    Description: Bruno Latour is one of the leading figures in Social Sciences today, but his contributions are also widely recognised in the arts. His theories ‘flourished’ in the 1980s in the aftermath of the structuralism wave and generated new concepts and methodologies for the understanding of the social. In the past decade, Latour and his Actor-Network Theory (ANT) have gained popularity among researchers in the field of architecture. Latour for Architects is the first introduction to the key concepts and ideas of Bruno Latour that are relevant to architects. First, the book discusses critically how specific methods and insights from his philosophy can inspire new thinking in architecture and design pedagogy. En face de l’advaita de Śaṅkara, le système de Madhva, auquel cette étude est consacrée, représente l’extrême dualisme, dvaita.     Description: In publishing this book, an early version of which was first published under the auspices of the Academy of Athens, the French School at Athens highlights the research work of Aspasia Louvi-Kizi, an eminent specialist in the Frank and Byzantine Peloponnese, whose work reveals all of the complexity of the architectural forms, influences and models at work in the monuments of the medieval Byzantine city of Mystras. Out of all of the architecture created by the despotic couple formed by Manuel Cantacuzène (1349-1380) and his wife Isabelle de Lusignan, who were instrumental in turning Mystras into a centre of power, Aspasia Louvi-Kizi focuses on two of the city’s most iconic monuments, the monasteries of Peribleptos and Pantanassa, proposing a new history of their construction. Their architecture incorporates elements of Frank art, meaning western or gothic art, which were foreign to the local Byzantine tradition. The gothic aspect of Mystras’ architecture, as distinct from the Franco-Byzantine influences in the neighbouring crusader principality of Achaea, has more to do with Western art in Cyprus, and its introduction by Isabelle to the Peloponnese was to prove decisive. The Western elements that decorate the facades of clocks and towers, combined with the Byzantine features to constitute a concrete expression of the despotic couple’s pro-Western politics, in line with the imperial politics of Constantinople at the time. In the fragmented and multipolar world of the Eastern Mediterranean on the eve of the Ottoman conquest, this book highlights the role Mystras played as a centre of power in the region and, in doing so, contributes to a fresh take on the city as a whole. By continuing the international conversation about a renowned site, the French School at Athens shows its commitment to a multi-layered approach that reveals the complexity of the interactions at work in the history of the Greek world in transition.

    Description: The question of how to maintain the continuity of diplomacy while developing democracy without military intervention is an old and new issue. The challenge can be described as a dilemma between democracy and diplomatic coherence. This dilemma is not unique to the twenty-first century; it has been a constant challenge to the development of democracy. In non-Western countries, democratisation originated in the nineteenth century and has had many successes and failures. After the Russo-Japanese War, political parties began to take power in Japan. The best embodiment of diplomacy in Japan's emerging democracy—the development of parliamentary democracy and mass-based democracy—is Shidehara Kijūrō (1872–1951), who served as foreign minister from 1924 to 1927 and from 1929 to 1931, and was prime minister from 1945 to 1946. As a diplomat from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Shidehara had long grappled with the issue of how to ensure diplomatic coherence in modern Japan, which was becoming increasingly democratic. Although Shidehara succeeded to some extent in promoting diplomacy in cooperation with the US and the UK under party politics, the rise of the military after the Manchurian Incident forced him to retire for a period. However, after the Pacific War, Shidehara became prime minister of the US-occupied Japan and attempted to restore cooperative diplomacy under party politics. Shidehara came to the conclusion that the way to achieve both democracy and diplomatic coherence was through nonpartisan diplomacy towards peace. This book examines the tension between diplomacy and democracy, focusing on Shidehara’s life and exploring modern Japan’s footsteps. Shidehara was undoubtedly one of Japan’s most important diplomatic figures.

    Description: Le terme et l'idée de « philosophies de la nature » paraissent renvoyer, strictement et précisément, aux temps et aux œuvres de l'ère postkantienne en Allemagne. Du coup, le concept pourrait en sembler à première vue périmé. Tout se passe comme si l'on avait à faire ici à un chapitre de l'histoire des idées qui serait irrémédiablement antérieur à celui (censément plus récent et plus essentiel) des « philosophies de l'histoire ». Les quelque cinquante contributions réunies dans ce livre tentent de faire ressortir, au contraire, la très grande actualité d'une étude portant sur les « philosophies de la nature ». - L'histoire, au demeurant, est singulièrement mise en question en ces dernières années du XXe siècle, - ce qui met en cause la philosophie de l'histoire en général et ses différentes versions, et du coup encore leur rapport aux philosophies de la nature. En outre, le développement des sciences de la nature ne cesse aujourd'hui de poser (et pas seulement en les reposant) nombre de problèmes philosophiques, tant pratiques que théoriques. La première journée, celle du 20 mars 1994, sous la responsabilité de Paolo Quintili, rassemblait les contributions portant sur la période « de la Renaissance à l'âge classique ». La deuxième, sous la responsabilité de Françoise Dastur, était consacrée le 27 mars aux contributions centrées sur « Kant et l'idéalisme allemand ». C'est sur « Le XIXe siècle » en général qu'a porté la troisième journée, celle du 27 novembre 1994, placée sous la responsabilité d'Hélène Politis. La dernière, sous la responsabilité de Jacques Moutaux, abordait enfin le 4 décembre un large ensemble de questions posées par « Les philosophies de la nature aujourd'hui ».

Le but est de repérer, d’analyser et d’étudier la manière dont les normes statutaires se sont diffusées – ou pas –, ont été appliquées – ou pas – dans les pratiques politiques, économiques et sociales de la commune : comment ont-elles été validées, reproduites, conservées, diffusées ? Outlining the relations between the state and the different Churches (confessions) in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Holy Roman Empire of Germany, and the Northern Netherlands serves to highlight the specificity of Northern Netherlands serves to highlight the specificity of «free» (non-absolutist) composite states, where the particularly complex process of defining the raison d’etat determined the level of religious toleration that was politically feasible and socially acceptable.

Non sans conséquences importantes pour la philosophie elle-même. Car l’incertitude, autre nom de la neutralité, ou de l’anonymat, caractérise aussi bien « l’espace littéraire ». Cette lecture de Descartes, qui cite Blanchot, Deleuze, Foucault, mais fait aussi songer, quand l’Incertain se fait Barbare ou Arpenteur, au Michaux de Plume, ouvre à la pensée un champ illimité, vertigineux, dans lequel la neutralité, virtuellement universelle, est susceptible d’affecter des textes de tous ordres, sans souci d’aucune autorité. L’incertitude n’est pas seulement une hypothèse paradoxale formulée à propos du philosophe réputé le plus clair et le plus assuré ; elle est peut-être la condition de toute pensée.

    Description: In 2015, the United Nations decided to establish the goal of achieving “zero hunger” in the world by 2030 through “outcome targets” such as eliminating hunger and improving access to food, ending all forms of malnutrition, promoting sustainable and resilient agriculture, and maintaining genetic diversity in food production. As a result of this decision, strategies are under way in different countries around the world in the form of political, academic, development, and non-governmental organization projects and programs. Five years later, these strategies have certainly generated results that need to be documented and analyzed so as to answer the following questions: what are the progress and success stories in terms of policies, innovations, technologies, and approaches to reach the zero hunger goal? What are the constraints and mitigation strategies? Are we really in a phase of transition towards the zero hunger goal? What new directions do we need to consider to achieve this goal, particularly in the context of the current COVID-19 pandemic, which affects all sectors of development around the world? This book volume will be published within MDPI’s new open access book series entitled “Transitioning to Sustainability”. It welcomes contributions of empirical research, position pieces, and presentations of important research programs or stakeholder initiatives that cover any of the four “outcome targets” of the zero hunger goal. The contributions may come from academics, students, and policy makers of any region in the world and may be related to specific disciplines or be inter and/or transdisciplinary. They may cover areas including but not limited to sustainable improvement of food production, implementing sustainable food and farming systems, improving access to food, limiting malnutrition, limiting food loss and food waste and, finally, global analyses of the challenges of reaching zero hunger in relation to other sustainable development goals as well as success stories on projects, programmes or government initiatives. Transitioning to Zero Hunger is part of MDPI's new Open Access book series Transitioning to Sustainability. With this series, MDPI pursues environmentally and socially relevant research which contributes to efforts toward a sustainable world. Transitioning to Sustainability aims to add to the conversation about regional and global sustainable development according to the 17 SDGs. Set to be published in 2020/2021, the book series is intended to reach beyond disciplinary, even academic boundaries.

    Description: In 2020-2022, much of the world was at risk for catching COVID-19. This reprint, “Crimmigration in the Age of COVID-19,” contributes to understanding immigration during the pandemic. It engages a cross-national and interdisciplinary case-study approach to show how countries carved out exceptions to public health protocols for migrants. In the immigration context a variety of governments weaponized public health protocols to criminalize and exclude migrants. The Trump Administration sadistically misplayed the pandemic at almost every turn. Trump came to power on the backs of migrants, referring to them as murderers and rapists. The intersection of Trump’s COVID-19 and migration policies carved out space for the exceptional dehumanization of migrants in 2020-21. This reprint documents the weaponization of public through crimmigration. Crimmigration is the criminalization of migration and migrants via state-of-the-art surveillance and militarized technologies. During the worst of COVID-19, crimmigration strategies--mandatory detention and harsh exclusions— exacerbated the risk of transmission among migrants. Policies not migrants were to blame here. The ostensibly public health related Title42 actually pushed migrants, already at great risk, into unregulated shantytowns controlled by Mexican drug cartels. Additionally, migrants contended with detention facilities, medium security prisons, that functioned as Petrie dishes for the disease. We hope this reprint contributes to understanding the intersection of public health and crimmigration, and border penologies during these exceptional times.

    Description: Mikel Dufrenne a croisé les principales problématiques qui ont traversé la seconde moitié du xxe siècle. La réception de son œuvre pose question : encensée dans les années 1950, elle s’est progressivement réduite en France, notamment vers les années 1970, alors qu’elle fait l’objet aujourd’hui d’un regain d’intérêt. L’étude entend montrer que de telles fluctuations sont liées au malentendu qui fait de Dufrenne l’auteur d’un seul livre, la Phénoménologie de l’expérience esthétique,qui à lui seul ne rend pas compte de l’originalité de sa pensée. Lire Dufrenne, c’est découvrir l’importance de sa réflexion éthique et politique et la stabilité d’une pensée dédiée à la défense des valeurs de « l’humain » et de « l’homme ». C’est aussi se livrer au plaisir de l’élaboration de fictions philosophiques répondant à la tentation de rationaliser une vision du monde par le biais d’une philosophie de la Nature relayée par la notion d’a priori. L’unité de cette œuvre réside dans l’hypothèse d’une Nature artiste que le philosophe veut penser dans le cadre d’une philosophie non théologique.

    Description: This chapter will, first, reconstructs Axel Honneth’s account of the significance of recognition in his book The Struggle for Recognition and track some of the unresolved tensions in it and their role in Honneth’s subsequent work. The final part of the chapter focusses on Honneth’s more recent monograph The Freedom’s Right, in which an oscillation of his position between universalism and historicism or relativism pauses in the latter end. This limits the applicability of the theory outside the confines of Europe or the West. It turns out that the reconstruction and immanent critique of Honneth’s work, however, supports recognition-theoretical universalism.

    Description: Au début du siècle dernier, le sultan du Maroc vient de signer un traité qui place désormais son pays sous le protectorat de la France (30 mars 1912). À l’ombre du maréchal Lyautey, un sultan de substitution, totalement soumis aux nouveaux maîtres français, a été proclamé. Cependant, nombreux sont ceux qui, au Maroc, refusent le fait accompli et se révoltent face à la mainmise étrangère sur le pays. Ainsi, dans le Sud marocain, Moulay Ahmed el Hiba, fils d’un marabout ouest-saharien (Ma el Aïnin), se fait proclamer sultan du Jihad en 1912 ; une première fois à Tiznit, la seconde à Marrakech. Ces événements ont donné naissance à un mouvement qui pendant plus de vingt ans (1912-1934) symbolisera pour ces populations berbères et ouest-sahariennes la résistance à l’avancée inéluctable des troupes coloniales françaises et espagnoles. Fondée sur une analyse croisée d’archives inédites, aussi bien françaises que marocaines, l’auteur fait la lumière sur un événement fondateur de la conquête coloniale du Maroc. Mythifiée, récupérée ou occultée, la figure fondatrice du mouvement hibiste est encore aujourd’hui le sujet d’un conflit mémoriel ayant pour objet l’Ouest saharien.

Si sa démarche phénoménologique héritée de Husserl le conduit immanquablement à s’interroger sur la place singulière que l’objet esthétique occupe dans notre monde, son projet est plus ambitieux. L’attention que Mikel Dufrenne porte aux différents arts (les arts plastiques, la musique, la poésie) ainsi qu’à la richesse des expériences esthétiques vécues, décrites et commentées, lui permet en effet de viser un but supérieur : non seulement redéfinir et réorganiser la phénoménologie autour de la question de l’art, mais faire de l’œuvre ce qui permet de remonter vers un principe originaire, la Nature, qui fonde toute création. Cette tâche singulière et méconnue méritait bien un effort philosophique collectif dont le présent ouvrage est le fruit.

    Description: The idea of improvisation, broadly defined, has been integral to our imagination of the medieval musical past. It can be related to many elements of production: to the act of un-notated creation; to the manipulation and amplification of notated materials; to our observance of rigid rules and formulae; or to spontaneous freedom. Likely a product of the Carolingian Renaissance, this is the first medieval music treatise to address an aspect of chant performance that does not only relate to a memorized repertoire, but includes an unwritten practice of extemporizing an accompanying voice to a pre-given melody. The art of “coloration” or the ornamentation of a line, whether polyphonic or monophonic, had been an integral part of extemporization since at least the time of the Ad organum faciendum treatises. When planning author's ontological inquiries, the author's would do well to remember the possible existence of creativity that is not inspired, or ephemerality that is not performer- or expression-centered.

    Description: Reflections on God, Christ and cosmos in the writings of Paul and the Pauline School show that these authors were familiar with important notions from Graeco-Roman cosmology and theology. George van Kooten comes to the conclusion that they might even have adopted a way of thinking in which Judaism and Graeco-Roman cosmology were forged into a new synthesis, and Christ was viewed as a cosmic god. In this development, Paul and the authors of the Pauline School took up various positions which were all represented in contemporary discussions about God and cosmos in the philosophical schools. Against this background this study also sheds new light on the specific relationship between Colossians and Ephesians.

    Description: August Ludwig Hülsen (1765-1809) was a contributor to the emergence of German idealism. Notwithstanding, his name and works are up to this day almost entirely unknown to most scholars in the field. This monograph discusses the historical importance of Hülsen's Prüfung der von der Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin aufgestellten Preisfrage: Was hat die Metaphysik seit Leibniz und Wolf für Progressen gemacht? (1796), his only book, for the emergence of German idealism, especially the thought of Reinhold and Fichte during the 1790's. The usual way of focusing on the Wissenschaftslehre, and hence, on the emergence of German idealism, is as a “response” of Fichte to the skeptical objections of Schulze-Aenesidemus to Reinhold's early Elementarphilosophie. This “response”, as Fichte himself recognized in 1798, was far from complete. Hülsen, a Fichtean thinker, restructured and regrounded those aspects of Reinhold's system that Fichte left intact: in particular, Reinhold's almost forgotten approach to the rational history of philosophy. In 1797, Hülsen's achievement prompted Fichte's recommendation of Hülsen's book in Annalen des philosophischen Tons as an introduction to his Wissenschaftslehre. This indicates that Fichte recognized Hülsen as a partner in the development of his incomplete system. Accordingly, the historical importance of Hülsen's book is that it completed Fichte's attempt to overcome Reinhold's standpoint and contributed to the emergence of German idealism.

Cet ouvrage veut contribuer à la connaissance, encore trop peu développée en France, de cette romancière, par le biais d’une figure littéraire qui entretient un rapport fort à la littérature en général et au romantisme en particulier. Il s’agira d’étudier les modalités de la représentation du baiser dans les sept romans que Mary Shelley produisit entre 1818 et 1837. Figure de la rencontre de deux subjectivités, le baiser se décline sur un mode sensible, mythique et philosophique chez la romancière. Au terme de ce parcours, c’est une figure bien particulière de l’écrivain qui sera (re)découverte.

Aux douze contributions primitives, qui traitent de F. Schleiermacher, F. Schlegel, W. von Humboldt, A. Boeckh et de G. Droysen, deux nouveaux textes ont été ajoutés, l’un, en amont, sur Kant, l’autre, en aval, sur W. Dilthey. Denis Thouard a également écrit une postface qui replace l’ensemble des contributions dans le cadre de la discussion actuelle, et fournit ainsi au lecteur la possibilité de s’y orienter. La conviction présidant à cette collection d’études est double : d’une part, qu’il existe bien entre l’herméneutique du xviie siècle et le nouveau paradigme herméneutique une discontinuité fondamentale, d’autre part, que les notions de « méthode » et d’« objectivation », mobilisées par H.-G.     Description: La publication en 2013 d'une version reconstruite du texte de Kracauer Die totalitäre Propaganda (1937-1938) a renouvelé la perception que l’on pouvait avoir de cette dimension de son œuvre et de son apport à une « théorie critique de la propagande ». La réflexion sur la propagande s’inscrit dans le contexte plus vaste de l’élaboration par les exilés allemands, au tournant des années 1930-1940, d’une grille de lecture du national-socialisme, vu comme une pathologie de la modernité, ainsi que dans celui des grands projets de recherches américains sur la propagande nazie (auxquels Adorno et Kracauer ont été associés). Au sein de la nébuleuse de la « Théorie critique » Kracauer exprime, comme Benjamin, un point de vue à certains égards dissonant. À rebours d’une approche qui insiste surtout sur la continuité entre capitalisme et nazisme, il se montre particulièrement sensible à la séduction esthétique du fascisme, et à sa mise en scène d’une réalité de substitution, qui est selon lui l’expression d’une fuite en avant nihiliste : ses analyses concrètes ne portent pas tant sur les contenus du message que sur le langage même de la propagande, et la vision de la société et de l’histoire qu’elle véhicule, dans sa forme même. Le débat complexe qui se développe à cette époque entre Adorno, Benjamin et Kracauer met notamment en œuvre les catégories de « fétichisme » (Adorno), de « fantasmagorie » et d’« esthétisation du politique » (Benjamin), d’« apparence » et de « pseudo-réalité » (Kracauer). Il présente en premier lieu un intérêt historique, en tant que l’analyse du nazisme constitue pour le projet d’une théorie critique une mise à l’épreuve, qui suscite de vifs débats internes et aboutit chez Adorno et Horkheimer, dans la Dialectique de la raison (1944-1947), à une reformulation de ce projet. Mais dans un contexte aujourd’hui bien différent, les thèmes qui sont débattus entre ces protagonistes, comme celui de la dérive autoritaire du libéralisme, des manipulations de masse, de la construction médiatique du réel n’ont rien perdu de leur actualité.

    Description: “Chapter 6” systematizes and analyzes Kierkegaard’s insightful remarks on human affectivity in relation to moral emotions, body, contagion, and collectivity. Following a brief outline of the conceptualization of affects and human affectivity from Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Spinoza, Tomkins, and Massumi, the first part zooms in on empathy and sympathy in two important precursors of Kierkegaard, namely David Hume and Adam Smith. The second part argues for Kierkegaard’s distinctively affective reading of admiration, which I locate in its being fundamentally linked with other emotions such as envy, but also in its being oriented toward the mediocre and base, having a limited motivational capacity, and being highly contagious. Affective admiration is then related to the contemporary discussion on moral exemplars, posing a challenge to the view of the epistemological and moral trustworthiness of admiration in moral exemplarity espoused primarily by Linda Zagzebski. The third part centers on the affective character of Kierkegaard’s crowd psychology. Therein I examine his critical remarks on human collectivity, focusing on such key concepts from his social and political philosophy as “crowd” and “the public.” Reading his philosophy alongside two French theorists of mass society, Gabriel Tarde and René Girard, I draw out Kierkegaard’s great interest in such mimetic terms as magnetism, fascination, somnambulism, scapegoating, and violence.

    Description: From Sung times, and throughout the Ming period, one of the dominant philosophies of China had been a dualistic rationalism thought to be firmly grounded on the classics. Tai Chen (1723-1777) was a scholar and philosopher during the Ch'ing period- a time when China produced few philosophic thinkers. He was the greatest of these, and his views are embodied chiefly in Yuan Shan and in Meng Tzu txu-yi shu-cheng. In place of the prevailing Sung dualism, Tai Chen propounded a rationalistic monism seldom before insinuated in a Chinese philosophy. He declines to accept current dogmas and preferred to seek his own truths. His commentaries opposed the time-honored interpretations of Chu Hsi, and he discredited them on purely philosophical grounds. But with few disciples to carry on his teachings, he was virtually forgotten or ignored in China for more than a hundred years after his death. It was not until early in the present century- with China under the pressures of Western aggression and internal disorders-that Tai Chen's nearness to Western thought was rediscovered and his important role in the history of philosophy recognized. Curiously, this first of China's Western-oriented philosophers even today remains little known in the West and his major writings largely untranslated.

    Description: This chapter examines the writings of the renowned late-eighteenth-century Moroccan ambassador Ibn Uthmân Al-Meknassî, the first known traveller from his country to leave an account of European quarantine as experienced during his two diplomatic missions in Spain’s Ceuta (1779) and Malta’s Valletta (1782). It shows that quarantine, on the one hand, acted as a marker of otherness by which Ibn Othman was identified as a Muslim, though this was not a uniform process, owing to the fact that significant differences existed in the degree of alterity experienced in Spain and Malta, and indeed other parts of the Mediterranean. The subjective opinion on quarantine, on the other hand, was also one of the means through which Ibn Uthmân situated himself within Makhzen (Moroccan government) elites at a time when a division between those who declared themselves in favour of European-style modernisation and those who advocated a rejection of European novelties was already visible.

    Description: "An Equal Burden forms the first scholarly study of the Army Medical Services in the First World War to focus on the roles and experiences of the men of the ranks of the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC). These men, through their work as stretcher bearers and orderlies, provided a range of labour, both physical and emotional, in aid of the sick and wounded. They were not professional medical caregivers, yet were called upon to provide medical care, however rudimentary; they served in uniform, under military discipline, yet were forbidden, as non-combatants, from carrying weapons. Their service as men in wartime, was thus unique. Structured both chronologically and thematically, this study examines both the work that RAMC rankers undertook and its importance to the running of the chain of medical evacuation. It additionally explores the gendered status of these men within the medical, military and cultural hierarchies of a society engaged in total war, locating their service within the context of that of doctors, female nurses and combatant servicemen. Through close readings of official documents, personal papers, and cultural representations, both verbal and visual, it argues that the ranks of the RAMC formed a space in which non-commissioned servicemen, through their many roles, defined and redefined medical caregiving as men’s work in wartime."

    Description: Aux xvie et xviie siècles, l’ordre européen était parfois menacé par des crises d’origine régionale. Ces désordres venaient des initiatives scandaleuses d’acteurs politiques habituellement peu présents sur la scène internationale (municipalités, institutions provinciales, seigneurs locaux). Pour résoudre des conflits internes, parfois contre leur propre souverain, ces acteurs n’hésitaient pas à appeler des puissances étrangères à leur secours, dans des logiques de solidarités politico-religieuses internationales. Les « affaires de Provence» (1580-1598) permettent de comprendre le fonctionnement de ce type de crises. Au plus fort des guerres de Religion en France, les catholiques de Provence appelèrent à leur secours le duc de Savoie, le grand-duc de Toscane, les papes et le roi d’Espagne. Parce que la Provence avait une position stratégique entre Barcelone et Gênes, d’autres puissances intervinrent à leur tour: l’Angleterre, l’Empire ottoman, le duché de Lorraine et la République de Venise. À partir d’une étude minutieuse des événements, ce livre mène une réflexion approfondie sur les défis stratégiques, intellectuels et rhétoriques d’une situation vécue à l’époque comme un désordre international, en raison de la marge de manœuvre subversive acquise par des acteurs ordinairement faibles.

    Description: On 24 May 1966, eight hundred men of the 5th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment, landed at Nui Dat, in Viet Cong territory. For the next 12 months they were faced with the task of restoring peace, civil law and regular commerce to the Vietnamese of Phuoc Tuy province. This book is a detailed record of those months in the monsoon jungles—of the problems that were faced and the solutions that were found. Captain O’Neill’s position as battalion intelligence officer enabled him to view the war from the standpoint of the battalion as a whole. However, he does not omit description of personal feelings—towards the Viet Cong, the jungle environment and the Vietnamese people, as well as the other Allied forces involved in the war. Most of the book was written on the spot in Vietnam. On operations or at Battalion Headquarters, Captain O’Neill jotted down details of the war against the Viet Cong, putting the events of each day in order, often in the small hours of the following morning. Thus not only is this a factual account of the 5th Battalion’s activities over the year; it is also a vivid and compelling picture of the war in Vietnam from the soldier’s point of view.

Le jeune philosophe y consigne, sur près de quinze ans et plus de 4500 pages, des réflexions qu’il nomme « de philosophie variée et de belle littérature ». Et en effet, c’est bien la variété, et même la plus étonnante bigarrure qui caractérisent ce monumental magasin d’écriture : bigarrure des matières brassées (métaphysique, théologie, politique, morale, esthétique) et bigarrure des formes (aphorisme, anecdote, note érudite, essai). Le Zibaldone apparaît donc tout d’abord comme un flux discontinu et disparate de pensée. Cependant, Leopardi n’entend pas y exposer une rhapsodie de vérités isolées et fragmentaires mais un authentique système philosophique. « Il mio sistema » : tels sont les premiers mots du cri léopardien, de son exigence méthodologique et ontologique. Manquer d’esprit de système c’est manquer d’ordre, et c’est surtout manquer l’essence même du réel, de la nature en tant que totalité, une nature qu’il ne saurait concevoir autrement, elle aussi, que comme un système et un ordre. Quel est donc l’ordre du système léopardien ? Et dans quelle mesure celui-ci épouse-t-il l’ordre de la nature ? Quel est leur fondement commun ? Répondre à ces questions revient à montrer en quoi cette totalité mouvante, ouverte et rhizomatique qu’est le Zibaldone est le lieu le plus à même d’accueillir une pensée placée devant l’urgence de statuer sur les guises de l’existence et de la contradiction.

Husserl (1859-1938) et les approches scientifiques contemporaines de la cognition, envisagées dans toute leur diversité disciplinaire, la multiplicité de leurs niveaux d’explication et la variété de leurs conflits d’hypothèses. Le souci premier des recherches qu’il rassemble n’est donc pas de s’engager dans une nouvelle exégèse de la phénoménologie husserlienne, quoique le rôle de ce travail interprétatif et critique ne soit aucunement sous-estimé, mais bien plutôt de déterminer dans quelle mesure celle-ci peut contribuer à la quête actuelle d’une explication naturaliste des phénomènes cognitifs, en lui apportant des compléments sur certains points ou en la soumettant à la critique sur d’autres. Mais au-delà, leur ambition est aussi de mesurer la pertinence de la recherche cognitive contemporaine pour la phénoménologie husserlienne elle-même, en évaluant en quoi elle est susceptible d’imprimer à cette dernière un nouveau tournant. Parce qu'aucun ouvrage ne saurait prétendre embrasser les multiples facettes de cette double interrogation, les contributions ici rassemblées l’abordent principalement sous l’angle de la question de la naturalisation.     Description: Cake products with highly acceptable flavor and mouthfeel are not always successful in the marketplace. Sales of identical cake products sold in two different bakery shops often differ. Patrons’ choices of specific cake items differ depending on menu designs at restaurants. Such examples suggest that consumer behavior related to eating, preparing, or purchasing foods and beverages is typically complex, dynamic, and sensitive to environmental cues surrounding them. The nine original research articles and two systematic review articles addressed in this book provide recent informative and insightful findings on how sensory cues related to eating/drinking environmental contexts can serve as “sensory nudges” that induce healthy eating and drinking along with consumer satisfaction.

    Description: Jacques-Nicolas Billaud-Varenne (1756-1819) demeure un méconnu de l’historiographie révolutionnaire. En rééditant les Principes régénérateurs du systême social, opuscule publié en pluviôse an III (janvier-février 1795), peu de temps avant la déportation de l’auteur à Cayenne, on souhaite ici éclairer un moment essentiel dans l’élaboration de la « synthèse républicaine ». C’est aussi « une nouvelle manière d’écrire l’histoire de la Révolution française » (Michel Vovelle). Un retour critique au texte met en lumière, d’une part, l’acculturation d’un révolutionnaire de premier plan, d’autre part, les thèmes récurrents du discours jacobin. L’essai de Billaud-Varenne est, en effet, une expression du projet montagnard d’« institutions civiles ». Projet d’un lien social pour « mettre en action la morale » et « la donner pour base à la politique », espérance d’un nouvel espace public de réciprocité fraternelle où la citoyenneté compte au rang des droits naturels. Ainsi se dévoile une philosophie de la Révolution française qui n’est pas sans rapport avec la pensée allemande contemporaine de l’événement révolutionnaire.

It is a complex, positive phenomenon that occurs in language, in music, and in mime. Bernard P. Dauenhauer offers an original, comprehensive, and explicitly phenomenological analysis of silence in all its aspects.     Description: « Penser ma mort c’est aussi bien penser moi sans le monde que le monde sans moi, c’est penser à la rupture d’un rapport. Où l’angoisse commence c’est quand, au sentiment du monde comme réalité empirique, nous substituons une présence du monde en nous, qui serait le temps... Je n’étais pas plus satisfait du monde mais du moins je me sentais en sécurité dans un monde qui ne me satisfaisait pas. Ce sont ces deux conditions qui ont pu faire place en moi à l’angoisse de la mort : celle de disparaître non au monde (empiriquement) mais celle de disparaître au sens absolu... ». Par toutes sortes de détours ce texte ramène à un centre, la distinction entre la peur de mourir qui concerne le texte de la vie, et l’angoisse devant la mort, qui elle ne concerne « rien ». L’auteur, à qui le genre même du Journal permet de se contredire et dans ces contradictions mêmes de retrouver toujours les mêmes évidences, s’appuie sur trois refuges, la réflexion bouddhique (et indienne), celle d’Epicure, la pensée christique (le « il faut qu’il vive »). Des analyses particulières s’entremêlent, celle du suicide (« le suicide s’explique parce que l’angoisse de la mort ne peut contrebalancer le dégoût de la vie, sans quoi il n’y aurait pas de suicide »), la peine de mort, le couple... Aux trois points d’appui qui reviennent explicitement — érotisme, travail, art — le quatrième que l’auteur ne nomme pas, l’ami mort, est peut-être le plus présent. Le livre s’achève par un bref rappel de réflexions sur la mort, depuis la philosophie antique et celle de la Renaissance (Montaigne), puis Descartes, Pascal, Schopenhauer, des modernes enfin, de Bergson, Simmel, Heidegger à Jean-Paul Sartre et Paul Ricoeur ; enfin quatre littérateurs, Alain, Paul Valéry, Paul Léautaud et André Malraux.

    Description: This chapter explores the transmission of tales of the supernatural during the very long eighteenth century (between c.1660 and c.1832). A genre of publications on this subject which have not been studied are those anthologies of supposedly true stories, usually relating to named people and places and sometimes dated, often each numbered separately, with relatively little discussion of their authenticity or significance, beyond perhaps a brief preface defending the reality of the world of spirits. A series of entrepreneurial publishers, mostly operating from Paternoster Row in London, experimented with anthologising these stories in varied combinations. Any attempt to analyse the stories must begin by unravelling the publishing history by which they were transmitted and (not fully studied here) modified and retold, as well as re-interpreted.

Fragmenter l’unité apparente de chaque singularité pour faire remonter sa propre étrangeté : c’est à cet instant précis peut-être que le mouvement de la communauté prend tout son sens, quand il résiste à l’uniforme. Commun, communion, communisme, communauté, communautaire, communautarisme… le terme de communauté est complexe. Utilisé à tort et à travers il perd son sens. Qu’est-ce qu’une communauté finalement ? Comment distinguer la communauté du communautarisme et comment éviter de réduire la communauté au communautaire ou l’identité à l’identitaire ? « Qu’est-ce donc qui nous manque ? », pour reprendre la question de Maître Eckhart.     Description: Les relations entre les États-Unis et l’Unesco ont toujours été complexes comme le démontre l’étude des 20 premières années de celles-ci. Lors de la création de l’Unesco quelques Américains ont énormément travaillé pour que cette Institution spécialisée des Nations- Unis existe. Leur rôle et leur apport sont ici soigneusement mis en évidence. Or, les premières déceptions arrivent rapidement car, à tort, du côté de Washington, on espérait voir l’Organisation participer efficacement à la lutte contre le communisme. Néanmoins, à la fin des années 1950, l’Unesco connaît un regain de faveur auprès du gouvernement américain. Et si l’hégémonie financière américaine à l’Unesco n’a jamais fait de doute, sa domination politique est mise en cause dès les premières années. Les États-Unis vont quitter l’Unesco en 1984, quand la première génération d’Américains, fondateurs de l’Unesco et fidèles malgré les déceptions a, depuis longtemps, quitté la scène politique.     Description: On ne connaît aucun écrit de Confucius, ses aphorismes ayant été recueillis sous la forme d’« Entretiens » par ses disciples. Néanmoins, depuis deux millénaires et demi les enseignements du philosophe ont non seulement imprégné la civilisation chinoise et les cultures d’Extrême-Orient, mais ont aussi inspiré philosophes et penseurs en Occident. Cet ouvrage de Herbert Fingarette, dont l’impact à sa publication en 1972 a été immédiat et majeur dans le monde anglophone, était attendu de longue date par le public francophone. Il permet d’accéder à l’enseignement de Confucius de façon simple et directe, puisque les idées du célèbre philosophe y sont essentiellement abordées par le biais de ses paroles rapportées par ses disciples, les dépouillant de toute interprétation anachronique ou encombrante. Selon Fingarette, Confucius préserve le caractère sacré du rite, mais enraciné dans la sacralité de l’existence humaine elle-même, et en le dégageant de sa gangue religieuse. La présentation et les commentaires de Charles Le Blanc viennent enrichir le texte en situant Herbert Fingarette dans le contexte général des études confucéennes et orientales, soulignant ainsi son actualité et sa profonde originalité.

    Description: Si l’histoire traditionnelle de l’hérésie au Moyen Âge s’est longtemps confondue avec celle des exclus de la société, l’approche récente se focalise davantage sur les diverses autorités qui, au coeur du pouvoir, élaborèrent la norme religieuse : l’hérésie n’existe que parce que l’orthodoxie en a d’abord décidé. Il reste que, loin de se présenter comme une essence immuable, elle s’impose tout au long du Moyen Âge comme un concept et une qualification d’une très grande plasticité. L’extension progressive du domaine de l’hérésie à de nombreuses formes de dissidence finit par lui assurer le statut d’un crime englobant. Cette enquête collective repose sur la conviction que c’est encore en se situant aux marges de l’hérésie, au contact d’activités répréhensibles voisines, telles que l’usure, la sorcellerie ou encore la rébellion politique, que l’on peut le mieux saisir les principes et les mécanismes de la fabrique de l’hérésie.

Quelles sont les raisons qui expliquent que cette bataille – une parmi tant d’autres qui ont émaillé les conflits du xxe siècle – a d’emblée revêtu une dimension historique pour les contemporains ? Pourquoi précisément cette opération militaire est-elle désormais régulièrement commémorée par autant de chefs d’État sous le regard des télévisions du monde entier ? Comment expliquer le statut si particulier acquis par cet événement au fil des décennies, jusqu’au projet d’inscription des plages du Débarquement au patrimoine de l’Unesco ? En revenant à la dramatisation des enjeux d’une bataille annoncée près de quatre années à l’avance, mais aussi aux ressorts politiques, idéologiques, économiques et culturels qui ont contribué à transcender l’événement en épopée, cet ouvrage s’interroge sur la quête d’identité de chacun des acteurs nationaux à travers l’évolution de leur mémoire. Ainsi peut-on mieux comprendre la surprenante transformation de l’épisode guerrier en symbole universel de paix et de liberté.

The present study links the reproach of sexual misconduct as a political argument in medieval discourse to medieval ideas about royalty and government, opening new perspectives of a cultural history of politics in the Later Middle Ages.
    Description: Die politische Rolle des Favoriten und die Art seiner Beziehung zum König sind in der Forschung oft nicht klar gesehen worden, da in den Diskursen des frühen und späten Mittelalters die besondere Nähe zum Herrscher regelmäßig in der Sprache der Liebe und in Gesten der körperlichen Nähe und Intimität zum Ausdruck kam. So entstand der Eindruck, dass der König aus homosexueller Neigung seinem Günstling übermäßigen Einfluss gewährte – auf Kosten der Barone, die ebenfalls einen Anteil an der Macht beanspruchten. In dieser Studie wird die Figur des Favoriten neu betrachtet und in ihrer Bedeutung über den Einzelfall hinaus verständlich gemacht. Sie setzt den Vorwurf sexuellen Fehlverhaltens als politisches Argument in Bezug zur Entwicklung der Vorstellung von Königtum und Herrschaft und eröffnet so neue Perspektiven einer Kulturgeschichte des Politischen im Spätmittelalter.

Ainsi, l’impression est née que le roi, par inclination homosexuelle, accordait une influence excessive à son favori – aux dépens des barons, qui revendiquaient, eux aussi, une part du pouvoir. Dans l’esprit d’une »histoire culturelle de la politique«, le présent ouvrage reconsidère la figure du favori, la rend compréhensible et tangible dans sa signification au-delà du cas individuel. Il met en évidence le caractère constructif des modèles modernes de perception du désir sexuel et souligne l’importance de l’inconduite sexuelle comme argument politique dans le discours médiéval.

Les deux textes rassemblés ici, l’un une proposition, l’autre une critique, semblent paradigmatiques des débats possibles lorsqu’il est question des sciences de l’homme. Pour Albert Piette l’anthropologie doit être refondée et adopter un nouveau paradigme : l’étude des volumes humains en train d’exister. Quant à Jean-Michel Salanskis, il tente de montrer que l’opération d’objectivation de l’humain n’est ni heureuse ni facile. Bien que chaque démarche ait le sentiment de totaliser l’humain et de couvrir tout le champ de sa manifestation, chacune emprunte à l’autre et d’ailleurs, chacune a sa façon de se révéler paradoxale.

    Description: « Zone tribale du Nord-Yémen », « zone tribale de l’Ouest pakistanais », voilà bien des expressions qui reviennent dans l’actualité pour désigner des régions de confins farouchement réfractaires à l’imposition d’un nouvel ordre politique. Dès la fin du XIXe et au début du XXe siècle, les États européens, emportés dans leur mouvement d’expansion outre-mer, vinrent buter, en périphérie, sur ce type d’espace en quelque sorte interstitiel des relations internationales contemporaines. Dans ces zones où les agents traditionnels de la vie diplomatique pénétraient peu, ou mal, une expertise particulière, celle du renseignement et des agences de sécurité, parut s’imposer. Lorsque la France coloniale s’implante en Syrie et au Liban, au lendemain de la Première Guerre mondiale, elle doit précisément faire face à ce type de résistance, où se combinent turbulences tribales, désordres sociaux et effervescence identitaire. La lutte qui s’engage alors entre bandes armées locales d’une part, et Service des Renseignements de l’armée française de l’autre, dépasse, et de loin, le face-à-face purement martial, mais renvoie à un choc des violences, sociale et guerrière d’un côté, étatique et militaire de l’autre, dont il n’est pas sûr que la leçon ne vaille qu’au passé.

    Description: This chapter provides a thorough investigation of the modes by which the sanitary administration coevolved coherently with and inseparably from the Spanish state’s modern transport-communication and economic-industrial infrastructures throughout the nineteenth century. It also investigates examines how quarantine institutions functioned as sanitary gateways or entry checkpoints at borders, physically marking and consolidating while protecting the national territorial space. The paper traces the ideas underpinning the configuration and development of the sanitary network on Spanish national territory, which occurred unevenly – with the most evolved parts depending on certain strategic ports and on links with the railway transport infrastructure that was still under construction. It also suggests that the gradual relaxation of quarantine in liberal Spain was periodically called into question by economic and political policies that defined the relation between the coastal and inland regions of the country.

    Description: En 1626, une première compagnie par actions est formée à l’initiative de Richelieu pour mener la colonisation des Petites Antilles et organiser le trafic transatlantique. Elle repose sur les associés, des proches du cardinal, qui en possèdent le capital et en assurent la direction. En 1635, elle est réorganisée afin de pouvoir satisfaire d’une façon plus efficace les objectifs qui lui ont été fixés par la monarchie, à savoir, conquérir et peupler des terres et favoriser le commerce. Elle prend alors le nom de Compagnie des îles de l’Amérique. Sous sa conduite, les Français déjà établis à Saint-Christophe s’installent à la Guadeloupe et à la Martinique et affichent des prétentions sur la Grenade, Sainte-Croix, Saint- Martin et Saint-Barthélemy. Plusieurs milliers de colons tentent l’aventure en franchissant l’océan à la quête d’un meilleur avenir et de richesses. Les terres sont exploitées pour satisfaire les besoins de la métropole. Quelques grands domaines s’appuyant sur une main-d’œuvre constituée d’esclaves africains développent de nouvelles productions comme le sucre et l’indigo. Mais la Compagnie est bientôt confrontée à de multiples difficultés qui remettent en cause son fonctionnement et ses finalités. Les tensions dans les îles et les faibles retombées de sa politique économique conduisent les associés à cesser progressivement leurs activités à partir de 1649. Sa fin pourtant ne signifie pas l’échec de la colonisation française des Petites Antilles. L’héritage qu’elle lègue va fructifier durant les décennies suivantes et donner naissance au premier empire colonial français.

    Description: “Long live the Reds, down with the Whites! Long live Ledru-Rollin! Bonaparte to the guillotine! Down with the Chouans!”. These cries made in October 1850 by grape pickers from the Dole area are one of the many traces that Pierre Merlin collected in archives that have been little-studied until now to write the living history of the democratic learning in Jura between 1848 and the end of the 19th century. From the intense political struggles around 1848 to the establishment of the Republic and beyond, the book describes the formation of a democratic opinion that is illuminated by trajectories of emblematic republicans and socialists such as Louis-Étienne Jousserandot and Jean-Paul Mazaroz.

    Description: Si la comparaison peinture/musique, vision/audition, est courante, en revanche il n’existe pas de réflexion théorique qui, en les comparant, fasse appel à des spécialités aussi différentes que l’esthétique philosophique, l’histoire des sciences, l’histoire de l’art, la logique, l’iconographie, la psychosociologie, la théorie musicale, la théorie littéraire. Penser la vision et l’audition, penser la peinture et la musique sont des opérations corrélées mais pas nécessairement dans le sens qu’on pourrait croire : car peinture et musique sont autant révélatrices et constitutives d’une théorie de la vision ou de l’audition que conditionnées ou constituées par elles. Ainsi la circularité entre le moment épistémologique et le moment esthétique méritait d’être examinée pour elle-même. Un tel examen supposait qu’on récuse la logique du spectaculaire figée sur la polarité entre l’agent et l’objet exhibé. Il réclamait la convocation conjointe de différentes disciplines. Des objets et des questions apparemment disparates : théories de la perception, problème de l’autoréférence picturale, iconographie, relation entre oreille et timbre, relation entre écoute musicale, surdité et désir, problème de la correspondance des arts et de leur extériorité – analysés de ce point de vue trouvent leur profonde homogénéité par l’élaboration d’une thèse qui leur sert de foyer d’intelligibilité. C’est que peinture et musique ne sont pas réductibles à des produits de la pensée ; elles sont des lieux où non seulement la pensée se révèle, mais aussi où elle se construit, parce qu’elles fonctionnent comme les opérations d’une réforme (au sens que Bachelard donnait à ce terme) qui, en déstabilisant la tranquillité du regard et de l’écoute, montre et fait résonner ce qui, invisible et inaudible, ne saute ni aux yeux ni aux oreilles, mais que cependant on aurait toujours dû voir et entendre.

    Description: Across Europe, the early medieval period saw the advent of new ways of cereal farming which fed the growth of towns, markets and populations, but also fuelled wealth disparities and the rise of lordship. These developments have sometimes been referred to as marking an ‘agricultural revolution’, yet the nature and timing of these critical changes remain subject to intense debate, despite more than a century of research. The papers in this volume demonstrate how the combined application of cutting-edge scientific analyses, along with new theoretical models and challenges to conventional understandings, can reveal trajectories of agricultural development which, while complementary overall, do not indicate a single period of change involving the extension of arable, the introduction of the mouldboard plough, and regular crop rotation. Rather, these phenomena become evident at different times and in different places across England throughout the period, and rarely in an unambiguously ‘progressive’ fashion. Presenting innovative bioarchaeological research from the ground-breaking Feeding Anglo-Saxon England project, along with fresh insights into ploughing technology, brewing, the nature of agricultural revolutions, and farming practices in Roman Britain and Carolingian Europe, this volume is a critical new contribution to environmental archaeology and medieval studies in England and beyond.

    Description: L’Alterpolitique est une contribution à la critique intellectuelle de ce que son auteur définit comme un ordre capitaliste-colonialiste-domesticateur. Cet ordre global est marqué par l’instrumentalisation excessive, l’exploitation et la dégradation de l’environnement humain comme de l’environnement non-humain. Il s’agit d’un ordre perclus de formes destructrices et inacceptables, mais surtout dispensables, d’inégalités, d’injustices et de marginalisations. Depuis les années 1960, on a progressivement réalisé que l’esprit d’opposition et les politiques qui ont marqué les combats anticapitalistes, antiracistes et anticoloniaux de par le monde ont souffert d’une faiblesse fondamentale. Tout en renversant, parfois avec succès, l’ordre politique auquel ils s’opposaient, ils ont été moins efficaces dans l’intégration structurelle au sein de leurs politiques d’opposition de propositions alternatives aux réalités qu’ils avaient su abolir. Que ce soit dans l’expérience du « communisme réel » tel qu’il est appliqué sur le terrain ou dans celle des sociétés ayant résulté des combats anticoloniaux, on constate la réalisation progressive que les « antipolitiques » (politiques d’opposition visant à abolir l’ordre existant) nécessitent d’être complétées par une pensée tout aussi vibrante et passionnée de type « alterpolitique » (politiques alternatives) qui se montre capable de saisir les potentiels émergents et de préparer le terrain pour de nouveaux modes de vie. Le présent ouvrage met en valeur la manière dont l’anthropologie critique, pour avoir toujours pris comme objet de recherche et de réflexion les économies alternatives, les modes alternatifs d’habitation et de rapport à la terre, ainsi que les différentes façons de penser et d’expérimenter l’altérité, présente une affinité particulière avec les dynamiques nécessaires pour la formulation des stratégies alterpolitiques.

    Britain's Second Embassy to China (2021)

    Description: Lord Amherst's diplomatic mission to the Qing Court in 1816 was the second British embassy to China. The first led by Lord Macartney in 1793 had failed to achieve its goals. It was thought that Amherst had better prospects of success, but the intense diplomatic encounter that greeted his arrival ended badly. Amherst never appeared before the Jiaqing emperor and his embassy was expelled from Peking on the day it arrived. Historians have blamed Amherst for this outcome, citing his over-reliance on the advice of his Second Commissioner, Sir George Thomas Staunton, not to kowtow before the emperor. Detailed analysis of British sources reveal that Amherst was well informed on the kowtow issue and made his own decision for which he took full responsibility. Success was always unlikely because of irreconcilable differences in approach. China’s conduct of foreign relations based on the tributary system required submission to the emperor, thus relegating all foreign emissaries and the rulers they represented to vassal status, whereas British diplomatic practice was centred on negotiation and Westphalian principles of equality between nations. The Amherst embassy’s failure revised British assessments of China and led some observers to believe that force, rather than diplomacy, might be required in future to achieve British goals. The Opium War of 1840 that followed set a precedent for foreign interference in China, resulting in a century of 'humiliation’. This resonates today in President Xi Jinping’s call for ‘National Rejuvenation’ to restore China’s historic place at the centre of a new Sino-centric global order.

    Description: Aboutissement d’une exploration systématique de toutes les sources disponibles, tant latines qu’orientales, ce gros ouvrage constitue une somme encore inégalée sur l’histoire des croisades et du royaume latin de Jérusalem. L’édifice repose sur une étude attentive de la situation de l’Orient musulman et de l’Occident chrétien, à la fin du XIe siècle. Dans ce tableau viennent naturellement s’insérer la prédication et l’organisation de la Première Croisade. Pauvres et riches, piétons et chevaliers prennent la route de Jérusalem, conquièrent la Ville sainte, après "mainte souffrance, et y établissent le coeur d’un nouvel État progressivement conquis. Le réveil du djihad suscite les Deuxième et Troisième Croisades, inégalement fructueuses. À la fin du XIIe siècle, le redressement du monde latin conduit à l’avènement d’un second royaume, centré sur la ville d’Acre, mais réduit à un liseré côtier. Après les espoirs que font naître Frédéric II puis saint Louis, les Mamlûks prennent le dessus, le royaume se désagrège jusqu’à la catastrophe finale de 1291. La précision du récit événementiel laisse place à de larges échappées sur les institutions et la société des États latins, résultat de la première colonisation qu’ait établie l’Occident chrétien en terre étrangère. Tant par l’élégance de son écriture que par la richesse de l’information, l’oeuvre de Joshua Prawer reste un monument de granit dans l’historiographie de l’Orient latin.
