    Description: Based on a research project of the University of Tuscia and of the Alta Scuola SPI-CGIL, the volume delves into Bruno Trentin’s intellectual and political thought, from the CGIL General Secretary to his role in the European Parliament. A network of transnational relationships emerges, stretching from the USA to Europe, from Latin America to South Africa, from the Mediterranean to the Middle East. The ‘Sindacato dei Diritti’ and the European project of the CGIL are thus transferred into the socialist family, in line with Delors’ proposal of a Federation of Nation States, and into the battle of the ‘Spinelli Group’ in favour of the coordination of economic and social policies, of the European Constitution, and of a united Europe in foreign policy and defence. The volume is enriched by unpublished documents in Italian, French, English and Spanish.

A questo hanno contribuito pure i molteplici interessi di Gianfranco Fiaccadori, al quale il volume è dedicato: per oltre un decennio ha profuso nell’Ateneo milanese entusiasmo e competenze, stimolando gli studi dei giovani e avviando ricerche tuttora in atto. Il ricordo vuole essere il segno di gratitudine per un evento voluto e organizzato con il consueto rigore, del quale purtroppo Gianfranco non ha potuto vedere concretamente i frutti.

    Description: The 43rd UID conference, held in Genova, takes up the theme of ‘Dialogues’ as practice and debate on many fundamental topics in our social life, especially in these complex and not yet resolved times. The city of Genova offers the opportunity to ponder on the value of comparison and on the possibilities for the community, naturally focused on the aspects that concern us, as professors, researchers, disseminators of knowledge, or on all the possibile meanings of the discipline of representation and its dialogue with ‘others’, which we have broadly catalogued in three macro areas: History, Semiotics, Science / Technology. Therefore, “dialogue” as a profitable exchange based on a common language, without which it is impossible to comprehend and understand one another; and the graphic sign that connotes the conference is the precise transcription of this concept: the title ‘translated’ into signs, derived from the visual alphabet designed for the visual identity of the UID since 2017. There are many topics which refer to three macro sessions: - Witnessing (signs and history) - Communicating (signs and semiotics) - Experimenting (signs and sciences) Thanks to the different points of view, an exceptional resource of our disciplinary area, we want to try to outline the prevailing theoretical-operational synergies, the collaborative lines of an instrumental nature, the recent updates of the repertoires of images that attest and nourish the relations among representation, history, semiotics, sciences.

By starting from a concept of borders as a social construct, the authors look at selected cases of transcending spatial, cultural and legal boundaries in the Middle Ages.     Chapter Privacy online tra bambini e adolescenti: concezione, preoccupazione e tutela (2023)

    Description: The general aim of this study is to investigate how kids and adolescents conceptualize online privacy and the concern about their online privacy through a developmental perspective, while also trying to understand its impact on a safe online surfing environment. Three studies were conducted: 1) a systematic review, which was aimed to clarify the relative strengths and weaknesses of the literature about the construct of online privacy and online privacy concerns among kids and adolescents; 2) a qualitative study, aimed to understand how adolescents define – and consequently understand – the concept of online privacy; 3) a quantitative study, which aimed at addressing whether online surfing is associated with online privacy concerns and with GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) differently across different ages during adolescence. Finally, the results of the three studies were analysed and discussed in light of the theory background. An analysis of the literature showed how children may have difficulties to fully understand risks in unusual contexts, and that they can have difficulties in responding to situations when they struggled to recognise or understand fully the risks involved. The results of the three studies are discussed, underlining how adolescents understand their online privacy, if they are concerned about their data online, how we should help them manage better their privacy online, and how we should design services, applications and devices to help kids understand better the implication of the Internet on their ‘onlife’ (Floridi, 2015).

    Chapter Gli studi superiori a Firenze dal primo Novecento alla nascita dell’Università (2024)

    Description: The article describes the history of higher education in Florence from the beginning of the twentieth century until the mid-1920s, when the ancient Institute of Higher Studies, founded in 1859, was transformed into a modern University. The development of the university institution is reconstructed through the detailed analysis of the annual reports presented by the superintendents of the Institute and making use of the unpublished documents preserved in the historical archives of the University. Particular attention is paid to the evolution of the number of enrolled students and graduates, as well as to the expansion of the training offer made possible by the opening of new faculties and new laboratories. Finally, the article focuses on some important professors, such as the physicist Antonio Garbasso who was also mayor of Florence, and the historian Gaetano Salvemini who was one of the leaders of the anti-fascist movement and, due to his political positions, in 1925 he was forced to leave the University to emigrate to the United States.

    Description: Hugo von Hofmannsthal's Elektra constitutes an important turning point in the transition from early lyric to theatre. Inspired by Sophocles' drama, but with elements more similar to Euripides', it proposes a linguistic connotation, characterisation of the characters and a completely innovative and unconventional staging. Blood, a concrete representation of the unprecedented violence that characterises the entire drama, is the red thread that links the succession of events. Words turn into weapons and the protagonist's thirst for vengeance drives the action. The finale culminates in a supreme act of violence that sees the roles reversed: the executioners become victims and the victims executioners. This is the only solution to end the circle of brutal suffering.

    Description: In academic and/or cultural debate, the word «Mediterranean» elicits mixed reactions and is revealing of normative considerations and the role of politics. This chapter explores two different perspectives that emerge from the extensive literature on this subject, and suggests a third, inspired by the contemporary trend of the debate (or rather, its absence). First, the chapter examines conceptions of the Mediterranean as a unitary entity or political actor in and of itself. The Mediterranean as a «cradle of civilization», originally described by Braudel, has been taken up more recently by Horden and Purcell, who emphasized the central role of connectivity between local communities, and by the Italian school of geo-philosophy headed by Bassano, for whom the Mediterranean is a specific value system to be respected. A second perspective emphasizes instead the Mediterranean as an area of conflict, characterized by deep fault lines. Huntington's position, captured by the expression «clash of civilizations», has been taken up and reworked by the post-colonial perspective, which sees the Mediterranean as an area characterized by permanent tensions. The chapter suggests a third option, however, noting that the word «Mediterranean» is disappearing from political vocabularies.

    Description: The volume investigates the management of the “time” factor in the context of constitutional justice from the point of view of the modulation of the effects over time of the declaration of unconstitutionality and the technique of referral to the legislature. The analysis is intertwined with the study of the German experience of incompatibility decisions, which allow the German Federal Constitutional Court to declare only the incompatibility of a rule and, at the same time, to order the legislature to intervene to remove the constitutional defect. An in-depth study of this type of decision allows us to highlight some important aspects on the governance of the effects of the declaration of unconstitutionality and on the decision-making technique of unconstitutionality envisaged in Italian constitutional justice.

    Description: At the time of Leonardo da Vinci, numerous landfalls and transversal passages along the Arno made it easily crossable and navigable in Tuscany, from Valdichiana to the coast. In order to develop a specific knowledge of such elements, and to restore a valuable analytical tile for the recognition of the territorial heritage related to Leonardo’s hydraulic design, this chapter presents the work carried out by the authors to map ports, ships, passes and mills along the Arno river course, from Florence to Pisa, also in view of a theoretical reflection on the importance of the water system at Leonardo’s time.

    Description: 1938 is the year in which racial laws were implemented in Italy. Even in areas with low Jewish presence, such as Sesto Fiorentino, the obligation to register, identify and supervise the few resident Jews was imposed. The chapters of this volume reconstruct the reflections and the consequences of this legislation. Through an investigation starting from the archives of Sesto Fiorentino, and then enriched with other sources, various aspects are explored: the census lists, the presence and surveillance of foreign Jews, the free internment, the application of the laws at school and in the Biblioteca Circolante. Unpublished material reconstructs the precepting of Jews from the Florentine area to work and on the fate of those who, after 1943, found themselves in Sesto Fiorentino.

    Description: Contact with Western civilisation generated an enormous amount of translation of Western writings in Japan in the second half of the 19th century. Society and culture of modern Japan were built on this great undertaking, but discrepancies between the source and target languages can create complex entanglements. It is certainly fascinating to pay attention to the very entanglements created in the process of moving from the original language to the language of translation. From this point of view, one of the most interesting examples, the subject of this essay, is the term res publica/republic and its Japanese translation kyōwa, due to their linguistic distances and intersections.

    Description: Music plays an important role in many religions and in a variety of religious contexts. Music and Religion: Texts on Music in Religion and Religion in Music takes a look at the intersections between music and religion. We experience religion in music, and in religion we encounter musical expression. Although music and religion are unquestionably mutually pervasive, we can also come across gaps between them: Is it possible to move beyond a musical experience toward a religious one without having to hop over this gap? And is there any direct route from religion into music as an acoustic phenomenon? Without a religious interpretation of the music remaining? There is a wealth of research about music and religion, but little on how they meet. That is what this anthology seeks to remedy. Music and Religion will be relevant for anyone with an interest in encounters between these two phenomena. It will be especially relevant for students in performing, composing and scientific music education, as well as theology and religious studies. The anthology has been edited by Henrik Holm (associate professor in education at Oslo Metropolitan University and professor in philosophy at Rudolf Steiner University College) and Øivind Varkøy (professor in music education and music sciences at the Norwegian Academy of Music and professor II in music at Oslo Metropolitan University).

    Description: From the 1920s onwards, the Soviet Union became a favourite destination for Italian writers, travellers who took it upon themselves to interpret and present the new Soviet world to Italian readers by sending articles to newspapers and magazines, most of which were later published as monographs. The present study aims to investigate the reasons that drove so many intellectuals to visit Russia and the Soviet territories after the October. Through references to historical and political ideologies that may have influenced the writers’ interpretations, the reconstruction of travel conditions and individual approaches to Soviet life, the study focuses on Italian intellectuals’ views on the USSR and the particular value that the reportages had in the construction of the image of the Soviet world in the Italian reality.

    Description: The 43rd UID conference, held in Genova, takes up the theme of ‘Dialogues’ as practice and debate on many fundamental topics in our social life, especially in these complex and not yet resolved times. The city of Genova offers the opportunity to ponder on the value of comparison and on the possibilities for the community, naturally focused on the aspects that concern us, as professors, researchers, disseminators of knowledge, or on all the possibile meanings of the discipline of representation and its dialogue with ‘others’, which we have broadly catalogued in three macro areas: History, Semiotics, Science / Technology.     Description: This contribution intends to propose a reflection on the theatrical production of the Angolan Artur Carlos Pestana dos Santos, better known as Pepetela, an author who has always combined his literary vocation with his political commitment in the struggle for liberation from Portuguese colonialism (pepetela, meaning 'eyelash' in the Kimbundu language, originated as a militant battle name in the ranks of the MPLA). Pepetela, who has more than 20 novels and short stories to his credit, has only forayed into dramaturgy on two occasions, in the late 1970s, with the publication of A corda (written in 1976 and published in 1978) and A revolta da casa dos ídolos (written in 1979 and published in 1980). Both pièces are set in the socio-political context of the post-independence period and - both directly and allegorically, in dialogue with Brecht's epic theatre, but also with Augusto Boal's Teatro do oprimido - stage old and new conflicts between the dominators and the dominated.

    Description: The historical phase we are living, which is characterized by change management and the continuous redefinition of skills (Fiore et al. 2021), invites the university to question itself on the central role it plays for the formation of current and future. The work of the European Commission to address the improvement and adaptation of the skills of European citizens provides clear guidelines on which Higher Education is also called to commit. Among them, this paper focuses on the development of entrepreneurial skills, i.e. the ability to act on opportunities and ideas and to transform them into value for others. The Commission calls for the development of these competences at all levels of education, giving rise to entrepreneurial education training offers (Lackéus 2015). For this reason, and in order to respond to this need, since 2013 the Italian Ministry of University has established the Contamination Labs, places of contamination between students, teachers and local stakeholders aimed at developing interdisciplinary entrepreneurial education, which is also the subject of this research.

    Description: The Common Slavic *bogŭ ‘god’ displays an astonishingly rich derivation across Slavic languages, both numerically and semantically, with lexemes including almost all parts of speech: inflected (nouns, adjectives, verbs, pronouns) and not inflected (adverbs, connectives, prepositions). In this article the author pays special attention to the exclamations and other exclamation-related expressions containing this base word, as well as providing a description of the syntactic patterns from which such lexical units are generated and a brief analysis of the semantic processes (lexicalization, refunctionalization) from which they derive.

    Description: For the elderly, the right to choose where and with whom to live takes on special significance: it is related to the overcoming of ageism, of which both paternalism and a segregationist and institutionalizing approach to old age are part. Nevertheless, so far, the multilevel politics concerning active and healthy aging, the right to independent living, the ageing in place and the transition to ""new"" models of welfare have not really been able to remedy the exclusion experienced by many older people socially and in the urban context. For this reason, the elderly’s right to the (age-friendly) city is still, at least in part, not adequately guaranteed. The essays collected in this volume are the outcome of an interdisciplinary research focused primarily on the municipality of Ferrara (one of the Italian cities most affected by population aging) but have also a more general relevance. They aim at reflecting on the complex intertwining of the needs and rights of the elderly population and, in particular, on their right to lead a life of dignity and independence (also) within the urban context.

    Description: The correspondence between Franco Fortini and Carlo Cassola covers a wide range of time, from 1955 to 1981 and focuses on three core themes: the journey to China in 1955 and the writing of two reportages on this topic; the events of 1965 and the literary fervour arisen around left-wing journals; Cassola’s poetic and literary production, enriched with Fortini’s critical notes. However, and the same time, the correspondence between Cassola and Fortini also shows the birth (and developments) of a complex relationship, characterized by friendship and reciprocal influence, that involves two among the most well-known figures of the twentieth century. The correspondence represents a unique resource for the analysis of the legacy, poetics and cultural background of the two great authors.

    Description: Along the 11th century florentine bishops attempted to reinforce the diocese. Their initiatives were supported by Hucpoldings, an illustrious kindred group born in Florence in the mid of the 9th century and spreaded over the Kingdom of Italy. Yet at that time some members of the group were still keeping important interests in the city and in its comitatus. Particularly, the aristocratic kinship known as Adimari had created a strong backing link with the florentine bishopric about the year one thousand. Inspired by their forefathers’ political and cultural heritage, they alternately adapted carolingian patterns of social interaction to contemporary times and needs. In that way they perpetuated their lay leadership over the half of the century.

    Description: Leonardo’s interest in Vitruvian machinatio, subservient to the needs of military architecture, starts with the return of the Sienese tradition involving mechanisms used both in civil and military fields. Whilst Martini’s influence on his military studies is partly known, very little is as yet known about the extent to which they were influenced by direct observation of fortified cities.     Description: The 43rd UID conference, held in Genova, takes up the theme of ‘Dialogues’ as practice and debate on many fundamental topics in our social life, especially in these complex and not yet resolved times. The city of Genova offers the opportunity to ponder on the value of comparison and on the possibilities for the community, naturally focused on the aspects that concern us, as professors, researchers, disseminators of knowledge, or on all the possibile meanings of the discipline of representation and its dialogue with ‘others’, which we have broadly catalogued in three macro areas: History, Semiotics, Science / Technology. Therefore, “dialogue” as a profitable exchange based on a common language, without which it is impossible to comprehend and understand one another; and the graphic sign that connotes the conference is the precise transcription of this concept: the title ‘translated’ into signs, derived from the visual alphabet designed for the visual identity of the UID since 2017. There are many topics which refer to three macro sessions: - Witnessing (signs and history) - Communicating (signs and semiotics) - Experimenting (signs and sciences) Thanks to the different points of view, an exceptional resource of our disciplinary area, we want to try to outline the prevailing theoretical-operational synergies, the collaborative lines of an instrumental nature, the recent updates of the repertoires of images that attest and nourish the relations among representation, history, semiotics, sciences.

This course was used as a trial for the peer-review teaching method, which can be useful in classes with a high number of students; this publication also includes a selection of the best works produced by the students. The results of the trial prove the advantages of using the peer-review teaching method for other university courses, and the students' works on e-health give current medical practitioners insights on how to use ICT in their practice with skill and care.

    Description: Markov chains represent a classical topic of probability theory that has a large number of applications in different areas, including mathematics, computer science, physics, biology, natural science, economics and several others. Typical examples of Markovian models concern for instance the analysis and interpretation of DNA sequences, voice recognition and the design of procedures for analysis and browsing of the web. In computer science and in particular in the algorithmic area Markov chains have been used to introduce the so-called Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods, which allow us to design probabilistic approximation algorithms for solving NP-hard problems. This work presents Markov chains and their algorithmic applications in a mathematical style, with a didactic spirit. It mainly has educational purposes, and it is specifically designed for teaching these topics in Italian university courses at a master level.

Esempi tipici di modelli markoviani riguardano l'analisi e l’interpretazione di sequenze di DNA, il riconoscimento di segnali vocali, il disegno di procedure di esplorazione e analisi della rete web. In un ambito informatico e soprattutto algoritmico le catene di Markov hanno dato origine ai cosiddetti metodi Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC), che consentono di definire algoritmi probabilistici di approssimazione per problemi difficili dal punto di vista computazionale. Questo testo presenta le catene di Markov e alcune loro applicazioni algoritmiche in uno stile matematico con un taglio principalmente didattico, rivolto in particolare agli studenti dei corsi di laurea magistrale a carattere scientifico delle università italiane.

    Description: This book presents 27 operational techniques useful for making the practice of reading aloud as effective as possible in the educational structures dealing with children up to 6 years of age, by following a bottom-up approach. The methodological proposals are organised in three sections: Gaining and Developing Attention, Creating Interest in Stories and Encouraging Participation and Book Culture. The research took into account hundreds of suggestions formulated by scholars, educators and teachers who are experts in reading aloud, as well as by a group of researchers. It explored the specialised bibliography and websites dedicated to reading aloud and involved, through interviews, educators and teachers of nursery schools and preschools from the 35 Education Zones of the Region of Tuscany. However, only recently have some of these students have begun entering university. This lag can be explained by the fact that a history of migration brings with it multiple economic, social and educational disadvantages and weaknesses. The book More than is required. Tales of university students with a migrant background is a collection of biographies of young people who, having exceeded society’s common expectations —and therefore having done “more than is required"—have achieved exceptional scholastic results, leading them to wish to continue their studies at university.     Description: The book illustrates the results of a wide-ranging survey of the overall situation of the olive oil market and the Italian production chain for olives and olive oil. Based on the results of this investigation, two possible prospects for development have been identified. The first follows the guidelines that prevail at Community level, favouring a specialist olive cultivation. The second instead aims at a valorisation of agriculture where it features social aspects of particular significance. From this viewpoint the various olive farms in Italy ought not to be considered in a standardised manner, but individually valorised in relation to their different functions, which are not necessarily expressed in terms of yield.
    Description: Il volume illustra i risultati di una ampia ricognizione sulla situazione complessiva del mercato oleario e sulla filiera produttiva italiana olivicolo-olearia. Sulla base dei risultati di tale indagine vengono individuate due possibili prospettive di sviluppo. La prima segue gli indirizzi prevalenti a livello comunitario che favoriscono una olivicoltura specializzata. La seconda punta ad una valorizzazione dell'agricoltura dove questa presenti aspetti sociali particolarmente rilevanti. In questa prospettiva le diverse olivicolture presenti nel Paese dovrebbero essere considerate non in modo omogeneo, ma valorizzate in relazione alle diverse funzioni svolte, non necessariamente esprimibili in termini di rese.
