water depth zonation of fifty nine benthonic foraminiferal species in marine sediment surfaces has been described. Some species are combined to groups which mark particular depth zones: an upper and lower shelf-fauna, an upper and lower slope fauna, and a shelf-slope fauna. Dependence on latitude could be ascertained for Textularia panamensis, and submergence effects for Hyalinea balthica.

    Publication Date: 2024-02-03
Description: The benthic foraminiferal populations along three traverses across the Northwest African continental margin were analyzed on the base of ca. 60 surface sediment samples. Depth ranges of 213 species were established and the main trends of vertical distribution are compared with those known from adjacent regions. Main faunal breaks occure at 100/200 m and 1000/1500 m depth of water. Some species show latitudinal distribution boundaries and the same applies to population density (standing stock), reflecting the regional distribution of nutrients supply by river discharge and upwelling processes. – High proportions of Bolivina test at the lower slope indicate extended downslope transport.

Description: Surface sediments from the continental slope and rise of North-West Africa between the Canary lslands and the Cape Verde Islands are mainly composed of silt-sized material (2-63 µm). A number of sampling profiles were run normal to the coast and the composition of the silt fraction was determined quantitatively by scanning electron microscope analysis. The carbonate portion of the sediment was found to be nearly exclusively of biogenic origin. The most important contributors are planktonic foraminifers and coccoliths with minor contributions derived from pteropods. Plankton-produced biogenic opal such as diatoms and radiolarians play a very minor role. The high production rates of opal-silica plankton which exists in the surface waters of the NW-African upwelling system does not give rise to corresponding increases of opal accumulation in the bottom sediment. Benthic producers consist mainly of foraminifers and molluscs but the entire input from benthic producers is extremely small. An exception to this occurs in the prodelta sediments of the Senegal river. Downslope particle transport is indicated by the occurrence of shallow-water coralline algae, ascidian sclerites and cliona boring chips and can be traced as far down as the continental rise. The non-carbonate silt fraction mostly consists of quartz which is derived as eolian dust from the Sahara desert by the Harmattan and the NE-Trade-wind system. The percentage of carbonate in the surface sediments directly indicates the relative proportions of autochthonous biogenic components and terrigenous allochthonous quartz particles.

Description: The genus Pseudoniphargus has long been considered monospecific. Its unique species, Ps. africanus, was supposed to occur on both sides of the Mediterranean, on the Atlantic side of the Iberian peninsula, on the Azores, and on Madeira, in localities ranging from the sea shore to more than 1000 m of altitude, and covering almost the entire natural salinity range (0-36\xe2\x80\xb0).\nA taxonomie revision revealed that at least nine named species and several unnamed forms (of which insufficient material is available) hide under the name Ps. africanus, each with a narrow ecological and geographical range.\nThe evolutionary scenario of the members of the genus is discussed at some length: they are presumably of marine origin, and got adapted to conditions of continental waters during various marine regressions in the Eocene and Oligoc\xc3\xa8ne, but notably in the Miocene.

Description: The freshwater ostracods living exclusively in interstitial and/or interstitial and cavernous habitats belong to the Candoninae, Pseudolimnocytherinae, Timiriaseviinae, Kliellinae and Darwinulidae. An assessment of the antiquity of several interstitial ostracod groups has been attempted using direct evidence from the phylogenetical affinities between living hypogean and fossil ostracod species, and indirect evidence from the morphological characters of the subterranean ostracods and from the bio- and paleobiogeographical distribution of the different ostracod groups.

After fertilization the female inflorescence becomes cone-like, the woody bracts subtending winged achenes. Seeds without endosperm. One genus indigenous in the southern hemisphere. 40\xe2\x80\x9450 species, mostly in Australia.

Description: INTRODUCTION\nDuring a preliminary investigation in 1977 and the beginning of 1978 on the benthic infauna of the seagrass communities formed by Zostera marina L. and Zostera noltii Hornem, in The Netherlands, the polychaete Malacoceros fuliginosus (Clapar\xc3\xa8de, 1869) was found. In Europe this spionid has been recorded earlier from Sweden (Hannerz, 1956), Denmark (Rasmussen, 1956, 1973), Germany (Westheide, 1966; Giere, 1968), England (Day, 1934), France (Bellan, 1964; Gu\xc3\xa9rin, 1975) and The Netherlands (Wolff, 1973). In The Netherlands only two specimens had been found, viz. one in the mouth of the Oosterschelde and another one in the North Sea.\nDuring our investigation many animals were collected, mainly in Lake Grevelingen, a stagnant salt-water lake in the SW of The Netherlands, which was separated from the influences of the river Rhine in 1964 and from the North Sea in 1971. In the seagrass communities in the Oosterschelde no specimens and in the Dutch Wadden Sea two specimens have been found near the salt marsh "De Ans", south of the island Terschelling.\nThis paper deals with the morphological characters of M. fuliginosus in Lake Grevelingen and provides some data on the ecology.\n\nMETHODS\nThe benthic infauna was collected with a sediment core (\xc3\x98 9 cm). The samples were taken randomly in a Zostera bed. The cores were driven to a depth of 10 cm below the sediment surface. Each sample was sieved through 0.5 mm mesh size and preserved in 70% alcohol.\nThe four sampling sites were: 1. Lake Grevelingen (close to Herkingen). From May 1977 till April

Description: Among collections recently (1979) made in the surroundings of Kutacane, Aceh, N. Sumatra, by Mr. and Mrs. De Wilde, a grass has turned up which proved to be a species of Chikusichloa Koidz., a genus sofar known only from South China, Japan, and the Ryukyu Islands. As this is a very interesting find and since the genus is new for the Flora Malesiana area, a few notes seem appropriate.\nChikusichloa was originally described in the Paniceae by Koidzumi (1925), based on C. aquatica Koidz. from Kyushu. The author pointed out a resemblance to Zizania L., which is now considered to belong to the Oryzeae. Honda (1930) recognized its special position and created a subtribe Paniceae-Chikusichloeae. Keng (1931) correctly placed it in the Oryzeae, pointing out possible affinities with Zizaniopsis Doell & Aschers. and Hydrochloa Beauv. Ohwi (1942-a) recognized the subtribe, also, now in the Oryzeae, and added Hydrochloa to it; he corrected the spelling to Chikusichloinae. The two genera seem indeed distinct from the other Oryzeae by the very much reduced to absent glumes and sterile lemmas, the longstipitate fertile lemma, which is dorsoventrally flattened at anthesis, and not laterally so, and which becomes more or less terete in fruit. Otherwise the two do not resemble each other very much.

Description: The monotypic genus Urariopsis, based on Uraria cordifolia Wall., has been compared with several S.E. Asiatic species of Uraria. The species Uraria prunellaefolia, U. collettii, and U. barbata are considered to be most closely related to U. cordifolia. The pods of U. cordifolia and U. collettii consist of longitudinally flattened, peltate loments, those of U. prunellaefolia consist of laterally flattened, longitudinally arranged loments; in the other species the loments are laterally flattened and zig-zag folded. No correlating characters were found, and the differences in shape of the pods are not considered sufficient ground to distinguish groups on generic level. Notes on morphology, nomenclature, and geographic distribution are presented.

Description: Entoloma subgenus Nolanea (emend. Romagnesi 1978) is revised on account of personal observations and studies on collections from various herbaria. The types of European taxa, as far as they could be recovered, have been examined. Observations on extralimital taxa are included. The infrageneric classification of Romagnesi (1978) is followed in broad outline with some slight alterations: sect. Papillata is emended by including sections Minuta Romagn. and Cosmeoxonema Fernandae, Largent & Thiers. One new section, viz. sect. and four new subsections, viz. subsect. Tristia, Icterina, Infularia, and Cheilocystidiata are introduced. 54 Taxa are recognized, five of which are new: Entoloma sericeum var. cinereo-opacum, E. fernandae f. eccilioides, E. chlorophyllum, E. globulifer, and E. sphaerocystis. Several new combinations are proposed, viz. Entoloma ambrosium, E. clandestinum, E. conferendum, E. conferendum var. pusillum, E. cuspidifer, E. hirtipes var. sericoides, E. inutile, E. infula, E. sacchariolens, E. sericeoides, E. sericeonitens, E. sericeum f. nolaniforme. E. solstitiale, E. verecundum, and Entoloma sect. Staurospora, sect. Turfosa, subsect. Cosmeoxonema, subsect. Fibulata, and subsect. Minuta. For nomenclatural reasons two new names are introduced, viz. Entoloma leptopus to replace Nolanea tenuipes P. D. Orton and E. foetulentum to replace Nolanea foetida Killermann. Keys, descriptions and illustrations are given to all species accepted. In an appendix doubtful and excluded species are briefly discussed.
