Description: The Seine-Yonne sector occupies a special place in our knowledge of Neolithic societies. Although an interface between the southern and north-eastem branches, it is also the exclusive preserve of chalk flint. Applying the "technological system" concept, the author seeks to identify the skills levels of the flint knappers, asks whether expert knappers existed, and explores the spatial breakdown of the operational chain and the methods of acquiring and distributing raw materials in order to address the question of the socio-economic organization of flint tool production. Her exploration is based on the study of twelve reference series comprising over 100.000 flint artifacts in a multivariate analysis making use, among other approaches, of cladistics, the first time this technique has ever been applied to this field. By systematically referring to anthropological and historical questions, this book constitutes an important contribution to the study of the development of Neolithic communities across Europe.

Description: The results of the excavation, undertaken in Nîmes from 1966 to 1992, of the sites of the Marseillaise, the Villégiales des Bénédictins, the Hesperides and the Fontaine des Bénédictins, make it possible to follow the evolution of the Bénédictins district from the neolithic to the present day. Near a pre-roman oppidum, on the slopes of mount Cavalier, this area was occupied from the end of the sixth century BC, later finding itself at the heart of the old town after construction of the atywall during Augustus reign. No longer an urban area from the second century AD onwards, it remained rural until the eighteenth century.Organised according to a framework which respected the relief, with both water supply system and drainage, this district contained a group of houses whose plans, construction details, decoration and domestic finds are studied both individually and from a socio-economic point of view.

Description: In advance of the construction of an underground parking lot on the edge of the Saint-Georges quarter in the city of Lyon, on the right bank of the Saône, a team of Inrap archaeologists conducted an excavation between 2002 and 2004 with the goal of reconstructing the nature of the human installation from the beginning of Antiquity. Strongly supported by previous research and enriched by several complementary disciplines, the long and complex preventive excavation of the Parc Saint-Georges provided an opportunity to reconstruct the history of a riverbank with a difficult natural topography, which was gradually liberated from the river course, while not completely breaking from its influence. At this site, we find key evidence for the genesis of the formation of the alluvial plain of Lyon. At the end of the Protohistoric period, this was the location of the confluence of the original Rhone and Saône rivers, and then that of the new course of the Saône. The vitality of the fluvial network and port activities at Lugdunum are clearly illustrated by the discovery of a pier in association with a ferry dated to the end of the 1st century ad, and five heavy-tonnage barges dated to the 2nd and 3rd centuries. After a period of decreased occupation during the Early Middle Ages, the sector was progressively urbanized starting in the 12th century. At the center of the excavation, a zone with no construction was to be the future site of the port of Sablet. In the 16th century, this fluvial port was well established within the urban framework of the quarter. Seven fishwell boats provide evidence of commercial fishing activities. Significant changes were made in the second half of the 17th century in order to create a monumental port. A boat, which perhaps served for the transport of heavy merchandise, is dated to the middle of the 18th century. Until the end of the 19th century, the construction of the Fulchiron quay deprived the sector of direct access to the river, the bank was modified to accommodate the fluvial port of the quarter, and the environment was composed of "waterfront" houses. The significant historical data presented in this publication, obtained through a thorough exploitation of the information contributed by this excavation, represents a decisive advance in archaeological research, allowing a reconstruction of the early evolution of a major fluvial zone of the city of Lyon.

Description: This volume presents important results not only for archaeology in Provence but also increases our knowledge of the Mediterranean world at the very begining of the Middle Ages. The recent excavations of Saint-Blaise oppidum, near the Rhône delta, have brought to light the different stages of the reoccupation, from the 5th to the 7th century, of this protohistoric site. The ceramic assemblage testifies the importance of trade: red slip wares, amphorae, grey coarse wares from North Africa, the eastern Mediterranean and Liguria, regional slip wares (DS.P.), etc. The discovery of glass-ware with christian motifs and of vitrified crucibles indicates the existence of glass-working; stone, bone and metal objects, the coins, the fauna, especially the abundant remains of shellfish consumed, enrich the image of the life on this oppidum, one of the most important in Provence during this period of crisis and of change.

Description: Organised for the first time in Lorraine, this 13th interregional meeting on the Neolithic quite naturally privileged the origins of this period in eastern France: important synthesis concerning the region as well as contributions related to adjoining Germany and Belgium are to be found. Amongst others the question, still controversial, concerning the Rubané and Cardial influences on the French Neolithic is largely discussed here. Finally several articles concerning later stages of the Neolithic, notably the Michelsberg, are presented here.

Description: Of fundamental importance for the study of palaeolithic art, the Solutrean settlement site of Roc de Sers and the sculpted cave-wall art which typihes it are presented within a rigorous scientific framework Beyond the form-support relationship, developed to its fullest expression in the Magdalenian period, and the canon of gestures resulting from carefully controlled transmission of technical sculpting procedures, artistic and symbolic expression, seen from a techno-economic and sociocultural perspective, were enhanced by other inventive innovations Complex construction, use of contours and mastery of shadow work together to create Visual effects suggesting volume and perspective. The mastery of the third dimension, a considerable advance in the realm of cave-wall art, combines figurative art with unconventional, sometimes abstract composite figures, reflecting a society in which the concept of regionalism is gaining ground.

Description: Settled at the end of the XIIIth century on an unexploited land of the seignory of Mont-Saint-Jean, in Auxois, the “grange du Mont” was abandoned a hundred years later ; it did not resist to the demographic and economie recession at the end of the XIVth century, although it had been built to farm a large territory in a permanent way, as shown by the size and the quality of the structures. The archaeological excavation, the study of the archives and the ethnographic research, associated in an exemplary way, have led to the reconstitution of the structure and aims of such an agro-pastoral settiement in the Middle Age conception. This study brings new informations about a type of farming settiement poorly known until now, the “grange”, as well as about the artefacts and architecture of the rural settlements in mediaeval Burgundy.

Description: In this work stemm ing from her doctoral thesis, Anne Colin establishes a chronologiesl framework for fortifiée! and open settlements at the end of the Iron Age, in order to further our understanding of the pre-urbanisation phenomena that affected the Celtic world of this period. Examining ancientand recent documentation on some thirty sites and using a statistical sériés method applied to Gallic and imported furnishings, Anne Colin défi nés five phases which she then compares to existing régional chronologies. She analyses the diversity observed in régional trends, diversity due to differing political and économie circumstances, and also to the comptex rôle played by contacts with the Mediterranean sphere, throughout a large part of Caul. The study volume is completed by a site catalogue that includes unpublished data and bibliographical references.

Description: What is known about the settlement sites of non-Mediterranean Gaul at the end of the Iron Age? Relatively little compared to our knowledge of contemporary sites near the Mediterranean littoral. This study, based on a regional inventory of the settlement sites of Limousin, is a contribution to filling that gap. The author considers archaeological, numismatic and historical data from Corrèze, Creuse and Haute-Vienne in relation to information from other regions of France, and proposes an analysis of Gaulish society and political structures in the immediately pre-Conquest period. The study is avowedly regionalist in perspective and offers a critique of earlier, brooder- scale models of change during this period.

Description: The Château de Gréoux-les-Bains was built in the heart of Provence on a site which had been used from early Roman times for its hot springs. The castle’s powerful outline dominates the village whose organisation and architecture has preserved evidence of its development from the Middle Ages to the modern period. In the present work, Sandrine Claude combines analysis of archival sources, selected excavation data and standing remains - making particular use of building archeology - to determine the origins and ambitions that presided over the building of a castle whose size is disproportionate to its geographical and human context. The castle’s little known history and its architectural development are thus retraced and the monument placed in its human environment, that of its commissioners and successive owners.

Description: This work is the result of rescue archaeology carried out at Feurs (Loire) from 1978 to 1981. A series of excavations on the site of the Roman town revealed an earlier Gaulish settlement at its height during the late La Tène period. The discovery of evidence of pre-Roman occupation was completely unexpected since the cantonal capital of the Segusiavi, Forum Segusiavorum, was founded by Augustus and its origins were assumed to date from this period. Based upon the systematic analysis of a large number of finds series, the author’s study outlines how the different aspects of the Gaulish settlement of the site developed during the century preceding Caesar’s conquest. Seen within the context of inner Gaul, Feurs is of fundamental importance to our understanding of Gaulish civilisation at the end of the Iron Age.

Description: Before 1988 and the road construction that led to the archaeological operation presented in this book, the site of Paule was considered as just one earthen enclosure among others in Brittany. Then, from the first excavations, its unique nature was revealed: sculptures, monumental enclosures, and numerous potsherds quickly enabled its identification as an aristocratic residence. Twenty years of research have since uncovered six centuries of continuous occupation across nearly 10 hectares. From the farm’s original founding, circa 550 BC, until the site was abandoned circa 15 BC (soon after the Conquest), the reader is invited to follow—in a simple and lively and manner at the scale of human lives—the adaptations of a landed aristocratic family to their environment. Agricultural, defensive and storage needs, along with budding artisanal activities, modeled the buildings and spatial distribution of the site through time. The central family unit gradually detached from its dependents, who were relegated to a peripheral enclosure, as it attracted a population from surrounding areas that it would encompass within a vast fortification. The research methods employed in this work are those of Classical Archaeology, whose quality here lies in their coherence. Yves Menez, whose research at Paul was corroborated by a Ph.D. from the Sorbonne University, chose to venture beyond an interrogation based on complete and objective documentation of the site. Drawing from his double education in archaeology and engineering, he chose to embark on a broader historical and anthropological endeavor, integrating the phenomena involved in the transformations of a broader region. At each stage, he asked “why,” thus delving into the social structure, significance of the family and lineage, and the development of institutions. Abundant color illustrations enhance the written presentation of the archaeological remains, including reconstructions based on a digital field model. Finally, the English translation of the figure legends and detailed summaries of each chapter enable international readers clear access to the descriptions, arguments, and interpretations.

Description: The application of different analytical methods (sedimentology, malacology, palynology, anthracology. micromorphology, archaeozoology, radiocarbon and thermoluminescence dating) to a research programme has brought together informations concerning the way Magdalenian groups were implanted and organised in the centre of the Paris basin. In this synthesis, the interaction of all these results are coordinated, which enables the reader to discover and appreciate the multiplicity of contacts established between the prehistoric communities observed and their environment on one hand, and between prehistorians and their subject on the other.

Description: This volume comprises the published proceedings of a conference organized by the Société d’archéologie médiévale and the Groupement de recherche 94 of the CNRS which was held at Aix-en-Provence between September 1989 28th and 30th. The papers were grouped according to three themes which play a leading part in the study of medieval rural settlement. The first deals with the influence of late Antiquity on the religious topography of the medieval countryside and the problem of continuity of the ecclesiastical and funerary use of sites. The second adresses the role of churches as foci for the organisation of settlement; this phenomenon, which was promoted by the interests of the Peace of God movement, formed the basis of units of population which appear sometimes to have been in competition with the emergent system of castellanies. The last theme concerns the organisation of ecclesiastical estates.

Description: The publication, more than ten years ago, of a rural settlement occupied from the 6th century BC to the 3rd century AD. the farm of The Boisanne in Plouër-sur-Rance, in the Côtes d’Armor Department (Daf 58), permitted Yves Menez to address the notion of indigenous farms. Today, Ivan Jahier revises this question based on the Protohistoric site of Courseulles-sur-Mer, in this case located inland from the Normandy coast. This site possesses all the classic elements of an indigenous farm: houses, fences, outbuildings, storage facilities, an agricultural and pasture area, domestic remains, traces of craft activities, and even a few graves, but distributed inside and around an enclosure wall three to four times larger than most such walls of the Iron Age of this region What was the purpose of this grouping of a number of storage facilities within an enclosure wall whose function was clearly more ostentatious than defensive and which included no more than two or three houses? Ivan Jahier attempts to answer this question through a solid analytical approach. The conclusions he draws and interpretations he proposes shed new light on the organization of society during the 5th century BC and enable the formulation of new hypotheses concerning the origins of the cultural transition of the beginning of the second Iron Age in Normandy.

Description: Archaeological prospection by test trenches covering about fort Y hectares of a future gravel pit and archaeological excavations of about 15 hectares, conducted between 1989 and 1994, allowed a study of human occupation, settlement history and landscape change from the Neolithic to the Roman times. The study area covers an exceptionally large surface situated in the Holocene river plain of the Moselle valley near Crévéchamps, Meurthe-et-Moselle. With about 7000 recorded archaeological features, Marie-Pierre Koenig and her team followed a rigorous methodology to determine how, overt wo millennia, humans settled and lived in a landscape and settlement micro-region impacted by the shifting course of the Moselle river. The scientific approach comprises the grouping of the archaeological features according to their function, a typological analysis of them and the study of their setting in the former landscape, reconstructed by means of different environmental analyses. Due to a remarkable study of the Bronze and Iron pottery, supported by comparisons with numerous sites of Northwestern Europe, the authors suggest an evolutionary scheme of the settlement and its history. This approach is already considered to be a major reference for settlement archaeology. The first land clearing began during Neolithic times. During the following Bronze and Iron Age, settlement density increased. Palisades, roads and trenches followed the natural delimitations formed by the ancient river channels, while agricultural activities on the gravel domes in the alluvial river plain were moved cyclically. Later, the Gallo-Roman population drained and parcelized the land. Farms continued to exist, with Gallic traditions persisted, but human activities became more diverse with the opening of a large clay-pit -until a flood in the 2nd century AD led the occupants to abandon this excessively humid zone. The scientific results are enriched by a meticulous iconography and ample documentation: pottery catalogue, building descriptions, results of 14C datings, an index of the features, general maps and an index locorum. Chapter summaries given in English and German provide international readers with quick access to the main results.

Description: Within the framework of conferences dedicated to the neolithic period, the 16th meeting which took place in 1989 (Archaeology Year), was oriented towards the general public rather than professionals. It was organised to expose recent results of research on daily life, in particular settlements, food production, the environment, techniques concerning ceramic production and the working of bone and lithic material. If specialists can find in these important publications precisions such as the caracterisation of the Blicquy group, the non-specialist can discover the impact of man on the mediterranean forest and the environment of western Armonica; and amongst others, a panorama of the bone industry up to the Bronze age. This diversified approach is a witness to the dynamism ans the quality of recent research on the Neolithic.

Description: This book is the first volume of the exhaustive publication of the excavations carried out in Boussargues, located near Montpellier and a majorsite of the Fontbouisse Chalcolithic culture (2500 BC). It includes the study of the natural and cultural surrounding of the site, and the study of the achieved excavation of the West area and its three habitations. The architecture of the buildings, the organization of the domestic space and the settlement in its natural and economical context are the three major orientations. Thanks to a versatile research team, the conclusions drawn are a fundamental contribution to the understanding of the Neolithic cultures from Southern France.

Description: This book provides a synthesis of the archeological research carried out in the town of Roanne (Loire) It was the site of a small Roman town whose name on the Peutinger Table and in Ptolomey is recorded as Rodumna and whose Gallic origin has been recognised since the 1950s. The small agglomeration of the late Iron Age became a maior centre of population in the Gallo roman civitas ot the SegusiaviThe work includes a detailed catalogue of the finds which can act as a basis for comparisons with other sites in central Gaul. The evolution of the settlement area from the 2nd and 1st centuries BC is described in detail. The study of the linds shows an important analysis of then evolution and the different stages of development in what was a crucial period for the history of Gaul culminating in the « romanization ». The discoveries also allow an interpretation of several aspects of daily life : the domestic architecture, diet industries, trade… Based on the material culture, these studies allow us to deal with certain aspects of the economy and to describe the material culture of theSegusiavi within the regional context. This volume is followed by another monograph in the Daf series on the Gallo-Raman occupation.

Description: Two decades of research on Motte-and-Bailey castles in Provence have contributed new elements to our knowledge of the castle phenomenon that developed at the end of the 10th century. More than sixty sites have been recorded and our prospection continues to reveal new ones. The excavation of several of them allowed us to identify the evolution of construction methods and the organization of these small castles. In the beginning, they were very modest edifices consisting of simple perched houses that required relatively few resources and employed techniques that were easy to put into operation. In the second phase, beginning around 1000 AD, we observe the construction of true fortresses. The study of these first fortifications focuses on the occupation of terroirs organized around a castrum, often noted in texts. The construction of these fortifications seems to have been most intensive around 1000 AD and during the 11th century, but some were erected at the beginning of the 13th century. This ongoing research shows that the early stages of private fortification was integrated in a vast trend of the occupation of terroirs surrounding complex fortifications.

Description: Discovered during the construction of a four- lane trunk road (N 176) near Dinan, the Iron Age farm at Le Boisanne is but a modest rural settlement ; it constituted however an ideal subject of study. One can follow without interruption its evolution during a very long period, from the 4th century BC up to the 3rd century AD. The stratigraphy, the structures and the artefacts are presented in detail. The farm is placed in its context, both geographical (the Rance estuary) and historic (Armorican Iron Age). This study is concluded by a broad reflection, extending outside the purely regional framework: on the function and evolution of “native farms” or aedificia (archaeological myth or reality ?) of the Iron Age and gallo-roman periods.
