Description: Originally developed by the Canadian sociologist Dorothy E. Smith, institutional ethnography is an approach to research that aims to explore and challenge power relations in society. In Norway and the other Nordic countries, the approach is used by researchers in a variety disciplines and professional fields. In Experiences with Institutional Ethnography, we gain insight into several different researchers’ motivation for, experiences with and reflections on delving into and using institutional ethnography in their own research. We gain insight into specific research processes and their attendant methodological approaches, into experiences of using key concepts from institutional ethnography, and into reflections on the researcher's role. This book will be a useful tool for researchers, master’s students and research fellows who utilize – or are considering utilizing – institutional ethnography in their work.

Description: "How much room to manoeuvre do administrators of municipal social services feel they have in meeting organizational objectives? How much latitude do staff in these services have to utilize their own expertise in performing tasks? What challenges do welfare services face due to cultural diversity? Can new ways of working contribute to increased learning for students in the practice field? These are among the questions addressed in this book, in which challenges associated with maintaining society’s objectives in municipal health, care and child welfare services are focused on. The goal is to provide the reader with insight into degree of latitude pratictioners have when seeking to utilize their own expertise in the context of their job. The book is a collection of ten scholarly articles that, via new empirical studies and theoretical contributions, shed light on manoeuvering room within the practical fulfilment of professional welfare services in the two main municipal healthcare and child welfare organizations. Both services must comply with public regulatory measures in an increasingly more complex field; both are therefore examined in the same anthology. Latitude in Professional Welfare Administration is directed primarily toward students in nursing, child welfare and social education, but may be of interest to students in other health and caregiving fields as well. Employees within municipal health and family services including child welfare services, and politicians involved in development within this sector, will also find this anthology useful. The anthology’s editors are Bente Lilljan Lind Kassah, professor of sociology at UiT The Arctic university of Norway in Harstad; Hilde Nordahl-Pedersen, assistant professor at UiT The Arctic university of Norway in Harstad; and Wivi-Ann Tingvoll, docent emerita at UiT The Arctic university of Norway in Narvik."
Description: "Hvordan opplever ledere handlingsrommet for å ivareta kommunale tjenesters samfunnsoppdrag?

Description: "At the time of this book’s publication, almost seven years have passed since the dramatic and brutal terror attacks at Norway’s Government Headquarters in Oslo and the island of Utøya on 22 July 2011. How have we coped during this time? Which values have been important? Have we managed to protect the ideals of democracy, openness and humanity? And not least: Who is this ""we"" that we are referring to? This scholarly anthology includes articles from researchers associated with the project NECORE (Negotiating Values: Collective Identities and Resilience after 22 July) and other researchers whose work is closely associated with the project. They give us insights, opinions and sharp perspectives on not just 22 July, but also about Norway today, about values, identities and resilience in Norwegian society in the wake of the terror attacks. An important backdrop for the book and the project is the assertion that, as the events themselves recede into the past, it is even more important to focus on what the terror events have led to and how we can learn from them. In a world where terrorism has become an all too common part of political reality, it is crucial that we understand how we ought to think about terror, and how we as a society encounter it."

Description: "We live in a diverse society characterized by different and to some extent contradictory values. Sometimes they create community. Other times they generate value conflicts. In this book, twelve Norwegian researchers write about such value conflicts and the way they occur in working life and the public sphere. Common to many of the contributions of this book is the attempt to highlight so-called value-based community of disagreement. This means that we agree to disagree. As a society, citizens can try to gather around some shared, fundamental values, but we cannot demand that all the members of the society agree on personal values. "

Description: "This anthology examines various ethical issues related to conflicts of interest in research and raises fundamental questions about the role of research in society. In recent years, researchers and others have expressed concern on several occasions about how research has been conducted or used for political or economic gain, where outcomes of research have been called into question and accusations of rigging or poor quality have been leveled. “Conflict of interest” is a term from research ethics that can help clarify what is at the core of many of these cases. Questions posed and explored in this anthology include: What exactly is a conflict of interest within the context of research? Is the ideal of pure, unbiased objectivity even realistic? To what degree can transparency remediate challenges associated with conflicts of interest? The objective with this collection of chapters is to encourage reflection and discourse about the ethical principles and norms that insure quality and integrity in research. The anthology will be of interest to researchers in particular, and all others concerned with ethics in research."
