Description: In times of emergency, communication plays a crucial yet problematic role. While this may seem obvious nowadays, even before the emergence of modern media, the methods of gathering, elaborating and transmitting information had a significant influence on the perception of risk and decision-making processes. The book examines how government bodies and different social actors handled emergencies in the Hispanic Monarchy, from the late sixteenth to the early nineteenth centuries. It features case studies from the Hispanic Monarchy’s European, American and Asian territories, exploring the narrative strategies used in news-sheets and gazettes, the impact of disasters on information networks, how they interacted with political and social dynamics, and the effect of conflicting interpretations of extreme events.

Description: This book’s goal is to determine the significance of visual culture in the production of contemporary poetry and to sound out the insights poetry might generate into contemporary visual culture. Its main hypothesis is that poetry holds considerable potential for (post-)digital language, image, and media criticism. The visual dimensions of recent poetry encompass, for instance, kinetic writing in digital poetry, visual elements in social media poems, and (spoken and written) text-image interactions in poetry films as well as in book poetry. The articles examine these medial correlations and their political implications by asking how visual culture is applied, exposed, and debated in poetry. This volume brings together contributions by authors from various countries working in disciplines such as literary, media, and film studies, linguistics, cultural and visual culture studies, and in poetic practice. It covers poetry in English, German, Norwegian, Polish, Ukrainian, Russian, Serbian, and also multilingual works. The book thus aims to promote international exchange between poetry researchers and stimulate further investigation into current relations between poetry and visuality from additional research perspectives and languages. ; This book’s goal is to determine the significance of visual culture in the production of contemporary poetry and to sound out the insights poetry might generate into contemporary visual culture.

Description: Reflective teaching, which has gained popularity and reattracted scholarly interest recently, can help practitioners of education gain new insights into their own practices by questioning their underlying assumptions, habits and perspectives and taking broader societal and political implications of their teaching. In a world where change has become an undeniable aspect of daily life, reflective teaching is particularly important considering its possible far-reaching contributions to the overall quality of teaching. Grounded in a mixed method embedded design, the current study was carried out to explore (1) overall levels of reflection of the participants, (2) whether certain variables (gender, degree, experience, certification and department) have an influence on the participants’ levels of reflection, (3) how reflection takes place, (4) what tools of reflection are employed by the participant. For the current study, the quantitative data was collected through the Reflective Teaching Questionnaire developed by Larrivee (2008). The questionnaire was administered to 100 instructors employed in the foreign languages departments of eight foundation universities in Turkey. The data obtained were analyzed using SPSS (26) for Windows. The qualitative study followed the quantitative phase and was carried out with the participation of 10 instructors in one of the foundation universities. The qualitative data was collected through the semi-structured individual interviews and content-analyzed by the researcher manually. The findings revealed that the participants’ perception of their reflection levels were positive. The results indicated that the majority of the participants reflected on their teaching pedagogically or critically, though in many cases the variables of the study did not seem to significantly affect their levels of reflection. The qualitative findings also indicate that reflection takes place before, during or after teaching, and diverse reflection tools are used by the participants. The qualitative findings also indicate that there are some contextual factors inhibiting or enabling reflection such as strict curriculum, workload, work environment and flexibility. When both the qualitative and quantitative data are considered together, it seems that the participants’ perception of their reflective practices are positive, but it is also clear from the results that reflection does not happen in a systematic and organized way. Finally, it is noteworthy to state that reflection levels seem to be dependent most on individual factors and choices, regarding that such variables as degree, experience, certification and experience often did not significantly impact reflection levels. To conclude, the present study contributes modest insights into reflective teaching practices in higher education ELT/EFL settings. Acknowledging the positive implications of reflection, the findings of the study related to how reflection takes place and what tools are used can help both researchers and practitioners in the field understand reflective teaching better.

Description: Michael Agricola’s main work is the New Testament, published in 1548, a magnificent quarto volume of 700 pages with a hundred woodcuts. The basic text used was the Greek text published by Erasmus, Erasmus’ Latin translation, the Vulgate, the Luther Bible and the Swedish Bible from 1541. The 450 marginal glosses come from the Luther Bible and the Swedish Bible. In his translation, Agricola distinguished “the Holy Spirit’s own words,” i.e. H. the Bible text, the prefaces and marginal glosses, which were only intended to provide “clearer understanding”. The word of God is much more valuable than the word of man, so that the translator was closely tied to the text. A free translation was out of the question, let alone consciously improving the text. He was able to proceed more freely with the prefaces and marginal glosses. Most of the time he translated verbatim, but did not shy away from omissions, additions and changes when he deemed them appropriate. In this critical edition, Agricola’s marginal glosses on the New Testament are printed in parallel with their sources.

Description: Love for a woman is the theme that engages Italian poets more than any other from the 13th to the late 16th century, and the phenomenon has no counterpart in cultures related to our own. What must be the reason for such success? This study offers an explanation: the Provençal troubadours linked erotic love to a moral problematic, and the Italians, starting with the poets of the Sicilian school, preserved this link but problematised it in a new way, and the same happened with the Siculo-Tuscan poets, the Stilnovists and even Dante, in whom love becomes a scientific and philosophical and theological problem. But enfin Pétrarque vint, and set the story of his love as a 'spiritual exercise', discovering conscience and will as indispensable factors in a heroic struggle towards wisdom and then towards salus eterna. And it was the model that won over generations of 'heroic' love poets. These in turn brought variations: in the 15th century, poetry became a source of 'fame', and in the 16th century, it prompted contemplation of divine beauty. Meanwhile, the natural and indispensable eros in love emerged. Marino wrote a 'song of kisses', and the Adonis was a poem centred on erotic love: thus love's link to morality died, and a new one was born, linking venereal love to aesthetics.

A cosa sarà dovuto tanto successo?

Description: This volume explores the discursive construction of debates around the topic of vaccination, with a particular focus on the hypothesis of a link between the MMR vaccine and autism. The research analyses the coverage of the debate in the British press up to 2019, through the tools of corpus-assisted discourse analysis and in light of the so-called “post-truth era”. The analysis focuses on the construction of medico-scientific debates in the media, in particular on issues of newsworthiness and polyphony. The discursive representation of evidence and the (de)legitimation strategies of social actors interacting in the debate are then explored. A large part of the volume is also devoted to the topic of argumentative narratives and the evidential value of personal experience. Each chapter of the monograph illustrates a connection between these aspects of the MMR vaccine controversy and the Covid-19 pandemic situation.

Description: This volume collects the results of the University of Cagliari's two-year research project "Trafficking between languages: idioms in contact in pre-unitary Sardinia," funded under the three-year agreement between the Fondazione di Sardegna and Sardinian Universities (Year 2020). The main objective of the research was to examine the linguistic contact between Sardinian, Italian and Castilian in the textual production of Sardinia, captured at the time of the transition from Iberian domination to Savoy rule. The synchronic chronological scope is identified mainly in the Sardinian eighteenth century, with some encroachment into the early nineteenth century, but the perspective framework rests on the cross-cultural and multilingual dynamics of the seventeenth century. The perimeter of investigation consists of a wide repertoire of texts written in Sardinian, Italian and Spanish, manuscript and printed, not only of a literary nature: it is a production as abundant and heterogeneous as ever, ranging from legal-administrative documentation to didactic literature, in which the new progressive spirit of the Enlightenment flows, up to treatises of a historiographic, lexicographic and historical-linguistic slant, in which reflection on the question of language takes shape.
    Description: Published

Description: In its route through three emblematic novels of the extended Victorian era, the following volume brings to light the naked expression of a historical experience at the center of modernity development: the rise of the British Empire in its political, social, and economic dimensions, but also and especially in its ethical and aesthetic dimension, through a exegesis that unravels the perennial battle between good and evil as the driving force of history and culture, in the broadest sense of these two categories. This battle, also understood as a universal historical fact, is fought in the field of the psychological transformations experienced by the literary self, embodied in the character of the literary characters and in the way in which each of them becomes a refraction of a particular way of feeling the influence of the West’s civilizing morality -if that is the right way to put it-. Moreover, the characters in each of these works experience a transition from their corporeality and their desire towards a sensibility that struggles to protect their own being from the civilization influence and to configure their own vision of the world, of beauty, of love and even of heartbreak. Thus, the core and interest of the research provided by Professor Catullo MacIntyre begins by formulating the diagnosis of the moral pathology underlying the Victorian novel in the most characteristic themes and plots of that period to lead to the analysis of the semantic dimension of words and the communicative function of images, as a vehicle for philosophical reasoning, in terms of ethics and aesthetics as already mentioned, but also in terms of an exegetical reconstruction of the knowledge of the human being, its psyche, sexuality, and the limits of its individual freedom. Considering good and evil as abstract categories of the rational or moral order and appealing to the same subjective experience installed in the field of existentialism as a philosophical and literary movement, the study appeals in a relevant and timely manner to tools that, from an interdisciplinary perspective, involve keys of semiological, anthropological, psychological, and psychoanalytical type, integrating in an agile and harmonious way the style and method of literary criticism. But beyond that, the incorporation into the philosophical-literary analysis of the nihilistic principle of Friedrich Nietzsche's “God is dead” is a wise move insofar as it metaphorically evidences the rupture of the foundations of knowledge and morality in Western society: it is the death of the values that until then had given meaning to human experience. But this death should not be understood as a form of irreligiousness or atheism, in the strict sense, but rather as the emergence, after the death of God, of the human artist as a creative being, or alter Deus, who comes to occupy the space left vacant by the disappeared God. With this significant image of the death of God, the traditional understanding of culture as a confirmation of the superior position of the human being is restored, a superiority that clearly resonates in the three novels under the object of study. Also, within this framework, the study explores the emergence of the duality and dualism phenomenon in the literary character that is explained and acquires meaning around English society’s historical, social, and political context during the period in question. The connections between psychological transformation, duality, and nature of the literary character, understood in a generic sense or as a literary “self”, will be decisive, since they refer us to the authors' conceptions of the dualistic personality as a reworking or metaphor of human existence and life in its material transformation. Finally, it should be emphasized that, regarding the work presented below, the figure of the double is the most accurate literary interpretation of the antagonistic essence of the human being in its sensible universe, of its conflicting self-outward and inward. Consciousness, that capacity of man to judge itself and to organize the experience of reality from its own subjectivity is at the origin of the appearance of the double in the nightmares of tormented spirits and in the literary creations that are rehearsed about them. In this scenario the double confronts the remnant of its other self, and from this confrontation the endless cycle of life is nourished.

Description: The songs of the Royal Zhōu (“Zhōu Nán” 周南) and of the Royal Shào (“Shào Nán” 召南) have formed a conceptual unit since at least the late Spring and Autumn period (771–453 BC). With this book Meyer and Schwartz provide a first complete reading of their earliest, Warring States (453–221 BC), iteration as witnessed by the Ānhuī University manuscripts. As a thought experiment, the authors seek to establish an emic reading of these songs, which they contextualise in the larger framework of studies of the Shī (Songs) and of meaning production during the Warring States period more broadly. The analysis casts light on how the Songs were used by different groups during the Warring States period.

Description: The solid rightness of image after image in Ken Brewer's poetry was never better than in Why Dogs Stopped Flying. His familiar style is plain-spoken, his humor reliable and self-ironic. Yet, in this collection perhaps more than his earlier work, the particularity of the poet's insight into the physical world and the warmth of his affection for it combine to create an unexpected transcendence. Beasts and bodies are transformed in his lines, and our dim, unremarkable lives on this shadowed earth become somehow more luminous-small words to the moon, small suns opening in the dark.

Description: Eugenio Coseriu (1921–2002) was among the most influential linguists in the second half of the 20th century. Although known mainly as a structuralist and an expert in Romance linguistics, his work in fact goes far beyond this, offering an impressive and coherent vision of linguistic theory that embraces a very wide range of issues. These are presented and discussed here in the first comprehensive monograph on Coseriu’s œuvre published in English.

Description: The question of how to classify the different varieties of spoken Arabic is a long-standing problem in the fields of Arabic and Semitic linguistics, and it has been addressed by several authors and from a number of different perspectives. This collection of articles represents a further contribution to the vast collective effort of attempting to more effectively assess, organize, and understand the varieties of spoken Arabic, applying a classification of Arabic dialects in the broadest possible sense. The authors who contribute to this volume tackle this issue by examining varieties spoken from the Maghreb to the Mashreq and employing various approaches and perspectives, e.g., diatopic and diachronic, syntactical, and typological.

Description: As the visual representation of an essentially oral text, Sylvia Huot points out, the medieval illuminated manuscript has a theatrical, performative quality. She perceives the tension between implied oral performance and real visual artifact as a fundamental aspect of thirteenth- and fourteenth-century poetics. In this generously illustrated volume, Huot examines manuscript texts both from the performance-oriented lyric tradition of chanson courtoise, or courtly love lyric, and from the self-consciously literary tradition of Old French narrative poetry. She demonstrates that the evolution of the lyrical romance and dit, narrative poems which incorporate thematic and rhetorical elements of the lyric, was responsible for a progressive redefinition of lyric poetry as a written medium and the emergence of an explicitly written literary tradition uniting lyric and narrative poetics. Huot first investigates the nature of the vernacular book in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, analyzing organization, page layout, rubrication, and illumination in a series of manuscripts. She then describes the relationship between poetics and manuscript format in specific texts, including works by widely read medieval authors such as Guillaume de Lorris, Jean de Meun, and Guillaume de Machaut, as well as by lesser-known writers including Nicole de Margival and Watriquet de Couvin. Huot focuses on the writers' characteristic modifications of lyric poetics; their use of writing and performance as theme; their treatment of the poet as singer or writer; and of the lady as implied reader or listener; and the ways in which these features of the text were elaborated by scribes and illuminators. Her readings reveal how medieval poets and book-makers conceived their common project, and how they distinguished their respective roles.

Description: This Special Issue features a collection of state-of-the art articles on the intonational patterns of different types of bilinguals (e.g., second language learners; heritage speakers; simultaneous bilinguals), with a particular focus on understudied language pairings and encompassing a wide variety of languages (e.g. Arabic, Bulgarian, Czech, German, English, French, Inuktitut, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, and Spanish). The papers in this Special Issue address a number of questions that have so far remained unanswered: Can we determine a hierarchy of difficulty or transferability? How does prosody interact with other components of the grammar, such as morphology or syntax, in a contact situation? Which aspects are more prone to bidirectional interference? Which changes in intonation make speakers sound foreign in their second (or first) language? The papers in this Special Issue offer answers to these questions and open up multiple avenues for future research. We hope that this Special Issue will inspire future studies on intonation and bilingualism.

Vychází z detailního popisu jazyků a dialektů současného Španělska a snaží se načrtnout jazykovou dimenzi konfliktů, ke kterým dochází v tomto mnohojazyčném státě.

Description: Reflexive language - the capacity of language to speak about itself - is unique to human languages yet little is known of its use in actual dialogue. Fundamental features of language are manifest in dialogic speech and in lingua francas. Both are taken on board in this book, which radically widens our conception of reflexivity in discourse. Reflexivity, or metadiscourse, is central to successful communication. It is also vital in understanding academic argumentation, essential to academic self-understanding, and at the same time it has wide applications.

[English]: In a multifaceted framework of interculturality and internationalization, where specialized language education based on transversal skills is required, this volume aims to stimulate discussion on discourse as a dynamic phenomenon developing at the intersection between language and society. It thus consolidates the interest of the University of Naples Federico II in promoting debate on the need to achieve equitable, inclusive, and sustainable quality education in today’s social context. The essays gathered in the volume, inspired by a European research project (ErasmusPlus, EULALIA), are intended to allow a deeper understanding of the utilization of new discursive types and modalities, taking a cue from three thematic cores: Multiliteracy and multimodality: transversality and future-oriented discourses, Towards a responsible use of inclusive and social discourse, Digital literacies: new discourses and language education.

Description: Tristan Corbière is a poet who tests language to the limits, dislocating normal syntax, revelling in self-contradictory affirmations, and piling up puns. Born in Brittany in 1845, he died at only 29, leaving to future readers a scattered assortment of texts. This collection brings together several less well-known pieces, some early versions of published poems, and others which were handwritten into his own copy of his only published collection, Les Amours jaunes. Presented as a bilingual edition, this volume offers the first English translations of many of these writings, all of which testify to Corbière’s sly humour, linguistic glee, formal innovation and mordant self-irony. Playful and comic, Corbière’s work is also experimental, subversive and moving. The texts are translated by Christopher Pilling, an award-winning poet, playwright and translator. He is a founder of the Cumbrian Poets workshops, which he has hosted for 35 years, a convenor of Skiddaw u3a, and the organiser of translation days and readings in Keswick. He has translated the work of a number of poets, mainly from French but also from Latin. A beneficiary of the Royal Literary Fund, Christopher is also a member of Parkinson’s UK. Oysters, nightingales and cooking pots provides a fitting sequel to Christopher Pilling’s translation of Tristan Corbière’s Les Amours jaunes, published as These Jaundiced Loves in 1995. The volume is edited by Richard Hibbitt and Katherine Lunn-Rockliffe.

Description: Wang Jingwei, poet and politician, patriot and traitor, has always been a figure of major academic and popular interest. Until now, his story has never been properly told, let alone critically investigated. The significance of his biography is evident from an ongoing war on cultural memory: modern mainland China prohibits serious academic research on wartime collaboration in general, and on Wang Jingwei in particular. At this critical juncture, when the recollection of World War II is fading from living memory and transforming into historical memory, this knowledge embargo will undoubtedly affect how China remembers its anti-fascist role in WWII. In Poetry, History, Memory: Wang Jingwei and China in Dark Times, Zhiyi Yang brings us a long overdue reexamination of Wang’s impact on cultural memory of WWII in China. In this book, Yang brings disparate methodologies into a fruitful dialogue, including sophisticated methods of poetic interpretation. The author argues that Wang’s lyric poetry, as the public performance of a private voice, played a central role in constructing his political identity and heavily influenced the public’s posthumous memory of him. Drawing on archives (in the PRC, Taiwan, Japan, the USA, France, and Germany), memoires, historical journals, newspapers, interviews, and other scholarly works, this book offers the first biography of Wang that addresses his political, literary, and personal life in a critical light and with sympathetic impartiality.

Description: Literary writing has always found correspondences in oral performance. One could even think of writing a history of literature 'sub specie vocis'. However, it is with the technological innovations of the 20th century that this link experiences a new fortune, flanking its multiple aesthetic declinations with a growing scientific interest. The volume “The Forms of the Voice” is composed of several essays dedicated to the fraction of contemporary imagery that re-appropriates the sound dimension of poetry as well as prose. Bringing together theoretical reflection, historical and cultural description and philological analysis of case studies, these works articulate a reflection on the different expressions of the relationship between literature and orality in the second half of the 20th century.

Description: Ricochet is a bilingual collection of word sonnets by one of the chief innovators of the form, Seymour Mayne. It includes three sequences of pithy and evocative poems that encapsulate moments of sharp perception while also drawing attention to instants of humour that suddenly appear in daily life. Concise and visual in effect, word sonnets are fourteen line poems, with one word per line. Frequently allusive and imagistic, they can also be irreverent and playful. While informed by other short poetry forms such as the Haiku, Mayne's word sonnets are deeply influenced by the Talmudic tradition of maxims, proverbs and images that instruct and inform everyday life. Presented with an excellent translation of the poems into French, Ricochet is a unique volume that showcases this innovative new form. The collection also includes a short preface by the poet and an introductory essay by the translator on the challenges of translating word sonnets.

Description: This book explores the interrelation of contemporary French theatre and poetry. Using the pictorial turn in the various branches of art and science, its observable features, and the theoretical framework of the conceptual metaphor, this study seeks to gather together the divergent manners in which French poetry and theatre address this turn. Poetry in space and theatricality of poetry are studied alongside theatre, especially to the performative aspect of the originally theological concept of ""kenosis"". In doing so the author attempts to make use of the theological concept of kenosis, of central importance in Novarina’s oeuvre, for theatrical and dramatological purposes. Within poetic rituals, kenotic rituals are also examined in the book in a few theatrical practices – János Pilinszky and Robert Wilson, Jerzy Grotowski and Eugenio Barba – facilitating a better understanding of Novarina’s works. Accompanied by new English translations in the appendices, this is the first English language monograph related to the French essayist, dramaturg and director Valère Novarina’s theatre, and will be of great interest to students and scholars in theatre and literature studies.

Description: The Path of the Ocean is the first anthology of representative Polynesian poetry to be offered as a book of poetry rather than as a ethnological or historical document. Guided primarily by literary taste, Marjorie Sinclair has gathered poems from many sources and from translations with many kinds of expertise. She has scrupulously edited the old translations, modernized where necessary, and in some cases has translated or adapted the poetry. The arrangement of the anthology is rough geographic. It begins with Hawaii and travels southward, sometimes to the east and sometimes to the west until finally New Zealand is reached. As the title suggests, a journey that conveys scope, complexity, and deep humanity of the poetic spirit of the Polynesians.

Description: We are pleased to present a Special Issue of Languages on the topic of Sign Language Emergence. Sign languages are the only extant languages that can be caught in the act of being born and developing with no model, and they, therefore, offer the only empirical evidence for language emergence in human societies. We have brought together a collection of articles on emerging sign languages that contribute a great deal to our current understanding of this process. This Special Issue covers eleven different emerging sign languages around the world. The articles deal with several aspects of language emergence, including, most notably: (1) the relationship between the emerging language and the culture of the larger society; (2) the role of iconicity in the emergence of sign language; (3) the relationship between the shared context in a small signing community and the degree of variation in the vocabulary; and (4) the vulnerability of budding sign languages. Spoken creole languages are also young, but are different from emerging sign languages, in that the speakers of pidgins from which creoles are assumed to have descended already had native languages. One article compares the features of creoles and of emerging sign languages. We are especially pleased with the diversity and breadth of interests of the contributors to the volume, who are based on four continents. The languages that they cover are equally diverse in their geographical provenance.

Description: Literary description emerges as one of the central elements of late antique poetry. It serves a dual role in that it interacts both to represent multisensory perceptions and to break through the illusion it creates through metapoetic discourse. This self-referentiality makes the late antique descriptive a space of intense literary communication between poet and readership in different genres and contexts. This study systematically examines the textual strategies of description in selected works by the poets Claudian, Prudence and Ausonius, who were active between the late 4th and early 5th centuries. The texts are analysed with regard to ancient conceptualisations of descriptio and with the help of modern models of literary and cultural studies. The texts show both a continuation and an intensification of already existing traditions, which are expressed in a productive use of intertexts, a complex mediality and a textual world that plays with distance and proximity.

Description: Over thirty years after the first narratives written in Italian by migrants, this book considers one of the distinctive characteristics of their writing, namely the massive presence of words and expressions in their mother tongue, which are thus kept alive in the new language and offered to Italian readers. The research is conducted on a specific corpus of 157 short stories and novels published in Italy between 1990 and 2020, written by 91 authors from 34 different countries. Over 500 words have been extracted and collected in a glossary: the abundance of graphic variants, the grammatical class adopted in Italian, the languages of origin (at least 30 ascertainable) and the most frequent semantic fields are detected. The diffusion of these migrant words is also considered as a sign of a possible lexical renewal due to the contact between Italian and migrant languages.

Description: This study illustrates why the language of the Qur'an is miraculous, unique, and evidence of divine authority. The author compares the language of the Qur'an with the language of preIslamic poetry, the Prophet's words (hadith), and the language of the Arabs both past and present, to demonstrate that although the Qur'an was revealed in Arabic it was at the same time an Arabic which was entirely new. Original and early Muslim audiences viewed this as miraculous and responded to the Qur'an's words, sounds, rhythms, etc. in a manner consistent with a deeper appreciation of its beauty and majesty which modern ears, trained by familiarity, and despite being surrounded by all manner of dictionaries and studies, are at a loss to capture. The author attempts to remove this veil and present the Qur'an to readers as if hearing it for the first time, to bring to life some of this wonder. In doing so he guides readers to appreciate the beauty of the Qur'an, to become more immersed in it, and to have a clearer understanding of its structure and flow. Devoting special attention to Surah Al Muddaththir (Chapter 74), to underpin his analysis, Saeh thus brings the Revelation to life, to demonstrate that each surah has distinct features and characteristics that make it stand out uniquely within the design and sweep of the whole.

Description: This book investigates how Scandinavian poetry works in the context of digital media from a historical and theoretical perspective. How do digital media intervene in poetic form? How do they remediate older forms of poetry? And how can digital and digitalized poetry, which tends to be particularly self-reflexive, in turn shed light on the workings of digital technology?

Description: In two posthumously published collections of short stories, translated for the first time in English in this volume, the France of Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir is seen through Vian’s idiosyncratic and often rather madcap lens. And alongside them there is another voice entirely, a side of Vian that blends his dry irony with deep, at times startling, emotion. His poems, again published in English here for the first time, give a counter-point to the public figure loved throughout France but never quite admitted into the Pantheon of her great artists. For those who may have read L’Écume des jours or J’irai cracher sur vos tombes, or heard someone singing “Le Déserteur" on the Paris Métro, or for those who are discovering him for the first time, here are both sides of the incomparable and never quite self-coinciding Boris Vian.

Description: This book is an edition and translation of one of the most important and celebrated sources of Old Norse-Icelandic mythology and heroic legend, namely the medieval poems now known collectively as the Poetic Edda or Elder Edda. Included are thirty-six texts, which are mostly preserved in medieval manuscripts, especially the thirteenth-century Icelandic codex traditionally known as the Codex Regius of the Poetic Edda. The poems cover diverse subjects, including the creation, destruction and rebirth of the world, the dealings of gods such as Óðinn, Þórr and Loki with giants and each other, and the more intimate, personal tragedies of the hero Sigurðr, his wife Guðrún and the valkyrie Brynhildr. Each poem is provided with an introduction, synopsis and suggestions for further reading. The Old Norse texts are furnished with a textual apparatus recording the manuscript readings behind this edition’s emendations, as well as select variant readings. The accompanying translations, informed by the latest scholarship, are concisely annotated to make them as accessible as possible. As the first open-access, single-volume parallel Old Norse edition and English translation of the Poetic Edda, this book will prove a valuable resource for students and scholars of Old Norse literature. It will also interest those researching other fields of medieval literature (especially Old English and Middle High German), and appeal to a wider general audience drawn to the myths and legends of the Viking Age and subsequent centuries.

Description: Bathroom Songs: Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick as a Poet is the first book of essays to consider the poetry of one of the twentieth- and early twenty-first-century’s most important literary, affect, and queer theorists. Acclaimed as one of the “truly innovative" poets of her generation by Maud Ellmann, Sedgwick’s work as a poet is, perhaps, less well known, but is no less compelling than her ground-breaking trilogy of queer theoretical texts: Between Men: English Literature and Male Homosocial Desire, Epistemology of the Closet, and Tendencies.

Description: Stitching together a post-apocalyptic history from the scraps of fairy tales, war memorials, hunting songs, and disparate scholarship, Jessica Bozek's The Tales traces the violence that humans inflict upon one another. As the central narrative of the Lone Survivor becomes revealed through the mouths of various perspectives, Bozek investigates the language that victims and perpetrators alike use to make sense of (and attempt to forget) the aftermath of violence. From ordinary objects—family photographs, sweaters that unravel, old batteries, and lightbulbs—to the remnants of destroyed art and architecture, an annihilated nation is brought into reality, and the Lone Survivor's story is simultaneously documented and invalidated, becoming "a memorial that will disintegrate over time, gray and fray as most of the dead did not have a chance to."

Description: Volume 12 of the Archive opens with a study by Yefim Melamed (Kyiv) about the history of Stalin's security services overseeing Jewish writers in the late 1930s and early 1950s resulted in repressions and the killing of many of them. The appendix to his article presents a unique material: the reports of a secret agent who reported on the activities of the "brothers in writing." Grigory Kan (Moscow) contributes to the study of the interminable topic: the Jews and the Russian revolution. His research is dedicated to Aaron Zundelevich (1852-1923), a prominent figure in the narodnik's movement, a member of the Executive Committee of the "People's Will." Roberta de Giorgi (Udine, Italy) focuses in her research on the history of translations and publicationa of Leo Tolstoy's Three Tales, the proceeds of which the author, at the request of Sholem Aleichem, donated to the Jews who suffered from the pogrom in Chisinau. The story turned out to be extremely confusing and fascinating and adds new touches to the biographies of L. N. Tolstoy and Sholem Aleichem, as well as to the history of literary life and publishing at the beginning of the 20th century. In her article, Maria Gulakova (St. Petersburg) publishes a letter from ethnographer and public figure Moses Krol (1862-1942) to Chaim Zhitlovsky. Information contained in a letter from Krol (then an émigré in Paris), dated March 26, 1936, sheds light on a little-known attempt to organize the resettlement of European Jews in the 1930s to Ecuador. Gulakova's research is based on materials collected from various archives in Moscow, Kyiv, New York, Jerusalem and Leeds.

Description: This Special Issue examines English teachers’ perspectives on multilingualism and teaching English in multilingual contexts, implemented or planned teaching practices, and the teachers' intended goals. The research presented in this collection focuses on the perspectives of pre- and in-service teachers in a range of educational settings. Overall, the findings suggest that teachers continue to experience tensions between monolingual and multilingual ideologies and need continued support in adapting to the ever-evolving teaching contexts. While researchers and philosophers of language have been calling for a multilingual shift in education, teacher education and professional development programs lag behind in revising their curricula. Therefore, due consideration must be paid to the teachers; they are the agents of change, but they are also experts and professionals, and their views, knowledge, and pedagogical aims must be treated with respect. Many of the articles presented in this reprint illustrate that collaboration and mentorship between school and university partners can be fruitful, creative, and rewarding. The collection is a call for more opportunities for teachers and researchers to work in tandem to implement multilingual pedagogies that foster equal educational opportunities for all learners across different ages and stages of language development.

Description: Commonly viewed as a revolutionary and propagandist Herman Gorter (1864-1927) is often overlooked despite his lasting contribution to Dutch poetry. This selection of thirty-one poems, translated by Paul Vincent, focuses on Gorter's experimental love and nature lyrics in Poems of 1890, and the Introduction sets the poems in the context of his earlier seminal work 'Mei' (May) as well as his often neglected Socialist verse. The lyrical expansiveness, consistent use of rhyme and vivid imagery of the Dutch landscape that characterises 'Mei' evolves into more fragmentary verse in Poems of 1890, and the joyful celebratory tone of Gorter's poetry increasingly co-exists with a sense of isolation and introspection. This can be viewed in the context of a rapidly changing political scene in Europe in the prelude to the First World War and the Russian Revolution. This is a valuable collection that revisits Gorter's literary and political legacy, and introduces English-speaking readers to a selection of his most accessible and lyrical poems. Praise for Herman Gorter: Poems of 1890 'In his introduction, Paul Vincent notes that in May only fragments have been translated into English and then apparently reveals the loose wrist, his translation of the first twelve lines, as steep and sound as Gorter's text, and as beautiful as The 1890 poems in this bundle: 'A newborn springtime and a newborn sound ...' (p. 3). That tastes like more.' Filter 'A free e-book of Herman Gorter's Poems of 1890: A Selection (UCL Press) is a rare gift to the English-reading world. Translating highly lyrical poetry is probably the most challenging thing for a translator, but time and again Paul Vincent succeeds in suggesting something of the genius of the most important Dutch lyrical poet.' Description: Studies in the fields of bilingualism and second language acquisition have shown that both cognitive and affective psychological factors can influence individuals’ bilingual speech production. More recently, both experimental and variationist studies of bilingual communities have examined the role of social factors on bilinguals’ speech, particularly in cases of long-term language contact and minority-language bilingualism. The Special Issue brings together work on the psychological and/or social factors that influence bilingual speech production as well as work that uses different methodological frameworks. We examine the role of such factors on bilingual speech production in diverse contexts, in order to provide a more holistic account of the ways in which extra-linguistic influences may affect bilinguals’ speech in one or both of their languages.

There are, however, country-specific differences: while in the case of some locations there is only a rudimentary area of Germanic Studies, in others it is quite broadly established. The main purpose of this volume is to trace the existing diversity. The idea for the publication emerged during the 16th Congress of the Latin American Association of Germanists (ALEG) in Buenos Aires in December 2017. Within the framework of the section "History of Germanic Studies", the need for an anthology with contributions in German became evident, in which the developments and perspectives of Germanic studies in the various Latin American countries and regions are reviewed and discussed. Academics from across Latin America agreed to share insights and findings on the aims and foci of Germanic studies for the book project to be realized. Since the institutional framework of the discipline varies widely in Latin America, the initiators assume a broad concept of Germanic studies that encompasses the teaching and research of literary and cultural studies, as well as linguistic and translation studies, teacher training and the teaching of the German language itself. The anthology combines a total of 22 articles from eleven countries, written by 39 authors, and thus provides a broad and diverse view of the situation of Germanistic studies in Latin America. It includes overviews and analyses from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Description: "Don't sit on your stool, watching life go by," insists Soutcho Lydie Touré. In this collection of reflections written over a decade, she explores insecurities and vulnerabilities, with which many a reader will relate. She shares about loneliness and feeling different and goes on to ponder everyday life in "Politicking" and "VDN" - a memorable highway in Dakar which pedestrians must cross "under the mocking smile of the sun." Touré draws on experiences and insights from her life betwixt and between West Africa and North America. In her verses, spiced with nature, color, joy, humor and fantasy, questions and answers compete equally for the reader's attention. A veritable source of confidence in the force of life and love. Confidence that makes one grow wings.

Description: "Noble's work has always engaged, in its own way, with the Western Canadian tradition of poetry as intellectual experiment grounded on local experience.… Death Drive marks a counter-turn in the work of one of Southern Alberta's most distinctive writers." - Chris Jennings, Department of English, University of Ottawa In this collection of poetry, Charles Noble further reins in an already tight form - haiku - only to let loose a "logopoeic" poetry. He presents poems of extraordinary rigour and riddles of wit that are solved by "lifetime" insights - a dialectical poetry that still observes a phenomenological toehold but transcends the limits of locality in recognizing the curled-up-but-everywhere world of media and markets - à la Fredric Jameson. And yet, these "haikus" go straight - to "the shock of the naïve." They turn to a middle ground, in Aristotle's sense of difficult target. They point to human acts, human reactions, and enact, themselves, a meta-linguistic wrestling, at one with the quarreling couple in the bar hanging on each other's words and insistent with "what do you mean by [a simple word]?" But they are also implicated in what he calls the death drive (not death wish), which arcs freely over a human life span - think architecture - and which, more radically, in the "pleated/ crossword," "make[s]/ good// a/ bit/ of/ bad/ infinity," no expenses, save for that toehold, earth, as he would have it.

Description: The monograph deals with the musical practice of bell chiming, which is part of folk music tradition in Slovenia, as well as in some other European countries. Bell chiming is the rhythmic chiming of church bells, which is nowadays a fairly popular musical practice among the older and younger generations alike. The book is based on modern research and, where appropriate, comparatively approaches the material from a historical and geographical point of view. Apart from its musical analyses, which present structural and formational elements of bell-chiming tunes in detail, the book also discusses sociological questions, such as the role of bell chiming in the clerical and also in the secular context, the manner of musical transfer, the performativity of musical practice and the roles of the sexes in bell chiming. Bell chiming is placed within the broader context of European chiming. The detailed discussion of bell chiming in both Germany and Croatia refutes the old myth of bell chiming as a Slovenian national speciality.

Description: The monograph examines the Spanish conditional (cantaría) with respect to the English conditional (would) and the Czech conditional (zpíval bych). The text presents a classification of all the uses of this verb form based on cognitive grammar and Langacker’s notion of ground. The classification is based on extensive authentic material obtained from parallel and monolingual corpora. The analysis takes into account the modal, temporal and evidential characteristics of the conditional. The conditional meaning is dependent on the existence of a secondary ground, which is defined as the default feature.

Description: A central figure during the peak of Tang dynasty literary activity, the poet Wang Wei (701-761) combined a subtle, deceptively simple imagery with a profound philosophical interpretation of the world based on integration and harmony. Although his poetry has been translated in the West, Wang Wei has not received a great deal of critical attention because of the elusive quality of his work. Pauline Yu has translated and annotated 150 of his poems, the most representative selection of Wang Wei in English to date. She corrects previous translators' prejudices for the nature poetry of Wang Wei by including generous samplings of the poet's juvenilia, court poetry, and Buddhist verse. An extensive introductory chapter discusses Taoist and "metaphysical" traditions in Chinese literature as well as Western Symbolist, post-Symbolist, and phenomenological theories as they pertain to the poetry of Wang Wei. Pauline Yu's exegeses opening each chapter of poetry suggest some interpretive guidelines. The individual poems, however, are allowed to speak for themselves and are accompanied only by notes and commentary explaining historical and literary allusions. Punctuated Chinese texts for all translations and a character glossary of key terms and names appear in appendixes—both of these features are unique among translations of Wang Wei's work.

Description: A Śaiva Utopia centers on the eleventh chapter of the Śivadharmaśāstra, known as the Chapter on Śiva’s Discipline (Śivāśramādhyāya). A critical edition and annotated English translation of the Sanskrit text of this chapter is preceded by a comprehensive study of the Śivadharma’s revision of the Brahmanical ‘laws on class and discipline’ (varṇāśramadharma), tracing its utopian vision of a society bound by Śiva devotion. An edition and English translation of a Sanskrit commentary on the chapter, preserved on a unique palm leaf manuscript in Malayalam script, is included as well. The book concludes with an appendix, which addresses the revision of the Śivāśramādhyāya in the Bhaviṣyapurāṇa, where the Śivadharma has been turned into a Sauradharma ('religion of the Sun'). A Śaiva Utopia should be of interest to all historians of Indian religions.

Description: Recent research suggests that there is a direct link between quality of teaching and teacher’s instructions and student achievement scores. Additionally, there is a strong correlation between levels of teaching quality and differences between schools and classrooms. However, measuring teaching quality has proven to be difficult and scholars strive to decide on the what and the how when aiming to measure teaching quality. This book discusses the many dilemmas of measuring teaching quality, be it substantial, theoretical, or methodological. This edited volume presents eight chapters, assigned authors provide updated and new knowledge on the many challenges linked to defining what teaching quality is and how it can be measured. This collection of chapters originates from the discussions at the QUINT Conference 2019: Analysing Teaching Quality: Perspectives, Potential, and Pitfalls, organized by the Nordic Centre of Excellence: Quality in Nordic Teaching 18-20 June 2019 at the University of Oslo.

She demonstrates that the evolution of the lyrical romance and dit, narrative poems which incorporate thematic and rhetorical elements of the lyric, was responsible for a progressive redefinition of lyric poetry as a written medium and the emergence of an explicitly written literary tradition uniting lyric and narrative poetics.Huot first investigates the nature of the vernacular book in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, analyzing organization, page layout, rubrication, and illumination in a series of manuscripts.

Description: In the context of testing and examination, the assessment of texts presents a particular challenge. Since textual competence cannot be measured directly, it is assessed indirectly via textuality criteria. In the field of foreign language testing, a target-oriented text production is set as a task; this is also the case in the DSH (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang = German Language Test for University Entrance). DSH text productions are evaluated by means of an analytical evaluation sheet with textuality criteria and in case of passing the exam reported in three levels: DSH-1, DSH-2 and DSH-3. This paper deals with an investigation conducted on DSH text productions to determine which textuality criteria are characteristic for each DSH.

Description: In recent years, the areas of German as a Foreign Language (GFL) and German as a Second Language (GSL) have taken quite different developmental paths. To unify these contrasts was the purpose of the 46th Annual Convention of the Association for German as a Foreign and a Second Language (FaDaF e.V.) in Chemnitz from 28 to 30 March 2019. The proceedings of this conference comprise contributions from both academic research and practice in the area of teaching German as a Foreign or Second Language as well as the Associations’ resolution concerning the recent German Immigration Act for Skilled Workers. Thematically, the contributions focus on didactics and methodology of German language teaching, transnational networking and the many facets of understanding – from language comprehension to (intercultural) hermeneutics. Opening with contributions from the young academics’ conference held prior to the annual convention, the volume Teaching – Networking – Understanding attempts to unify the many interfaces of research and practice.

Description: The fine-grained morpho-syntactic and semantic variation displayed by partitive elements across European languages is far from being well-described, let alone well-understood. This volume focuses on Partitive Determiners, Partitive Pronouns and Partitive Case in European languages, their emergence and spread in diachrony, their acquisition by L2 speakers, and their syntax and interpretation in a cross-theoretical typological perspective.
