    Description: Published on the occasion of Hubert Houben’s 70th birthday, this volume focuses on border crossings as one of the topics dear to the jubilarian. By starting from a concept of borders as a social construct, the authors look at selected cases of transcending spatial, cultural and legal boundaries in the Middle Ages. The resulting complexity and multi-perspectivity reflects different research methods and traditions, revealing a broad spectrum of possible approaches to the topic of border crossings.

    Description: Pubblicato in occasione del 70° compleanno di Hubert Houben, questo volume si concentra sull’oltrepassare dei confini come uno dei temi cari al festeggiato. Prendendo come punto di partenza un concetto di confine come costruzione sociale, le autrici e gli autori affrontano casi selezionati di scavalcamento di confini spaziali, culturali e legali durante il Medioevo. La complessità e la multiperspettività che ne derivano riflettono metodi e tradizioni di ricerca diversi, che insieme rivelano un ampio spettro di approcci possibili al tema dell’attraversamento dei confini.

    Description: The Low Countries in the early Middle Ages. Christianity is on the rise, partly due to the efforts of missionaries such as Willibrord and Boniface. Yet the process of Christianisation is laborious. This is well illustrated in Vita Radbodi, a tenth-century Latin biography of bishop Radboud of Utrecht (c. 850-917). In it, Radboud is depicted as a pious, serious and studious young man, who is called to the episcopate after many years of study. As bishop, he encounters problems with unbelieving Frisians and ferocious Normans. Thus, he is forced to move his seat from Utrecht to the safer Deventer. The text offers a positive portrait of Radboud as a holy role model figure. He acts energetically, performs miracles and, of course, also possesses prophetic gifts. For instance, he predicts his own end well in time. The text ends with a vision of the Mother of God and Radboud's death and burial. Some twenty years after the first edition by Peter Nissen and Vincent Hunink, the text is now being reissued on the occasion of Radboud University's centenary.

    Description: The 7-8th centuries are commonly believed tohave beena stagnant phase of Byzantine historiography. This book investigates the writing of history in Greek and Syriacduring this period through the study of four later chronicles which used lost 7-8th-century sources. The materials shared by these texts shed light on the sources themselves and on the practice of "memory keeping" among Christians in such a crucial age.

    Description: This work provides an in-depth description of the juridical framework in which the Italian book trade operated during the Renaissance. It is a multi-authored work that discusses issues related to intellectual, literary and artistic proto-property by taking into account some of the main urban centers of pre-unitary Italy such as Venice, Milan and Rome. It investigates the different legal systems put in place by the states and the dynamics that generated around them. The volume frames the topic at task within the general discourse on technologic innovation and state patronage in economic history hence exploring patenting systems (e.g., Florence and Venice) along with book privilege systems (e.g., Milan and Venice). In so doing it also investigates instances of conflicting interests occuring between the political and the economic sphere (e.g., Rome and Venice).

    Description: This volume is devoted to one of the major aristocratic lineages of northern Italy in the later middle ages. The Rossi, whose political and social eminence dates back to the communal age, built in the Parmense a powerful lordship, based both on their estates and fortresses and on a vast patronage network spread over the territory and in the town: and the power of the family, though diminished after the crisis in the relations with the Sforza in 1482, was restored on partially different foundations during the Italian Wars. The essays collected in this book explore the complexity of the Rossi "little seignorial state", focusing on its internal constitution, on its exterior relations and on its artistic and cultural features between the mid-fourteenth and the early sixteenth century.

I Rossi, la cui eminenza sociale e politica risale all'età comunale, costruirono nel Parmense un dominio di notevoli proporzioni, basato sul possesso territoriale e castrense ma anche su una vasta clientela rurale e urbana: e il potere del casato, benché ridimensionato in seguito alla crisi delle relazioni con gli Sforza nel 1482, trovò gli spazi per ricostituirsi su basi parzialmente diverse durante le guerre d'Italia.     Description: On the eve of the fall of the Wall, the European Community is a mature and evolving reality, already able to compete commercially with the United States and grappling with the complex design of the great Single market. At the same time, it has developed political ambitions, with the first forms of foreign policy coordination between Member States, and the start of the long road towards Economic and Monetary Union. Lorenzo Natali (1922-1989) is one of the least known protagonists of this story. Since the birth of the Communities with the Treaties of Rome, and in the following thirty years he accompanied with his political career the fundamental steps of European construction, first as a minister and, from the late Seventies, as Italian commissioner in Brussels, the longest in terms of term of office. He and the Directorates-General he leads are responsible for some of the most significant achievements of that political season, from the conclusion of the great enlargement to the South to the implementation of the Community's first environmental policy, ending to the consolidation of a fruitful and equal dialogue between Europe and the global South. This book aims to give a first glimpse of light on his figure and his political action.

Ha al contempo sviluppato ambizioni di natura politica, con le prime forme di coordinamento della politica estera tra Stati membri, e l’avvio del lungo percorso verso l’Unione economica e monetaria. Lorenzo Natali (1922-1989) è un protagonista tra i meno conosciuti di questa storia. Presente sin dall’atto di nascita delle Comunità, nei trent’anni seguenti accompagna con il suo percorso politico i passaggi fondamentali della costruzione europea, dapprima come ministro e dai tardi anni Settanta come commissario italiano a Bruxelles, il più longevo per durata d’incarico. A lui si devono in particolare alcuni dei traguardi più importanti di quella stagione, dalla realizzazione del grande allargamento a Sud all’implementazione della prima politica ambientale della Ce, fino al consolidamento di un dialogo paritario allacciato tra l’Europa e il Sud globale. Questo libro intende restituire un primo squarcio di luce sulla sua figura e la sua azione politica

    Description: The volume, which has emerged from an international conference of the same title, unites a range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary contributions on invasions of Goths and other Germanic tribes into the Roman Empire, focusing primarily on the third-century CE. The newly discovered fragments of the lost work Scythica by the third-century historian Dexippus of Athens, the so-called Scythica Vindobonensia alias Dexippus Vindobonensis, which survived in a Greek palimpsest kept in the Austrian National Library in Vienna, have great impact on the study of this field. The contributions explore the Vienna fragments in their historical and historiographical contexts, from the Roman to the Byzantine Era, and the history of the invasions themselves.

    Description: The volume Contro Bernardino. Processi al maestro Amedeo Landi is the result of the discovery of unpublished documentation on the trials - only partly known - against the abacus master Amedeo Landi, who taught the Milanese merchants at the Broletto. This is an exceptional case not only because only one witness to the activity of the Milanese inquisitorial court in the Middle Ages (whose documentation has been entirely lost) was known until now, but also because of the role of the ecclesiastical court and its officials. The wealth of information and themes has prompted a team effort by the professors of the Department of Historical Studies to clarify the many aspects (political, religious, economic, documentary) of an event that shows the vitality of 15th-century Milan, in which the protagonist, the teacher Amedeo Landi, in an attempt to protect his students, clashes with the most important preacher of his time, Brother Bernardino of Siena, whose canonisation process is temporarily blocked precisely to shed light on the Milanese episode.

Processi al maestro Amedeo Landi nasce dal ritrovamento di documentazione inedita riguardo ai processi – solo in parte noti – contro il maestro d’abaco Amedeo Landi che insegnava ai mercanti milanesi presso il Broletto. Si tratta di un caso eccezionale non solo perché finora si conosceva un solo testimone dell’attività del tribunale inquisitoriale milanese nel medioevo (la cui documentazione è andata interamente perduta), ma anche per il ruolo del tribunale ecclesiastico e dei suoi funzionari. La ricchezza delle informazioni e dei temi ha suggerito un lavoro d’équipe dei docenti del Dipartimento di studi storici per chiarire i molteplici aspetti (politici, religiosi, economici, documentari) di una vicenda che mostra la vitalità della Milano quattrocentesca, in cui il protagonista, il maestro Amedeo Landi, nel tentativo di tutelare i suoi studenti si scontra con il più importante predicatore del suo tempo, frate Bernardino da Siena, il cui processo di canonizzazione viene momentaneamente bloccato proprio per fare luce sull’episodio milanese.

    Description: The art of printing with movable type made its appearance in Perugia -then as now, the heart of Italy- in 1471, when the city was under the sway of Braccio Baglioni. Perugia was home to an important university which had been attracting students from all over Europe for more than a century. They found hospitality in two colleges, of which the ‘Sapienza Vecchia’, in particular, was accustomed to accommodating students from abroad. The colleges were themselves instrumental in assisting the work of the earliest printers, all of them foreigners; their enterprise flourished for about fifteen years before strong competition from larger printing centres, notably Venice, took control of the Perugian book market. A second phase in local book production started at the turn of the century under the aegis of two major players, the Cartolari family and Bianchino dal Leone. The history of the book in Perugia is characterized by a quality and originality which is not reflected in the modest quantities produced there, and the major bibliographers have always taken an interest in it. All that and more can be found in this book, the outcome of lengthy research based on detailed analysis of all known editions and archival documents, including a number of new discoveries.
