    Description: "Drawing on the debate on mediatization of politics this study identifies cultural meanings, institutional practices and styles of argumentation as three theoretical dimensions that illuminate both the construction of journalistic publicity and its potential uses in political action. Based on the theoretical model, environmental politics is identified as a specific context for mediatization. In environmental politics, the interplay of cultural meanings, institutional practices and styles of argumentation define the construction and use of journalistic publicity in a way that differs from other fields of politics. The empirical part of this study analyzes the newspaper coverage of three Finnish environmental conflicts from 1971, 1994 and 2012. The theoretical model is transformed into an analytical framework that focuses on discursive construction of the conflicts (cultural meanings), journalistic frames, narration and opinion-giving in the coverage of the conflicts and the publicity practices adopted by actors during the conflicts (institutional practices) and legitimation of arguments (styles of argumentation). According to this study, the relation between media and politics in the field of environmental politics is defined by the increasing cultural significance of environmental protection from the 1970s to the present. In the newspaper coverage of the three environmental conflicts studied, changes on the frames, narration and opinion-giving of journalism resonated with this cultural change. However, the significance of environmental protection in the framing, narration and opinion-giving of journalism was greater in the national newspaper studied compared to the local newspapers selected based on their proximity to the conflict sites. Styles of argumentation appeared to be more case dependent. The increasing cultural significance of environmental protection did not have a clear effect on how arguments were legitimated. "

    Description: " Voting advice applications (VAA) have supported Finnish voters for over 20 years in their voting decisions in general elections. Most Finnish VAAs are planned and provided by the media, and they are based on matching opinions of individual candidates with an individual VAA users before elections. Nowadays, in Finland, VAAs are important for almost all age groups. Among the youngest voters VAAs are viewed as the most important source of information to support voting decisions. The book provides up-to-date and comprehensive picture over the role and significance of VAAs in the Finnish political system and in the political communication arena. Research topics deal also with VAA journalism and how candidates perceive VAAs. Research data and data materials in use are wide-ranging. They range from survey data sets to questions of VAAs and from interviews of candidates and VAA producers to media content about VAAs. Theoretical research questions are mostly related to the democratic value of VAAs. This perspective is central also in the end of the book, which opens possible future pathways for the VAAs."

    Description: The topic of the book is the incremental growth of linguistic knowledge from lexical to structural-cum-textual during the so-called later language development. Language mastery does not presuppose any acquaintance with prescriptive grammar but, instead, concerns the core of language which the so-called consensus principle applies to: the most frequent words and structures are mastered with certainty by everybody, but uncertainty increases as less frequent and more variable phenomena are taken into consideration. It is the goal of the study to make explicit the knowledge that is common to school children of different age groups, and to show how it develops both in its core and in its fringe areas. The mastery of less common aspects exhibits considerable statistical variation. The research embodies methodological pluralism insofar as it has been carried out by means both of the corpus method and the experimental method. Here experimental subsumes writing tasks, paper-and-pencil tests, and behavior under experimental conditions. The amount of participants native in Finnish varies from 300–2000. The book has a bipartite structure: mastery of meanings (Part I), and mastery of forms (Part II).

In times of individuality, efficiency and competitiveness, countermeasures are needed to build community-building practices. Collaboration requires a common language, common understanding, trust and increasingly multilingualism whose importance has been emphasized with new media and virtual communities. When educating and teaching communities understand the importance of the community, through everyday interaction, there are opportunities to establish strong links between the teacher and the learners. If a common curriculum activity is to be developed as a meaningful negotiation of the entire education and teaching community, it also requires interaction and co-operation between different actors.
    Description: Tämä kokoomateos lähestyy koulutuksen ja kasvatuksen yhteisöjä tutkivalla ja kehittävällä otteella. Yksilöllisyyttä, tehokkuutta ja kilpailukykyä painottavana aikana tarvitaan vastavoimana yhteisöjä rakentavia toimintatapoja. Yhteistyön edellytyksenä on yhteinen kieli, yhteinen ymmärrys, luottamus sekä yhä enenevässä määrin monilukutaito, jonka merkitys on korostunut uusien medioiden ja virtuaalisten yhteisöjen myötä. Kun kasvatus- ja opetusyhteisössä ymmärretään yhteisön merkitys, arjen vuorovaikutuksen kautta on mahdollisuuksia luoda vahvistuvia yhteyksiä opettajan ja oppijoiden välille. Jos yhteistä opetussuunnitelmaan perustuvaa toimintaa halutaan kehittää koko kasvatus- ja opetusyhteisön merkitysneuvotteluna, se niin ikään edellyttää keskinäistä vuorovaikutusta ja eri toimijoiden välistä yhteistyötä. Teoksen ensimmäisessä osassa, Opetussuunnitelma yhteisön työnä, tarkastellaan korkea-asteen ja perusopetuksen opetussuunnitelmatyön ajankohtaisia kysymyksiä. Opetussuunnitelmatyössä kohtaavat rakenteet ja yksilöt, poliittiset, taloudelliset ja pedagogiset intressit, oppijoiden, opettajien, johdon ja virkamiesten maailmat sekä erilaiset tavat nähdä tieto ja tietäminen, osaaminen ja yhteiskunnan muutokset. Toisessa osassa, Opiskelija yhteisön jäsenenä, keskitytään opintoihin kiinnittymisen, hyvinvoinnin ja mielekkäiden oppimiskokemusten arviointiin, tukemiseen ja kehittämiseen opetusyhteisöissä luoden samalla vaihtoehtoista tulkintaa ja viitekehystä nykyiselle tehokkuutta ja tuloksia korostavalle ajattelutavalle. Kolmannessa osassa, Lukeminen, kirjoittaminen ja monilukutaito koulutuksen yhteisöissä, katsotaan paitsi kirjoittamisen opetuksen historiaan suomalaisessa koulussa mutta pyritään myös ymmärtämään tulevaa ja sitä, mitä lukutaidolla oikeastaan nykyisin tarkoitetaan. Erilaisissa kasvatuksen ja opetuksen yhteisöissä on olennaista kehittää opetusta askel askeleelta eteenpäin kohti oppijoiden ja opettajien hyvinvoivia ja uutta luovia yhteisöjä. Teoksen nimessä oleva Kehittämisen palat kuvaa kehittämistyön vähittäistä, pienin askelin etenemistä ja yhteisöjen salat puolestaan yhteisöjen monilta osin tiedostamatonta potentiaalia kasvatuksen ja opetuksen kehittämisessä.

    Description: "Towards New Beginnings: Journalists’ Descriptions about Ruptures in Media Work This volume reveals a previously untold view on changes in media work in Finland. Finnish journalists relate their experiences of being made redundant or deciding to resign, and their views on their profession in a time of flux. The data are based on telephone surveys, in-depth interviews and journalists’ written accounts. Journalists are riddled with insecurity about their future. They feel they have borne the brunt of misplaced investments and the economic conjuncture, and their work motivation and creativity have suffered due to recurring layoffs in newsrooms. Support from employment authorities for finding a new job has also been practically non-existent, and coping with a career change has generated further stress and insecurity. However, journalists who have found new employment typically feel more comfortable in these jobs than in their former work. Career shifters have also been able to make use of their journalistic skills in their new jobs and identify themselves as journalists. The authors are from the Research Centre for Journalism, Media and Communication (COMET) at the University of Tampere, Finland. The study was funded by the Finnish Work Environment Fund and the Foundation for Promoting Journalistic Culture (JOKES). "
    Description: " Teos tarjoaa uutta, kokemusperäistä tietoa toimittajista mediatyön murroksessa. Suomalaiset journalismin tekijät kertovat kokemuksistaan ja näkemyksistään, kun oma työsuhde päättyy irtisanomiseen tai irtisanoutumiseen ja kun oma ammatti käy läpi merkittävää murrosvaihetta. Toimittajien kokemuksia yt-neuvotteluista, työttömyydestä ja uudelleentyöllistymisestä on koottu teosta varten puhelinkyselyllä, teemahaastatteluin sekä toimittajien laatimilla kirjoitelmilla. Tutkimuksen mukaan toimittajia jäytää epävarmuus tulevaisuudesta. Ammattikunta kokee joutuneensa virheinvestointien ja suhdanteiden sijaiskärsijäksi, ja työmotivaatio sekä luovuus ovat kärsineet toistuvien yt-kierrosten takia. Uuden työn löytäminen on jäänyt jokaisen omalle kontolle; työvoimaviranomaisilta ei ole herunut edes rohkaisua uuteen alkuun. Vanhasta työstä luopuminen ja uuteen sopeutuminen ovat kuormittaneet ja luoneet epävarmuutta esimerkiksi pärjäämisestä. Tutkimukseen haastatellut uudelleentyöllistyneet toimittajat kertoivat silti viihtyvänsä uudessa työssä paremmin kuin edellisessä työpaikassa. Vaikka toimittaja oli vaihtanut toiselle alalle, hän pystyi yhä hyödyntämään journalistista osaamistaan ja tuntemaan itsensä edelleen toimittajaksi. Teos on tarkoitettu paitsi tutkijoille ja opiskelijoille myös mediatyötä ja laajemminkin tietotyötä tekeville. Se sopii luettavaksi myös muille mediasta ja työelämästä kiinnostuneille. Kirjan tekijät ovat tutkija Auli Harju, journalistiikan yliopistonlehtori Kari Koljonen ja journalistiikan professori Ari Heinonen.     Description: Muuttuvat suomalaiset äänimaisemat (Transforming Finnish Soundscapes, eds Heikki Uimonen, Meri Kytö & Kaisa Ruohonen) is a collection of research essays and texts that study the sonic environment and how it is experienced. Soundscapes related to time, place and the everyday shape our perception of the present and the past. Sounds can be pleasant and beautiful, pacing the day or year, annoying, boring and everything in between. The theme of transforming soundscapes combines the research essays in the publication. The essays draw from various disciplines and methodologies: media studies, anthropological field work and sensory observation, textual analysis and close reading, folkloristics, archeoacoustics and music studies. In turn, the texts gathered via a writing competition show how sounds can be listened to both analytically and aesthetically, connecting them to local, national and transnational cultures and histories pondering what sounds mean to the listeners and how they influence the soundscape they live in. The study is a revisit to the One Hundred Finnish Soundscapes project (2006).

Muuttuvien äänimaisemien tematiikka yhdistää myös kirjan tutkimusartikkeleita. Tutkimuksellisesti ne nojaavat eri tieteentraditioihin ja menetelmiin: mediatutkimukseen ja -analyysiin, antropologiseen kenttätallennukseen ja aistinvaraiseen havainnointiin, tekstianalyysiin ja lähilukuun, folkloristiikkaan, arkeoakustiikkaan ja musiikintutkimukseen. Kirjoituskilpailussa kerätyt tekstit puolestaan osoittavat, kuinka ääniä on mahdollista kuunnella analyyttisesti ja esteettisesti, asettaa ne osaksi alueellista, paikallista, valtakunnallista tai ylirajaista kulttuurihistoriallista tarkastelua ja pohtia, mitä ääni kuuntelijalleen merkitsee ja miten hän äänimaisemaansa vaikuttaa. Tutkimus on jatkoa Sata suomalaista äänimaisemaa -hankkeelle (2006).

    Description: This book is the first Finnish-language collection of research on superdiversity. At the core of the book is the growing migration to Finland since the turn of the 1990s and its numerous effects on Finnish society. The interdisciplinary examination of superdiversity is important at the current moment: Finland as a society has reached the point where certain social categories, such as ethnic background, country of birth, mother tongue or gender, are not necessarily sufficient to understand the increased diversity and its consequences. The book consists of a comprehensive introduction to the topic and thirteen chapters. In Finland, research on superdiversity is carried out especially in critical sociolinguistics and applied language studies, education, cultural studies, social sciences, and urban studies. Therefore, these disciplines are strongly represented in the collection, and the chapters approach a variety of topics including refugees’ mental health, experiences of multilingual families, the diversity of education and working life, discursive practices in social media, issues of urban planning and pro-asylum activism.

Kaikkia edellä kuvattuja artikkeleita yhdistää kasvatuspainotteisen muutoksen tarkastelun ohella metodologinen yhteys: kaikkien artikkelien aineisto on kerätty eläytymismenetelmää käyttäen. Teos osoittaa, kuinka monikäyttöisestä menetelmästä on kyse: se sopii yhtälailla lasten käsitysten tutkimiseen kuin kokonaisen organisaatiomuutoksen tarkasteluun. Teos esittelee paitsi menetelmällä tehtyjä käytännön tutkimuksia, tarjoaa myös käyttöohjeen menetelmään vasta tutustuvalle tutkijalle. Teos esittelee eläytymismenetelmän hyviä käytäntöjä sekä systemaattisen kirjallisuushaun eläytymismenetelmän käytöstä. "

    Description: This edited book is the third in a series of yearbooks that introduces the principles and applicability of the method of empathy-based stories. The book presents ten empirical studies which all use this method as a tool for data collection. In addition, the work examines the reliability of the method of empathy-based stories as a method and as part of qualitative research. The research articles in the book provide a current overview of the change in different work and operating environments. These environments include various educational institutions from elementary school to universities, social media, and human resource management. Studies examine the social inclusion, participation and agency of pupils, students, young people, and professionals, as well as the professional and ethical challenges of those working in new environments. The method of empathy-based stories is used to observe, for example, university students’ interpretations of involvement in the curriculum process, pupils' views on co-teaching, different forms of agency of young people who experience sexual harassment online, and the subjectivity of recruiters and the reasons for recruitment choices. Methodologically, the book focuses on the reliability of the method of empathy-based stories and considers the characteristics of the method among qualitative research methods. Reflecting on the research articles, the work discusses what kind of requirements and challenges the method poses for both the researcher and the respondents. The book provides guidelines for evaluating the reliability of the method of empathy-based stories, while participating also in a general discussion of the reliability, potential, and limitations of qualitative research. The book indicates how the method of empathy-based stories can be applied to a wide variety of research in different contexts. The strength of the method is its ability to utilize the respondents' imagination, thus providing the researchers with opportunities to find new perspectives and invent propositions. The book also provides practical examples of how the method can be used in research.
    Description: Kasvatusinstituutiot peruskoulusta yliopistoon ovat jatkuvan muutoksen keskiössä. Globaalit ja paikalliset yhteiskunnalliset muutokset, kuten esimerkiksi sosiaalisen median levittäytyminen osaksi arkea tai synnytyssairaaloiden keskittäminen, asettavat ammattilaisille uusia osaamisvaatimuksia sekä eettisiä haasteita. Kokoomateoksen kymmenessä tutkimusartikkelissa tarkastellaan eläytymismenetelmän avulla näiden muuttuvien ympäristöjen vaikutusta niissä toimivien ihmisten arkeen. Tutkimusartikkeleissa käsitellään esimerkiksi oppilaiden näkemyksiä yhteisopettajuudesta, kätilöiden osaamista, rekrytoijien ammattitaitoa sekä seksuaalista häirintää verkossa kohtaavien nuoren toimijuutta. Menetelmällisen painotuksensa ansiosta teosta voi hyödyntää myös eläytymismenetelmän soveltamistapoja kuvaavana oppikirjana. Teos on kolmas osa vuosikirjasarjassa, joka esittelee eläytymismenetelmän käyttöä tutkimusmenetelmänä. Teos osallistuu ajankohtaiseen keskusteluun laadullisen tutkimuksen luotettavuudesta hahmottamalla menetelmän käytettävyyden mahdollisuuksia ja rajoja sen metodologisten erityispiirteiden kautta.
