Several active phases with many larger eruptions followed. Even today, the Phlegraean Fields show many signs of activity and are thus the focus of many geoscientists in Europe. What if such eruptions were to repeat themselves? Experts now warn that nowhere in the world are modern societies well prepared for a truly big eruption.
