Description: Urbanity and migration are considered to be two basic components in definitions of modernity. They force us to reflect on how the boundaries between the local and the global are determined and surpassed. Often this results in politically charged discussions about transnationality and national identity, monolingualism and multilingualism, inclusion and exclusion. The contributions to this issue of CLW demonstrate that literature can play a significant role in this debate. The authors highlight the representation of city and migration in a wide variety of novels published in Dutch, English, German, Spanish and French with a particular interest in political commitment.

Description: "Same-sex love was forbidden by law until 1944, and in culture it continued to be taboo, but it has always existed there. The prohibition created tensions which art and literature could play with. Narratives about forbidden love show this through well-known authors such as Agnes von Krusenstjerna, Maria Sandel, Karin Boye and Frida Stéenhoff, and less well-known ones like Gertrud Almqvist, Margareta Suber, Lydia Wahlström and the pseudonym Elsa Gille. The book investigates literary narratives about women’s love for women and the ideas about the forbidden contained in them. What strategies did the authors use to get round the ban on the mention of the topic? Are there any utopian visions of how everything could be arranged in a different and better way? And how does the literature relate to other theories about same-sex love? Berättelser om det förbjudna: Begär mellan kvinnor i svensk litteratur 1900–1935 (“Stories of the Forbidden: Desire between Women in Swedish Literature 1900–1935”) is a free-standing continuation of Kärlekshistoria: Begär mellan kvinnor i 1800-talets litteratur (“Love Story: Desire between Women in Nineteenth-century Literature”, 2008). Together the books span over 100 years of Swedish literary history, making them the most comprehensive study available in the field in Sweden and Scandinavia. Eva Borgström is associate professor of comparative literature and lecturer at the Department of Literature, History of Ideas, and Religion at the University of Gothenburg. She has formerly worked at the National Secretariat for Gender Research and the Department of Gender Studies.

Description: The Dutch colonial past in Indonesia has had a major influence on literature. In this edited volume the Dutch East Indies literature is systematically viewed for the first time from a postcolonial perspective. Each essays starts with an introduction about the author's life and his or her relationship with the Dutch East Indies or Indonesia, after which one or more novels are analysed. In addition to famous authors such as Louis Couperus, E. du Perron and Marion Bloem, less well-known writers are also discussed. Recurring points of interest are the representation of the unequal colonial power relations and the European strategies with which the 'Other' was marginalized. ‘De postkoloniale spiegel’ provides an innovative overview of more than 160 years of Dutch East Indies literary history.

Description: Crossing borders is a perilous undertaking, as this time of migrations and pandemics teaches us. Also for language-related cultural goods such as literary works, crossing those borders requires a lot of planning, strategic insights and a love for language and literature. After all, on their journey abroad, books bring with them other stories and cultural images, which in turn are filtered, if not manipulated, during the processes of selection and reception in the language of their destination. The study of this image (de)formation is therefore crucial in research into literary transfer. The authors of this collection respond to this by tracing the route of Dutch literature to Southern Europe and studying the image of Flanders and the Netherlands as expressed in translations through a combination of imagological and sociological translational findings. The conclusions in this collection show that the study of image formation in literary transfer can break through stereotypes and increase cultural awareness: crossing borders means pushing boundaries.

Description: By describing their present as ‘enlightened’, eighteenth-century intellectuals inevitably altered their relationship to the past. In search of an explanation for this Enlightenment, eighteenth-century authors created a historical narrative which connected European countries in a linear history from antiquity, through the barbarous Middle Ages, to the progress of the scientific revolution and, finally, to the enlightened present in which seventeenth-century knowledge was perceived as increasingly benefiting society as a whole. Even though this narrative served as a shared European history and identity, national varieties soon emerged. This book shows that, in the context of the European ‘Enlightened narrative’, the Dutch Republic formed an extraordinary case. Here, the narrative of progress collided with a simultaneous debate on national decline and a deeply rooted humanistic tradition. Dutch intellectuals, moreover, were forced to reconsider their national past and national identity. The Batavian myth, for two centuries the primary historical foundation of national identity, increasingly came to be viewed as ‘barbaric’. Consequently, the concept of a seventeenth-century Golden Age was invented. It replaced the Batavian myth with a celebration of seventeenth-century Dutch economic prosperity, commercial politeness and moral rectitude more in line with enlightened historical thought.

Description: Jacq Vogelaar was the most radical champion of experimental form in post-war Dutch literature. After his debut in 1965, he published a series of novels in which he progressively pushed the dismantling of the traditional narrative form. Jacq Vogelaar was not only an innovator of literary form, but also a leading and often critical voice in the public debate on Dutch literature. By showing Vogelaar’s multifaceted literary activity from diverse perspectives, Woekering en weigering offers a representation of this underrated author that is refreshing and rich in nuance. It is a well-deserved tribute to a literary monument.

Description: Our collective memory still associates the sixties with protest culture, but the legacy of the demonstrations is a topic of discussion to date. There is no shortage of myths about the sixties, but many facts and details remain unknown, including knowledge concerning literature of that time. Oproer in de letteren wants to offer insight into the complexity of the revolts by showing a contemporary perspective on the material. From Hugo Claus and racism to lyrics to pornography: the works in this book readjust the clichéd image of a defining period and show how Dutch literature interacted with an extraordinary decade.

Description: In Vluchtlijnen van de poëzie, Mettes' experimental poetry and political essayism are the starting point for a creative reading and (re)interpretation of recent poetry history. The book takes the reader from Mettes to Friedrich Hölderlin, Herman Gorter, Gertrude Stein, Sybren Polet, J.F. Vogelaar, Ron Silliman, Dominique De Groen, Hannah van Binsbergen and many others. The poetic galaxy that is created in this way offers insight into the relationship between politics, poetry and form.

Description: The flow of literature from Sweden to France is unlike anything else. Canonized authors such as August Strindberg and Selma Lagerlöf have been surprisingly successful in translating into French. The same applies to later high-prestige literature by Torgny Lindgren and P O Enquist. French publishers were also among the first to discover the Swedish detective story writers. The rights to Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy were bought by a French publisher before the novels began to be published in Swedish. Children's literature, on the other hand, perhaps Sweden's foremost contribution to world literature, had a late breakthrough in the French book market. This also applies to Astrid Lindgren, the incomparably most successful of all authors translated from Swedish. Why did Swedish fiction receive this particular reception in France? This book describes how Swedish literature has been translated into French, with a special focus on the period after 1945. During this period, the number of editions of Swedish fiction in French has increased tenfold. Which translators, publishers and other actors have contributed to this development? How have they reasoned and acted to promote the interests of Swedish literature? What types of literature and authorship have been particularly successful? These questions are answered on the basis of comprehensive statistics based on the latest bibliographic lists. The book also discusses the theoretical conditions for this type of study. The leading researchers in world literature research - Pascale Casanova, David Damrosch and Franco Moretti - are related to a literary sociological study of the book's communities.
