    Description: The chapter highlights the centrality of advocacy work for adult learners, particularly from marginalised and excluded communities, as a key feature of the work of Lalage Bown and its scope nationally and internationally. It explores effective work in representing the experience and demands of adult learners, and those who work with them, undertaken by adult learning associations at a national, regional and global level. The three examples considered are the work of the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE) in England and Wales, notably around the creation of Adult Learners’ Week as festival and advocacy tool; the work of the Asian South Pacific Association for Basic and Adult Education (ASPBAE), in combining research-based policy work and advocacy, regionally and globally alongside developing advocacy skills among its members; and the work of the International Council for Adult Education, the global non-governmental association for adult learning, and the work of its International Academy for Lifelong Learning Advocacy in strengthening practitioners’ capacity to engage with global decision making processes affecting adult learning. The chapter concludes with reflections on the key skills needed for successful advocacy.

    Description: The Common Slavic *bogŭ ‘god’ displays an astonishingly rich derivation across Slavic languages, both numerically and semantically, with lexemes including almost all parts of speech: inflected (nouns, adjectives, verbs, pronouns) and not inflected (adverbs, connectives, prepositions). In this article the author pays special attention to the exclamations and other exclamation-related expressions containing this base word, as well as providing a description of the syntactic patterns from which such lexical units are generated and a brief analysis of the semantic processes (lexicalization, refunctionalization) from which they derive.

    Description: “Learn from Gorky”: “conversion” of Japanese proletarian wrier Tokunaga Sunao. In the proletarian literary movement that flourished in Japan in the 1920s and 1930s, the main goal of proletarian literature was considered for intellectual writers to awaken the will to revolution in working readers. The writer from working class Sunao Tokunaga after the collapse of the revolutionary movement in 1933 began to write stories based on the life and attitude of the working people, offering to “learn from Gorky” and his autobiographical works that depicted the behavior and attitude of people at the bottom of society. At the same time, Tokunaga was involved in the colonial movement of the Japanese Empire of that time, because he, as a result of identification with the Japanese workers, lost sight of the expulsion and oppression of the indigenous people in Manchuria.

    Description: Translating Russian Literature in the Global Context examines the translation and reception of Russian literature as a world-wide process. This volume aims to provoke new debate about the continued currency of Russian literature as symbolic capital for international readers, in particular for nations seeking to create or consolidate cultural and political leverage in the so-called ‘World Republic of Letters’. It also seeks to examine and contrast the mechanisms of the translation and uses of Russian literature across the globe. This collection presents academic essays, grouped according to geographical location, by thirty-seven international scholars. Collectively, their expertise encompasses the global reception of Russian literature in Europe, the Former Soviet Republics, Africa, the Americas, and Asia. Their scholarship concentrates on two fundamental research areas: firstly, constructing a historical survey of the translation, publication, distribution and reception of Russian literature, or of one or more specific Russophone authors, in a given nation, language, or region; and secondly, outlining a socio-cultural microhistory of how a specific, highly influential local writer, genre, or literary group within the target culture has translated, transmitted, or adapted aspects of Russian literature in their own literary production. Each section is prefaced with a short essay by the co-editors, surveying the history of the reception of Russian literature in the given region. Considered as a whole, these chapters offer a wholly new overview of the extent and intercultural penetration of Russian and Soviet literary soft power during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. This volume will open up Slavonic Translation Studies for the general reader, the student of Comparative Literature, and the academic scholar alike.

    Description: This is a book about impending catastrophe. The metaphorical insane “run“ ends with the outbreak of the First World War. The book focuses on European culture of the late nineteenth century and the Polish contribution to it. The word “dark“ used to describe modernity is understood as a metaphor of gradual and permanent devaluation of the idea of progress, as a fading hope for the future of Europe as bright, predictable, prosperous, and safe. The “darkening“ also receives a literal sense. At the end of the nineteenth century, darkness found its way back to the public space – in the theaters, panoramas, dioramas, and “love tunnels“, which awaited the visitors of American and European amusement parks.

    Description: One of literature's greatest gifts is its portrayal of realistically drawn characters--human beings in whom we can recognize motivations and emotions. In Imagined Human Beings, Bernard J. Paris explores the inner conflicts of some of literature's most famous characters, using Karen Horney's psychoanalytic theories to understand the behavior of these characters as we would the behavior of real people. When realistically drawn characters are understood in psychological terms, they tend to escape their roles in the plot and thus subvert the view of them advanced by the author. A Horneyan approach both alerts us to conflicts between plot and characterization, rhetoric and mimesis, and helps us understand the forces in the author's personalty that generate them. The Horneyan model can make sense of thematic inconsistencies by seeing them as the product of the author's inner divisions. Paris uses this approach to explore a wide range of texts, including Antigone, "The Clerk's Tale," The Merchant of Venice, A Doll's House, Hedda Gabler, Great Expectations, Jane Eyre, The Mayor of Casterbridge, Wuthering Heights, Madame Bovary, The Awakening, and The End of the Road.

    Description: The study tests the hypothesis according to which the Slavic anthroponyms in -e and -o underwent evolution from vocative endings to hypocoristic derivative suffixes and then to anthroponymic formants. According to the Author, such a hypothesis can be considered entirely plausible, albeit only as a mechanism of formation parallel to and intertwined with other processes of morphemic function change. As a phenomenon observable in both diachrony and synchrony, categorial lability between vocative and word formation can thus be considered inherent in the system of Slavic languages. However the anthroponyms in -e and -o have had different diffusion and distribution in the various Slavic languages and today occupy dissimilar places within the system and varieties of each language.

In this compelling study, Peggy Fitzhugh Johnstone goes beyond these traditional foci to examine the role of aggression in Eliot's fiction and to find its source in the author's unconscious sense of loss stemming from traumatic family separations and deaths during her childhood and adolescence. Makarenko’s Pedagogical Poem in the Stalin era was perceived as a eulogy to the collective, while in late Soviet times the dominance of the collective and the tendency to violent solutions already irritated the Russian reader. The German historian Goetz Hillig saw Makarenko as a world pedagogical genius, created his scientific biography, and published a scholarly edition of his writings in German. Elena Tolstaya looks at The Poem, set in post-revolutionary Ukraine, in the aspect of Russian-Ukrainian bilingualism, and looks for possible responses to the actualities of the late 20s – early 30s.

    Description: How successful is Dickens in his portrayal of women? Dickens has been represented (along with William Blake and D.H. Lawrence) as one who championed the life of the emotions often associated with the "feminine." Yet some of his most important heroines are totally submissive and docile. Dickens, of course, had to accept the conventions of his time. It is obvious, argues Holbrook, that Dickens idealized the father-daughter relationship, and indeed, any such relationship that was unsexual, like that of Tom Pinch and his sister—but why? Why, for example, is the image of woman so often associated with death, as in Great Expectations? Dickens's own struggles over relationships with women have been documented, but much less has been said about the unconscious elements behind these problems. Using recent developements in psychoanalytic object-relations theory, David Holbrook offers new insight into the way in which the novels of Dickens—particularly Bleak House, Little Dorrit, and Great Expectations—both uphold emotional needs and at the same time represent the limits of his view of women and that of his time.

    Description: The article is devoted to specific issues relating to the Polish reception of Ukrainian literature after 1989. In particular, the authors address the topic of the translation of Ukrainian literary works into Polish. Firstly, the major agents who choose and promote works that they deem should be translated into Polish are presented. The authors discuss the cases of two translators, Ola Hnatiuk and Bohdan Zadura, who have played crucial roles in this process and have also acted as literary agents. The image of Ukrainian literature conveyed to Polish readers reflects the ideals of the translators, their individual preferences and attitudes, and their conception of their own canon. Another outstanding agent is the publishing house Czarne: the article illustrates its peculiarities and its importance to the dissemination of Ukrainian literature in Poland. Secondly, the article concentrates on the translations from the point of view of the source language and examines the case of Russophone Ukrainian literature in order to explore the extent to which it is represented on the Polish book market. Finally, the authors try to assess whether and how the full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24th, 2022 has influenced the dynamics of the translation of Ukrainian literature into Polish.

    Description: Moscow at the turn of history. About the “toponymic upheaval” and not only. The article digs into the urban (and political) geography of Moscow and how this is perceived in Italy in the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union. In particular, the investigation will focus on a number of volumes related to the late Soviet era that were published in Italy between the late 1980s and the mid-1990s. The authors are mainly newspaper and TV correspondents: Vittorio Zucconi (1944-2019, Il Corriere della sera, Si fa presto a dire Russia); Demetrio Volcic (1931-2021, RAI, Mosca. I giorni della fine); Enrico Franceschini (1956, La Repubblica) who is both a journalist (La fine dell'impero. Ultimo viaggio in URSS) and a novelist (La donna della Piazza Rossa). However, the texts index also includes a politician, Giulio Andreotti (L’URSS vista da vicino. Dalla guerra fredda a Gorbaciov), and a comic character, Mickey Mouse, who, in an October 1988 issue number, shows how in the years of perestroika people looked at the nascent (dying) country with both fear and curiosity. All the authors, regardless of their profession and orientation, have the feeling that they are also witnessing history through urban geography; it is no coincidence that all the texts analyzed, to varying extents, “photograph” buildings, streets, monuments... that is to say , “places,” which may be “old,” i.e. inherited from previous travelers or the result of historical, political or literary reminiscences, or “new” places, where a new path of history is being written.

    Description: How the Steel Was Tempered in East Asia. Nikolai Ostrovsky’s novel How Steel Was Tempered (1932-34) tells the story of a young Ukrainian man named Pavel Korchagin who sacrifices his life and body to forge a steel-like spirit amid revolution, civil war, and postwar socialist construction. Although his physical injuries, which left him paralyzed and even blind, looks somehow grotesque, but his heroic self-sacrifice also had the power to inspire young readers. Regarded as an exemplary work of Soviet socialist realism, it was translated into many languages and read avidly at one time by left-wing readers in the West as well as in the Communist countries in the East. It was particularly influential in China, where it is so popular that even today it is invariably named as one of the favorite books of university students. This is in contrast to post-Soviet Russia today, in which the novel has lost the privileged position it once enjoyed and is no longer widely read. In China under the socialist regime, Ostrovsky’s novel was published in large numbers as suitable reading for young people and incorporated into school education. However, their active introduction in the public sphere alone does not explain their popularity. Chinese readers seem to have become deeply emotionally involved in the protagonist’s unsuccessful love affair with Tonya, a young girl whose bourgeois gestures and characterization must have been considered negative. As a result, the Soviet ideological novel has brought an unexpected meaning of European-style romantic love for Chinese readers. This presentation will trace the reception of Ostrovsky’s novel and the changes in the heroine Tonya’s image by comparing five adaptations: two Soviet films in 1942 and 1957, a Chinese lianhuanhua (serial picture book) in 1972, a Japanese manga in 1975, and a Chinese TV drama in 1999.

    Description: Vladivostok is likened to the Bosphorus. The remoteness of the Far East made it difficult for the European part of the Russian Empire to recognise Vladivostok geographically. Therefore, through analogy to the Mediterranean, it was consciously integrated into the state. On the other hand, by using kanji combinations, which evoke images of traditional Japanese poetry, the Japanese created a sense of familiarity with Vladivostok. In most cases, regarding the social situation during the Revolutionary and Intervention War periods, researchers’ interest was restricted to the scheme of the conflict between the Red Army and the White Army and the victory or defeat of the October Revolution. However, more than 30 years after the dissolution of the USSR, the events of this period are now being examined by scholars mainly from the perspective of the residents and outsiders in various regions who, without knowing the consequences of the revolution, were both anticipating and anxious about significant social changes. The multicultural nature of the Far East is being discussed on the occasion of the centenary of the Siberian exodus. This article examines the cultural situation in and around Vladivostok, focusing on developments such as the education system and modernist currents in the arts. Vladivostok served as both an entrance to Siberia for the Japanese or other foreign troops and an exit for emigres.

    Description: Reception of Russian Literature of the Silver Age in China. In the late 20th century, there emerged a significant cultural fervor for the Russian literature of the Silver Age within Chinese academic circles, primarily focused on literary studies. This article examines the history of translating Russian literature of the Silver Age in China and its level of research development. It is revealed that, on one hand, the initial attempts at translating literary works of the Silver Age into Chinese began in the first half of the 20th century, with notable activity during the May Fourth Movement and towards the end of the 20th century. Consequently, works by well-known writers had more opportunities to be translated into Chinese and gain attention from the academic community, while many works by lesser-known authors remained overlooked. On the other hand, Chinese scholars’ research on Russian literature of the Silver Age encompasses various literary genres such as poetry, novels, and dramas, with a focus on individual writers and their works. However, comprehensive and systematic studies in this field are still lacking. The examination of the history of translation and the level of research on Russian literature of the Silver Age in China contributes to academic progress, facilitates exchange and collaboration among scholars, provides reference materials and recommendations, and establishes a foundation for further in-depth research.

    Description: The Ukrainian Theme in the Legacy of Vladimir (Ze’ev) Jabotinsky. Vladimir (Ze’ev) Jabotinsky (1880-1940) combined the characteristics of a convinced individualist, a nationalist-statist, and an equally convinced liberal with a tendency toward anarchism. He respected every people’s struggle for independence and called nationalism “the individualism of nations”. In his prose, essays and journalism, Jabotinsky was able to synthesize rational analysis with fearless intuition. This combination enabled him to predict both World Wars I and II and the Holocaust, long before Hitler invaded Poland. As a young man he lived for several years in Italy, which he considered his spiritual homeland. His views were formed, on the one hand, under the influence of Italian socialists, Garibaldi and Italian culture in general, and, on the other hand, under the influence of Ukrainian socialists, champions of independence. He maintained friendly contacts with some of them because he combined his Zionism with Ukrainianophilia, which survived despite the monstrous Jewish pogroms organized by the Petlyura troops in 1919-20. A special theme touched upon in the report is the supposed echoes of Ukrainian spontaneous individualism in Jabotinsky’s anarchist tendencies.

Yet it was precisely the fraught, uncontainable nature of personhood that necessitated its constant legislation, wherein its meaning could be both contested and controlled. Examining scientific and literary narratives, Nihad M. Farooq’s Undisciplined encourages an alternative consideration of personhood, one that emerges from evolutionary and ethnographic discourse. Moving chronologically from 1830 to 1940, Farooq explores the scientific and cultural entanglements of Atlantic travelers in and beyond the Darwin era, and invites us to attend more closely to the consequences of mobility and contact on disciplines and persons. Bringing together an innovative group of readings—from field journals, diaries, letters, and testimonies to novels, stage plays, and audio recordings—Farooq advocates for a reconsideration of science, personhood, and the priority of race for the field of American studies.     Description: Korehito Kurahara and “Proletarian Realism”: Proletarian Literature in Japan in 1920s. This paper examines the proletarian literature movement that emerged in Japan in the 1920s, focusing on Korehito Kurahara, a leading proponent. Kurahara studied Russian literature and his theory, “proletarian realism,” was based on concepts promoted by the Russian Association of Proletarian Writers (RAPP). The paper analyzes two of Kurahara’s works from which proletarian realism originated. Both works are based on arguments between leaders of the proletarian writers’ organization and A. Volonsky. After Kurahara, Japan attempted to interpret proletarian literature from the perspective of literary history, which Kurahara incorporated into Japanese literature based on RAPP discussions. This suggests that Japanese proletarian literary theory developed under the influence of the Soviet Union.

    Description: In my contribution, I analyze texts by Mykola Zerov, Mychajl’ Semenko, and Mykola Chvyl’ovyj, three leading Ukrainian writers of the 1910s and 1920s, that thematize Ukrainian literature of the first years of the twentieth century, criticizing its alleged backwardness and lack of artistic quality. With their rejection of recent tradition, Zerov, Semenko, and Chvyl’ovyj were pursuing an ambitious program of cultural renewal aimed at elevating Ukrainian poetry and prose to the same level as classical and contemporary European literature. A recurrent name in their poems and pieces of criticism is that of Mykola Voronyj, a key figure of early-twentieth-century Ukrainian culture, whose controversial reception sheds light on the extent to which Zerov and Semenko were eager to radically renew Ukrainian literature after its first modernization attempts, which they deemed unsatisfying.

    Description: Part of the American Literatures Initiative Series Neither Fugitive nor Free draws on the freedom suit as recorded in the press and court documents to offer a critically and historically engaged understanding of the freedom celebrated in the literary and cultural histories of transatlantic abolitionism. Freedom suits involved those enslaved valets, nurses, and maids who accompanied slaveholders onto free soil. Once brought into a free jurisdiction, these attendants became informally free, even if they were taken back to a slave jurisdiction—at least according to abolitionists and the enslaved themselves. In order to secure their freedom formally, slave attendants or others on their behalf had to bring suit in a court of law. Edlie Wong critically recuperates these cases in an effort to reexamine and redefine the legal construction of freedom, will, and consent. This study places such historically central anti-slavery figures as Frederick Douglass, Olaudah Equiano, and William Lloyd Garrison alongside such lesser-known slave plaintiffs as Lucy Ann Delaney, Grace, Catharine Linda, Med, and Harriet Robinson Scott. Situated at the confluence of literary criticism, feminism, and legal history, Neither Fugitive nor Free presents the freedom suit as a "new" genre to African American and American literary studies.

    Description: How can we learn to notice the signs of disability? We see indications of disability everywhere: yellow diamond-shaped “deaf person in area” road signs, the telltale shapes of hearing aids, or white-tipped canes sweeping across footpaths. But even though the signs are ubiquitous, Stephanie L. Kerschbaum argues that disability may still not be perceived due to a process she terms “dis-attention.” To tell better stories of disability, this multidisciplinary work turns to rhetoric, communications, sociology, and phenomenology to understand the processes by which the material world becomes sensory input that then passes through perceptual apparatuses to materialize phenomena—including disability. By adding perception to the understanding of disability’s materialization, Kerschbaum significantly expands our understanding of disability, accounting for its fluctuations and transformations in the semiotics of everyday life. Drawing on a set of thirty-three research interviews focused on disabled faculty members’ experiences with disability disclosure, as well as written narratives by disabled people, this book argues for the materiality of narrative, suggesting narratives as a means by which people enact boundaries around phenomena and determine their properties. Signs of Disability offers strategies and practices for challenging problematic and pervasive forms of “dis-attention” and proposes a new theoretical model for understanding disability in social, rhetorical, and material settings.

    Description: Besides its temporal semantics, the imperfect tense can express a wide range of modal meanings, which occur most typically in spoken varieties of language. The paper contrastively explores the modal uses of the imperfect tense in Italian and Bulgarian, a Romance and Slavic language respectively, and shows to what extent they are similar or diverge in the two languages. Although the basic notional configuration of the imperfect tense in Italian and Bulgarian seems to be exactly the same, occurrences of modal meanings are less frequent in Bulgarian than in Italian. Possible explanatory hypotheses suggest that the peculiarities of the tense system (dedicated future-in-the-past form; specific narrative mood), as well as the different syntactic rules governing the sequence of tenses in related sentences, put major constraints on the development of modal meanings of the imperfect tense in Bulgarian.

    Description: Part of the American Literatures Initiative Series In the late nineteenth century, American teachers descended on the Philippines, which had been newly purchased by the U.S. at the end of the Spanish-American War. Motivated by President McKinley’s project of “benevolent assimilation,” they established a school system that centered on English language and American literature to advance the superiority of the Anglo-Saxon tradition, which was held up as justification for the U.S.’s civilizing mission and offered as a promise of moral uplift and political advancement. Meanwhile, on American soil, the field of American literature was just being developed and fundamentally, though invisibly, defined by this new, extraterritorial expansion. Drawing on a wealth of material, including historical records, governmental documents from the War Department and the Bureau of Insular Affairs, curriculum guides, memoirs of American teachers in the Philippines, and 19th century literature, Meg Wesling not only links empire with education, but also demonstrates that the rearticulation of American literary studies through the imperial occupation in the Philippines served to actually define and strengthen the field. Empire’s Proxy boldly argues that the practical and ideological work of colonial dominance figured into the emergence of the field of American literature, and that the consolidation of a canon of American literature was intertwined with the administrative and intellectual tasks of colonial management.

    Description: The volume contains Andrea Trovesi’s linguistic writings, hitherto scattered in various journals and miscellanies, all characterized by a pragmatic approach. The first part collects studies on Slavic vocative conducted from a comparative-historical perspective ranging from Proto-Slavic to modern Slavic languages. These focus in particular on categorical transformations of the vocative, its relics, so-called ‘new vocatives,’ and pragmatic values developed in the various Slavic languages. The second part of the volume is devoted to modal meanings of the imperfect in a Slavic-Romance contrastive framework. The research privileges Bulgarian, but does not neglect the other Slavic languages of which it analyzes interesting residual peripheral aspects of such linguistic usage. Both lines of research presented here stand out for their originality and theoretical value considered from a point of view that leads from Slavic linguistics to the broader perspective of linguistics as a science of language.

    Description: This volume, edited by scholars from diverse backgrounds, stems from the original convergence of various geo-cultural viewpoints on the reception of East Slavic cultures and literatures (Russian, Ukrainian, Belarussian, Soviet): European viewpoints are juxtaposed with those of the Japanese, Chinese, Israeli areas. The volume offers a broad look at the history of the perception of these literatures in Europe, Italy, and East Asia (with special attention to their reception in Japan and China). Contacts, influences, meditations, and difficulties in the perception of literary and cultural phenomena are the subject of original comparative analyses. The vitality with which Slavic-Eastern literatures have found echoes in very distant environments, but also the evolution of the self-perception of Ukrainian literature over time, are among the topics.
