Description: Online social media platforms set the agenda and structure for public and private communication in our age. Their influence and power is beyond any traditional media empire. Their legal regulation is a pressing challenge, but currently, they are mainly governed by economic pressures. There are now diverse legislative attempts to regulate platforms in various parts of the world. The European Union and most of its Member States have historically relied on soft law, but are now looking to introduce regulation. Leading researchers of the field analyse the hard questions and the responses given by various states. The book offers legislative solutions from various parts of the world, compares regulatory concepts and assesses the use of algorithms. Description: Cybersecurity is a central challenge for many companies. On the one hand, companies have to protect themselves against cyberattacks; on the other hand, they have special obligations towards third parties and the state in critical infrastructures or when dealing with personal data. These responsibilities converge with company management. This volume examines the duties and liability risks of management in connection with cyber security from the perspective of corporate, constitutional and labour law. The volume is based on a conference of the same name, which took place in cooperation with the Friedrich Naumann Stiftung für die Freiheit on 23 and 24 October 2020 at Bucerius Law School in Hamburg. With contributions by Andreas Beyer, Marc Bittner, Alexander Brüggemeier, Anabel Guntermann, Katrin Haußmann, Dennis-Kenji Kipker, Christoph Benedikt Müller, Isabella Risini, Darius Rostam, Sarah Schmidt-Versteyl and Gerald Spindler.

Description: This study is the first to analyse the manifold interrelations between armed conflicts and the human and natural environments both historically and sociologically. While most research to date has dealt with this topic primarily with regard to environmental destruction caused by acts of war or armament in peacetime, this publication goes one step further by highlighting the historical changes to this complex interrelationship with concrete examples: from the Second World War in Europe and Asia via the classic proxy war in Vietnam to the current asymmetric wars in South Asia. At the same time, it focuses on systematic questions: How do environments influence armed conflicts? How do wars change environments? And how do complete ‘war landscapes’ (warscapes) emerge, in which war and militarisation permanently change the relations between people and their environment? With contributions by: Detlef Briesen, Anthony Goreau-Ponceaud, David Pickus, Sarada Prasanna Das, Nguyen Thi Hanh, Nguyen Thi Thuy Hang, Dao Duc Thuan/Nguyen Van Ngoc, Tim Kaiser, Dam Thi Phuong Thuy/Nguyen Van Bac, Brigitte Sébastia, Manish Tiwari, Babu Rangaiah/Kumaresan Raja, Martin Dinges.

Description: Asylum and refugees in Europe – who can fix a broken system? In times of increasing waves of migration, collective bodies and their cooperation networks are of particular importance to the European asylum system. But who are those actors and what is their contribution to effecting a change in the situation of those seeking refuge in Europe? While the Common European Asylum System introduced standardised regulations for all EU-member states, the real situation in each country differs greatly from those official declarations, even leading to a humanitarian crisis at times. Using the theory of neo-institutionalism, current data from expert interviews, and website and document analyses from Italy, Spain, Greece, Cyprus, Malta and Germany, this study answers those questions. It illustrates how and if this gap between talk and action can be narrowed, how asylum-related organisations and their networks function and how far they contribute to this process. Description: Popular uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) have had a deep impact, not only on the societies and political structures in the respective countries there, but also on different academic disciplines. The events that started in 2010 in Tunisia have altered academic terminology, contributed to a shift in study focus and sometimes challenged dominant theoretical approaches. The book provides an insightful and illuminating view of the transformation of the academic landscape in the aftermath of these uprisings. It analyses how the academic discourse in and on the MENA region has changed and reflects on how the aforementioned transformation processes, which are still ongoing, are shaping lines of inquiry in different disciplines, including political science, Arabic literature and language studies, philosophy, communication studies, sociology, computer studies and archaeology. The book’s authors are members of the Arab-German Young Academy of Sciences and Humanities (AGYA). With contributions by Ammar Abdulrahman, Tobias Amft, Hanan Badr, Sarhan Dhouib, Kalman Graffi, Amal Grami, Maha Houssami, Christian Junge, Fatima Kastner, Florian Kohstall, Bilal Orfali, Carola Richter, Hans Jörg Sandkühler, Rana Siblini, Jan Claudius Völkel, Barbara Winckler

Description: Not so long ago, the only respectable question for philosophical, legal, and political scholars to ask about torture was how to ensure its effective legal prohibition. Recently, however, some leading lawyers and legal theorists have challenged those who are absolutely opposed to torture, arguing that, in some circumstances, torture may be morally permissible or even required. This has provoked a range of responses, from outraged dismissal to cautious concessions that the law has to adjust to new realities. This volume contains writings by some of the leading contributors to these debates. Distinctively, it supplements the discussion about the morality of torture - and the morality of discussing torture - with essays which provide important legal, sociological, and historical analyses of this appalling human practice and of the attempts to control it. With an international and interdisciplinary authorship, Torture: Moral Absolutes and Ambiguities will be essential reading for legal and political theorists, philosophers, sociologists, historians, and indeed anybody interested in serious and informed thinking about this most disturbing phenomenon.

Description: This volume assembles contributions from different academic perspectives (religious and Islamic studies, literary and theatre studies, theology, sociology and history) on modern manifestations of martyrdom in the diverse Middle Eastern religious traditions, including Islam, Christianity, Judaism and the Baha'i-faith. The latter is considered in more detail since it is often not included in comparative studies on the monotheistic religions. An excursus into the farer East composes the contribution on Mahatma Ghandi. The volume considers central sociological, philosophical and theological problems which lie at the heart of the phenomenon of martyrdom, the significance of martyrdom in different conflicts, the competing martyr figures which develop in the course of these conflicts as well as the accompanying representations in art and ritual. Special attention is directed to the transitions of traditional forms of martyr representation and the emergence of a global discourse on martyrdom, which can be noticed both in the dissemination of martyr practices as in the reactions to certain martyr events on a global scale.

Abstract Suddenly a new virus has appeared which is threatening society. Fragility, illness and death have become fundamental topics in daily life and social distancing a new form of solidarity. In this unexpected transformation, digital media is playing a crucial role in conveying information about a public sphere that is no longer easily accessible. These changes have also influenced religious communities and their rituals. Through a broad range of selected case studies, this book addresses the complex relationship between religion and the media during the pandemic. On the one hand, it explores processes of (digitally) adapting rituals and messages; on the other hand, it highlights the ambiguous role of religious semantics and practices in addressing the crisis. With contributions by Verena Marie Eberhardt, Matthias Eder, Paulina Epischin, Hannah Griese, Anna-Katharina Höpflinger, Florian Kronawitter, Yifan Li, Michael Maderer, Katharina Luise Merkert, Jochen Mündlein, Guido Murillo, Caterina Panunzio and Daria Pezzoli-Olgiati.
