    Description: Saamentutkimus tänään is an introduction to the Sámi studies, i.e. the scientific study of the Sámi people. It gives many-faceted basic information of the Sámi people and presents up-to-date views of the disciplines related to the Sámi studies, e.g. history, archeology, genetics, linguistics, comparative religion, folkloristics, ethnology etc. It provides scientifically based knowledge of the Sámi during the prehistory and pre-Christianity, dealing with reindeer herding, handicraft, the Sámi languages, Sámi literature and art and civil right questions, including participation in the international movement of the indigenous people.     Description: Mechthild of Hackeborn represents medieval mysticism. Her Revelations were written down in the 1290s in Helfta, Germany. The oldest surviving versions are in Latin, but in the Middle Ages, the Revelations were translated at least into Dutch, English, Swedish, and German. The text was translated into Swedish in 1469 by Jöns Budde, a Bridgettine brother from Naantali. Budde made few omissions but many additions in the text, mainly explanations to meet the needs of the Bridgettine sisters. Budde’s translation is faithful to the original text, and he made few mistakes. My Finnish translation of the text follows Budde’s version where possible. However, Budde translated an abridged version that omitted some chapters, and the only surviving copy of Budde’s translation is incomplete. I have therefore translated the missing sections from Latin and incorporated them in the text. My translation also includes editorial comments on the language, the contents, and the historical and theological contexts of the Revelations.

    Description: Amandus Ivanschiz (in Slovenian literature “Ivančič”) belongs to a group of today little known 18th-century composers. He was, however, in his own time all over Central Europe well known and largely copied monastic composer. Around 200 compositions survived to this date in various copies now preserved in Slovenian, Croatian, Austrian, Czech, etc. archives. However, only a few of his compositions are available to modern performers. In volume 3 of the Monumenta artis musicae Sloveniae series are published three “Simphoniae” for two violins and bass, i.e. triosonatas, typical for Viennese musical circles of the 1750s and 1760s. The music is accompanied by an introductory presentation of the composer’s works and Revision Report by Danilo Pokorn (1984).The digitized version of the edition (2020) includes a New Introduction as well as Corrigenda by Maciej Jochymczyk bringing to the reader’s attention new information on father Amandus and corrigenda of the earlier edition.

O tem priča ok. 200 njegovih skladb, ki so se v prepisih ohranile širom srednje Evrope: v slovenskih, hrvaških, avstrijskih in čeških arhivih. Izvajalcem in raziskovalcem glasbene kulture je še vedno dostopen le majhen del njegovega opusa. Tretji zvezek zbirke MAMS v sodobni notni izdaji prinaša tri Ivančičeve simfonije za dve violini in bas oz. triosimfonije, kakršne so bile značilne za dunajske skladateljske kroge 50-ih in 60-ih letih 18. stoletja. Zvezek je opremljen z uvodno študijo o življenju in delih patra Amandusa in revizijskim poročilom Danila Pokorna (1984).Digitalizirana po-izdaja iz leta 2020 prinaša dodatni Novi uvod in Corrigenda Macieja Jochymczyka s posodobljenimi podatki o skladatelju in popravki zgodnejšega vedenja.

    Description: In this book, five experienced Nordic L1-didactitians and teacher educators search for their professional roots as pupils, students, teachers, teacher educators, managers and researchers over a period of fifty years. In the form of the scientific essay, various historical professional struggles and processes that may lie behind this professionalisation are examined, partly from a critical perspective: Academisation, theorising, didacticisation, textualisation, and internationalisation, especially within first language (L1), L1 didactics and L1 didactic research. Documentation and discussion of the complex relationship between institutionalised academic operations and personal and collective knowledge development nevertheless constitute a main line in the presentation. The L1 subjects in which the descriptions are anchored are Danish, Finnish Swedish, Norwegian and Swedish. The contributions provide personal, experience-based, historical representations of the development contextualized with the narrators' own research in the field as well as descriptions of general development trends within schools, education, and society. A framing chapter provides methodological and theoretical premises for the texts and a concluding chapter analyses the content of and discusses the outcome of the essays. The book is aimed at anyone who is interested in the development of professional teacher training on a Nordic basis, especially native language and subject didactics. Although Per-Olof Erixon and Sigmund Ongstad are editors, the book has been created in close collaboration with the other contributors, Sven-Erik Hansén, Ellen Krogh, and Jon Smidt.

    Description: This edition contains Four Concert Miniatures for Violin and Piano by Oskar Rieding (1846–1916), composed in Celje, shortly before World War I. Although Rieding’s compositions have been an important part of the violin repertoire for decades and have appeared in various reprints by major European publishers, Four Concert Miniatures for Violin and Piano has been overlooked until now. These four musically delightful miniatures form a longer, self-rounded cycle with the movements Tendresse (Tenderness), L’Aveu (Confession), Le Départ (Departure), and Désir ardent (Desire). The composer succeeded in capturing an affectionate ambience through the violin cantilena. In these distinctly lyrical character pieces, he expressed romantic feelings with his emblematic melodic style. The present edition fills the knowledge gap about this composer who was active in Celje, but also enriches the violin repertoire intended for advanced performers.
    Description: Pričujoča notna izdaja prinaša Štiri koncertne miniature za violino in klavir Oskarja Riedinga (1846–1916), ki so nastale v Celju tik pred prvo svetovno vojno. Čeprav Riedingova dela v violinističnem repertoarju že desetletja igrajo pomembno vlogo in se pojavljajo v različnih ponatisih uglednih evropskih glasbenih založniških hiš, so skladateljeve Štiri koncertne miniature za violino in klavir ostale prezrte. Skladbe so muzikalno izjemno zanimive in tvorijo daljši ter s premišljenim vsebinskim lokom zaokroženi ciklus, sestavljen iz stavkov Tendresse (Nežnost), L’Aveu (Priznanje), Le Départ (Odhod) in Désir ardent (Hrepenenje). V izrazito spevnih in ekspresivnih miniaturah je skladatelju skozi violinsko kantileno uspelo ujeti čustveno razpoloženje ljubezenskih doživetij. V teh izrazito liričnih skladbah se je izpovedno izrazil v svojem značilnem melodičnem slogu. Pričujoča izdaja zapolnjuje vrzel v poznavanju tega v Celju delujočega skladatelja in bogati violinski repertoar tudi na zahtevnejši stopnji.

    Description: Zbornik vključuje besedila treh temeljnih avtorjev zgodovine znanosti in filozofije francoskega razsvetljenstva. Georges-Louis Leclerc de Buffon (1707–1788), največji prirodopisec osemnajstega stoletja, se v uvodni razpravi svojega monumentalnega Prirodopisa (1749–1788) zavzema za specifičnost znanosti o življenju, v poglavju “Osel« pa ponudi presenetljivo izdelan pojem evolucije. Newtonski fizik Pierre-Louis Moreau de Maupertuis (1698–1759) v Eseju o nastajanju organiziranih teles (1754) sistematično in na eksperimentalni osnovi opredeljuje načela dedovanja in se s tem umešča med napovedovalce Mendlove genetike. Enciklopedist Denis Diderot (1713–1784) v Mislih o interpretaciji narave (1754) v slogu Francisa Bacona analizira položaj znanosti v svojem času kakor tudi logiko znanstvenega raziskovanja samega. Vsi avtorji v središče svoje refleksije postavljajo znanost o življenju – biologijo. Pretresajo njene temelje in metodo ter se zavzemajo za njen razvoj. S tem korenito preoblikujejo znanstveno razumevanje živega ter metode preučevanja živih bitij in življenjskih procesov.

    Description: Delo se loteva vprašanja aktualnosti pojma subjekta v filozofiji in politiki skozi analizo tistih avtorjev, ki so ga domnevno najbolj radikalno pokopali: pokaže, da vznik radikalno novega in problematika subjekta zavzema osrednje mesto v Deleuzovi filozofiji, kakor tudi v Lyotardovi pozni misli posvečeni praznini, v Foucaultovi obravnavi biopolitike in biooblasti, v delu Negrija in Hardta o Imperiju, ter nazadnje v Badioujevi predelavi temeljnih filozofskih kategorij biti, resnice in subjekta, na osnovi katerih je dandanes znova možna renesansa filozofije. Ta ima po Badiouju štiri razsežnosti, ki se v delu Vznik subjekta nenehno prepletajo: »V osnovi želja filozofije implicira razsežnost upora: ni filozofije brez nezadovoljstva mišljenja v njegovem soočenju s svetom, kakršen je. Pa vendar želja filozofije vključuje tudi logiko: to je, prepričanje v moč argumenta in uma.«

    Description: Contrary to the secularism thesis of the 20th century, religion did not disappear from the Western experience. Rather, religiosity took on new forms, which emphasized individuality, experientiality, and corporeality, and highlighted lifestyle consumption. These new spiritualities came to be understood as the opposite of religiosity: people identified themselves as being not religious, but spiritual. The book examines new spiritualities as a concept, a phenomenon, and a subject of research. It introduces the history of the concept and the different past approaches in the research field, and discusses the diversity of the phenomenon of new spiritualities, especially in 21st century Finland, through various case studies. The book shows the multiple ways in which new spiritualities intertwine with different sectors of the society and blur spirituality’s boundary with religion, health care, art, and popular culture, for example. The book is the first book-length presentation in Finnish of the field of new spiritualities.

    Description: Knjiga obravnava nekatera pojmovanja odnosa med telesom in filozofijo v 17. in 18. stoletju, natančneje v okazionalizmu, francoskem materializmu in britanskem utilitarizmu. Razdelek o okazionalizmu med drugim obravnava Malebranchevo pojmovanje telesa prvega človeka, ki je določalo njegova filozofska prepričanja, to pa celo do te mere, da je sprememba v njegovi fiziologiji, do katere je prišlo ob grehu, usodno zaznamovala ves nadaljnji potek zgodovine filozofije. Razdelek o materializmu poskuša rekonstruirati filozofijo, ki jo razvija sámo telo, ki je pri Diderotu dobesedno prišlo do besede. Trdno prepričan, da telo ve o samem sebi več, kot ve duh o njem, Diderot razvije filozofijo materializma kot govor telesa o samem sebi. Razdelek o utilitarizmu pa med drugim obravnava Benthamovo filozofijo telesa po smrti in sámo telo, katerega posmrtna usoda je rezultat te filozofije, namreč filozofovo lastno ohranjeno telo oziroma tako imenovano avto-ikono, ki je bilo v očeh utilitarističnega modreca tisto, ki bo po smrti »njegov lastni jaz«.

    Description: Aristotelova Druga analitika, eno izmed del, ki tvorijo sklop njegovih logiških spisov, imenovan Organon, velja v dolgi tradiciji evropske misli za prvo fokusirano razmišljanje s področja teorije in filozofije znanosti. Če je Prva analitika postregla z analizo silogizma kot obliko logičnega sklepanja, se je v njenem »nadaljevanju« Aristotel soočil z vprašanjem, kako slednje uporabiti v znanosti (epistēmē) in ga povezal s tem, kdaj kaj vemo in kakšni so pogoji za njen obstoj. Pri tem izhaja iz stališča, da kaj vemo takrat, ko vemo, zakaj je tisto, kar vemo, nujno takšno~razlago razume kot dokaz o tem. Ta ima zato strukturo sklepanja, osrednja vprašanja v Drugi analitiki pa so zato povezana z opredelitvami znanosti oz. znanstvenega razumevanja, dokaza, definicije in npr. vzročnosti. Delo, napisano z nezgrešljivo natančnostjo in »analitičnostjo« antičnega filozofskega velemojstra, v slovenski prostor vnaša potrebno svežino dragocene zgodovinske perspektive za vse, ki se ukvarjajo s področji epistemologije, logike ali npr. znanstvene metodologije.

    Description: Galileovo delo Dialog o dveh glavnih sistemih sveta, ptolemajskem in kopernikanskem iz leta 1632, »kopernikanski manifest« in eno najslavnejših del iz zgodovine znanosti, je pomemben mejnik v zgodovini človeške misli. V njem trije sogovorniki, pronicljivi Salviati, pošteni Sagredo in preprosti aristotelik Simplicij v štiridnevnem pogovoru razpravljajo o obeh sistemih sveta ter pretresajo njune prednosti in slabosti. Galileo v Dialogu obravnava tri glavne teme. Najprej skuša pokazati, da na Zemlji izvedljivi poskusi ne morejo pokazati niti njene negibnosti niti njenega gibanja. Nato preučuje nebesne pojave (Sončeve pege, gore na Luni …), da bi utrdil »kopernikansko hipotezo«. In nazadnje predlaga »duhovito domislico« o plimovanju morja, ki ga je mogoče pojasniti, samo če dopustimo, da se Zemlja giblje.

    Description: The nineteenth century has been called an age of monuments. In some places even one piece made a difference. This book is a study of the intellectual background and physical making of Finland’s first public sculpture, the statue of Professor Henrik Gabriel Porthan by Carl Eneas Sjöstrand. The idealised but sombre Porthan was born under the influence of German neoclassicism. Development on the project was slow but sure. The Swedish artist had to be supported over three years while he was putting together his first monumental piece in Munich and Rome, after which came another three years wait before the cast arrived to Finland. The bronze sculpture, commissioned by the Finnish Literary Society and raised by public subscriptions from people of all classes, was unveiled in the city of Turku in September 1864. Finns took some pride in the fact that, unlike other nations that had raised monuments to kings and generals, here the first place was given to a scholar. In this study Sjöstrand’s pioneering bronze is placed in a wider context and compared with works by his precursors and contemporaries in the international sculptor colony of Rome.

Študijo dopolnjuje dvojezična (latinsko-slovenska) izdaja Zvezdnega glasnika (Sidereus nuncius), ki je izšel leta 1609, v katerem je Galileo javnosti prvič poročal o svojih odkritjih, prevod Keplerjevega spisa Razgovor z Zvezdnim glasnikom (Disertatio cum cum nuncio sidereo) iz leta 1610 in izbrana pisma, napisana v obdobju med letoma 1597–1611, povezana z osupljivimi Galileovimi nebesnimi odkritji, spremljajočimi okoliščinami in polemikami, ki so jih spodbudila.

The articles in the book discuss the application and development of the cultural ideas of the avant-garde in Finnish art from the early 20th century till the present day. The book focusses on the social, political, and artistic characteristics of avant-garde art and their manifestation in Finnish avant-garde literature, visual arts, architecture, fashion, and music. The book shows the remarkable role of women artists in the development of the Finnish avant-garde. Many artists and groups are presented in the book for the first time. At the same time, the articles highlight connections between well-known Finnish artists and international avant-garde movements that have not been recognized in earlier research. A key theme of the book is the tension between the internationality of avant-garde and the nationalist elements of Finnish culture. The book is peer-reviewed, and its authors are eminent senior scholars and younger researchers.

The collection also reprints Aronpuro’s early essay on the reception of Aperitiff, and extracts from the typescript of the novel’s second edition.
    Description: Tämä artikkelikokoelma on laajin Kari Aronpuron Aperitiff – avoin kaupunki -romaanin kolmea versiota (1965, 1978, 2015) käsittelevä teos. Kokoelma tarjoaa teoreettisesti monipuolisen ja otteeltaan tuoreen johdatuksen paitsi Aperitiffiin myös yleisemmin kollaasiromaanin edelleen ajankohtaiseen lajiin ja kollaasin käsitteeseen. Antologian kirjoittajien valitsemat näkökulmat kertovat Aperitiffin moniaineksisuudesta, moniulotteisuudesta ja monitulkintaisuudesta. Artikkeleissa inventoidaan ja kartoitetaan Aperitiffin laajoja aineistoja sekä konkreettisten lainausten että laajemman intertekstuaalisuuden näkökulmista. Aperitiffia käsitellään myös informaation ja mediateknologioiden kautta. Samalla romaani kytketään suuntaukseen, joka on ollut keskeinen Kari Aronpurolle 2000-luvulla: kirjalliseen konseptualismiin, käsitteelliseen tai ”epäluovaan” kirjoittamiseen. Artikkeleissa keskitytään lisäksi tekstikollaasille oleelliseen menetelmään, tekotapaan tai tyyppiin: faksimileen.     Description: The Centre Party of Finland was represented in almost all cabinets for decades, and it often held the post of prime minister during the reign of President Urho Kekkonen. When Kekkonen’s deteriorating health forced him to resign in 1981, the Centre Party, formerly the Agrarian Union, was in front of the crisis. The party was deeply divided along the lines of who would be the best candidate to succeed Kekkonen. The schism had prevailed for years, and contemporaries suspected the party would split up or at least lose its dominant position in Finnish politics. Besides, the numbers of core supporters making up the party, agrarians, were constantly diminishing. In addition, the Finnish party system was in a state of flux. The Finnish People’s Democratic League was in a deep downward spiral, while the Conservative Party’s support was ascendant. The power struggle between the three ‘big’ parties, the Centre Party, the Social Democratic Party and the Conservative Party, was fierce. The study describes and analyses how the Center Party survived the challenges it faced. How was the cohesion of the party rebuilt and maintained? How did the Centre Party manage to survive the inter-party contests and end up being the strongest party in the elections of 1991? The study is firmly based on source material from the party organization of the Centre Party and other relevant political actors, such as President Mauno Koivisto. The book provides new information on both Finnish domestic and foreign politics and the power struggles among the parties and leading political figures.

    Description: In the current digital media environment, legacy newspapers and their readers are often regarded as obsolete. For media executives and many journalists, the future of news is exclusively digital. Given the economic uncertainties facing the industry, news producers’ eyes are focused on audience metrics and their capacity to shed light on readers' preferences. This book sets out to analyse news reading from the perspective of the audience. Employing interviews as well as the so called obsläs method, it examines how readers of two Finnish regional newspapers, Hämeen Sanomat and Karjalainen, navigate in three distinct architectures of the newspaper: printed, digital replica and online news application. The assumption underlying the analysis is that each of these user interfaces favour somewhat differing reading protocols and routines. The empirical analysis responds to the big question pondered by editors and publishers: Where are the readers? It appears that most of the participants of the study tended to move from one architecture to another depending on their contextual and situational needs. In this comparison, the strengths of a printed newspaper seemed evident for many, while the balance between the pros and cons of the digital environment was more mixed. In addition to reporting the findings of the empirical audience study, this book evaluates the future of newspapers in the context of economic statistics and media policies. While the newspaper business in Finland struggles with increasing costs and volatility of income, it may well rely on the robust newspaper reading culture among the Finnish reading public.

    Description: “Channel Three will entertain you when television gets too serious”, the new entrant in Finland’s broadcast television announced proudly at its launch in 1986. Channel Three was the first fully commercial television channel in the Nordic countries, founded and owned by a group of odd bedfellows: the public broadcaster YLE, its long standing commercial companion MTV and a growing electronics giant Nokia. The plans to start a commercial TV station were first severely opposed by leading politicians, but it was finally approved as a means to fight back international satellite channels and the efforts of major newspaper companies to enter the television market. Drawing from media policy studies and based on archive documents, contemporary media coverage and interviews of the main actors, the book provides a thorough analysis of the stages of Channel Three, indicating how it, despite its short lifespan, contributed profoundly to the commercialization and marketization of television in Finland.

    Description: "Drawing on the debate on mediatization of politics this study identifies cultural meanings, institutional practices and styles of argumentation as three theoretical dimensions that illuminate both the construction of journalistic publicity and its potential uses in political action. Based on the theoretical model, environmental politics is identified as a specific context for mediatization. In environmental politics, the interplay of cultural meanings, institutional practices and styles of argumentation define the construction and use of journalistic publicity in a way that differs from other fields of politics. The empirical part of this study analyzes the newspaper coverage of three Finnish environmental conflicts from 1971, 1994 and 2012. The theoretical model is transformed into an analytical framework that focuses on discursive construction of the conflicts (cultural meanings), journalistic frames, narration and opinion-giving in the coverage of the conflicts and the publicity practices adopted by actors during the conflicts (institutional practices) and legitimation of arguments (styles of argumentation). According to this study, the relation between media and politics in the field of environmental politics is defined by the increasing cultural significance of environmental protection from the 1970s to the present. In the newspaper coverage of the three environmental conflicts studied, changes on the frames, narration and opinion-giving of journalism resonated with this cultural change. However, the significance of environmental protection in the framing, narration and opinion-giving of journalism was greater in the national newspaper studied compared to the local newspapers selected based on their proximity to the conflict sites. Styles of argumentation appeared to be more case dependent. The increasing cultural significance of environmental protection did not have a clear effect on how arguments were legitimated. "

    Description: If the artworld is a battlefield of meanings, the fortunes of discourse did not favour avant-garde art in Finland in the 1910s. The latest trends, introduced by German and Russian artists in three pioneering exhibitions in Helsinki in 1914 and 1916, were dismissed by the Finnish press as foolish and unworthy. This book researches the contemporary reactions and contents of these exhibitions. The works shown in Helsinki included masterpieces from artists such as Chagall, Jawlensky, Kandinsky, Marc, Münter and Rozanova. Today these works can be found in the collections of leading museums in Europe, Russia and the USA. From the Finnish perspective, the turndown in the 1910s proved effective and irreversible. Never again have the local collections had similar opportunities to make a purchase. The rejection of radical international developments and emphasis on narrow nationalistic views left Finnish art lagging behind. This trend was already apparent in 1917 in St. Petersburg, where the Finnish artists were celebrated but their paintings deemed sombre and superannuated.

    Description: Participatory approaches and co-research are increasingly employed in the current moment for exploring barriers to equality. Co-research treats research participants as experts in their own lives and as equal research partners. Research conducted with this orientation is based on research problems drafted by the research participants themselves from their aspirations regarding the research process and an active partnership that considers the interests of all parties involved. Participatory methods are used in co-research, particularly for the purpose of deepening the contextualisation of research knowledge about structurally vulnerable or subordinated groups and to challenge the power positions associated with traditional research designs. In co-research, the role of the people involved in the research is more central than in more traditional research. One of the key principles of co-research is that co-investigators (a) can participate in various roles, (b) have the opportunity to participate in different phases of the research according to their own interests and resources, and (c) co-investigators' participation can take many forms, including differences in intensity. The idea is to provide more people with opportunities to contribute to the knowledge production about themselves and their communities from their respective perspectives and interests. Co-research is also seen as an opportunity to improve the relevance and usefulness of scientific knowledge. It aims to genuinely increase interaction and openness and extend science's societal responsibility. In this book, we approach co-research as a means to promote social justice, as an action with a societal impact contributor to social impact and as a means to promote the societal responsibility of science. We discuss and evaluate the ideals of the co-research process concerning the everyday challenges and practices in research. Above all, we offer the knowledge and experience generated by our own projects to support those planning or already implementing co-research projects.

    Description: Finnish psychiatric practice has been heavily based on institutionalization, and mental hospitals have played important cultural and historical roles in Finland. Our multidisciplinary research focuses on the bodily, spatial, affective, and multisensory aspects of the memories of patients, relatives, staff, and their children. The memories were collected and archived in the Finnish Literature Society in 2014–2015. These 92 written pieces cover the period from the 1930s to the 2010s. They reflect significant changes in Finnish psychiatry and provide crucial insights into the various meanings of mental hospitals in people’s lives, and the social and cultural forces that shape attitudes to and ideas about mental health problems, psychiatric care, and service users today. Drawing on our backgrounds in history, artistic research, and visual, cultural and literary studies, we provide new ways of reading and interpreting the memories and experiences in psychiatry. The study discusses memory, mental hospitals as lived spaces, the history of Finnish psychiatry and the relation between the memories of the different groups of writers. The chapters approach memories from the perspectives of affects and atmospheres, violence and abuse, everyday life at the hospital in the 1930s, feelings of fear and safety in the memories of the children of the staff, and the historically and culturally contingent tensions between hospitals and homes.

Spremna monografija je dopolnjena z imenskim kazalom, v katerem je zajetih 28.075 zemljepisnih imen z vseh zemljevidov.

    Description: The book (' The Energy Needs Of Humanity Through Time: From The Industrial Revolution To Type I Civilization') is about global consumption of energy and its impact on our planet. Energy demand is a quite dynamic phenomenon and depends heavily on technological development, which is particularly evident during industrial revolutions, which had improved the quality of life for the inhabitants, but lead to increase in energy consumption. However~the economic progress did not account for tangible physical limits of our planet, which manifested in rise in greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere and a rapid increase in average annual global temperature. The consequences of this type of behavior are clear – future global warming, rising sea levels and direct threat to vast, low-lying areas, as well as a rapid increase in the number and consequences of extreme weather events such as storms, prolonged rainfall, and the like. A path toward less energy intense future requires rapid reductions of fossil fuels usage but also a radical shift towards larger energy efficiency. The book is intended as a source of key data showing how we have arrived at the current state of energy consumption and understanding of climate change.

While critically registering the international trends, Curriculum Studies can provide an integrative and coordinative framework for national education policy making, curriculum reforms, teachers’ pre- and in-service education and the daily work of teachers. Curriculum Studies is an indispensable element in teacher education programs in order to expand the professional horizon of student teachers and make their tacit assumptions of education and teaching more explicit and articulate. The book consists of ten peer-reviewed articles, which are organised according to three main themes. The first theme, A history of Finnish curriculum theory, would render an effort to explicate and contextualise the historical trajectories embodied in today’s curriculum and education theories and ideals. The two traditional master narratives, the German-Scandinavian Bildung with the Anglo-American Curriculum, have provided the contested platform for Finnish education and curriculum theories and practices. The second theme – The conflicting nature of prevailing teacher education discourses and the need for their more comprehensive and contextualised articulation – serves to juxtapose the dilemma between academic expectations and the actual working conditions of teachers. The role of teacher education is considered vital to dealing with these tensions. Another purpose of the theme is an attempt to expand and complicate the intellectual horizon of the taken-for-granted conception of the curriculum. The third theme of the book, The teacher as a curriculum theorist and curriculum maker, examines how the teacher and the school are cross-pressured by the conflicting interests of school and teacher autonomy and external supervision and evaluation. In addition, the issues of educational leadership amid the ideological tensions of the curriculum and how this complex can be engaged with the role of the teacher is scrutinised to some extent. In particular, the focal point here is the 2014 Finnish basic education curriculum reform. At best, Curriculum Studies can render the institutional education more transparent, vertically by exposing its historical trajectories and horizontally by revealing its present circumstances and political affiliations. As an academic field, the intellectual ambition of Curriculum Studies is to increasingly become aware of the normative, political and knowledge/power dynamics of education under constant negotiation with all its intended and unintended consequences.     Description: Finland was an autonomous Grand Duchy in the Russian Empire during the years 1808–1917. At this time nationalism as well as other ideologies reached Finland from Europe, which strengthened the willingness to change both in society and on a governmental level. The Fennoman movement, which was a movement focusing both on language and on nationalism, became the core of the Finnish self-perception. The goal was to define Finland as a coherent and separate country in relation to its neighbouring countries. Collecting folk poems and learning to know one’s home country became essential. People saw the Kalevala poems as a way to understand and define the Finnish identity and the history of the Finnish people. Especially young people with a background in academia were intrigued by these ideas. University students collected poems all over the Grand Duchy of Finland as well as in the Russian part of Carelia, in Sweden, Norway and in Ingria. Students who collected these folk poems also wrote travelogues about their travels and all this material was handed over to The Finnish Literature Society. These documents are unique and there has not been much research done on them, especially with the focus on how the young academic generation during the age of autonomy defined their home country, their national self-perception, themselves and the commoners living in the rural parts of the country. This book reviews travelogues written by one hundred university students who travelled in the country collecting folk poems during 1836–1917. The book offers insight into how the students described Finland and what it meant to be Finnish. Travelogues can be defined as a sort of hybrid of texts. They consist of a mixture of letters, journals, biographical texts and travel books. Consequently, the image that the students depict of Finland is in this study based upon research perspectives and methods used in textual research, oral history and travel literature. The travelogues written by students previously evoked the interest of researchers who mainly studied certain traits of poem collectors, tradition bearers or poems. However, the travelogues contain plenty of information about the lives of the people who lived in the areas where the poems were collected. The descriptions of Finland in the travelogues do not represent the “real” 19th century Finland, but instead it is a story written and created by university students. The characteristics that are presented in The Land of Hope are based on how the intelligentsia perceived “real” Finnishness as opposed to the uneducated commoners living in the rural parts of the country. The most notable themes in the travelogues are the state and the future of the society and of being Finnish. Another theme is the otherization of those who were uneducated commoners. These themes describe the fears and hopes that university students had about Finland. They also show us that the travelogues were ideological texts about Finland and Finnishness that united the collectors of folk poetry. This book studies the collection of folk poetry in the context of the ideologies during the age of autonomy and it explains what the collection of poems meant and who were involved in it. Furthermore, the book gives an insight into the possibilities to pursue academic studies and it also presents the most essential sources of students’ knowledge about Finland at that point of time.

The articles in this book examine this little researched phenomenon through a wide range of empirical data. Based on Statistics Finland's register data, different ways of combining jobs are classified. Interview material sheds light on the conditions for holding multible jobs. A new perspective is provided by the chaos theory of careers. According to the results of the study, very different paths lead to becoming a multiple job holder. The combination of jobs is influenced by the life path and interests of the individual, as well as by constraints and opportunities available. Motives can also be linked to professional networks, decisions made by immediate family, coincidences or whims. This book helps to understand the diversity of ways of working. At the same time, it illustrates the challenges faced by those who work multiple jobs as they try to operate within simpler models and categorisations of labour. It is essential reading for anyone interested in the changing nature of work, especially researchers, students and policy-makers.

The empirical data of these articles was collected during winter 2016-2017. Method of empathy based stories (MEBS) is a method for collecting qualitative data in which respondents write a story based on an orientation text, usually referred to as a frame story or a script. At least two different frame stories/scripts need to be formulated. MEBS data analysis is two-fold: firstly qualitative data analysis is based on the thematic framework of the research, furthermore the analysis imitates an empirical study and highlights the influence of the alteration of one factor in the frame story. MEBS has been utilized increasingly in various research fields in Finland since 1982. MEBS is in principle flexible and easy-to-use method, therefore it can be applied to explore a variety of research questions. The topics researched can be theoretically sophisticated and structured. They can be based on earlier research as well as to solve questions of more pragmatic nature. Despite the ostensible simplicity of using MEBS, many aspects need careful consideration and decisions need to be made especially in the data collection phase. So the last chapter of the publication concentrates on the formulation process of frame stories and data collection in an increasingly digitalized and diversified society. This publication is the first volume of the yearbook series introducing MEBS and research."

    Description: Die Teilung Schleswigs nach Volksabstimmungen im Jahre 1920 hatte langfristige Folgen nördlich und südlich der neuen Grenze. Viele wurden durch Agitation und Abstimmung tief beeindruckt, sogar die Archive des Gebiets mussten geteilt werden. Nordschleswig wurde als ein Teil des Königreichs Dänemarks einverleibt. Diese wurde von einem nordschleswigschen Ministerium vorbereitet und kam bei der Konstruktion der Grenze sowie in Schule und Kirche zum Ausdruck. Die deutsche Minderheit widersetzte sich der Integration und während der Krisenjahre entstanden extreme politische Bewegungen. Diese Folgen werden in diesem Buch thematisiert, das ein Ergebnis einer deutsch-dänischen Zusammenarbeit zwischen dem Landesarchiv Schleswig-Holstein und dem Rigsarkivet Aabenraa mit dem Studienzentrum für die Geschichte Schleswigs ist.

This publication serves as a forum where various agents in the international recruitment processes can get their voice to be heard. There was a minor confrontation between regional police forces and local youth, but hundreds of similar events happened in small municipalities across Finland. However, after extensive investigations, the regional prosecutor thought otherwise and prosecuted half a dozen local men for rebellion against the state in January 1954. The district court agreed. The municipality was shocked, and the Finnish society was taken by surprise. The case ended up in Supreme Court. This book analyses why and how the last rebellion in the history of Finland occurred in a tiny municipality on the west coast of Finland. The analysis is based on historical microsociology that integrates the insights of microhistory and microsociology into event structure analysis and collective memory studies.

    Description: This volume looks at the Finnish-German military alliance (1941–1944) as a translation zone – a multilingual network of military, administrative and civilian encounters that was held together by linguistically versed soldiers and civilians acting as interpreters and translators. It focuses on interpreters and liaison officers of the Finnish Liaison Staff in Rovaniemi, who were assigned to the staffs of the German army units with the task of maintaining communication between the two armies and assisting German troops in their daily matters. Furthermore, attention is paid to Finnish civilians, especially women whose language skills made them candidates for a range of mediation tasks in the German units. The reconstruction of military interpreters’ and liaison officers’ tasks and mediation agency between the two military cultures is based on their war-time weekly reports, whereas the civilian interpreters’ experiences are drawn from a variety of autobiographical accounts, including interviews.

    Description: The third, online Slovenian edition of the History of Historiographic Thought combines all the original texts of the first (2006) and second (2016) editions as well as some new ones. It is an answer to the specific needs of the community of readers, especially teachers and students of history and related sciences. The book covers over two and a half millennia long history of the evolution of historiography since its earliest beginnings~new (and in some cases old) translations of selected chapters of the major works of Western historical thought, accompanying chapters and biographical sketches form an outline of the development of historiography in Greek and Roman antiquity (including some basic texts of non-historians), a comprehensive review of medieval authors with special emphasis on the Byzantine and Renaissance historiography, followed by a thoughtful selection of early and modern authors. The excerpts from their most influential reflections on the meanings of historiography define the historiography of the Enlightenment, confronts the national and positivist interpretations of the past, presents sources of the so-called new historiography and assesses the impact of postmodernism on the development of past ten years in historiography and the creation of a new cultural history, which inaugurated the 21st century.

    Description: Tässä kirjassa käydään läpi pk-seudun jätevedenkäsittelyn historia ja yhteistyövaiheet aina 1950-luvulta 2010-luvulle asti Espoon näkökulmasta. Tutkimuksen pääkysymyksiä ovat: Miksi jätevesien puhdistaminen on keskitetty vain yhteen puhdistamoon? Miksi Espoossa tehdään ylikunnallista yhteistyötä jätevesienpuhdistuksessa? Miten jätevesien puhdistusyhteistyö on alkanut ja muuttunut vuosien varrella? Miksi puhdistetaan naapurikuntien jätevesiä? Millaista keskustelua jätevedet ovat herättäneet menneisyydessä ja millaista tulevaisuutta koskevaa keskustelua niistä on käyty? Oikean strategian toteuttamisessa tarvitaan yhteistyötä ja osaavaa johtamista. Espoo on voinut historiassa käyttää omien resurssiensa lisäksi vesihuollossa myös naapurikuntien resursseja. Nyt tarkastelukohteena olevan jätevesienpuhdistuksen osalta tämä on tarkoittanut sitä, että naapurikunnat ovat maksaneet osansa ja osin enemmänkin kuin osansa jätevesiensä puhdistamisesta ja varsinkin Suomenojan jätevedenpuhdistamosta. Näiden lisäresurssien turvin historian saatossa kertyneet resurssit ovat mahdollistaneet nykyisen hyvän tilanteen pitkän tähtäimen strategisten päätösten avulla. Näistä strategisista päätöksistä yksi konkreettisin näyttö ovat jätevesiä koskevat sopimukset naapurikuntien kanssa. Sopimukset ja niiden takana olleet päätökset ovat hyvin kaukonäköisiä ja kaikkia osapuolia sitovia. Ne osaltaan mahdollistavat, että valittavana on ollut kehityspolkuja, joita kaikkialla ei ole ollut käytössä. Vuoden 2010 alusta alkaen Espoon vesihuolto on toiminut yhdessä pk-seudun organisaatiossa alueen muiden vesilaitosten kanssa, HSY:n organisaation alaisuudessa.

    Description: Deveta knjiga Historičnega seminarja prinaša sedem razprav, ki se posvečajo zgodovini v najširšem smislu. Dejan Zadravec piše o omembah plemstva v župnijskih matičnih knjigah med Savo, Sotlo in Savinjo do leta 1770. Zgodovino in biografijo združuje prispevek Mojce Horvat o življenju prve mariborske zdravnice Klare Kukovec, zgodovinsko-etnološka študija Daše Koprivec pa izpostavlja uveljavljeno podobo aleksandrinke kot dojilje. Tri raziskave zgodovino povezujejo z umetnostjo – Gašper Cerkovnik se ukvarja s knjižnimi lesorezi Albrechta Dürerja in njegovega kroga, Katarina Šter poskuša pojasniti, kako je zvenela liturgična glasba v srednjeveški kartuziji Žiče, Alexis Bennett pa išče povezavo med filmsko glasbo in pojavom obujanja stare glasbe. Z metodološkega vidika se zgodovine loteva prispevek Miha Seručnika o uporabi sodobnih računalniških orodij pri obdelavi gradiva za zgodovinopisje.
