Description: On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the University of Hamburg's main building, a ceremony was held on May 13th, 2011. The keynote speaker was Heinz-Elmar Tenorth, Professor of Historical Education in Berlin. Heinz Rieter and Rainer Nicolaysen awarded two lecture hall names, the socio-economic economist Eduard Heimann (1889-1967)(Lecture Hall H) and the lawyer Albrecht Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1874-1936) (Lecture Hall K). Thus, the programme for naming the seven lecture halls of the University's main building after outstanding scientists who were expelled from the Nazi regime came to an end.Detailed information on all names of the lecture hall can be found in the anthology 〈a href="http://hup.sub.uni-hamburg.de/purl/HamburgUP_Nicolaysen_Hauptgebaeude"〉The main building of the University of Hamburg as a place of remembrance〈/a〉, which was published on the occasion of the anniversary.

Description: The story of how Max Warburg became head of the family-owned bankhouse, although his brother was supposed to take over the business, was often told: When he was 12 years old, the one year older Aby offered Max his birthright for the promise to buy all the books Aby would ever need. Max accepted, and - as he later said - issued "the biggest blank cheque in my life". The paths of life of the two brothers spilt into different directions. Aby built his library into a research institute. Max developed M. M. Warburg & Co., thus the bankhouse becoming one of the most important private banks in Germany. At Simultaneously, they both pursued another goal: the foundation of the university. The brothers were among the early donors of the Hamburg Scientific Foundation (Hamburgische Wissenschaftliche Stiftung). It was all about "Hamburg's mental capacity" ("Hamburgs geistige Zahlungsfähigkeit").

Description: The workshop documentation was developed as part of the inter-university project "Participatory development of indicators of sustainability. A contribution to a process-oriented sustainability strategy ". It was carried out at the beginning of March 2000 to April 2001 by scientists from the University of Hamburg, the Hamburg University of Economics and Politics (Hochschule für Wirtschaft und Politik, HWP), the University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg (Universität der Bundeswehr) and the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy (Wuppertal Institut für Klima, Umwelt, Energie). The workshop documented here took place on March 23, 2001 at the University of the German Armed Forces. The project team presented its work results to an audience from science and practice for discussion. Participants included representatives from companies, government departments at state and municipal level, educational institutions, consulting companies, statistical offices and associations, universities and research institutions from social, engineering and natural sciences disciplines. They came from Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony and Baden-Württemberg. The documentation contains the lectures of four project participants, in which central results of the project are presented, and corrections by external scientists and experts. A summary of the discussion follows.

Description: Like no other novel, the "Don Quixote" by Miguel de Cervantes has fascinated readers time and again for four centuries. Written in Spain in the early 17th century, which at that time played a major role in shaping the destiny of Europe, the novel soon became the epitome of Spanish literature and culture. From Madrid he started affecting the rest of Europe and inspired thinkers, poets, artists, composers and later also filmmakers. The volume's eight contributions explore central aspects of the Cervantine novel and explore its reception and processing in literature, art, film and music in the European context.

Description: Hydrodynamics was long considered a subject for mathematicians and theoretical physicists. Although the engineering subject of hydraulics offers useful formulae for many practical problems, these could only be justified empirically. In the winter semester of 1907/08, the mathematician Felix Klein organised a seminar at Göttingen University with the declared aim of bridging this gap. The participants' contributions show how the gap between theoretical hydrodynamics and practical hydraulics was bridged with modern fluid mechanics.

Description: Despite the current need for reliable and valid test instruments to monitor the sign language acquisition of Deaf children in different countries, very few tests offering strong evidence for their psychometric properties are commercially available. A German Sign Language (DGS) test that focuses on linguistic structures acquired in preschool- and school-aged children (4-8 years old) is urgently needed. The present study uses as a template a test which has sound psychometric properties and has been standardized on another sign language as a starting point for tests of sign languages that are less documented, such as DGS.This book makes a novel contribution to the field by examining linguistic, cultural, methodological, and theoretical issues in the process of the adaptation from the source language test to the target language test, and by providing a model for future test adaptations. It also includes concrete steps for the test development and adaptation process.Adaptation and Evaluation of a German Sign Language Test addresses students and researchers alike who are involved in sign language test development and adaptation. It also provides a comprehensive summary in German.

Description: The Generalsuperintendent" supervised the church, school and poor people. He had a seat and a voice in the "Oberkonsistorium" (Upper Consistory) as well as in the "Landoberkonsistorium " (Country Upper Consistory) which was responsible for the noble as well as the monastic areas. Since 1636 the name "Generalsuperintendent" was in use. The royal and the Gottorf general superintendents were each responsible for the shares of their sovereigns in both dukedoms, Schleswig and Holstein. The unification of the royal and Gottorf districts in Schleswig in 1720 led to the fact that the supervision of the royal "Generalsuperintendent" extended once and for all over the entire duchy of Schleswig. From 1784 onwards, the duchy of Holstein was united under the royal "Generalsuperintendent". In 1834, the office was divided into one area of responsibility for Schleswig and one for Holstein. With the introduction of the Schleswig-Holstein church constitution in 1922, the office "Generalsuperintendent" was abolished and replaced by the regional bishop. This find book is based on a re-listing of the holdings of the archives of the General Superintendentury in 2011: denotation and duration of all archive records have been reviewed. Extensive and difficult to understand file denotations have been replaced by shorter and more modern ones. Older terms have been retained as long as they represent common search terms. Extensive files divided and new numbers created. In addition, the archive records were given new numbering. A concordance at the end of the find book shows under which new signatures the old numbers can be found. A register of places, subjects and persons forms the conclusion of this find book. As a rule, classification terms are not included."

Description: The reference point for this publication is the concept of the "coastal image" which is represented from different professional perspectives by their representatives. The aim of the volume is not a synthesis of different positions, but rather to identify divergences and convergences that could trigger the technical discussion. The pluralism of perspectives on the "coastal image" in the individual scientific disciplines and practice areas presented in this volume is therefore deliberate and represents interdisciplinary views, approaches and concepts for accessing the "coastal image".

Description: As Hamburg merchants, the Lipperts have successfully traded with South Africa since the 1850s. As donators they have earned their living in their hometown for decades. The family's ancestor, David Lippert, came to Hamburg from Mecklenburg in the early 1830s. His marriage gave him access to the upper class - and a widely ramified family: The Hahns, the Robinows and the 〈a href="https://dx.doi.org/10.15460/HUP.MFW.9en.127"〉Beits〈/a〉 belonged to the next of kin, later also the Zacharias, Wibel, Bunsen, Bülau and Wentzel families. The focus of this publication is the life of three sons of David Lippert: the brothers Ludwig Julius (1835-1918), Wilhelm August (1845-1918) and Eduard Amandus (1844-1925). Ludwig belonged to the founding generation of the diamond industry in South Africa - and was one of the initiators of the Bismarck Monument at the Millerntor. William became consul in Cape Town just at the time when the Empire acquired "Deutsch-Südwest" ("German Southwest"), the first German colony. Eduard became an opponent of the British imperialist Cecil Rhodes in the Transvaal as a friend of President Paul Kruger. In Hamburg he was known as a patron of the observatory. The life of the three brothers as art collectors, founders, builders, landowners, rich in battles, blows of fate, defeats and victories is described for the first time in this dedicated publication of the series Mäzene für Wissenschaft of the Hamburgische Wissenschaftliche Stiftung.

Description: The Landesarchiv Schleswig-Holstein Schleswig-Holstein is situated in the Prinzenpalais in Schleswig. The Archive is a safe place for the permanent storage of historical and personal historical sources. It also embodies the "public memory" of the northernmost state: with its approximately 10,000 records, 90,000 maps and 38,000 meters of documents, it is the place where major written sources have been permanently secured since the 11th century. The earliest document dates back to 1059. All this makes the Landesarchiv Schleswig-Holstein Schleswig-Holstein a centre of historical, home and family research. Moreover, the preservation of legally binding documents ensures legal certainty for citizens as well as the continuity of the administrative action. The Landesarchiv provides numerous services for Schleswig-Holstein administration, for example investigations for legal or historical purposes, the submission of files or the preparation of expert opinions. The present work of Roland Lucht explores the Landesarchiv from an an archival perspective. This is a completely revised edition.

Description: From February 5th till 7th, 2015, the "Conference on Scientific Cooperation between Greece and Germany" took place at the University of Hamburg. About 100 scientists from Greece and Germany invited by the President of the University, Dieter Lenzen, took part in the project, discussing the current crisis in Greece which also dramatically affects scholarship there and whose effects are now a fundamental threat to the functioning of the Greek university system. This volume documents the German version of the English-language welcome speech of the President of the University in which he emphasizes the urgency of joint action as well as the opening speech by the President of the European Court of Justice Vassilios Skouris in German. Skouris describes the specifics of the scientific relations between Greece and Germany in both historical and contemporary terms.

Description: Rarely is the collecting of prints in libraries looked at more closely, although this was still intensively cultivated in the 19th century, especially in Hamburg's active bourgeois culture. Once again, it becomes apparent that trade and artistic sensibility certainly went hand in hand in the Hanseatic city. Studying the copperplate engravings in the Hamburg State and University Library has brought to light a variety of traces that point to the provenances of the original owners and to the way the library dealt with them. They have been examined in detail and with dedicated research work by a group of art history students and presented in this book in a scientifically sound manner with new perspectives. In addition to the ramified history of the collection, the book also aims to draw attention to the works themselves, which are now digitally recorded and thus accessible. The publication combines both historical-critical library and collection history as well as an examination of modern instruments for making them available.

Description: After the change of power in Hamburg on March 8, 1933, the school administration was put under command of Karl Witt, a German nationalist and later Nazi. Converted to the National Socialist leadership principle, it was increasingly instrumentalized for the implementation of National Socialist educational concepts. These were mainly enforced by the persons who led the authority or dominated by informal power. The position of the four school-related officials in the power and governance system of National Socialism in Hamburg is therefore explained in this publication. Besides Karl Witt, three men were the protegés of the so-calld "Gauleiter" and "Reichsstatthalter" Karl Kaufmann: namely Wilhelm Schulz, Albert Henze, and Ernst Schrewe. Their proximity to the centre of power around Kaufmann led to very different formal and informal anchors in the mechanisms of the polycratic National Socialist system. The political pressure exerted by the head of the school administration on the schools intensified since the beginning of the war, culminating in the power and ruthless exercise of power by the National Socialist "Senatsdirektor" and "Gauschulungsleiter" Albert Henze.

Description: As a creative entrepreneur, Edmund Siemers was one of the pioneers of petroleum trading in Germany. Later he succeeded as importer of Chilean nitre and built up his own fleet of ships. Finally he became a builder and landowner in the north of Hamburg. However, Edmund Siemers became really famous for his two large foundations: in 1896 Edmundsthal-Siemerswalde in Geesthacht, one of the first pulmonary treatment centres in Germany, and in 1907 the lecture building on the Moorweide, still a symbol of "the University" in Hamburg.Edmund Siemers' life is equally linked to the Hamburg, German and Transatlantic economic history of the 19th and early 20th centuries. He embodies a donor from Hamburg's upper middle classes in an ideal-typical manner. This is the first biography of "Hamburg's Carnegie", who also appeared as a donor and member of the board of trustees of the Hamburg Scientific Foundation.

Description: The present study deals with the foreign policy of the Western Roman Empire towards those Germanic tribes that were able to form sovereign states on Roman soil in connection with the fall of Western Rome: the Burgundians, the Vandals, the Suebi and the Visigoths. The central object of investigation is the international legal relations between the Empire and the various gentes in the 5th century. A collection of the West Roman-Germanic treaties - together with a presentation of their historical background - provides a sufficient overview of the political attitude of the Western Empire towards the Germanic peoples in the final phase of its disintegration process. Is there a certain "red thread" in West Rome's foreign policy?

Description: The archival material documented in these finding books originates from the Ministry of the Duchies of Holstein and Lauenburg in Copenhagen and from the Holstein Government in Copenhagen and Plön in the years 1862-1864 and 1862-1864. The Ministry for the Duchies of Holstein and Lauenburg was established by the Danish King on January 27, 1852 with its seat in Copenhagen. In November 1862 the Royal Holstein Government was established, initially in Copenhagen and later in Plön. This authority was supervised and managed by the Ministry and took over most of its tasks relating to Holstein. With the political events of 1864 and the assumption of the administration of the dukedoms by the Prussian-Austrian authorities, the Ministry and the Royal Holstein Government ceased their activities. The holdings of Dept. (Abt.) 80 comprise a total of 303 running metres of archival material, while Dept. (Abt.) 56 comprises a total of 18 running metres. For reasons of the history of the authorities, section 56 of this booklet is located behind section 80 of the stock, and a common register of places, subjects and persons for both sections forms the conclusion of this booklet. For the search for a topic or a term, the subject classification should be used first and then the index as a supplement. It should be noted that the terms for the indexes come from the file titles, i. e. not all entries in the files themselves.

Description: Over the past decade, efforts been have intensified to establish a viable location for modern biotechnologies in the Hamburg region. The growing intensity of Hamburg's biotechnological support can be seen as a reflection on the drastic slump of newly founded biotechnology companies that took place in previous years. Numerous companies disappeared from the scene after a short period of time despite good concepts and good technologies. Against this background the lecture series "Strategies of Biotechnological Innovation" was held in the winter semester 2004/2005 at the Research Center for Biotechnology, Society and Environment (BIOGUM) of the University of Hamburg. Its aim was to examine the possibilities, problems and limitations of innovation management from different perspectives. The texts of this volume are based on lectures given by the contributors in the context of this lecture series.

Description: On October 13, 2000 the historian Peter Borowsky, a "pupil" of Fritz Fischer, died at the age of 62. He has worked at the University of Hamburg for almost four decades: as a student, research assistant, senior scientific officer and private lecturer for modern and contemporary history. In 1996, he was awarded the title of "Professor"; however, he was denied a professorship. As an author of high-circulation historical works, Peter Borowsky reached a large audience. Written jointly with Barbara Vogel and Heide Wunder, the introduction to history first published in 1975 is still a scientific "best-seller"to this day; Borowsky's Hitler biography for young people and his overview of German history after 1945 also experienced numerous editions. However, the focus of his work was on academic teaching, in which he achieved outstanding results. Generations of history students were taught, supervised and shaped by him - at the University of Hamburg as well as at Smith College, Northampton/Massachusetts, where the scholar has regularly held a visiting professorship since 1974. The partnership between these two universities was embodied by Peter Borowsky. The academic commemoration ceremonies in his honour - in February 2001 at the University of Hamburg and the following month at Smith College - conveyed a moving impression. A selection of the speeches given there and previously at the funeral service at the Nienstedten cemetery is summarized in this booklet. At the same time, an extensive commemorative volume was published on June 3, 2003, the 65th anniversary of Peter Borowsky's birth, the title "Lebendige Sozialgeschichte. Borowskys Forschungsfelder" (Living Social History. Borowskys Research Fields) is intended to emphasize the content and methodology of Borowsky's work and at the same time to accentuate his special way of conveying history.

Description: Ernst Friedrich Sieveking is one of the outstanding personalities in Hamburg's history. He showed special talents at an early age, so that he was already a fully trained lawyer at the age of 21. He then joined a renowned law firm which he managed successfully for many years on his own. In 1879 Sieveking was appointed the first president of the newly founded Hanseatic Higher Regional Court in 1879. Until his death, for thirty years, he remained president of the Court of First Instance, which earned him a high reputation as an expert on maritime law. In addition, he was actively involved in the founding of Hamburg University, which is why he was also a member of the first board of trustees of the Hamburg Scientific Foundation. Surrounded by three representative buildings, the Sievekingplatz in Hamburg still reminds us of him to this day.

Description: "New York's most valuable vitizen" - this honorary title was given to Adolph Lewisohn. When he was born in Hamburg in 1849 as the son of Orthodox Jews and successful merchants, a career as a merchant was put in his cradle. In search of personal freedom he persuaded his strict father in 1867 to let him go to New York. The fact that Lewisohn, as an industrialist in the USA, will generate millions of euros in only twenty years' time would have seemed like a fairy tale to the young migrant. With dedication, foresight and flexibility he builds a copper empire. For four decades he then supports countless charitable projects with millions of euros. The Hamburgische Wissenschaftliche Stiftung (Hamburg Scientific Society) also owes him one of the biggest donations it received when it was founded. This is the first biography of this exceptionally successful businessman, art collector and international philanthropist.

Description: Since 1648 and 1713, the government chancellery in Glückstadt for Holstein and the higher court in Gottorf for Schleswig formed the highest sovereign authorities in the duchies below the central administrative bodies in Copenhagen. In 1834 the separation of the justicial and the administrative authority took place at the middle level. A new administrative authority was established under the name "Schleswig-Holstein Government" (also known as Provincial government). When it was set up, the Schleswig-Holstein government took over parts of the Governorship's archives, as well as the majority of the administrative acts of the Gottorf Higher Court and the government chancellery in Glückstadt. The government left most of this writing untouched; only a small part of it was being continued. In order to facilitate the use of the important and thematically rich Dept. (Abt.) 49, the collection was completely reviewed in 2012/2013 and included in the archive database "AIDA". In this process, the information on the old means of finding the titles and terms of all archival material in the stock was checked.

Description: Digital storage of information is becoming increasingly important in public and private administration. Archives must therefore participate at an early stage in the implementation of content management systems in order to be able to pass on historically valuable digital documents to future generations in an authentic form. The eighth conference of the working group "Archiving of documents from digital systems" was organised by the Hamburg State Archives on 27 and 28 April 2004 under the title "Digital administration - digital archiving". It includes archivists from state and municipal archives, business and church archives in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The archival handling of digital documents, the preservation of authenticity and the long-term storage of electronic signatures are the defining themes of the 16 contributions documented in this volume.

Description: Julius Carl Ertel held a special position as director and later as sole owner of a copper smelter in the commercial and trading city of Hamburg. Born in Wroclaw, he came to the Hanseatic city at the age of 26. Together with Rudolph Bieber, he founded Ertel, Bieber & Co. in 1872. The company had its facilities in the middle of the harbour area. However, Ertel gained its decisive importance through the extensive connections he made with numerous other companies throughout Germany. In the supervisory boards of these companies, he played an active role in building up the expanding economy of the Gründerzeit. Ertel was not a man who pushed himself into the foreground. Description: The German Chancery - since 1806 the Schleswig-Holstein Chancery, from 1816 on the Schleswig-Holstein-Lauenburg Chancery - developed from the early 16th century, and acquired fixed institutional forms in the 17th century. Its territorial jurisdiction initially extended to the royal portions, from 1773 to the entire Duchies of Schleswig and Holstein, and from 1816 additionally to the Duchy of Lauenburg. From 1667 to 1773, the counties of Oldenburg and Delmenhorst were also part of the Chancellery's portfolio. As the highest and most important royal authority for the duchies with its seat in Copenhagen, the Chancellery had a comprehensive area of competence. It was responsible for the entire internal administration of the country, unless individual tasks were assigned to special administrative authorities, such as the Chamber of Pensions. In addition, the Chancellery was also responsible for the foreign affairs of the Danish kingdom until the Department of Foreign Affairs was established for this purpose in 1770. The records of the German Chancellery are of outstanding importance for research on both Schleswig-Holstein and Danish history. This special value of the Chancery Archives is the reason why they are divided between the Reich Archives in Copenhagen and the Schleswig-Holstein State Archives: Copenhagen holds the bulk of the older records before 1730, while the Landesarchiv holds the bulk of the records from 1730 onwards. The written records of the German Chancellery in the Landesarchiv presented in this finding aid are among the most important holdings from the period from the 16th to the mid-19th century that the Landesarchiv has available for research.

Description: Since the middle of the seventeenth century, the "Regierungskanzlei" (government chancellery )in Glückstadt was an authority under the auspices of the central authorities in Copenhagen. It performed important tasks of administration and legal administration in the royal territories of the Duchies of Schleswig andHolstein. The Supreme Court carried out supervision in administrativematters mainly in the areas of church, school, pauper police, economics anddyke. When the Judiciary and Administration were separated from each otherin 1834, the administrative responsibilities of the Supreme Court weretransferred to the newly formed Schleswig-Holstein government. Under thenew designation of "Schleswig´s Landdicasterien", the Supreme Court ofGottorf ("Gottorfer Obergericht") henceforth acted only as a pure judicialauthority which was subordinated to the Superior Court of Appeal in Kiel. The archival materials of the "Gottorfer Obergericht" as presented in thispublication were delivered by and by to the LandesarchivSchleswig-Holstein. The profound and modern edition of the archival Materials is mainly relevant for local research. The publication brings together the concordances 13A and 13B for the firsttime. The aim of this work is to facilitate access to and work with thearchival materials.

Description: Adolf Brenneke (1875-1946), archivist and Northern German regional historian, is above all a classic of archival science. After decades of archival practice, he began teaching at the Prussian School of Archives in Berlin-Dahlem in 1931. In connection with his lecture, he dealt historically-typologically with "Gestalten des Archivs" ("Shapes of the Archive") and, based on the principle of provenance, designed an archive doctrine of order. In doing so, he drew on the intellectual motifs of historicism. Thus he dealt with the history of Johann Gustav Droysen, Friedrich Meinecke's conception of history and the psychology of the humanities of the Dilthey student Eduard Spranger. Due to the circumstances of the "Third Reich", Brenneke was unable to complete his archival studies until his death a few months after the end of the war. His pupil Wolfgang Leesch, however, published Brenneke's "Archival Studies" in 1953 in edited form. With this edition, the original manuscripts are now also made accessible. The focus is on the "archive articles" found in the estate for a non-fiction dictionary of German history that did not come into being. The archive scientist and theorist Dietmar Schenk also illuminates the contexts of the history of ideas and science in a detailed epilogue.

Description: Many of the environmental and development policy problems discussed today have a global impact on people's well-being, while at the same time avoiding national control. Economic analyses describe the low incentives of each nation-state to contribute to the protection of global public goods and recommend cooperation at international level, where the rules for sustainable development need to be defined. International conferences such as the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002 reflect this need, but are lagging behind many in terms of concrete measures. In view of the increasing globality and networking of the problems, the opposing initiative of Local Agenda 21, which suggests a solution in the local area, is surprising. The initiative, which was founded in 1992 and has since then been continued in communities all over the world, is a revolution of small steps that can meaningfully complement and support the effective global proclamations. At the local level, interests can be consolidated, innovative practices tested and snowball effects can be exploited for their dissemination and, in the long term, people's interest and awareness of sustainable development can be awakened. The book examines how local communities can play their role as a second important pillar in the implementation of sustainable development.

Description: On occation of the end of the founding phase of the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences with the integration of the formerly independent Hamburg University of Economics and Politics (HWP) as well as the former Faculties of Economics and Social Sciences of the University of Hamburg, a scientific symposium on university governance with a top-class cast was held. The aim was to compare different management models, especially from other European countries, and to analyse and evaluate them from an experience-based management perspective as well as from a scientific-analytical point of view. A special aspect was the tension between centrality and decentralisation, which is relevant for all universities. The lectures are documented in this volume.

Description: Against the background of fundamental changes caused by processes of globalisation and the effects of demarcation, this conference proceedings with new interpretations of the category of space from different scientific perspectives is dedicated to. Terms such as city, economic area, metropolitan region, leisure and natural space characterize everyday experiences and representations of space, which have a decisive influence on and structure the conception of the world and the environment: The dynamic concept of 'space' thus reveals itself in its symbolic, material and regulatory contents. This ambiguity requires not only a reflexive treatment of spatial metaphors, but also a differentiation and critical accompaniment of political processes, which are examined from a political, planning, economic, cultural and media-scientific perspective on the basis of the Hamburg metropolitan region. This volume collects the contributions of an interdisciplinary workshop on the topic "City - Space - Nature: The Metropolitan Region as a Politically Constructed Space", which took place on June 15-16, 2001 at the University of Hamburg.

Description: In the last few years scientific collections has gained significance. In particular, the "Recommendations on Scientific Collections as Research Infrastructures" published by the German Wissenschaftrat (Science Council) in January 2011 have caused a surge in attention. This volume of the series Hamburg's University Speeches (Hamburger Universitätsreden) documents the frame of the Annual Conference of the Society for University Collections (Gesellschafts für Universitätssammlungen) in 2016 and the lecture given by Ulrich Raulff, Director of the German Literary Archives in Marbach. In his text "The Things and their Relatives" he shows how an object without context immediately loses its meaning. Raulff ends his reflections on things and their collection with an appeal to the representatives of the scientific collections to conduct their own research, namely in their own collections. Archives, museums and collections should not wait for being researched. They should not limit themselves to the classical "research in indexing", but should initiate and carry out research projects themselves. Only through their own understanding of research a meaningful collection policy can be developed, which will really reach the present and the future. The text of the speech is followed by 30 colour photographs of special objects presented by Ulrich Raulff during his lecture in the atrium of the Hamburg State and University Library.

Description: With the end of the First World War, the defeat of the German Empire, was sealed in November 1918. Even after the end of the subsequent revolutionary phase, political conditions in Hamburg remain unstable. On the one hand, they were marked by militant clashes between radical groups; on the other hand, hunger and misery continued to dominate the everyday life of the population. This was the breeding ground for a short section of the history of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, which had not received much attention so far: the "Aspic Riots" or "Hunger Riots" (Sülze- oder Hungerunruhen) .They broke out in the city at the end of June 1919.The discovery of scandalous production and processing methods of a jelly manufacturer led to turmoil throughout the city. These civil war-like conditions, which lasted only a few days, were the reason for the invasion of the Reichswehr troops under General Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck. The background, process and effects of the "hunger riots" are examined and presented in this paper.

Description: Mobile Commerce has gained increasing acceptance amongst various sections of the society in previous years. The reasons for its growth can be traced back to technological and demographical developments that have influenced many aspects of the socio-cultural behaviour in today's world. The need (and/or wish) for mobility seems to be the driving force behind Mobile Commerce. The launch of UMTS technology has provided Mobile Commerce with the necessary verve.Mobile Banking presents an opportunity for banks to retain their existing, technology-savvy customer base by offering value-added, innovative services and to attract new customers from corresponding sections of the society. The customer survey provides evidence that such sections in the meanwhile include the affluent and financially relevant groups of the society in Germany. The time seems to be ripe to convert this non-negligible customer interest into business-driving customer demand. A proactive attitude on the part of the banks seems to be therefore recommendable. Many banks in Germany have come to regard Mobile Banking as a necessary tool for thwarting negative differentiation vis-à-vis rivals and to foster/retain an innovative image. This self-reinforcing dynamism is expected to gain currency in near-future so that Mobile Banking services could soon advance to a standard product - on the lines of Online Banking - offered by more or less each and every bank.

Description: Digitisation makes open science possible. This has many aspects, in particular free access to academic publications and materials (Open Access), transparent peer review procedures (Open Peer Review) or open source technologies (Open Source). Supporting open science in Hamburg as a research location is the aim of the framework Hamburg Open Science. The guidelines developed in this context are intended to make this ecosystem legally tangible. In the first part, the guidelines systematically develop the areas of law concerned. The second part answers legal questions on Open Science that come directly from universities and libraries. In this way, a practice-oriented preparation and mediation can be achieved. The authors of the guide are Dr. Till Kreutzer, partner of the law office iRights.Law, and Henning Lahmann, research associate at iRights.Law.

Description: With the 100th anniversary of Mönckebergstraße in the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, the public was reminded in 2009 of who built the large office buildings in this remarkable shopping street. Franz Bach had a decisive influence on their architecture. Bach also worked as a master builder in various other places in the city. This biography, is the first one about Franz Bach. It traces the extraordinary life of this man: his talent, his architecture and his entrepreneurial spirit are highlighted as well as his social and cultural commitment as a citizen of Hamburg, who built a memorial to Heinrich Heine and Gottfried Semper and was one of the donors of the Hamburgische Wissenschaftliche Stiftung in 1907. Franz Bach's life story is at the same time an exciting journey through Hamburg's architectural history in the Wilhelmine Empire.

Description: The German-Danish War of 1864 has been extensively investigated in the literature -as far as the major political and military events are concerned. The civilian population, the civil administration and the national movements during the war, as well as the economic consequences and the formation of identities after the war, have been more or less neglected. In order to change this, German and Danish historians have written this book. It is the result of a German-Danish conference organized by the the federal state archives in Schleswig and Aabenraa.

Description: This study deals with the provision of software and develops an approach to the analysis and design of software deployment contexts in which software is provided centrally for many. The provision of the web-based cooperation platform CommSy in two different constellations exemplifies the necessity of such a software supply approach for understanding and designing software supply contexts. The present work provides the foundation for the business model Application Service Providing and its extension to the software provisioning approach eASP (evolutionary Application Service Providing). The business model can thus be used for IT. Through eASP, the effects and services of software provision can be taken into account in the evolutionary and participatory software development and IT-supported organization design. eASP is not understood as a model of software provision, but as a pattern that helps to understand and design a concrete software provision.

The volume deals with the comprehensive history of the reception of the book which is the most widely read in Germany besides the bibleIn the years 1950 to 1989 Anne Frank's diary, its later staging as a play and the filming gave the German Federal Republican society the impetus to recall, remind, and deal with the Nazi past. Description: The archive of the University of Kiel was initially established at the University of Kiel itself and has alreday been organized there in the past. A first list of the files exists for the year 1748. In 1934 a depositary contract was concluded with the prior State Archive in Kiel. In the summer of 1934, the first university records were handed over . These files still form the core of university tradition for the period before 1945. Since most of the old files and the current registry had been burned during the Second World War, new files had to be created from 1945 onwards and their archivability had to be awaited. Between 1964 and 1998, several large and small file donations came from the university to the State Archives at irregular intervals. As a result of an agreement concluded in 2002 between the University and the State Archives of Schleswig-Holstein, further files were added to the archive's holdings.

As is already a tradition in German-Danish archival cooperation, this is done in German and Danish. All texts of the publication are therefore available in both languages. The former archivist Hans Kargaard Thomsen, Copenhagen, wrote a detailed report in the 1990s entitled "Arkivoverenskomsten med Tyskland 1933 og dens forhistorie" ("The Archives Agreement with Germany of 1933 and its Prehistory"). It forms the core of the publication. This is followed by guidelines on the use of archival material exchanged in 1936 under the agreement between Germany and Denmark. The archivists Malte Bischoff, Landesarchiv Schleswig-Holstein, and Hans Schultz Hansen, Landsarkivet for Sønderjylland, are the authors of these texts. The annex contains the wording of the German-Danish archive agreement.

Cultural and archival scholars, archivists and academics debated the mission and benefits, responsibility and performance of archives in a widely digitized knowledge society. Archival scholarship in Germany has so far not dealt in detail with the challenge posed by the understanding of the archive in the atmosphere of postmodernity by cultural scholars. With the symposium documented here, the long overdue examination of these positions will now begin. The discussion was conducted in a pragmatic and practice-oriented manner. The contributions combine archival research considerations with the presentation of selected individual topics from archival practice and archive history."

Description: As in all medieval cities, writing became increasingly important in Hamburg in the course of the later Middle Ages. In addition to the creation of various city books, there was a growing need to safely store the originals of important documents. These were collected in the so-called Threse, which soon formed a separate section of the emerging municipal archive. Although the holdings in the Hamburg State Archives are largely complete (with the exception of some losses due to the Second World War, among other things), the indexing by Johann Martin Lappenberg, which took place after the fire in Hamburg City Hall in 1842, still forms the basis for working with the material today. A comprehensive scholarly reappraisal remained a desideratum for a long time.

Description: The autonomy of sport which is constitutionally recognised is not consistently respected by EU law. There are complaints that the necessary cooperation of the federations in sport is not sufficiently taken into account. This is where the speakers of the 9th International Hamburg Symposium "Sport and Economics" come in when they address legal and economic questions about major sporting events and discuss proposals on the status of sport in the European context. It shows that sport is economically shaped, which has not yet found an adequate equivalent at European level. This is evident, for example, in sports betting and the gambling monopoly. The volume will further stimulate the debate created by the EU White Paper on Sport and the Bundestag resolution on sport in Europe.

Description: As founders of the Blohm & Voss-Werft, Hermann Blohm and his partner Ernst Voss have gained importance far beyond Hamburg. By giving the company international recognition, he made a major contribution to the city's enormous upswing as a port and industrial location after 1877. In Hanseatic restraint, the patriarchal shipyard manager who managed his company with determination and rigour as a family-owned company, stepped back completely behind his work. After considerable initial difficulties, the shipyard expanded into a large enterprise. The ups and downs of the shipyard's history reflect the development of Germany in the Weimar Republic between the Wilhelminian era, the quest for power, the First World War, revolution and a new beginning. At the same time and primarily, this history comes alive in the biography of Hermann Blohm, who was also one of the donors of the Hamburgische Wissenschaftliche Stiftung (Hamburg Scientific Society).

Description: Henry P. Newman loved fine arts: In the house of the Hamburg grain wholesaler who introduced revolutionary unloading techniques on his company quay, painters and poets were frequent guests. For many years the merchant banker assembled an extraordinary collection of exquisite paintings. Among them were works by French and German impressionists. When World War I broke out, Henry P. Newman donated the hospital train C1 and accompanied it to Bulgaria in the winter of 1915/16. Although being an educated art lover, Newman was also committed to science. He was a member of the first board of trustees of the Hamburg Scientific Foundation. This biography traces the life of this man, who - contrary to the prevailing self-conception of the Hanseatic merchant team - devoted himself to his profession with dedication and expert knowledge of art.

Description: This study deals with representations of wreathed figures on Attic pottery which can be assigned to the ritual contexts of the festivities in honour of deities in archaic-classical times by means of proven pictorial elements. The aim of the work is to show the significance of the wreath in the sphere of action of the festivals of the gods. One of the priorities is the botanical determination of the different types of leaves because the different wreath representations can be used to determine fixed contexts. Furthermore, the symbolic meaning of the wreath as well as the perception processes of observers of ritualised actions are worked out. The investigation opens up new perspectives by combining different methodological approaches and interdisciplinary contents: it also encourages further research possibilities.

Description: For tertiary education research, the transfer of science into practice - and back - is a fundamental issue. What needs to be specified, however, is what kind of practice is involved, what conceptual understanding underlies transfer and under what conditions, objectives and success criteria transfer is considered. This volume brings together various contributions to describe the conditions for success, models and sustainability of transfer in the field of education. Researchers from higher education didactics, teacher training and further education and school development look at the topic together from their different perspectives. The contributions stem from an interdisciplinary conference for young researchers on the topic of practice transfer in tertiary educational research at the University of Hamburg in November 2017.

Description: The administration of customs and commercial affairs in Denmark and the Duchies of Schleswig, Holstein and (since 1816) Lauenburg has been the responsibility of a number of authorities at the central administrative level: Chamber of Rents in Copenhagen (1660 to 1848), General Country Economics and Commerce College ("General-Landes-Ökonomie- und Kommerzkollegium") (from 1735), West Indo-Guinean Chamber of Rents and General Customs (from 1760), Directorate of Upper Tax in Copenhagen in 1762 (from 1778 Directorate of State Balance and Upper Tax), 1782), unification of the General Country Economics and Commerce College and the West Indo-Guinean Retirement and General Customs Chamber ("Rente- und Generalzollkammer") to the Generalzollkammer- und Kommerzkollegium (1816). With the introduction of the Ministerial Constitution in Denmark in 1848, the activities of the General Chamber of Customs and Commerce ceased. Its responsibility for customs was transferred to the newly established Ministry of Finance. Initially, however, this administrative restructuring only affected the Kingdom of Denmark. With the outbreak of the survey in March 1848, the duchies had their own customs offices under the respective survey authorities. After the end of the survey in 1851, the duchies in Denmark were also given their own ministries in accordance with the reform. However, their powers in customs were transferred to the Ministry of Finance as early as 1852 and finally changed to the newly established Ministry for the Common Internal Affairs of the Monarchy in 1856, only to be transferred back to the Ministry of Finance after its abolition in 1858. The latter, in turn, had the customs system administered by the Directorate General of Customs, set up in 1855 and subordinate to the Ministry. The present register of findings lists only a very small part of the tradition of the supreme customs and commercial authorities responsible for the Kingdom of Denmark and the duchies. The main body of the records of the authorities listed in the finding bookcan be found in the Danish Imperial Archives in Copenhagen

Description: Both Narratology and Digital Humanities look back on a remarkable history of research and progress. One after the other, the narratological and the digital research communities evolved into large international and interdisciplinary networks. While cooperation between the two disciplines would be possible and beneficial in many areas, they often still work in parallel rather than together. A workshop at Hamburg University brought together Literary Studies researchers from Narratology and from Digital Humanities to (a) discuss requirements for and possibilities of a digital operationalisation of analytical categories from Narratology and Literary Studies and (b) theoretically reflect upon possible connections between more traditional and digital approaches. The present volume combines the workshop contributions from both disciplines and thus attempts to further the bridge-building and dialogue.

Description: In the late colonial period, the rural area of Central Mexico was characterized by haciendas, by Spanish-mestic small towns and by indigenous communities, which were defined and composed ethnically according to Spanish law. This study uses microhistorical methods to study the city of Cholula and its rural environment. The focus is on economic processes within the municipalities and interethnic exchange relationships at the individual level. The focus of the study is on Indian households and their scope for economic action. The analysis of the distribution of land ownership in Cholula already shows a high proportion of land ownership in private property, a result that fundamentally contradicts the previous knowledge about the organization of indigenous communities. Their role as a reservoir of labour for the haciendas is well known. This study shows that individual households also produced and marketed significant quantities of different agricultural and industrial products. The proof of the manifold inter-ethnic exchange relationships calls into question the relevance of the traditional description categories "Indian" and "Spanish" for the rural areas of Central Mexico and points out numerous parallels to European agricultural societies of the 18th century.

Description: Since ancient Greek-Latin and Judeo-Christian antiquity and also in a constant return to these two traditions the people of Europe have created a great treasure trove of poems. These poems have expressed and shaped the eras of their history. While myth, epic and novel have told the great stories of the world and of the gods, peoples and heroes, the poem created the ego-telling voice at an early age and thus enabled her to make herself heard and accentuated in the great and small events of the time; to try out feelings, attitudes, values and thus to prepare new mentalities. This division of labour between poem and narrative is always kept in view in the lectures of this book, because they use the now developed approaches of narrative research, narratology, to discover the special possibilities of poetry. Thus, one can see more clearly what role poems and songs play in the subjectivization of religion and love since the Reformation, how they promote the liberation of the individual in the Enlightenment, how they promote a new religion of nature and art, how they stimulate the nationalism of the 19th century and how to adopt new attitudes in the process of modern civilization with daring experiments. The specialist disciplines have distributed this common treasure among themselves and thus almost lost sight of it. The public lecture, however, has made it visible to those involved, always using the example and in a language accessible to all, which has been preserved in this book.

Description: Coffee is not only a popular drink, but also linked different worlds: The coffee trade linked Hamburg and Bremen to transnational networks between Europe and Latin America.Central America was important for global coffee trade because the region was the first to introduce the "wet" form of treatment. The high quality of these "washed" coffees made them sought-after on the world market. German immigrants shaped the trade links between the Central American coffee-growing regions and the North German port cities: They founded export companies, purchased coffee plantations and participated in the prefinancing of the harvests.Christiane Berth analyses biographies and networks of German coffee actors in Guatemala, Costa Rica and Chiapas. It shows how their trade networks became fragile as a result of economic crises and new foreign policy constellation, how it came under pressure in National Socialism and broke up during the Second World War. Nevertheless, trade relations between nation states, networks in the coffee industry and the biographies of coffee players remained closely interlinked, even in the post-war period.

Description: This book investigates the narrative properties of the 19th-century verse novel. The genre grew out of Lord Byron’s Don Juan and established itself in various European literatures, with famous examples such as Pushkin’s Eugene Onegin. The proposed analysis is unique in the existing literature in defining the genre based on formal properties and in examining its exceptional, reflexive structure in detail. Apart from 19th-century texts, verse novels from contemporary literature are also includ-ed, and thus the connection between these two contexts is discussed for the first time extensively.

Description: The responsibility of science is the starting point for intensive discussions. But who is responsible ty for what? This work is based on many years of research into the developments in modern biotechnology. The thorough analysis shows that responsibility is usually borne by the others. Political, legal, administrative and intra-scientific communication and action structures prevent or dilute responsibility to the point of inaccessibility. Stephan Albrecht uses numerous examples from the fields of medicine, agriculture, pharmacy and environmental technology to demonstrate that biotechnological progress is not evolutionary but political, man-made. However, a fundamental error in this progress is that it is not properly understood and negotiated in public, as a res publica. From a democratic point of view, the author proposes an institutional approach to the perception of responsibility in and for the sciences, which is oriented towards the specific challenges of technological innovation and at the same time builds on the best practices of political and civic decision-making.

Description: The chancellery was established as the supreme judicial and administrative authority for the royal portion of Schleswig and Holstein in Flensburg in 1648 and moved to Glückstadt in 1649. Its jurisdiction had been limited to Holstein since 1713 and was extended to the county of Rantzau in 1734, to the Plönian lands in 1762 and to the Gottorfian lands in 1774. At the same time, the name "Glückstädtische Regierung" was replaced by "Holsteinische Landesregierung zu Glückstadt und Holsteinisches Oberkonsistorium". The previously formally different special courts - judicial chancellery, Oberamtsgericht, Pinnebergisches-, Altonaisches-, Rantzauisches Oberappellationsgericht - were combined in 1806 as "Holsteinisches Obergericht". Since 1816 it was called "Holstein-Lauenburgisches Obergericht". When justice and administration were separated in the middle instance in 1834, the administration was transferred to the Schleswig-Holstein government at Gottorf; the higher court continued to exist as a purely judicial authority. When the judiciary and administration were separated in 1834, the records were divided. Most of the judicial files remaining in Glückstadt were later destroyed; the administrative files were preserved and form the core of the holdings kept in the Schleswig-Holstein State Archives.

In the booming metropolis of New York, he expanded his brother's "goods commission and banking business" with skill, diligence and a wealth of ideas. Under his aegis, G. Amsinck & Co. survived revolts in South America, attempts to defraud, and shipwrecks. In addition to its core business which consisted especially of sugar and coffee trading the merchant banker also invested in new barrel tyre patents, prefabricated houses and was involved in the construction of the Panama Canal. Privately, Gustav Amsinck appreciates the beautiful arts and traveling. When the Hamburgische Wissenschaftliche Stiftung came into being in 1907, he was one of its most important donors. This biography traces the rise of this man, who achieved prestige and wealth with Hanseatic merchants' virtues in the land of unlimited possibilities.

Description: In the 17th and 18th centuries, Hamburg was one of the strongholds of European Hebrew studies in Hamburg. The Academic Gymnasium, founded in 1613, created professorships for Hebraic studies or - more comprehensively - for Oriental studies. Names like Hermann Samuel Reimarus are associated with them. Some of these teachers also became the main pastors.Graduated exegete of Old Testament and retired main pastor of the all curch St. Nikolai of Hamburg Ferdinand Ahuis has investigated the legacies of nine of his predecessors from four centuries with regard to their attitude towards Judaism. In this work, he presents their theological interpretations of the Old Testament which have influenced the Christian view of Judaism. The work concludes with a virtual dialogue between the main pastor and biblical scholar Heinz Beckmann and the rabbi and biblical scholar Benno Jacob.

When he went to South Africa in 1875, no one could imagine that the son of converted Hamburg Jews would soon become one of the richest men of his time - thanks to the diamonds of Kimberley and the gold of the Witwatersrand. As a co-founder of De Beers Ltd. and close friend of Cecil Rhodes, the charismatic promoter of British imperialism in southern Africa, Alfred Beit became one of the colonial fathers of Rhodesia. A British subject from 1898, he tried to mediate politically in the conflicts that developed between Germany and Britain with their respective empires, but failed to achieve a reconciliation between the two powers.Alfred Beit was himself a very prominent art collector and throughout his career he generously supported countless nonprofit-making institutions. TheHamburg Scientific Foundation itself owes its founding to one of his major donations. Beit's will passed on his wealth to a trust, which has financed development aid projects since 1906.This is the first comprehensive biography of this outstanding businessman, art collector and internationally active philanthropist.

The numerous known Bronze Age settlement sites and their rich finds in different regions of Crete illustrate varying settlement developments. This study presents a comprehensive overview of found materials, building features and site conditions of 23 Minoan villas in Crete. The analysis is decisively extended by including the geographical conditions of the surroundings and by comparing the Minoan villas with other late bronze age find and settlement sites in Crete. The investigation offers perspectives to review established interpretations of late bronze age settlement conditions of Minoan Crete.

Description: The law, in particular copyright, has a major impact on what remains in collective memory of the great wealth of our cultural heritage. In the digital world where everything is copy and therefore - in the sense of copyright - reproduction, every use of the cultural heritage is also relevant under copyright law. On the other hand, we live in times of rapid media development and an abundance of information, images, films and texts. This is why the challenge of keeping the memory of our cultural heritage alive is all the greater. It is therefore a question of cultural self-assertion how the legal framework conditions for dealing with our cultural heritage are set. What cannot be found online will increasingly disappear. In this respect, the effects of an unbalanced copyright law that does not take sufficient account of cultural heritage can be dramatic. This book brings together various proposals and reflections on how to change the legal framework in order to increase the presence of copyrighted cultural heritage on the Internet. These proposals are written by experts from memory institutions, law and politics, and thus by authors who are well acquainted with the international framework conditions and copyright discourse in Germany.

Description: The fourth volume of the series "Hamburger Historische Forschungen" comprises primarily the edition of an unpublished text. The author is the theologian Prof. Dr. Dr. Dr. Paul Schütz (1891-1985) who was the main pastor at the Hamburg Main Church St. Nikolai from 1940 to 1952. At the same time he taught as a full-time lecturer and later as professor of theology at the Church University of Hamburg. Schütz was one of the first to develop a concept of political religion. His contribution, written in 1935, could not be published at that time.Today, an edition of this article is important for the history of theology and church history. On the other hand, for some years now there has been an intensive discussion in historical research on the interpretation of the "Third Reich" as a "political religion" developed in the 1930s. This model, which sees dictatorships, especially National Socialism, as a "political religion", is generally attributed to Eric Voegelin and Raymond Aron, who published their approaches in 1938 and 1939 respectively. It was not known until recently that Paul Schütz had already developed such a concept three or four years earlier. The present edition can therefore provide new impetus for the debate on the history and viability of this approach and enrich its content.

Description: After the National Socialists seized power in Hamburg on March 8, 1933, the existing professional organisations of teachers were first brought together, then dissolved and replaced by the National Socialist Teachers' Association of Hamburg (Nationalsozialistischer Lehrerbund, NSLB), which was founded in 1931, as the only teacher organisation. The primary school teacher Wilhelm Schulz accomplished National Socialist ideology in the largest Hamburg-based teachers' organization, the Society of Friends of the Patriotic School and Education (Gesellschaft der Freunde des vaterländischen Schul- und Erziehungswesens, GdF), founded in 1805. The teacher's organisation ADLV (Allgemeiner Deutscher Lehrerinnenverein - General German Teachers' Association) has been given priority over equalisation through self-dissolution. In 1935, the professional association of senior teachers, the Hamburg Philologists' Association, was forced to dissolve itself under the pressure imposed on it. The NSLB, now the only professional organisation for teachers in Hamburg, was incorporated into the Political Organisation of the NSDAP. After the beginning of the war, the NSLB lost more and more importance. In the course of the "total war" in February 1943 the Hamburg NSLB was also "shut down" for the duration of the war, at the command of the Führer. His story was thus already over two years before the fall of the dictatorship.

Description: The people of the late medieval city of Hamburg laid the foundations for power, prosperity and influence on the banks of the river Elbe. The more important the city became, the greater the need was to store important documents safely. While this task was initially only taken over by a small crate, the so-called "Threse" soon grew into a cabinet with drawers and finally into a room of the town hall.Although the holdings in the Hamburg State Archives have been handed down to a large extent in their entirety, there was no comprehensive scientific analysis. Therefore, a project of the University of Hamburg from February 2010 to March 2012 took on a contemporary edition of the collection. This volume titled "Hamburg's Memory - the Threse of the Hamburg Council, covers the years 1350 to 1399. Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Jürgen Sarnowsky, scientific authors Jeanine Marquard and Nico Nolden draw up Regesta who represent all aspects of the content, not only legally relevant ones. The annotation apparatus links the pieces with each other, explains people, places and terms and gives text-critical hints. In the registers, keywords classify the pieces 1) according to persons, 2) offices and institutions and 3) places and terms. In addition, a picture attachment shows chancellery signs, notarial instruments and other symbols."

Description: Georg Hermann Stoltz was distinguished by his vision for economic development and his determined pursuit of a wide range of activities, as well as by his good knowledge of human nature, leadership, sales talent, and reliability. With this volume, the first biography of Georg Hermann Stoltz (1845-1939) is available. It provides valuable insights into the life of a man who, as a successful merchant and company founder in Brazil and Hamburg, has rendered outstanding services to relations between South America and Europe. The biography was written by Hans Joachim Schröder; it is the 21st volume in the series "Mäzene für Wissenschaft" published by the Hamburg Scientific Foundation. in many respects, Georg Hermann Stoltz is a typical representative of the group of Hamburg patrons who established the Hamburgische Wissenschaftliche Stiftung with their donations in 1907, thus enabling the foundation of the Hamburg University twelve years later: Like most others, he worked as an overseas merchant. Like some of the other members of the group, he built up extensive trade between South America, especially between Brazil and Hamburg. In the course of his long life he thus became a pioneer of German-Brazilian relations. His wealth allowed him to establish a generous residence in Wentorf near Hamburg and a foundation in Lüneburg, where he attended school at the Johanneum. In all this he became the ancestor of a large family that is still alive today.

Description: The present book by the Hamburg teacher and historian Uwe Schmidt on Hamburg schools in the "Third Reich" is the first comprehensive presentation of the school system in the Hanseatic city between 1933 and 1945. It is based on in-depth source research. The extensive study covers all types of schools and goes beyond the borders of the Hanseatic city before 1937: for the first time, it examines the school history of the former Prussian towns of Altona, Harburg and Wandsbek as well as other surrounding communities, which were added by the Gross-Hamburg Act in 1937.In addition to the content of this monograph, the qualified register of persons with biograms and, above all, the survey of the individual Hamburg schools and their history, which has been compiled with great effort, are particularly commendable, making this study a useful reference work. The work is divided into two parts: Volume 1 contains only the comprehensive presentation of the contents, while Volume 2 contains a listing of abbreviations, the list of schools from 1933 to 1945, statistical lists, references to sources, bibliography and sources, the registers (persons, subject and geographical index), the index of illustrations as well as information on authors and editors, the series and the Verein für Hamburgische Geschichte.

In search of personal freedom he persuaded his strict father in 1867 to let him go to New York. The fact that Lewisohn, as an industrialist in the USA, will generate millions of euros in only twenty years time would have seemed like a fairy tale to the young migrant.

Description: This volume collects the revised contributions of a conference that took place in March 2002 at the Warburg-Haus in Hamburg. It was organised as part of the "Nature in Conflict" research project, which was funded by the Volkswagen Foundation within the framework of the "Key Humanities Issues" funding programme. This interdisciplinary project was dedicated to the investigation of mental concepts, images, models and value attributions that belong to the collective fund of our ideas of nature. In this context, the investigations are directed from the perspective of various disciplines - ethnology or social anthropology, history, coastal research in the natural sciences, literature, linguistics and media studies - in particular at those images of nature and models that belong to the argumentations and convictions that are often not discussed.

Description: During the Reichspogromnacht between November 9th and 10th, 1938, in Germany and Austria 1400 synagogues and other Jewish institutions as well as thousands of Jewish homes and shops were destroyed. More than 30.000 men were deported, and at least 100 killed. This pogrom, frequently referred to as ,,Reichskristallnacht, marked the beginning of political and economic persecution of Jews in Nazi Germany, and an increasingly brutal treatment of the Jewish minority, thus paving the way for the Holocaust. With regards to the 75th annual recurrence of the Reichspogromnacht, the Landesarchiv Schleswig-Holstein in 2013 presented an exhibition centered around the events of that night in Northern Germany. This exhibition was prepared in close cooperation with the University of Flensburg and the Landeszentrale für politische Bildung Schleswig-Holstein. It was accompanied by a series of lectures that are included in this book as well as some of the illustrations displayed."

Description: The Finnish painter Helene Schjerfbeck (1862–1946) is one of the most famous art-ists in Finland, whereas outside the Nordic countries her works are still presented as a discovery. This thesis focuses on her self-portraits that create a core element of her oeuvre. A close reading of the self-portraits gives insight into the wide range of topics, that are inherent in the paintings and drawings. A characteristic of Schjerfbeck’s imagery is a non finito aesthetic, which is more than just a matter of style. Rather, this specific aesthetic contributes to a multi-layered depiction of the self. A closer look at the historical context shows how some of her commissioned self-portraits were part of a public image of the artist, that had its origin in the first decades of the 20th century. Other works, some of them not meant for the public, give insight into a more intimate reflection, that offers visual approaches to gender, otherness, death and creativity. References to works of Tyko Sallinen, Edvard Munch, Pablo Picasso, Käthe Kollwitz or Francis Bacon help to understand Schjerfbeck’s unique visual meditations on existential questions of humanity.

Description: The date of May 13, 2011 marked the 100th anniversary of the inauguration of today's main building of the University of Hamburg on Edmund-Siemers-Allee. On the same day, the program begun in 1999 to name its seven lecture halls after outstanding scholars expelled during the Nazi era was completed. This book is therefore being published on these two occasions. In addition to an introduction to the multifaceted history of the building, the volume collects portraits of the seven namesakes of the lecture halls: biographical and werkanalytische approaches to the philosopher Ernst Cassirer, the art historian Erwin Panofsky, the German scholar Agathe Lasch, the mathematician Emil Artin, the lawyer Magdalene Schoch, the international law expert and peace researcher Albrecht Mendelssohn Bartholdy and the social economist Eduard Heimann. Together with the "Stolpersteinen" (Stumbling Stones), which were laid in front of the domed building in 2010, the auditorium appointments form an ensemble through which the main building represents the University of Hamburg in a special way as a central place of remembrance.

Description: Formation of order and cognition are interdependent. Knowledge presupposes the observation of order structures or their creation through abstraction and modelling. Contributions from different areas of university research examine structures that relate to (partially) autonomous actors (or agents) and the dynamic processes in which they are developed. Processes of knowledge that take place in this context require structures of order that can be experienced interobjectively, and in some cases can also be grasped in symbolism and rituals, even if these structures are created simultaneously with processes of action or knowledge. Recursive references can lead to forms of self-organization. In more highly developed structures, aspects of knowledge, learning (and forgetting) can be included and additionally strengthened or weakened by emotional states. On November 5, 2005, scientists came together for a workshop on "Formation of Order and Knowledge Processes" at the University of Hamburg. In this volume, numerous of the given talks and articles are collected.
