Description / Table of Contents:
Morphological structure and formation of cracks in crystallizing macromolecular materialsAfter a brief survey of present-day knowledge of morphological structures (laminations, fibrels and spherulites), the author discusses the tests carried out to obtain some knowledge about the internal crack system of macro-molecular materials with the aid of permeation and diffusion measurements on terylene films as a function of the degree of crystallisation and of temperature. It is found that, with careful thermal and mechanical treatment, it is quite possible to avoid the formation of major continuous cracks and a corresponding degree of corrosion proneness.Cracks may occur if the crystallisation process is continued for too long a time at too high temperatures. In this case, microscopic examinations or X-ray crystal density methods may be applied. The last section deals with tests carried out to explore the formation of cracks in coarse-crystalline iso-tactic polypropylene, caused by wetting agents. Cracks are found to occur partly already during crystallisation, and partly during the subsequent cooling; they occur in the direction of the spherulite radii as well as along the grain boundaries.
Notes:
