Description: Measurements have been conducted of the amounts and isotopic composition of Xe and Kr in silicate inclusions of several iron meteorites. It is shown that the Xe and Kr contents are comparable to chondritic values. The isotopic compositions show trapped gas of both chondritic and atmospheric composition. Large spallation effects occur in some of the meteorites; the spallation spectra in some instances differ from those reported for stone meteorites. In several meteorites, very large neutron capture effects on Br and I occur. All samples have pronounced Xe129 excesses which apparently indicate differences in the formation times from chondrites of less than about 100 million years; however, the presence of trapped Xe132 in silicates which were enclosed in molten Fe-Ni and cooled slowly proves that they were not entirely outgassed, so that some of the Xe129 excess may also be trapped.

Description: Review of some recent contributions of X-ray spectroscopy to knowledge about solar active regions and flares. As an example of the importance of X-ray spectroscopy, it is pointed out that, while there are no emission lines from highly ionized silicon in the visible spectrum, the XUV spectrum has emission lines from SiIX through SiXIV. Jordan's (1969) calculations of ionization equilibria for silicon and iron are illustrated by diagrams and discussed. The observation of SiXIV gives evidence for regions having electron temperatures from 5 to 20 million deg. The ability to record the corona against the disk of the sun has enabled Van Speybroeck et al. (1970) to identify many bright diffuse X-ray emitting regions with remnants of old active regions of the type giving rise to unipolar magnetic regions. The physical characteristics of the hot coronal plasma associated with chromospheric flares are outlined on the basis of current observations.

Description: Description of three sources in the Large Magellanic Cloud and one in the Small Cloud which have been discovered by Uhuru. These sources each emit about 10 to the 38th erg/sec in the 2- to 7-keV band, and they account for more than 90% of the total emission from the Clouds. The source in the Small Cloud shows time variability on time scales of hours.

Description: The research in the program for designing and fabricating payloads for sounding rockets for use in X-ray astronomy is reported. Published papers concerning six Aerobee flights are presented. The results include: (1) the establishment of the radio galaxy M87 as an X-ray source; (2) the studies of the pulsar NPO532, including its X-ray pulse shape, the determination of the synchronism of the optical and X-ray pulses and the codiscovery of its existence as an X-ray pulsar; (3) the determination of many X-ray source positions, and (4) the precise position of Cyg X-1 which led directly to the identification of a ninth magnitude BO supergiant.
