    Description: The ten articles in this edited volume examine the city of Varkaus as a small city struggling with structural change using historical documents as well as survey and interview data. The city of Varkaus, which has a long industrial history, has lost a large part of its industrial jobs in the first decades of this millennium and its population has fallen sharply in recent years. However, a survey of the adult population shows that the inhabitants of Varkaus are typically satisfied with their work, with their social relationships and their lives in general. Varkaus is seen as a safe and good living environment. A central element of well-being is couple relationship, as well as other social relationships. The lack of well-being often stems from unemployment, low income and feelings of not belonging to the place of residence. Young adults value their place of residence as well as their family relationships, but there are tensions in their life regarding work and income. The tranquility and proximity to nature of Varkaus are appreciated, but there are also many who long for more urban heartbeat in their hometown.
    Description: Tässä kymmenestä artikkelista koostuvassa kokoomateoksessa tarkastellaan Varkautta rakennemuutoksen kanssa kamppailevana pienenä kaupunkina historiallisia dokumentteja sekä vuosina 2016–2017 kerättyjä kysely- ja haastatteluaineistoa hyödyntäen. Pitkän teollisuushistorian omaava Varkauden kaupunki on tämän vuosituhannen ensimmäisinä vuosikymmeninä menettänyt suuren osan teollisista työpaikoistaan ja sen väestö on supistunut voimakkaasti. Kuitenkin koko aikuisväestöä edustava kysely kertoo, että varkautelaiset ovat tyypillisesti tyytyväisiä työhönsä, sosiaalisiin suhteisiinsa ja elämäänsä muutenkin. Varkaus nähdään turvallisena ja hyvän elämän puitteet tarjoavana asuinpaikkana. Hyvinvoinnin tärkeitä osatekijöitä ovat parisuhde ja muut sosiaaliset suhteet. Hyvinvoinnin puutteet liittyvät työttömyyteen, pienituloisuuteen sekä ulkopuolisuuden tunteisiin suhteessa asuinpaikkaan. Nuoret aikuiset arvostavat omaa asuinpaikkakuntaansa sekä perhe- ja sukulaisuussuhteitaan, mutta arkielämään liittyy jännitteitä työn ja toimeentulon osalta. Varkauden rauhallisuutta ja luonnonläheisyyttä arvostetaan, mutta monet toivoivat siltä myös enemmän kaupunkimaista sykettä.

    Description: Nothing exceptional happened in front of the youth association building in Kalajoki on 9 September 1953. There was a minor confrontation between regional police forces and local youth, but hundreds of similar events happened in small municipalities across Finland. The event took about ten minutes, nobody was seriously hurt, and collective feelings quickly calmed down. However, after extensive investigations, the regional prosecutor thought otherwise and prosecuted half a dozen local men for rebellion against the state in January 1954. The district court agreed. The municipality was shocked, and the Finnish society was taken by surprise. The case ended up in Supreme Court. This book analyses why and how the last rebellion in the history of Finland occurred in a tiny municipality on the west coast of Finland. The analysis is based on historical microsociology that integrates the insights of microhistory and microsociology into event structure analysis and collective memory studies.

    Description: This edited volume discusses multiple job holding as part of Finnish working life. The articles in this book examine this little researched phenomenon through a wide range of empirical data. Based on Statistics Finland's register data, different ways of combining jobs are classified. Interview material sheds light on the conditions for holding multible jobs. A new perspective is provided by the chaos theory of careers. According to the results of the study, very different paths lead to becoming a multiple job holder. The combination of jobs is influenced by the life path and interests of the individual, as well as by constraints and opportunities available. Motives can also be linked to professional networks, decisions made by immediate family, coincidences or whims. This book helps to understand the diversity of ways of working. At the same time, it illustrates the challenges faced by those who work multiple jobs as they try to operate within simpler models and categorisations of labour. It is essential reading for anyone interested in the changing nature of work, especially researchers, students and policy-makers.

    Description: Social and the ecological welfare should be taken as the main aim of all politics. This is the message of this book titled The Enchantment of Social Policy. Basic social security system needs to be rebuilt and grounded on the universal basic income that everyone can top up by participating to the society in different ways. Universal basic income can be seen as a mean to recognize all valuable participation to for example voluntary work or care of elderly people. In conditions of high unemployment, this kind of universalistic social security would weaken the nexus between employment and welfare. It would promote a society and culture that is less dependent on the exploitation of natural resources. This book describes building blocks that are needed to reconstitute the enchantment of social policy – the utopian that we should collectively pursue.
    Description: Sosiaalipolitiikan Lumon kirjoittajilla on viesti. Mielestämme politiikan keskeiseksi tavoitteeksi tulisi asettaa sosiaalinen ja ekologinen hyvinvointi. Tätä tavoitetta kohti tulisi kulkea universalismin periaattein ja kansalaisten perusturva, oli sitten kyse työllisistä tai työttömistä, nuorista tai iäkkäistä, kantaväestöstä tai maahanmuuttajista, tulisi rakentaa kaikille yhtäläisen perustulon pohjalle. Tätä perusturvaa jokainen voisi täydentää ansiotuloilla ja omaehtoisella, sosiaaliturvassa kompensoitavalla osallistumisella yhteiskunnalliseen työhön kuten vapaaehtoistyöhön, harrastusryhmien ohjaamiseen, omaisen tai lasten hoivaan. Tämä antaisi arvon monenlaiselle hyödylliselle toimelle, joka nyt jää yhteiskunnassa tunnistamatta. Tällainen sosiaaliturva ottaisi lähtökohdakseen uuden ihmisarvon ja loisi luonnonvaroja säilyttävää ja niukkaan materian käyttöön perustuvaa kulttuuria ja taloutta. Sosiaalipolitiikalla olisi tällaisessa politiikassa aktiivinen ja yhteiskunnan taloudellista ja sosiaalista kehitystä vauhdittava rooli, ja kansalaiset olisi kutsuttu hyvinvoinnin aktiivisiksi tekijöiksi.

In Finland, most discussion on the welfare state's condition has focused on stabilizing the public-sector's finances. A functional welfare state combines economic stability with the social foundation. However in the mid 2010s there are cracks in the social foundation of the welfare state . In this book the cracks of welfare state's social foundation are analysed from the perspective of dependency on social security. Especially the Finns' attitudes and political divisions, policies, the length of customership of last-resort social security, the functionality of service and income transfer systems, social segmentation created by breadlines and coping on the last-resort social security are observed. The book is meant for all interested in the condition and future of the welfare state. It is suitable as a textbook in universities and universities of applied sciences. The editor of the book, Juho Saari, is Professor in social and health policy at the University of Tampere and part-time Professor in welfare sociology at the University of Eastern Finland.     Description: "Suurin osa hyvinvointivaltion tilasta käydystä yhteiskuntapoliittisesta keskustelusta on kohdentunut julkisen talouden vakauttamiseen. Tässä teoksessa analysoidaan hyvinvointivaltion sosiaalisen perustan halkeamia ja murroksia sosiaaliturvariippuvuuden näkökulmasta.     Description: "Julkisten palvelujen järjestämisen ja tuottamisen tavat ovat olleet melkoisessa turbulenssissa viime aikoina. Tulevaisuuden maakunta- ja sote-uudistus jatkaa muutoksen aikaa ja voimistaa aikaisemmin alkanutta kehitystä ottamalla asiakkaat, yksityiset toimijat ja markkinat mukaan palvelujen kehittämiseen ja tuottamiseen. Markkinoiden luominen ja huoltaminen (ALIS) -hankkeen tavoitteena oli laajentaa ymmärrystä sosiaali- ja terveysmarkkinoiden toiminnasta sekä markkinoilla toimivien motiiveista, tarpeista ja toimintalogiikoista. Sote-palvelut markkinoilla -teos kokoaa yhteen ALIS-hankkeen keskeiset havainnot ja johtopäätökset. Kirja jakaantuu neljään osakokonaisuuteen, jotka koostuvat itsenäisistä tieteellisistä artikkeleista. Ensimmäinen osa käsittelee kuntia sote-markkinoiden toimijoina ja hahmottelee uuden elinvoimakunnan toimintamallia. Toinen osa avaa osallisuuden ja asiakaslähtöisyyden teemoja osana palvelujen kehittämistä. Kolmannessa osassa tarkastellaan hankintoja ja erityisesti tulosperusteista hankintaa, joka on verraten uusi palvelujen hankintatapa. Neljäs osa haastaa lukijaa markkinoiden laajempaan tarkasteluun astetta filosofisemmin ja liberalistisemmin. Kokonaisuudessaan teos tarjoaa monipuolisen näkymän sosiaali- ja terveyspalveluihin sekä -markkinoihin. ALIS-hanke toteutettiin vuosina 2013–2016 ja se rahoitettiin Tekesin Innovaatiot sosiaali- ja terveyspalveluissa -ohjelmasta. Hankkeen kohdekaupunkeina olivat Jyväskylä, Tampere ja Turku."

    Description: The focus of this research is on Finland’s role in Soviet Union’s calculation of its foreign policy between 1920 and 1930. This was the first decade of both Finnish independence and of Soviet power in Russia. This book answers questions about the objectives of Soviet foreign policy in Finland, on the contacts used by the Soviet legation to obtain information, and on how well the Soviets understood Finland’s objectives. People interested in Finland and in Russian perspectives with regards to foreign policy and neighbouring countries will find much new in this book because it relies on formerly unpublished Russian archival material to form the basis for charting Soviet objectives in Finland. The book shows that the Soviets primarily observed Finland in a larger regional context along with other states on its borders in the Baltic Sea region. The global objectives of the revolution and the Soviet Union, but also the domestic political situation in both countries, are reflected on this framework. The period was characterized by forced collectivization in the Soviet Union and, in Finland, by the rise of the right-wing Lapua Movement that emerged at the onset of the Great Depression, laying the foundations for the most severe crisis in the relations during 1929–1930 when the issues surrounding these events destabilized simultaneously the society and political decision-making in both countries.

    Description: The growth of cultural diversity in Finnish social and health care workplaces challenges to develop not only ways of working and interaction but also organizational structures. Work communities as a whole are facing new challenges. The aim of this book is to help work communities develop well-functioning practices for intercultural work. Effective interaction between cultures provides the foundation not only for the well-being of staff and customers, but also for the financial success of the organization. The paper presents five action studies in the social and health care organization, which analyzed the abrasion points of everyday interaction, developed functional practices and corrective measures, and evaluated the effects of interventions. The aim of the project was to bring about structural reforms in support of inter-cultural work, since only the changes would become permanent.
    Description: Kulttuurisen monimuotoisuuden kasvu Suomen sosiaali- ja terveydenhuollon työyhteisöissä haastaa kehittämään paitsi työskentely- ja vuorovaikutustapoja myös organisationaalisia rakenteita. Työyhteisöt kokonaisuudessaan ovat uusien haasteiden edessä. Tämän teoksen tavoitteena on auttaa työyhteisöjä kehittämään hyvin toimivia käytäntöjä kulttuurien välisen työn arkeen. Toimiva kulttuurien välinen vuorovaikutus luo pohjaa paitsi henkilöstön ja asiakkaiden hyvinvoinnille myös organisaation taloudelliselle menestymiselle. Teoksessa esitellään viidessä sosiaali- ja terveydenhuollon organisaatiossa toteutettua toimintatutkimusta, jossa selvitettiin arjen vuorovaikutuksen hankauspisteitä, kehitettiin toimivia käytäntöjä ja korjaavia toimenpiteitä ja arvioitiin interventioiden vaikutuksia. Hankkeen tavoitteena oli saada aikaan kulttuurien välistä työtä tukevia rakenteellisia uudistuksia, sillä vain siten muutoksista tulee pysyviä.

    Description: Discursive study of religion (DSR) has become an increasingly recognised and applied approach to the study of religion. It asks: What passes for ‘religion’ in society?
