    Description: When scholars discuss the medieval past, the temptation is to become immersed there, to deepen our appreciation of the nuances of the medieval sources through debate about their meaning. But the past informs the present in a myriad of ways and medievalists can, and should, use their research to address the concerns and interests of contemporary society. This volume presents a number of carefully commissioned essays that demonstrate the fertility and originality of recent work in Medieval Studies. Above all, they have been selected for relevance. Most contributors are in the earlier stages of their careers and their approaches clearly reflect how interdisciplinary methodologies applied to Medieval Studies have potential repercussions and value far beyond the boundaries of the Middles Ages. These chapters are powerful demonstrations of the value of medieval research to our own times, both in terms of providing answers to some of the specific questions facing humanity today and in terms of much broader considerations. Taken together, the research presented here also provides readers with confidence in the fact that Medieval Studies cannot be neglected without a great loss to the understanding of what it means to be human.

    Description: Vom 19. Jahrhundert als einer Mediengesellschaft zu sprechen, erscheint als ein Anachronismus. Der Begriff sucht den Bedeutungsgewinn und die Diversifizierung der Medien in der Gegenwart zu erfassen und damit nicht zuletzt heutige von früheren Gesellschaften abzugrenzen. Die Annahme, dass Medien in früheren Gesellschaften nicht ebenfalls eine zentrale und spezifische Rolle zukam, wäre jedoch irrig. So war das 19. Jahrhundert nicht nur vom Aufstieg ein Vielzahl einstmals neuer Medien geprägt, sondern auch dadurch, dass sich die Gesellschaft über öffentliche und mediale Kommunikation erst konstituierte und ausdifferenzierte. Der Band macht es sich zur Aufgabe, ineinander greifende zentrale mediale und gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen für Deutschland und für Frankreich in einer übergreifenden wie vergleichenden Perspektive vorzustellen.     Description: Das föderale Alte Reich gilt heute wie auch im zeitgenössischen Frankreich in Vielem als vorbildlich. Guido Braun befasst sich mit seinem Bild bei den französischen Staatsmännern, Diplomaten, Juristen, Historikern und Philosophen vom Westfälischen Friedenskongress (1643/48) bis zur diplomatischen Revolution (1756). Im Mittelpunkt steht ihr Verständnis seiner politischen Strukturen. Methodisch betritt das Buch Neuland, da Übersetzungen als Geschichtsquelle herangezogen und vor dem Hintergrund einer Kulturgeschichte der Diplomatiesprachen interpretiert werden. Die französischen Übersetzungen von Reichsgrundgesetzen und Friedensverträgen stellen Dokumente ersten Ranges zur Erforschung der Vorstellungen dar, welche die Franzosen mit dem Reich verbanden und die Aufschluss über deren Selbstbild bieten. Diese Vorstellungswelten werden durch eine Analyse der zeitgenössisch in französischer Sprache publizierten Bücher über das Reich noch tiefer gehend interpretiert. Dabei werden auch umfangreiche archivalische Quellen sowie ausgewählte Propaganda- und Zeitschriften herangezogen. Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der französischen Deutschlandpolitik werden zu bestimmten Schlüsselmomenten deutlich.

    Description: This book addresses the question of vigilance in the face of an epidemic at the beginning of the 18th century, based on the example of the fight against the plague in the French Mediterranean. Because of its trans-Mediterranean trade, this region was particularly exposed to the risk of plague so that it sought to protect itself with concrete measures such as quarantine. ; Cet ouvrage s’intéresse au risque et à la vigilance face à la peste sur la côte méditerranéenne française dans la première moitié du 18e siècle. Entre 1720 et 1722, une terrible épidémie de peste frappe Marseille, la Provence, le Comtat-Venaissin et une partie du Languedoc, causant environ 100'000 décès. Aussi dramatique soit-elle, cette épidémie constitue une exception durant la première moitié du 18e siècle. La première partie de ce travail analyse les rapports entre vigilance, espace et communication et met en évidence une prévention qui s’exerce tant de manière transméditerranéenne que de manière interne au royaume de France. Une véritable «bureaucratie sanitaire» se met en place. La deuxième partie étudie les normes et les pratiques de la vigilance sanitaire, tant sur un plan politico-sanitaire (quarantaines des navires, des passagers et des marchandises) que sur un plan religieux (processions et prières pour endiguer la maladie). Enfin, la dernière partie se limite à la peste de 1720-1722 et illustre le passage d’une vigilance préventive à une vigilance réactive en s’intéressant aux «acteurs de la peste» et aux attitudes et tactiques développées face au fléau épidémique.
