    Description: This book highlights the diverse roles of the humanities in the history of the Swedish welfare society. This society has often been seen as dominated by an instrumental view of knowledge that rewarded the social sciences, natural sciences and technology, but the contributions in this book show the significant role that the humanities played in the Swedish welfare state. Various forms of humanistic knowledge and knowledge actors were part of large networks and left a clear mark on the public sphere and society at large. A narrative of the marginalization and crisis of the humanities in the postwar period must therefore be problematized. This edited volume brings together some twenty scholars from a number of humanities disciplines (history, history of ideas, media history, literary studies, archaeology, education, etc.). Much of the current research on the history of the humanities conducted in Sweden today is brought together here and put in relation to international discussions in fields such as history of humanities, history of knowledge, etc. The book is a sibling to the monograph Humanister i offentligheten, which was published in 2022.

    Description: Avaldsnes on Karmøy in Rogaland, which according to Snorre was King Harald Fairhair's royal estate, has been the center of a major research effort since 2007. Extensive excavations have, among other things, uncovered the remains of a lordly settlement from the AD 200s–400s and the ruins of a royal masonry complex from around AD 1300. Important insights have been gained about the place, the region, and the history of the Norwegian kingdom, and the results are also of significance for international scholarly debates. The papers in this book are based on lectures from the Karmøy Seminar 2022, and have a joint spotlight on the nature of lordship and kingship. The themes range from tribal societies in Roman times via the first kings of the Viking Age to the Norwegian kingdom's collapse at Håkon 6. Magnusson's death in 1380. Prominent professionals from Norway, Sweden and England discuss, among other things, the migrations of Ryger, Goths, and other tribes in the continent in the first centuries AD, the queens and queen mothers of the Viking Age, Harald Fairhair's overseas contacts, and the Norwegian kingship's roots in Nordvegen, the sailing route along the western coast of the Scandinavian Peninsula. The papers are written to be readable by scholars as well as the interested public.
    Description: Avaldsnes på Karmøy i Rogaland, som ifølge Snorre var Harald Hårfagres kongsgård, har siden 2007 vært sentrum for en stor forskningsinnsats. Omfattende utgravninger har blant annet avdekket restene av en høvdinggård fra 200–400-tallet og ruinen av en kongsgård i stein fra omkring 1300. Viktige innsikter er vunnet om stedets, regionens, og det norske kongerikets historie, og resultatene har stor betydning også for internasjonale forskningsspørsmål. Artiklene i denne boken baserer seg på foredrag fra Karmøyseminaret 2022, og har et felles søkelys på høvding- og kongemaktens vesen. Temaene spenner fra romertidens stammesamfunn via vikingtidens første rikskonger til det norske kongedømmets fall ved Håkon 6. Magnussons død i 1380. Fremstående fagfolk fra Norge, Sverige og England diskuterer blant annet rygers, goteres, og andre stammers vandringer på kontinentet i de første århundrer e.Kr., vikingtidens dronninger og kongsmødre, Harald Hårfagres oversjøiske kontakter og det norske kongedømmets utgangspunkt i Nordvegen, seilingsleden langs kysten fra Rogaland til Hålogaland. Artiklene er skrevet for å kunne leses av både leg og lærd. Dagfinn Skre (f. 1954) er professor i arkeologi ved Kulturhistorisk museum, Universitetet i Oslo, og leder Kongsgårdprosjektet Avaldsnes. Han har tidligere blant annet ledet utgravninger av vikingbyen Kaupang i Vestfold. Frans-Arne Stylegar (f. 1969) er arkeolog, tidligere fylkeskonservator i Vest-Agder og direktør for Varanger museum IKS, og arbeider nå som kulturminneekspert i Multiconsult.

    Description: Cultural heritage is not just something from the past, but always also reflects contemporary needs and desires. In the Traces of the Cold War describes the making of a diverse and innovative Swedish military heritage. The book shows how memories and material remains from a period characterized by fear and geopolitical tensions are infused with new meanings when bunkers, decommissioned military facilities and technology are transformed into luxury housing, attractive tourist destinations and museum exhibitions. Through field-visits to military heritage sites across Sweden, the authors examine what material objects, narratives and emotions that today represent the Cold War. These examinations show how military structures and equipment from a time associated with threat and danger become captivating elements of the cultural heritage, while also communicating specific ideas regarding security and protection. In the Traces of the Cold War takes a novel approach to cultural heritage by relating collective memory-making to security policy. Based on theoretical perspectives from critical heritage studies (CHS) and feminist international relations (IR), the analysis focuses on constructions of national belonging and underlines the role of gender and sexuality in narrations of security and protection. In a democracy, the subject of military violence must always be a matter of ethical and political conversations. Setting out from this assumption, the authors critically discuss how Cold War heritagisation produces militarization as “natural” and necessary. The book invites reflection on how history is written as well as on what the requirements are for a safe and secure society. In the Traces of the Cold War presents the results from an interdisciplinary research project. The authors are all researchers at Stockholm University and have written the book together.

    Description: Vanliga uppfattningar i diskussioner om kvinnornas roll under medeltiden är att de utgjorde "brickor i männens politiska spel" eller att de i första hand verkade som förmedlare av makt. I denna antologi studeras dock maktens olika uttrycksformer genom att fokus förflyttas från politisk och ekonomisk maktutövning kontrollerad av män till ett interaktionistiskt synsätt baserat på samspelet och kommunikationen mellan könen. Genom att se på genus som ett totalt socialt fenomen omfattande det medeltida samhällets alla sfärer öppnas möjligheter att undersöka hur makten verkade på olika nivåer inom samhällsstrukturen. Makten betraktas därmed varken som utgående från ett centrum eller helt dominerad av ett kön. I boken diskuterar forskare tillhörande olika discipliner såsom historia, konstvetenskap och litteraturvetenskap hur samverkan mellan könen tog sig uttryck inom kulturen, rättssamhället och den sociala organisationen. Bidragen behandlar inte bara Norden utan även hur könskonstruktioner påverkades och förändrades genom inflytande från samtida kulturella, juridiska och ideologiska strömningar i Europa. *** In discussions relating to their role during the Middle Ages, women are typically assumed to only have been “pawns in a political game dominated by men", or to have primarily acted as intermediaries of power. In this book, however, the varying expressions of power are studied by changing the focus from a political and economic exercise of power controlled by men, to an approach based on interaction and communication between the sexes. In this volume, gender is instead interpreted as a total social phenomenon comprising all spheres of medieval society. This approach provides new opportunities to investigate how power operated on different levels within a societal structure. Thus, power is neither seen as emanating from a centre nor as dominated by only one sex. Instead, it is regarded as an all-embracing societal web, woven through threads of mutual dependence between men and women. In this book, scholars belonging to various disciplines, such as history, history of arts and literary history, discuss how cooperation between the sexes found expression in culture, judicial spheres and social organisation. The contributions do not only consider the Nordic countries, but also how gender constructions were affected by, and transformed through, the influence of contemporary cultural, juridical and ideological currents in Europe.

    Description: O antigo Paço dos arcebispos de Braga ocupa um inequívoco lugar de destaque na paisagem urbana bracarense, cuja complexa história se entrecruza com a da construção do próprio palácio, constituído por um complexo de edifícios que se foram anexando uns aos outros, entre os séculos XIV e XVIII. Situado nas proximidades da Sé Catedral, o Paço arcebispal desenvolve-se por uma vasta área do centro histórico de Braga, sendo reconhecido como um dos edifícios patrimoniais mais emblemáticos da cidade, que tira também partido das características que foram conferidas aos seus espaços envolventes no contexto da intervenção de restauro ocorrida entre 1930 e 1950. Como exemplar complexo de arquitetura civil, o Paço arcebispal conta-nos uma história longa e dinâmica, associada aos protagonistas que ajudaram a dar forma aos edifícios que formalizam o palácio, um indiscutível testemunho do poder e importância que os arcebispos tiveram na história de Braga. O Paço dá também conta da evolução e do pulsar da cidade ao longo de séculos, pois nele encontramos expressões das diferentes tendências artísticas e culturais que se fizeram sentir, um pouco por toda a Europa, entre os finais da Idade Média e os finais do Antigo Regime. Assim, os seus sucessivos acrescentos e fases construtivas representam exemplos paradigmáticos da racionalidade urbanística e das linguagens arquitetónicas características do longo período de progressiva construção dos “paços” que compõem o Paço arcebispal bracarense. A história da sua evolução representa também um excelente testemunho das mudanças ocorridas nas cidades com vocação senhorial, permitindo-nos entender como foram mudando as estratégias de propaganda e de afirmação pública do poder no espaço urbano medieval, renascentista e barroco.

Victor de Sá A Crise do Liberalismo e as primeiras manifestações das ideias socialistas em Portugal (1820-1852) (1ª ed., 1969) é uma obra marcante da historiografia portuguesa dos anos 60, nos termos da sua produção e também, mais ainda, nos termos da sua leitura, no imediato à sua publicação (1ª edição, Seara Nova, 1969), a que se seguiu em 1974 a 2ª edição e em 1978 a 3ª edição. A sua nova edição em tempos de comemorações do Bicentenário da Revolução de 1820 e da evocação dos 100 anos do nascimento de Victor de Sá, é uma oportunidade para sublinhar os horizontes históricos e historiográficos deste trabalho.     Description: This book addresses the evolution of Portuguese-American relations between 1946 and 1961, taking into account the two aspects that conditioned the relationship between the two countries: the North American interest in having the Lajes base in the Azores and the Portuguese government's commitment to secure Washington's support for maintaining its colonial policy. Contrary to what historiography indicated as a “golden period” in the understanding between Lisbon and Washington, the book demonstrates that the Cold War climate and the internationalization of the Portuguese colonial issue conditioned relations between the two countries. Without ever reaching a breaking point, the relationship between the two countries was always constrained by the evident differences in approach regarding the position of the West in relation to the Afro-Asian world, with Portugal linking the American presence in the Azores with the North American need to, if not support, turn a blind eye to the maintenance of Portuguese colonial policy.
    Description: Este livro aborda a evolução das relações luso-americanas entre 1946 e 1961, tendo em atenção os dois aspetos que condicionaram a relação entre os dois países: o interesse norte-americano em dispor da base das Lajes nos Açores e o empenho do governo português em garantir o apoio de Washington para a manutenção da sua política colonial. Ao contrário do que a historiografia apontava como sendo um “período de ouro” no entendimento entre Lisboa e Washington, o livro demonstra que o clima de Guerra Fria e a internacionalização da questão colonial portuguesa condicionaram as relações entre os dois países. Sem nunca chegar a uma situação de rutura, a relação entre os dois países ficou sempre constrangida pelas evidentes diferenças de abordagem quanto à posição do Ocidente em face do mundo afro-asiático, com Portugal a interligar desde muito cedo a presença americana nos Açores com a necessidade norte-americana de, senão apoiar, fechar os olhos à manutenção da política colonial portuguesa.

    Description: Há 50 anos Coimbra viveu uma Crise Académica que abalou fortemente o regime de Salazar/Caetano e pôs em causa a universidade portuguesa Dez dos jovens estudantes bracarenses que nela participaram deixam neste livro o testemunho desse tempo singular que marcou decisivamente as suas vidas. Mas também na sociedade bracarense essa Crise teve reflexos, evidentes na exposição que os pais dos estudantes apresentaram ao Ministério da Educação e na carta com que os “Democratas de Braga” contestam com veemência a ausência de diálogo e a posição repressiva e violenta do Governo, documentos que aqui são integralmente reproduzidos. Ainda nesse âmbito foi amplamente divulgada pela D. G. da Associação Académica de Coimbra uma entrevista que o doutor Victor de Sá então expressamente concedeu sobre o ensino e a investigação histórica em Portugal, comentada pelo Professor Luís Reis Torgal da Universidade de Coimbra, contributos que muito valorizam esta obra. O livro foi organizado por José Viriato Capela e Henrique Barreto Nunes (também autores de textos introdutórios), da Comissão Executiva do Prémio Victor de Sá de História Contemporânea e inclui imagens da Secção Fotográfica da Associação Académica de Coimbra bem como desenhos humorísticos e comunicados então divulgados.     Description: This book deals with the nationalization of the bank sector in the context of the Portuguese revolutionary process of 1974-75. Based on a vast collection of documentary sources and inspired by a set of theoretical tools developed by Mario Tronti, Walter Benjamin and Michel Foucault, it starts with an inescapable interrogation: how could a measure that was not included in the Armed Forces Movement Program and had such considerable implications, both in the short and in the long term, obtained enough support to be included in the Constitution as an irreversible conquest of the working class? The response developed in the following pages establishes an articulation between social conflicts and political economy, identifying it as the centre of gravity of the process that would lead to the nationalization of the bank sector. In this sense, it analyzes the way in which social struggles contributed to a process of cumulative radicalization, initiated at the end of the Estado Novo and which would gain increasing intensity throughout the revolutionary process. At the same time, it seeks to understand why the diagnosis of the economic situation contributed to polarize the political struggle, by mapping the lines of force of a debate that underwent successive declinations and covered different aspects, such as inflation, labour laws or property relations. In a context of economic and revolutionary crisis, the banking sector became a critical point in the capital-labour relation: credit concession would take on decisive importance after 25 April, with labour-unions accusing bankers of pursuing destabilization strategies associated with the practice of "economic sabotage"; in the wake of its nationalization, in turn, government officials, managers and trade-unionists sought to put "the banks at the service of the people", in the context of a brief experience of "socialist transition" that would make its way into the text of the Constitution. The case of the bank sector is therefore a privileged interpretative-key to identify the set of problems and the horizon of possibilities that dominated the historical conjuncture following the 25th of April. This book is a contribution to the maturation of the historiographical field dedicated to the interpretation of the revolutionary process of 1975-75, establishing a critical dialogue with the works that have been produced on the subject over the last years.

Baseado num vasto acervo de fontes documentais e inspirado num conjunto de ferramentas teóricas desenvolvidas por Mario Tronti, Walter Benjamin e Michel Foucault, o seu ponto de partida é uma interrogação incontornável: por que razão uma medida que não constava do Programa do Movimento das Forças Armadas e assumia implicações tão consideráveis, a curto e a longo prazo, obteve um apoio suficientemente alargado para ser inscrita na Constituição da República enquanto uma conquista irreversível da classe trabalhadora? A resposta ensaiada ao longo destas páginas estabelece uma articulação entre conflitos sociais e economia política, identificando-a enquanto o centro de gravidade do processo que conduziria à nacionalização da banca. Nesse sentido, analisa o modo como as lutas sociais contribuíram para um processo de radicalização cumulativa iniciado no final do Estado Novo, que ganharia intensidade crescente ao longo do processo revolucionário. Simultaneamente, tenta compreender por que razão o diagnóstico da situação económica contribuiu para polarizar o combate político, cartografando as linhas de força de um debate que conheceu sucessivas declinações e abrangeu aspetos tão diversos como a inflação, a legislação laboral ou as relações de propriedade. Num contexto de crise económica e revolucionária, o setor bancário converteu-se num ponto crítico da relação entre trabalho e capital: a concessão de crédito assumiria uma importância decisiva após o 25 de Abril, com os sindicatos a atribuir aos banqueiros propósitos de desestabilização associados à prática de "sabotagem económica"; na sequência da nacionalização do setor, por sua vez, governantes, gestores e sindicalistas propuseram-se colocar "a banca ao serviço do povo", no contexto de uma breve experiência de "transição socialista" cujo eco se faria sentir no texto da Constituição da República. O caso da banca revela-se assim uma chave interpretativa privilegiada para identificar o elenco de problemas e o horizonte de possibilidades que dominou a conjuntura histórica a seguir ao 25 de Abril. Este livro propõe-se contribuir para o amadurecimento do campo historiográfico dedicado à interpretação do processo revolucionário de 1975-75, estabelecendo um diálogo crítico com os trabalhos de investigação produzidos acerca do tema ao longo dos últimos anos.

    Description: Today's society is often characterized as a knowledge society, in contrast to the earlier industrial society. Historians however know that all societies are and have been knowledge societies. Without the ability to create, transfer, and use knowledge, between individuals and groups, power areas would neither have been built nor maintained. This edited volume reflects how historical actors, both those in power as well as laymen and officials, have produced and utilised information and knowledge from the Middle Ages until today. It acommodates research into census, urbanisation, history of kings and queens, exercise of public authority, social and political movements, disciplining and formation of opinion. In Kunskapens tider. Historiska perspektiv på kunskapssamhället (”The knowledge society. A historical perspective”) nine researchers from the Department of History at Stockholm University contribute with examples of the need for and use of knowledge, in different historical situations and periods.

    Description: Only in the twentieth century did the (so-called) Portuguese colonial constitution, in the material and formal sense, emerge. Only then the Empire and the Portuguese colonial law, as an exercise of power, were politically theorized. This book addresses that colonial constitution, in force in the eight colonies that, in the Third Portuguese Empire, formed a unique and homogeneous totality. The main issues of the colonial constitution were two: the organization of the colonial power and the status of indigenous people. Regulating domination and submission, the majority of colonial (overseas) law had not the formal or rigidity of constitutional law, but was dispersed in the common legislation, mostly administrative. In the analysis of this colonial constitution, this book reveals four great periods that have succeeded since the First Republic to the Decolonization Act of 1974.

Também só então o Império e o direito colonial português, enquanto exercício de poder, obedeceram a teorização política. Este livro aborda essa constituição colonial, vigente nas oito colónias que, no Terceiro Império português, formavam um todo único e homogéneo. As suas matérias fundamentais eram duas: a organização do poder colonial e o estatuto dos indígenas. Regulando dominação e submissão, larga parte do direito colonial (ultramarino) não tinha carácter formal ou rigidez de lei constitucional, antes estava na legislação ordinária, sobretudo administrativa. Na análise desta constituição colonial, este livro descortina quatro grandes períodos que se sucederam desde a Primeira República à Lei da Descolonização de 1974.

    Description: This book challenges conventional wisdom about bullfighting. With an innovative approach, based on the work of Norbert Elias, the author argues bullfight is the result of the interaction between transformations of society and decisions that aim to create bullfighting rules. In the course of history, bullfighting became civilized, that is, pacified, in the sense that the level of self-control in the conduct and emotions of both bullfighters and public increased. This does not mean that violence has disappeared, but that it has acquired new traits. This historical path, from the 15th century to the present, is reconstructed in these pages by analyzing bullfighting in Portugal through the viewpoint of the regulation of violence, its public exposure and its relationship with the population's patterns of behavior and sensitivity.

Com uma abordagem inovadora, a partir da obra de Norbert Elias, defende que a tourada é o resultado da interação entre as transformações da sociedade e as decisões que visam criar regras sobre a lide do touro. No decurso da história, a corrida de touros civilizou-se, ou seja, pacificou-se, no sentido em que foi aumentando o nível de autocontrolo na conduta e nas emoções quer dos toureiros quer do público.     Description: "This study focuses on two Swedish politicians, Nils Flyg and Sven Olov Lindholm. During the interwar era, they were both leaders of various Swedish political parties; in the case of Flyg the Swedish Communist Party, and later on the Socialist Party; in the case of Lindholm the National Socialist Worker’s Party (later renamed Swedish Socialist Unity). Both men were, in other words, influential politicians located at the outer edges of the ideological landscape. During the span of their lifetimes, however, Flyg as well as Lindholm made remarkable ideological transitions. From the end of the thirties and onwards, the former communist leader Flyg successively embraced German Nazism. Lindholm on the other hand stepped down from his leadership after the war, and became a left-wing political activist who did not hesitate to identify himself as a communist. Superficially, this is strikingly symmetric: The communist leader becomes a Nazi, and the Nazi leader becomes a communist. The aim of the study is to analyze the ideological links and tensions between Nazism and communism using these parallel biographies as a point of entrance. Inspired by political theorist Michael Freeden and his conceptual approach, and using a variety of sources, two core clusters of political concepts are identified and compared. It is shown that there are great similarities between Flyg and Lindholm when it comes to the role of anti-capitalism, anti-imperialism and the aspiration to idealize the Soviet Union or Germany as model states for workers. There are also, however, a number of differences, especially when it comes to views on modernity and materialism. In the final chapter, Flyg and Lindholm are compared to other European renegades. Here, the ambition is to identify common traits in the conversions. It is argued that the ideological antagonisms, the anti-positions, are crucial to this kind of generic renegadism."
