    Description: The energy demand of the world is foreseen to be increased due to the improvements on the living standard of the developing countries and the development of the global economy. The increase in sustainability of the energy supply must be considered as a must to avoid spoiling natural resources for the next human generations and more dramatic effects such as the so-called global atmospheric warming. The utilization of CO2-free energy sources, as in the case of renewables, is one of the most promising ways to attain such objectives. Nevertheless, the massive energy production with such energy sources are far from being practically feasible in the short-medium term and an innovative solution should be put into practice for the CO2-free exploitation of the huge fossil fuel resources already available. This general assumption is also applicable to any energy carrier such as Hydrogen or electricity. In this case, an analysis is done of the Hydrogen production processes and the discussion of the need to develop a CO2-free production scheme like methane cracking is shown.

    Description: Die Oberflächendatierung mittels in-situ produzierten kosmogenen Nukliden hat sich in den letzten Jahren in der Quartärgeologie zu einer wichtigen und häufig angewandten Methode entwickelt. Eine Anwendung ist die Altersbestimmung von erratischen Blöcken auf Moränen. Ein wesentliches Problem ist jedoch die Ermittlung einer eventuellen vorherigen Bestrahlungsperiode eines Blockes. Wir haben dies getestet, indem wir alle Seiten eines kürzlich exponierten Blockes beprobten und die Proben auf schon vorhandene Nuklide hin untersuchten. Der untersuchte Block liegt auf der rechten lateralen Moräne des jüngsten Gletschervorstoßes des Glacier de Tsijiore Nouve im Val d’Arolla in der Schweiz. Die holozänen Gletscherschwankungen wurden durch eine Kartierung rekonstruiert. Durch die ideale geometrische Verteilung von Akkumulations- und Ablationsgebiet reagiert dieser Gletscher schnell auf Änderungen der Massenbilanz. Daher ist er besonders gut für einen solchen Test geeignet. Der beprobte Block wurde 1991 durch den Gletscher abgelagert. Durch die Annahme, dass er vorher keiner kosmogenen Strahlung ausgesetzt war, sollte seine Nuklidkonzentration annähernd null sein. Die gemessenen 10Be/9Be Verhältnisse der fünf Proben waren innerhalb der Fehler nicht zu unterscheiden von Blindprobenwerten. Dies zeigt, dass die Proben keiner Vorbestrahlung ausgesetzt waren. Gemessene 21Ne/20Ne und 22Ne/20Ne Verhältnisse bei drei Proben sind ähnlich derer in der Luft, mit keiner nachweisbaren vorhergehenden kosmogenen Ne Anreicherung.

    Description: Little is known about the impact of school-based nutrition interventions on parents and other family members. This systematic review aims to explore the impact of school-based nutrition interventions on different parental/family outcomes, mainly dietary intake, nutrition knowledge, and health outcomes. PubMed, Web of Science, PsycINFO, EconLit, Cochrane Reviews, and Google Scholar were systematically searched for controlled trials or natural experiments measuring the impact of school-based nutrition interventions, with or without parental involvement, on parents/families of school children. Twenty-two studies met the inclusion criteria. Of which, 15 studies assessed the impact of school-based nutrition interventions on parental/family dietary intake, 10 on parental/family nutrition knowledge, and 2 on parental/family health outcomes. Inconsistent results were found for parental dietary intake with six studies reporting favorable effects. Most studies found improved parental nutrition knowledge. Positive impacts were seen by both studies that assessed the impact on a parental health outcome. Overall, we found that there is potential for school-based nutrition interventions to result in positive effects for parents, in particular for nutrition knowledge. More research is needed to assess the impacts of school-based nutrition interventions on parents and other family members and to assess important intervention characteristics in creating a positive impact.

    Description: 〈title xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"〉Abstract〈/title〉〈p xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xml:lang="en"〉We have performed in situ time‐of‐flight neutron diffraction experiments to examine the uptake of deuterium in iron monosulfide at pressures up to 11.4 GPa and temperatures to 1300 K. A D〈sub〉2〈/sub〉 fluid was formed in the experiments through the decomposition of ND〈sub〉3〈/sub〉BD〈sub〉3〈/sub〉, resulting in an oxygen fugacity of approximately 1.2 log units below the iron‐wüstite buffer. Deuterium positions and site occupancies were determined in FeS V, using Rietveld refinements of the powder neutron diffraction patterns. Our structural model indicates that two normally unoccupied sites in the 〈italic〉P〈/italic〉6〈sub〉3〈/sub〉/〈italic〉mmc〈/italic〉 FeS V structure, at Wyckoff positions 〈italic〉6h〈/italic〉 and 〈italic〉4f〈/italic〉, are partially occupied by D atoms, with the latter being more dominant. The deuterium content D〈sub〉x〈/sub〉 in FeSD〈sub〉X〈/sub〉 increases with both pressure and temperature over the experimental conditions explored, from 0.126 (14) at 2.3 GPa and 787 K to 1.20 (16) at 9.7 GPa and 1300 K. The unit‐cell volume expansion per deuterium atom is 1.53 ± 0.16 Å〈sup〉3〈/sup〉 at 6.9 GPa and 960 K, which is smaller than that determined for metallic iron phases at similar conditions. The variation in unit‐cell volume indicates that most deuterium is lost from FeS V upon temperature quenching at high‐pressures. By fitting the obtained FeS V deuterium site occupancies to a thermodynamic model, estimates for the hydrogen contents of iron monosulfide at conditions and oxygen fugacities consistent with the base of the cratonic lithosphere can be made. This results in values in the range of 1,700–2,700 ppm, which contribute to approximately 2–3 ppm hydrogen in the bulk mantle.〈/p〉

    Description: The world’s oceans cover the majority of the Earth’s surface and provide essential resources and habitats to sustain our planet’s life. Human activities both on land and at sea are placing enormous pressure on our oceans, affecting their wealth of biodiversity and their ability to provide key ecosystem functions and services. We are now coming to grips with the fact that the oceans and their resources are finite and exhaustible. The world’s oceans are recognised as a global commons in need of improved governance and management. Despite an existing international legislative framework and multiple initiatives that aim to sustainably use and manage our oceans, action and cooperation from all global states is needed to halt and reverse unsustainable trends before a tipping point is reached. The UN Agenda 2030 and its Sustainable Development Goal 14 on oceans marks a call for action on this front to address key ocean challenges. Within this framework, Germany promotes and engages in activities that build and expand ocean knowledge, that support the sustainable management of marine resources, and that encourage biodiversity protection. Despite some progress, much is needed to see the achievement of Goal 14. States should become proactive in supporting transformation measures for ocean sustainability. The integration of ocean concerns into existing international legislative frameworks and fora, such as the UNFCCC and FAO, could provide key operational starting points to strengthen the underlying sustainability architecture for ocean governance.

    Description: The southeastern Mediterranean Sea and the northern section of Egypt constitutes one of the most complex tectonic areas in the Mediterranean. This study is an attempt to achieve a better understanding of tectonics, and geodynamical processes along a complex tectonization region. These include crustal structure, thickness of sediments, transition between oceanic and continental crust and regional integrated model of the gravity field observed.     Description: Many scenarios for limiting global warming to 1.5°C assume planetary-scale carbon dioxide removal sufficient to exceed anthropogenic emissions, resulting in radiative forcing falling and temperatures stabilizing. However, such removal technology may prove unfeasible for technical, environmental, political, or economic reasons, resulting in continuing greenhouse gas emissions from hard-to-mitigate sectors. This may lead to constant concentration scenarios, where net anthropogenic emissions remain non-zero but small, and are roughly balanced by natural carbon sinks. Such a situation would keep atmospheric radiative forcing roughly constant. Fixed radiative forcing creates an equilibrium “committed” warming, captured in the concept of “equilibrium climate sensitivity.” This scenario is rarely analyzed as a potential extension to transient climate scenarios. Here, we aim to understand the planetary response to such fixed concentration commitments, with an emphasis on assessing the resulting likelihood of exceeding temperature thresholds that trigger climate tipping points. We explore transients followed by respective equilibrium committed warming initiated under low to high emission scenarios. We find that the likelihood of crossing the 1.5°C threshold and the 2.0°C threshold is 83% and 55%, respectively, if today's radiative forcing is maintained until achieving equilibrium global warming. Under the scenario that best matches current national commitments (RCP4.5), we estimate that in the transient stage, two tipping points will be crossed. If radiative forcing is then held fixed after the year 2100, a further six tipping point thresholds are crossed. Achieving a trajectory similar to RCP2.6 requires reaching net-zero emissions rapidly, which would greatly reduce the likelihood of tipping events.

    Description: While carbon taxes are generally seen as a rational policy response to climate change, knowledge about their performance from an ex-post perspective is still limited. This paper analyzes the emissions and cost impacts of the UK CPS, a carbon tax levied on all fossil-fired power plants. To overcome the problem of a missing control group, we propose a policy evaluation approach which leverages economic theory and machine learning for counterfactual prediction. Our results indicate that in the period 2013–2016 the CPS lowered emissions by 6.2 percent at an average cost of €18 per ton. We find substantial temporal heterogeneity in tax-induced impacts which stems from variation in relative fuel prices. An important implication for climate policy is that whether a higher carbon tax leads to higher emissions reductions and higher costs depends on relative fuel prices.

    Description: We examine how optimal renewable energy (RE) support policies need to be adjusted to account for carbon prices. We show theoretically and empirically that changing carbon prices requires adjusting RE subsidies due to two motives. First, RE premiums need to be reduced to reflect the carbon value embedded in the market price. Second, once a coal to gas switch occurs, RE premiums and feed-in tariffs need to be adjusted to account for changes in the marginal external benefit of RE. We use empirical estimations and numerical simulation models to quantify these effects for the United Kingdom. We show that the second effect is empirically small, whereas the first effect requires to completely phase-out RE premiums with increasing carbon prices. Finally, a fuel switch increases solar-induced abatement, whereas wind-induced abatement is rather invariant to a fuel switch. Yet, the differentiation of optimal subsidies between wind and solar power is modest.
