In einer entangled history unterschiedlicher Migrationsbewegungen nach 1945 werden die Wege des Wissens sichtbar: von den Zwangsmigrationen im Gefolge des Zweiten Weltkriegs, den DP-Camps der Nachkriegszeit und den kommunistischen Exilgruppen in der DDR über »Sonderkurse« und Heimerziehung für über- und ausgesiedelte Jugendliche aus Mittel- und Osteuropa während des Kalten Kriegs bis hin zu internationalen Vorbereitungsklassen, muttersprachlichem Unterricht und islamischem Religions-Unterricht für Arbeitsmigrant:innen und Asylsuchende. Die Autorin stützt sich auf zahlreiche neu erschlossene Quellen. Mit ihrer Studie regt sie dazu an, über Migration und ihre Wirkungen neu nachzudenken und kommt zu einer im Grundsatz optimistische Prognose für Einwanderungsgesellschaften in Europa.

    Description: Advances in UAE Archaeology details the results of new excavations conducted across the United Arab Emirates over the last few years. These excavations have revealed a wealth of new data on all periods of UAE archaeology from the Palaeolithic to the recent past. Some of these discoveries have filled in important gaps in our knowledge, while others have fundamentally revised what we thought we knew already. For example, the Marawah Island excavations have added a new facet to our understanding of the Neolithic period by revealing intriguing and hitherto unknown funerary rituals. Excavations in Al Ain in the emirate of Abu Dhabi continue to reveal extraordinary evidence of emgt falaj emgirrigation, stretching back 3000 years. The ubiquity of this system across this oasis city further validates its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Of particular importance is the discovery of extensive remains from the Late Pre-Islamic period, a significant time in history that has been best revealed in the excavations at Mleiha in the emirate of Sharjah.The research presented here was conducted by specialists from across the world working alongside an ever-growing cadre of Emirati archaeologists who will take the lead in the coming years in revealing more of this country’s extraordinary archaeology and history.

    Description: Throughout the 1920s and 30s Prague was the intellectual center of Ukrainian émigrés in Europe, not least because of significant financial support from the Czechoslovak government and its first president, Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, for émigré students and intellectuals. On the basis of extensive archival research in Ottawa, Prague, and Kyiv, Zavorotna outlines the continuation of Ukrainian scholarship in history, linguistics, pedagogy, the visual arts, and other disciplines at various institutions in Prague and Poděbrady. These schools constitute the critical link between Ukrainian intellectual life before World War One and postwar émigré communities in Canada and the United States.

    Description: Between Roman Culture and Local Tradition presents a detailed analysis of the Roman provincial coinage of Bithynia and Pontus during the reign of Trajan (98-117), when 14 cities struck coins. The book characterises individual mints, the rhythm of monetary production, iconography and legends, and considers the attribution and dating of individual issues. Context is provided by studies on other categories of artefacts discovered in the local area, including epigraphic and material ones, such as fine art, sculptures and architectural remains. The extent of circulation is also analysed, as well as the coinage of the border centres of neighbouring provinces such as Thrace, Asia and Galatia-Cappadocia. Reference is made to historical sources, principally the correspondence of Pliny the Younger with the emperor, which can help to show the realities of life for the inhabitants of individual centres, including ongoing construction projects or local problems. Overall the book aims to reconstruct the coinage policy of individual cities and culture and religion in various centres during this period, as well as contacts and relationships among the local communities. In turn, the studies of individual cities allow for the creation of a general picture of coinage in the province.

    Description: The region that is today the Republic of Macedonia was long the heart of the Ottoman Empire in Europe. It was home to a complex mix of peoples and faiths who had for hundreds of years lived together in relative peace. To be sure, these people were no strangers to coercive violence and various forms of depredations visited upon them by bandits and state agents. In the final decades of the nineteenth century and throughout the twentieth century, however, the region was periodically racked by bitter conflict that was qualitatively different from previous outbreaks of violence. In Blood Ties, İpek K. Yosmaoğlu explains the origins of this shift from sporadic to systemic and pervasive violence through a social history of the “Macedonian Question.”

    Description: A major phase of economic expansion occurred in southern England during the second and early first millennium BC, accompanied by a fundamental shift in regional power and wealth towards the eastern lowlands. This book offers a synthesis of available data on Bronze Age lowland field systems in England, including a gazetteer of sites. The research demonstrates the importance of large-scale animal husbandry in the mixed farming regimes as evidenced in the design of the field systems which incorporate droveways, stock proof fencing, watering holes, cow pens, sheep races and gateways for stockhandling. It is argued that the field systems represented a form of conspicuous production, an "intensification" of agrarian endeavour or a statement of intent, to be understood in relation to the maintenance, display and promotion of hierarchical social systems involved in exchange with their counterparts across the English Channel.
