Description: European visual culture changed so fundamentally in the 13th century that, in retrospect, we perceive an epochal boundary – the stylistic change from Romanesque to Gothic, the transition from the High to the Late Middle Ages. Some of the foundations for this were laid in the previous century. Thus the developments initiated in the masons' lodges of northern France in the middle of the 12th century not only led to the great architectural achievements of the 13th century, but also to common standards in the sculpture of Western, Central and partly Southern Europe. Another important impulse came with the conquest of Constantinople in 1204. The half-familiar, half-exotic visual media of Byzantine art were mainly received in Central Europe and Italy, leading to the development of specific art forms that were distinct from Western painting. These achievements were complemented by literary production, which took on an unprecedented scale. In addition to the almost boundless quantities of religious writings and specialist literature, mainly written in Latin, the tradition of extensive profane poetry in national languages, which began at the end of the 12th century, intensified. The latter is evidenced by a growing readership outside spiritual institutions and the manufacturing structures that were formed to meet the new demand. This was inevitably accompanied by innovations in book illumination and the creation of new secular picture cycles. Which of the aforementioned dynamics were decisive in each individual case and whether there were other important factors that contributed to this development was the subject of an international conference that took place in 2017 at the Art History Institute of Vienna University under the title "Image- and Book-Culture in 13th-Century Europe", the results of which are presented in this volume. The contributions approach various aspects of the developments from different angles. They offer a range of current research, including approaches from the history of ideas and media research, as well as findings on recipients, networks, the transfer of objects and technical innovations based on detailed analyses. The starting point is formed by images - paintings and sculptures, stationary as well as mobile, publically accessible as well as private.
Description: Im 13.

Description: The exhibition at Villa La Quiete focuses on three important Renaissance sculptures, which had never been exposed to the public before. On this occasion, the works were carefully restored, continuing on the path of the previous restauration of the Villa’s artistic heritage at the hands of the University of Florence; the new restoration was supported by the Terna group, whose liberal donation helped restore one of the works on display, namely the beautiful in stucco Madonna with Child from Lorenzo Ghiberti’s workshop. This work comes with a rare terracotta piece of a Madonna with Child, by one of Donatello’s followers, and a Christ, the Saviour, in painted terracotta as well, made by the artist Agnolo di Polo, who trained in Andrea Verrocchio’s workshop. The three sculptures are a part of the oldest core of the Villa's collections, and represent a relevant example of the refined production of the multifaceted workshops of the Renaissance in Florence.

Description: The essays collected in Donum discuss different aspects of Florentine art from the 16th to the 18th century, such as sculptures displayed in gardens and palaces, the collecting preferences and strategies of the Medici family and those of the Tuscan aristocracy, drawings and paintings by local and foreign artists, and baroque wall decoration: these topics are analyzed in light of newly discovered artworks or previously unpublished documents. The common thread binding the papers together is the research method based on the study of archival sources and historical contexts, and on the connoisseurship. The volume gathers art historians who had been involved in the conference held in 2016 in honor of Mara Visonà as well as other scholars educated at the University of Florence.

Description: A poet, critic and translator, Giovanni Raboni is one of the most important figures in the literary panorama of the second half of the 20th Century. This volume sheds light on his twofold journey in the chaotic magma of the 50s and 60s: on the one hand the encounters and discoveries of a passionate and keen critic and reader, on the other the first steps of a young poet in search of his own voice . Young Raboni’s path arises from a courageous confrontation with the urgencies of his time, and is nourished by a profound dialogue with "poetry in flesh and blood", "poetry that is made". A path in which the pen of the "poetry reader" often accompanies, with his mild but severe firmness, the poet's free and autonomous hand.

Description: Gauguin's exoticism, an inexhaustible source of mythical constructions, is subjected to a careful revision of the contemporary, complex interference between symbolist culture and the pressures of colonial policies. Different perspectives are adopted, from the analysis of the theme of the mask in self-portraits, to literary suggestions, to suggestions received from the Universal Exposition of 1889, up to a reinterpretation of the stays in Brittany and Oceania, intended to clarify the links between exoticism and nostalgia, in a definition of escaping into space as the substitute for a regression of time, in search of a dimension of the origins now precluded to modern people.

Description: The volume retraces the influence of futuristic typographic experimentalism on the dada photomontage, investigating the progressive transformation of the alphabetical fragment into an image in the research of the first avant-garde movements. Moreover, it analyses the avant-garde reinterpretation of the neue Typographie in central-east-Europe. From the "Words-in-Freedom" to the Lautgedicht, from the Manifesto Poems to the first photomontages, the role of typography in the affirmation of two postulates of the twentieth-century artistic culture is analysed: the use of the word is the form and the value of the procedure is the meaning of the work. A chronology, commented on by photographic and documentary materials, which also offers the reader an instrument of exegesis in synergy with the critical text, paying particular attention to the testimonies of the Dadaists in the context of the neo-avant-garde movement.

Description: Drawing on different disciplinary and historiographic traditions, the volume offers a series of summaries and thematic insights, functional to contextualising the peculiar case of the episcopate of Bobbio, founded in 1014 in the Piacenza Apennines as a development of the famous monastery of San Colombano. The considerable documentary source available thanks to the recent reorganization of the diocesan archives, which made it possible to illustrate the cathedral library as well, required an overall presentation and specific attention to the constitutive acts of the new institution. The deepening of the historical context, within which the subsequent diocesan story unfolds, was conducted in relationship with the monastery and with a selection of the nearby cities. The analysis of the settlement dynamics of the Bobbian center and of the structural developments of the church and of the episcopal complex are counterpointed by both in-depth analyses aimed at the organization of the territory, captured in its civil, religious, welfare articulations, and treatments of cultural and liturgical components that animate this Church.

Description: This book is the second part of the work devoted to the tourist guide as a meeting place between lexicon and images of cultural heritage, a work resulting from the colloquium which took place on June 11 and 12, 2015 in Pisa and Florence. This volume focuses on the image, as a representation of reality but also as a place from which the imagination can be exercised by evoking mental representations (the imaginary). The three proposed sections (I. Les images du voyage; II. L’art dans le guide; III. Les guides entre imaginaire et propagande) intend to suggest routes of reflection around the tourist guide, an object that has never ceased to transform and which, through the lexicon and images, has been able to transmit the most different and picturesque cultural heritages.

Description: If the artworld is a battlefield of meanings, the fortunes of discourse did not favour avant-garde art in Finland in the 1910s. The latest trends, introduced by German and Russian artists in three pioneering exhibitions in Helsinki in 1914 and 1916, were dismissed by the Finnish press as foolish and unworthy. This book researches the contemporary reactions and contents of these exhibitions. The works shown in Helsinki included masterpieces from artists such as Chagall, Jawlensky, Kandinsky, Marc, Münter and Rozanova. Today these works can be found in the collections of leading museums in Europe, Russia and the USA. From the Finnish perspective, the turndown in the 1910s proved effective and irreversible. Never again have the local collections had similar opportunities to make a purchase. The rejection of radical international developments and emphasis on narrow nationalistic views left Finnish art lagging behind. This trend was already apparent in 1917 in St. Petersburg, where the Finnish artists were celebrated but their paintings deemed sombre and superannuated.

Description: The volume concludes a multi-year study conceived and carried out by the Museo del Tessuto of Prato, which involved public bodies and cultural institutions in the city motivated by the desire to see one of the identifying products of the Prato textile district returned to contemporary life: its cloth. The idea to experimentally reconstruct the cloth arose from the study of some documents of the Datini Fund, a unique archival complex in the world for historical and economic studies on the Middle Ages. The collective and interdisciplinary project is documented in a volume created in collaboration with the International Institute of Economic History “F. Datini”. The historical contributions on the manufacturing and commercial management of the Datini cloth are followed by a second part that documents the study and experimentation phases of its reconstruction.

Description: The volume reconstructs the role of the "art objects" in the renewal of identity (social, political and cultural) of the Mannelli family, among the oldest families of the Florentine patriciate. During the 17th Century the main exponents adopted a lifestyle inspired by the Medici court, gradually dismantling, but at different times, the dress of the merchant. The analysis of the main town and countryside residences and of the displaying of the objects of art, conducted on a documentary basis and with the “display of art” critical tools, returns the fundamental stages of the renewal process and, together with numerous autonomous episodes of unpublished patronage and collecting, the emergence of common narrative strategies of historical and political identity through art objects.

Description: The purpose of this book is to explore the transformations in the functioning of power in the countryside of the kingdom of Italy over the fifty years at the turn of the 1100s, and more particularly the process of affirmation and crystallization of the rural lordship. The investigation develops through the reconstruction not only of the structures of power over men and space, and of the related social morphologies, but also of the political communication system at the local level. The outbreak of the civil wars connected with the “struggle for the Investitures", after 1080, translates into a clear reconfiguration of the socio-political matrix, transforming both the practices of local power, and the instruments of political communication and the related documentation. The Italian case offers in this sense a new perspective on the great and still open historiographic problem, of the "feudal revolution" in the European context.

Description: The volume reproduces the documentary path of the exhibition Florence in the war 1940-1944 promoted by the Historical Institute of the Resistance in Tuscany on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Resistance and Liberation. Introductory contributions illustrate the work in progress who accompanied the exhibition project and intend to guide the reader through a series of historiographical questions at the center of the exhibition: the centrality of the 1940-1943 phase, which has hitherto remained in the background, the economic transformations, the knots of consent and social control, the characters of the German occupation, the role of the Church and the complex plot of the Florentine Resistance. The aim of the research was to closely investigate the impact of the war on the population of a large urban area, trying to highlight its specificity and connections with the national framework.

Description: This publication concerns the history of the Tuscan Capuchin convents since their foundation in the 18th century, analysed through the transcription and critical edition of a manuscript written in 1704 by Filippo Bernardi da Firenze (1649-1721). It is a source of great interest both for considering the events happening in the convents, and more generally for the history of Tuscany itself. In fact, the manuscript collects numerous transcribed documents - dating from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century - whose originals are now partially lost. Through these testimonies it is possible to retrace the events of the Tuscan communities and obtain numerous information of a social, anthropological and cultural nature. The manuscript is preceded by a historical introduction to the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin and by the biography of Filippo da Firenze.

Description: The Covid-19 pandemic has had unprecedented and dramatic consequences on the cultural activities and the development of tourism in italian cities. In the midst of this scenario, the Department of History, Archeology, Geography, Art, and the Performing Arts (SAGAS) of the University of Florence organized three days of online conferences in which representatives of political and cultural institutions, along with qualified observers, expressed their views on the future of cultural policy after the health crisis. This book is a collection of all those “voices on the future of our heritage” that spoke in this series of videoconferences. This publication aims at ensuring that they can be heard by a wider audience, to start a reflection on the possibility of redesigning Florence’s cultural and touristic offerings. To bring about such a change, it is necessary to think within a new framework, one that aims at integrating itineraries capable of embracing the entire city, its histories, and its communities.

Description: This book is a continuation of the lively debate launched in Dall'oggetto estetico all'oggetto artistico which the same editors published with Firenze University Press. The argument of the book is the organic link connecting the two thematic axes that define the ambit of aesthetics: the theory of perception and reflection on the arts. The apparent tautology of the title is intended to stress how the interpenetration of perception and work of art is structural and organic, thus calling up the theoretical urgency of this problem for an effective understanding of the dynamics of the sense of art as a "symbolic form" in which the relation between the mind and the world is embodied in an exemplary manner. The book is divided into three sections. The first presents nuclei of reflection emerging from unconventional contemporary perspectives. The second addresses various angles of the theory of perception. Finally, the third part explores several cases in which contemporary artists have tackled the link between expressive practice and the articulation of perception.

Description: Broken Narrative provides an extensive reflection on history, politics, and contemporary art, revolving around the cornerstones of the artistic practice of Albanian artist Armando Lulaj. The core of the book is formed by and extended interview of Lulaj by Italian artist and writer Marco Mazzi. This inquiry starts in the year 1997, a year of social and political upheaval in Albania, of anarchy, controversies and emigration, of toxic seeds of neoliberalism sprouting in an already wounded country, and continues to the present day, where politics, hidden behind art forms, has practically destroyed (again) every different and possible future of the country. This book also sketches out a connection between the recent Albanian political context and contemporary art by considering the realities of Albania as essential for an understanding of the dynamics of international power in contemporary art and architecture, and the role of politics therein. Broken Narrative comes in a bilingual English–Japanese edition, in part as homage to the subtle esthetics of Japanese poetry, which has inspired many of the Lulaj’s works, while equally evoking the subversive films of the Red Army, active in Japan at the turn of the 1960s and ’70s. Broken Narrative contains a double preface in English by Albanian scholar Jonida Gashi and in Japanese by photographer Osamu Kanemura.

Description: As in a journey back in time, the stages of the first tournées of Italian actors in Russia in the 18th Century are retraced. By studying the translations of comedies and musical interludes, staged in St. Petersburg from 1731 to 1738, the practices of the first Italians who trod the stages of Tsarina Anna Ioannovna are rediscovered. Through the translation of the repertoire that has come down to us, the author reconstructs the traces of the Commedia dell'Arte and of the life and works of a handful of interpreters ready to face dangerous journeys in order to obtain gains and honors. The research, conducted on printed documents and primary archival sources, also based on the previous studies of Starikova and Ferrazzi, devotes particular attention to the biographies of the interpreters.

Description: Unfinished work or interrupted work… It is difficult to find a definition, to identify the theme, to distinguish chance from intentionality. Few 'genres' and / or variations express as the 'unfinished' the same need for what is external to the work and which somehow completes it, bringing the work in a privileged position to create a harmony with our restless modernity. No wonder that in literature, in addition to what has been brutally interrupted, the letters, the diaries, the chronicles of disease and suffering are naturally suspended works. No wonder either that incompleteness accompanies the writings referring to unsolved issues, hidden traumas, silent melancholy. Dictated by choice or by distinct degrees of incapacity, the temptation of the unfinished pursues, urges, deludes its author... The private writings, the sketches, the projects, the papers testify the path necessary for the work to develop and conquer its shape. This book is rich and suggestive and has been conceived and edited by Anna Dolfi. Like its very object, the work is drafted in the perspective of the unfinished and questions some of the many possible examples, along a diachronic arc that goes to literature at figurative arts, theatre, cinema: from Leonardo to Blake, from Ariosto to Stendhal, from Dossi to Gadda, from Kafka to Borges, from Sarraute to Morante, from unknown writers affected by 'cancroregina' to the last Pirandello staged by Tiezzi, up to Fellini of the impossible Mastorna ... At the centre of the volume the readers will find a section with the typescript pages and the unpublished notebooks of / for the work La scelta by Giuseppe Dessí. They lead to the limits of white space, where the chambre claire fixes what is hidden beyond the writing with few, rarefied signs.

Description: The region crossed by the upper course of the Tigris River, in south-eastern Turkey, has long been an area little known from an archaeological point of view. The intensification of field research, starting from the nineties of the last century, has produced the evidence on which to base a first reconstruction of the history of the settlement and of the material culture of these territories, located between the high Anatolian-Eastern lands and the Mesopotamian plains. The results of the excavations and field surveys indicate that between the end of the Ancient Bronze Age and the beginning of the Middle Bronze Age a process of transformation and reorganisation of the local communities matured. The appearance of large architectural complexes and buildings in medium-small sites, characterised by particular sets of objects and red-brown ceramics, could reveal the development of socio-political realities more structured than those of the previous period. Moreover, this could be an expression of the Khurrite world which, according to historical studies, would locate one of its main settlement areas in the Tigris region.

Description: It is generally recognized that in early modern society, the position of the church and clergy was very central. As many historians have stated over the decades, the church and state were closely connected and their power structures and ideologies supported each other. However, when studying the social and public role of the church and clergy, it soon becomes quite clear how pervasive this phenomenon was. The church not only created but also maintained and acted as a part of international, national, and local communities, structures, and cultures that connected people regardless of their social status and gender. The church was a spiritual, administrative, and social institution and experience environment, whose tasks, scope, and meanings changed and intertwined with the development, needs, and requirements of society. In this book, we investigate from different perspectives the motives and different means by which the church and clergy came to play a significant part in early modern society. In this volume, the church is considered both as an administrative institution and as a social space and cultural structure. Hence, we do not focus on the history of theology or doctrinal questions. Instead, we consider the social and public roles and meanings of the church. The church as such is understood in this book as transnational, a strong national and local institution, and also a space and structure. The church had its own institutionalized place in society and its activities and rights were defined by law (Church law 1696, the Law of the Swedish kingdom 1734) and by the decrees given by the Royal Majesty. The church had its own archbishop-led administrative organization under the Royal Majesty and it worked in close cooperation with the Crown administration and county governors. In this volume, we understand the clergy as church servants, a trained and appointed professional group, a separate estate (social class), and also as a wide social network constructed by their families. The approach of this book is social science history. In other words, the book examines the church and the clergy as an integral part of society and the individual communities who lived in the current Finnish territory during the early modern era. The topic is examined on the basis of three conceptual themes reflecting important new areas of research in the study of the social significance of the church and clergy: (1) the clergy and family as part of the community, (2) the church as a jointly built space, and (3) the church as an arena for interaction, knowledge, and politics. We approach this multidimensionality using different research questions, sources, methods, and theoretical approaches. The volume focuses on the 17th to 19th centuries, but many of the church and clergy-related phenomena are much older, and some of them extend to the present, so the articles also move beyond this time frame.

Description: This essay is republished ten years later because, on the one hand, the current geopolitical situation has radically changed compared to then. The Caucasus represents a decisive political and social link between Western societies and Asia, as well as the historical link between Christianity and Islam, today even more than ten years ago. On the other hand, over the last two decades, particularly in the last ten years, scholars have been paying increasingly more attention to the history of the Mongols. Research and publications have multiplied in Europe, the United States, Russia and all those countries having direct or indirect relationships with the empire created by Genghis Khan. Many works published in past years had been confined to the local dimension, because they were written in hard-to-access languages, from Hungarian to Persian, from Russian to Chinese. However, since the beginning of the 2010s, there have been intense translation works of the sources into English, as well as a significant research activity, whose results are often being published in English, therefore becoming accessible to the international scientific community.

Description: Giorgio Trentin (1917-2013), eldest son of the anti-fascist exile Silvio and brother of the unionist Bruno, was one of the greatest connoisseurs, enthusiasts and 'defenders' of engraving art in Italy. With this conference promoted a few months after his death, the Academy of Fine Arts of Venice and the Centro documentazione e ricerca Trentin have brought together the researches of scholars from different backgrounds and the testimonies of those who knew Giorgio Trentin. The aim was the one of restoring unity to the two 'faces' of his figure: on one hand the civil and anti-fascist militancy (a characteristic and unmistakable mark of the family) on the other the commitment in the artistic field, which represented personal space of Giorgio or, better, his personal declination of that common militancy. To him, in fact, the engraving technique was an indispensable paradigm of moral rigour and the search for truth.

Description: The volume analyses the representation of ceramic artefacts appearing in some Tuscan artistic works dating back to the 14th and 15th century and aims to combine the data emerging from iconographic sources with those relating to material and written documentation. It also aims to grasp the potential of iconography, trying to understand the extent to which it is possible to identify archaeologically well-defined cultural areas; it also attempts to establish whether the representations of specific details of everyday life correspond to a realistic description of everyday life itself, or rather are a reflection of feelings of curiosity, amazement, ambition or appreciation for the beauty of the objects. The study highlights how iconography is able to integrate our knowledge on the medieval ceramic productions and on the social context of use of specific vascular forms and types.

Description: The book explores the discourses of modernism, contemporary art and art history writing as well as their interdisciplinary values and boundaries – and cases that do not fit within these boundaries. The articles explore the meanings of junk and relics, high art, design, and the intimate experience of art and public criticism. The themes explored in the book expand our views on the queer potential of colour, the meaning of detail, and the relationships between visual art and writing. The fourteen peer-reviewed case studies in the volume offer new insights from the fields of visual cultural studies, art history and gender studies. The articles in the anthology do not rely strictly on disciplinary boundaries but also open themselves up to broader fields of culture.

Description: The royal monastery of San Salvatore on Mount Amiata, which, according to tradition, was founded in the 8th century by the will of the Lombard kings near the papal lands, has been the focus of numerous researches in recent decades dedicated not only to some famous codices preserved for centuries in his library, but also to the documentary writings handed down in the Diplomatico, which collects documentation from the mid-eighth century. In this volume, the paleographic and diplomatic interpretation of the writings elaborated by the abbots and the Amiata monks intertwines with the reconstruction of the practices of power management, both in its local dimension and in that of relations with popes and emperors.

Description: This volume deals with the very current issue of prevention and protection of the historical buildings from seismic risk, offering a methodology of investigation, called “archaeoseismology”, developed within university environments and refined by several discussions with professionals and experts of the field. The text is not only intended for an audience with an archaeological background, but also for the different people operating in the field of cultural heritage and seismic risk, be these architects, restorers, structural engineers, historians or seismologists. The book, therefore, aims at acting as a first step towards the affirmation of a news discipline, analysing and enhancing its applicability and potential, and providing unpublished and indispensable data for the knowledge, enhancement and protection of cultural heritage.

Description: A long eighteenth century - on the footsteps of the erudite tradition and of the Muratori’s publishing method - and a very short nineteenth century, enclosed between the first post-unification decade and the threshold of the Great War, when the advent of a new and professionalised generation of scholars (Bonelli, Vittani, Torelli, Manaresi) would also impose a radical change in Lombardy in the field of palaeographic-diplomatic research. These are the coordinates (of a conceptual rather than a chronological nature) of the book, which for the first time analyses a significant period of medieval history under a historiographic perspective and retraces the careers, projects, the initiatives of the individuals and institutions that have animated that epoch. The editors and the editions of medieval documents coming from Lombardy are at the heart of the publication, although wider perspectives and many protagonists whose fame goes beyond the borders of regional culture revolve around them. The process of defining a modern diplomatic philology in the editions of Lombard sources is followed, marking its salient stages and turning points. However, in the background stand out the broader (as well as stronger and ideologically connoted) themes of Medieval studies before and after the Unification of Italy. These are the issue of the Longobards, the myth of the Commune civilisation in the Risorgimento culture, the identity of the Visconti-Sforza state. Analysing the editors and the editions of medieval documents in Lombardy between the nineteenth and twentieth century means shedding a significant light on the very dynamics of the organisation of regional historical research. Such analysis moves within a lively debate offering scientific and cultural implications between the hegemonic Milanese centre and the sometimes riotous municipalisms of the many suburbs.

Description: The iconological analysis of Crespi’s paintings for Grand Prince Ferdinando de’Medici reveals shared ideas rooted in Seneca’s philosophy, basis of their taste for genre and pastoral scenes. Crespi was a leading figure of the prince’s artistic view, according to which arts and sciences guide to wisdom and virtue. Their appreciation for bizarre iconographies and Venetian style painting is clarified by ideas inspired by Seneca on ingenuity and picturesque frenzy. The characteristics of conciseness, brilliance, coexistence of archaism and innovation associate Ferdinando’s artistic and musical patronage, influencing his favourite artists and composers and perhaps Handel’s art collection.

Description: The nineteenth century has been called an age of monuments. In some places even one piece made a difference. This book is a study of the intellectual background and physical making of Finland’s first public sculpture, the statue of Professor Henrik Gabriel Porthan by Carl Eneas Sjöstrand. The idealised but sombre Porthan was born under the influence of German neoclassicism. Development on the project was slow but sure. The Swedish artist had to be supported over three years while he was putting together his first monumental piece in Munich and Rome, after which came another three years wait before the cast arrived to Finland. The bronze sculpture, commissioned by the Finnish Literary Society and raised by public subscriptions from people of all classes, was unveiled in the city of Turku in September 1864. Finns took some pride in the fact that, unlike other nations that had raised monuments to kings and generals, here the first place was given to a scholar. In this study Sjöstrand’s pioneering bronze is placed in a wider context and compared with works by his precursors and contemporaries in the international sculptor colony of Rome.

Description: This book is the first volume of a collection of articles devoted to the tourist guide as a meeting place between lexicon and images of cultural heritage, a work resulting from the conference which took place on June 11 and 12, 2015 in Pisa and Florence, organized by the Research Unit Lessico dei Beni Culturali. The texts presented are the result of a joint reflection by specialists from different fields: linguistics, art history, architecture, photography, literature and geography to name a few. The two volumes analyze the tourist guide and the other works that accompany the trip as places of creation and transformation of the experience of real or virtual travel, participating as such in the creation of the tourist imaginary of places and cultural objects they describe.

Description: The essays collected in this volume revolve around the activities of protection and preservation of the historical-artistic and archaeological heritage promoted in Italy between the second half of the 18th century and the first half of the 20th. They refer to different works in both chronology and materials analyzed (wall and gallery paintings, medieval and Renaissance sculptures, mosaics, excavated vases, entire archaeological sites), with the natural corollary of the theoretical debates and the methodological statements that accompanied these same works. The reference to Fernand Braudel in the title embodies the desire to trace a path that is not abstract, but grounded in the reality of the objects and of those who have been studying them in the past. The choice of a relatively broad time span, as well as the decision not to focus exclusively on a single type of object, seek to highlight the diachronic evolution of general concepts such as conservation and restoration, understanding links and differences between the pre-and post-unification phases of the layered national landscape. Further, they aim to retrace the conservative history of these works, hoping to also provide an interpretative tool to those who, in charge of the protection of these works, are tasked with the planning of future interventions: a proper programmatic preservation cannot, in fact, ignore the historical dimension that needs to inform any study that is to be done today on these works.

Description: Avant-garde in Finland is the first book to provide an overarching introduction to avant-garde art by Finnish artists. The articles in the book discuss the application and development of the cultural ideas of the avant-garde in Finnish art from the early 20th century till the present day. The book focusses on the social, political, and artistic characteristics of avant-garde art and their manifestation in Finnish avant-garde literature, visual arts, architecture, fashion, and music. The book shows the remarkable role of women artists in the development of the Finnish avant-garde. Many artists and groups are presented in the book for the first time. At the same time, the articles highlight connections between well-known Finnish artists and international avant-garde movements that have not been recognized in earlier research. A key theme of the book is the tension between the internationality of avant-garde and the nationalist elements of Finnish culture. The book is peer-reviewed, and its authors are eminent senior scholars and younger researchers.

Description: This study differs from the traditional approach to the history of Genoa in the Middle Ages, which is tied to the definition of the ianuensis mercator. On the contrary, it aims at showing aspects of the artisans’ life, and therefore at correcting an orientation which has excessively privileged a specific (albeit crucial) sector of the city society. Through a systematic survey of the very rich notary registers, the study traces a multifaceted profile of those belonging to Genoa’s trade categories in the 12th and 13th centuries. The first part of the research begins with a definition of the artisans’ identity through the analysis of the anthroponymic system, which is then used to illustrate the social and economic dynamics underlying the apprenticeship and wage work. The central part of the book, on the other hand, is dedicated to the commercial and financial tools available to artisans, and to their involvement in long-range trade. The family structure and the social relationships are defined on the basis of a large sample of skills, testaments and quarrels, and then followed by an analysis of the artisans’ role in land and real estate transactions. The final discussion focuses on the participation of artisans in the political life and in military activities.

Description: The volume collects the contributions of the 'study day’ held on June 16, 2010 at the University of Florence on Abbeys and medieval landscapes in Tuscany, that is, on the forms of the territory that have structured the ways of life in the countryside of our region for centuries. Today an infatuation is observed for that kind of landscape, which is confirmed by a lack of interest for its conservation or for transformations respectful of the rules that produced it. It is therefore appropriate to submit to the historic method a synthetic view of the medieval landscape, from the ancient premises to the economic reasons that led to the monastic and feudal forms, up to the appearance of a new structure appreciated for its useful beauty, in a persistent substratum of mysterious storytelling. Tuscany allows multiple evidence of what actually survives of the pervasive order established in the Middle Ages also for its exemplary literary and iconographic representations, both contemporary and of the medieval times.
