Description: The volume is a comprehensive handbook of oral history and memory studies in Finland. The Finnish research field has originally emerged at the collaborative intersection of history, folklore studies, and ethnology. Since then, this field has developed into vibrant multi- and cross-disciplinary arena characterized by a strong focus on methodological issues related to memory in culture and theoretical engagement with studies on narration and processes of remembering. The chapters of the book explore the perspectives on the production of memory-based knowledge in oral history interviews and collection campaigns of written reminiscences. Moreover, the book introduces versatile methodological approaches to the study of memory and memories, ranging from narrative to corpus analysis, and investigates the multiple media of remembrance from documentary film to museum exhibition. The chapters of the book also engage the field’s disciplinary position and interrogate the potentials and challenges related to the application of the methods of oral history research and the use of memory-based knowledge beyond academia in political, societal, and community-based projects.

Description: In this book are published folktales and legends from Porabje / Rába-vidék which were recorded in 1970 by Milko Matičetov on magnetic tapes. The material has been for many decades stored in the archive of the Institute of Slovenian Ethnology ZRC SAZU in Ljubljana. It was only with the help of the experts from Porabje, well-versed in these dialects, that it was possible to publish the recordings.Presented are 238 narrative units, transcribed from tapes in a simplified dialectal transcript. All of the texts are also published in the standard Slovenian language. Two narratives are transcribed in the phonetic dialectological transcription. Added is CD with the recordings of 13 folktales in both varieties of Rába dialect (from Apátistvánfalva and Felsoszölnök district). The introductory section includes studies addressing the development of the narrative culture of Slovenes in Porabje, their language and brief history, as well as a presentation of the storytellers who had narrated these folktales and legends to Milko Matičetov. The folktales have been included in the international database, in accordance with the existing scientific international typology, and are therefore available for further comparative research. This book preserves narrative tradition of Slovenes in Rába-vidék, and is of particular importance to young people, who often no longer speak in the vernacular language.

Description: Presented are seven folktales from Resia in northern Italy with a strong Slovene minority. On CD are presented narratives which have been recorded on magnetic tape by Academician Milko Matičetov. Translations from the Resian dialect in Slovene and in Italian language are published in accompanying book. One folk tale was recently recorded by Roberto Dapit in the Resian village of Lischiazze/Liščaci, and has been included in the collection to illustrate contemporary Resian narrative tradition. The tales recorded on the compact disk represent four different language groups of the Resian dialect, namely that of Stolvizza/Solbica, Oseacco/Osojane, San Giorgio/Bila, and Gniva/Njiva. This work was done within the project Zborzbirk.

Description: Songs and writings: oral and literary cultures in early-modern Finland renews the understanding of exchange between the learned culture of clergymen and the culture of commoners, or “folk”. What happened when the Reformation changed the position of the oral vernacular language to literary and ecclesiastical, and when folk beliefs seem to have become an object for more intensive surveillance and correction? How did clergymen understand and use the versatile labels of popular belief, paganism, superstition and Catholic fermentation? Why did they choose particular song languages, poetic modes and melodies for their Lutheran hymns and literary poems, and why did they avoid oral poetics in certain contexts while accentuating it in others? How were the hagiographical traditions representing the international medieval literary or “great” tradition adapted to “small” folk traditions, and how did they persist and change after the Reformation? What happened to the cult of the Virgin Mary in local oral traditions? The first Finnish 16th-century reformers admired the new Germanic models of Lutheran congregational hymns and avoided the Finnic vernacular Kalevala-metre idiom, while their successors picked up many vernacular traits, most notably alliteration, in their ecclesiastical poetry and hymns. Over the following centuries, the new features introduced via new Lutheran hymns such as accentual metres, end-rhymes and strophic structures were infusing into oral folk poetry, although this took place also via secular oral and literary routes. On the other hand, seventeenth-century scholars cultivated a new academic interest in what they understood as “ancient Finnish poetry”. The book has an extensive English Summary for the international readership.

Description: Katarina Šrimpf Vendramin v monografiji Zgodbe in prostor raziskuje in predstavlja ustno izročilo zgornjega Obsotelja, ki leži ob slovensko-hrvaški meji. V prvem delu prikaže historiat zbiranja in objavljanja pripovednega izročila, v drugem pa predstavi sodobno terensko gradivo in analizo besedil, teksture in konteksta. Raziskava izpostavlja vlogo in pomen slovstvene folklore v družbenem in kulturnem življenju obravnavanega območja. Skozi etiološke povedke, zgodovinske zgodbe ter povedke o bajnih bitjih sta predstavljena koncepta liminalnega prostora-časa (kronotopa) in povezava ustnega izročila z ustvarjanjem kolektivnih identitet in kolektivnega spomina.

Description: Discursive study of religion (DSR) has become an increasingly recognised and applied approach to the study of religion. It asks: What passes for ‘religion’ in society? How do different constructions of ‘religion’ affect other social spheres such as politics, law, and everyday life, and vice versa? In this collection, Finnish scholars—many of them internationally recognized authorities on the subject—discuss DSR’s theoretical underpinnings, map the variety of discursive approaches, and apply the approach to case studies of politics, spirituality, and history. The book can be used as a textbook for religion and method courses in various disciplines.

Description: This book by the renowned Russian linguist and semiotician Nikolai Mikhailov [Николай Александрович Михайлов] (1967–2010) is now published posthumously, more than ten years after his death. Presented is analytic overview of numerous past studies on Slavic and Balto-Slavic mythology. Included are works written by scholars of Slavic mythology based on written sources as well as on findings from folklore, linguistics, and archaeology. The first analysed is the work of the Lusatian-Serbian author Michael Frenzl on Slavic idols, which was written as early as 1691 but not published until 1719. It is followed by treatises and monographs that span across three centuries. The so-called original sources (reports of chroniclers, archaeological sources) may be incomplete and obscure, yet they are in this book again critically analysed. The author reconstructed the mythology of various Slavic nations partly also through the remnants of paganism that have survived to this day in various and often highly modified forms.
Description: Knjiga priznanega ruskega jezikoslovca in semiotika Nikolaja Aleksandroviča Mihajlova [Николай Александрович Михайлов] (1967–2010) je izšla posthumno kar deset let po njegovi smrti. Prvotni viri (poročila kronistov in letopiscev) so sicer nepopolni in nejasni, vendar so v tej knjigi ponovno kritično analizirani. Poleg tega je skozi prežitke poganstva rekonstruirana tudi mitologija različnih slovanskih narodov in predstavljena njihova mitsko-ritualistična dediščina.

Description: The scientific monograph ('A Written Record of Live Storytelling') brings the basic theory and methodological procedures for field documentation, transcription and research of narrative folklore. It addresses threeContext, Texture and Transcoding of Stories Told Live by Tina Kravanja from Bavšica” brings the basic theory and methodological procedures for field documentation, transcription and research of narrative folklore. It addresses three levels of a folklore event – context, texture, and text – in the narration of folklore stories. Each level, especially context, is further enhanced with the theoretical findings derived from the author's own field work, e.g. defining storytelling meeting as alternation of stories, told in more artistic expression, and of linking texts told in an everyday. Linking texts are important cohesive ties of storytelling event as whole. The book also deals with defining of six roles of the participants who influence the course of storytelling event, etc. The monograph also attempts to solve the problem of putting down oral stories onto paper. To preserve as much information as possible, it proposes transcription as well as transcoding with the help of accurate phonetic transcription, concurrent notes on the texture, and a description of the context. The methods are explained with the phonetic transcription of 22 stories told by Tina Kravanja from Bavšica during a single field visit.

Description: This book (‘Type Index of Slovenian Folktales – Animal Tales and Fables’) is the first of the comprehensive body of systematization of Slovenian folktales along the lines of the latest, revised edition of the Types of International Folk Tales by Hans-Jörg Uther (2004). It includes Slovenian animal tales and fables that have been listed among the first 299 numbers of the international classification system. It contains archaic, internationally comparable material which was previously difficult to access and is now published for the first time in a comprehensive and systematic form. With the transfer of the latest scientific results to the Slovenian research sphere~additional studies and comments~and the application of the international classification system for the classification of material it greatly facilitates further development of the discipline while simultaneously including the Slovenian narrative tradition in a broader international context. Since each folktale type includes examples of folktales the book will also attract the attention of the general public.
Description: Knjiga je prva iz obsežnega opusa sistemizacije slovenskih ljudskih pravljic po vzoru zadnje dopolnjene izdaje Mednarodnega tipnega indeksa pravljic (H.-J. Uther, The Types of International Folktales 2004).
