    Description: Internationaliser les questions relatives à l’éducation et l’enfance pour les résoudre à l’échelle globale afin de préserver l’avenir de la planète　: tel est le dessein d’une myriade de mouvements et d’organismes pédagogiques, intellectuels, ouvriers, syndicaux, religieux, féministes, pacifistes durant les décennies marquées par l’émergence et les activités de la Société des Nations (SDN). L’ouvrage enrichit ici notre connaissance, en postulant que le changement d’échelle d’analyse, alternant espaces circonscrits et échelles plus globalisantes, peut mettre en lumière des facteurs d’évolution susceptibles de renouveler notre vision de cette période, et de son paysage éducatif.

    Description: De Friese adel van de late middeleeuwen opereerde in een niet-feodaal gebied dat lange tijd geen landsheer kende. Hadden de leden, hoofdelingen genaamd, zich uit de boerenstand omhooggewerkt of vormden ze vanouds een gesloten stand? Hoe zat het met hun vermogen? Dit boek zoomt in op Rienck Hemmema en zijn vrouw Ath Roorda. Zij exploiteerden in de jaren 1569-1573 een boerderij in Hitzum onder Franeker. Uit Riencks Rekenboeck blijkt dat hij geen eigenerfde boer was, maar een edelman met een royale levensstijl en meer inkomsten dan uit die ene boerderij. Een ruimtelijke reconstructie van zijn bezit en dat van zijn voorgeslacht toont hoe agrarisch kapitaal per generatie werd gevormd en overgedragen. Dit beeld wordt getoetst aan een Quote 200 uit 1513 en huwelijksakten uit 1450-1550. Een belangrijke conclusie is dat de Friese adel getalsmatig omvangrijk was, met veel families die leefden van twee of drie boerderijen. De figuur van de edelman-boer kwam dus vaak voor.

    Description: Het Internationaal Instituut voor Sociale Geschiedenis (IISG) is een van de meest vooraanstaande onderzoeksinstituten ter wereld op het terrein van de sociale geschiedenis, zowel in het wetenschappelijk onderzoek als in het verzamelen en beheren van een unieke internationale collectie archieven. Dit boek onderzoekt de geschiedenis van het Instituut van 1935 tot 1989. Centraal staat de ontwikkeling van het Instituut in de richting van een steeds sterkere professionalisering. Een ontwikkeling in wisselwerking met een driehoek van externe invloeden: de politieke en maatschappelijke context; de ontwikkeling van sociale geschiedenis als academische discipline; en het institutionele en bestuurlijke kader. Het is het verhaal van betrokken historici en activisten, die het erfgoed van en uit de arbeidersbeweging en andere emancipatiebewegingen wilden veiligstellen en voor onderzoek beschikbaar maken. Het boek neemt de lezer mee naar spectaculaire reddingsacties van archieven en bibliotheken die bedreigd waren door de opkomst van Hitler, de ineenstorting van het IISG tijdens de bezetting, en de wonderbaarlijke terugkeer van de meeste collecties na de oorlog. Tijdens de wederopbouw volgde een zoektocht naar een plaats in de academische infrastructuur. Intern raakte het Instituut ontregeld tijdens de roerige jaren zestig en zeventig. In de jaren tachtig vond het IISG de weg naar verdere professionalisering zonder zijn oorspronkelijke bestaansrecht en drijfveren uit het oog te verliezen.

Official statistics in Belgium, 1795-1870, Nele Bracke unravels why and how the Belgian state and its predecessors organized and developed an official statistical apparatus in order to collect numerical information. The study captures the underlying objectives and structures, as well as the methods to compile statistics. Nele Bracke investigates the meaning and significance of government statistics in the 19th-century State and society. In Belgium, early social scientists established an internationally renowned ‘statistical system’ designed to collect information about the country, the people and the society. This ‘statistical system’ was built around the ‘Commission centrale de Statistique’ (statistical committee) and the production of demographic, economic and agricultural censuses. In the first part of the book, the author analyzes the institutional history of the ‘Commission centrale de Statistique’ and its predecessors. In the second part of the book, she studies the censuses.

    Description: In 1869, Dutch military doctor Cornelis de Mooy invented the litter, ‘raderbaar’, a stretcher on wheels. It was a major improvement in several ways compared with the old brancards. It was comfortable for patients and only one hospital soldier was needed to move the wounded. Starting with the Aceh Wars (1873-1910), it became a huge medical success in the military as well as the civilian world. It was gradually replaced around the 1920s. The litter – and some other inventions he made – hugely reduced the wounded soldiers’ suffering and because of this De Mooy was praised by many as a great humanitarian, but in fact it was military efficiency that drove him. A better, swifter and less strenuous way of transporting the wounded was a means of improving military capabilities.

    Description: This article contains the personal account of Sergeant Reinder van de Put of the national police force, based on his correspondence after he was sent to the area affected by the 1953 North Sea flood. It first focuses on the unique letters and photographs that Reinder sent home from where he was deployed in Nieuw-Helvoet. These documents provide an insight into the national police’s work there and his personal experiences. The article describes what the national police faced one month on from the disaster and also provides an insight into the impact of the disaster on Reinder and his colleagues in Doornspijk, who were very close with each other – not only in how they stood together in solidarity but also how they supported each other.

    Description: Entre 1954 et 1962, un quart de la population algérienne fut déplacé par les militaires français et confiné dans des camps de regroupement pour anéantir ce que l’armée considérait comme des soutiens aux groupes armés luttant pour l’indépendance. À travers l’exemple des camps de Cherchell, dans le Nord de l’Algérie, les auteurs relatent les bouleversements subis par ces populations, la fin d’un certain monde rural et les premiers pas de l’indépendance. Cet ouvrage est le fruit d’un travail de recherche et de recueil de témoignages de personnes, enfants ou adultes durant la guerre d’Algérie, qui furent contraints de partir de leur village pour s’installer dans des camps de fortune. Ces récits intimes racontent comment ces populations relativement pauvres, pour l’essentiel des femmes, des enfants et des personnes âgées coupés de leurs terres et de leurs moyens de subsistance, durent recréer de nouvelles vies dans ces camps de regroupement. Emportés collectivement dans les secousses de la guerre, ces déracinés ont vécu, chacun à leur manière, des trajectoires qui les ont menés dans des directions différentes. Ces parcours cassés ont pu, parfois, malgré la douleur et l’arrachement, engendrer aussi de belles histoires.

    Description: On 13 March 1908, the National Bureau for the Collection of Data on the Trade in Women and Girls was founded. The 47-year-old H.J.A. Simons de Ruyter was appointed National Police Commissioner. He proved to be the best person for the job owing to his passion for gathering and recording vital data, his knowledge of languages and his dedicated, helpful and generous personality. The Bureau and the police worked with women’s organisations to monitor activities and carry out checks at stations and ports where women and girls who could be exposed to a lewd lifestyle might be travelling. After legislation on morality was passed in 1911, the Bureau was given an additional task in 1914 to tackle trade in lewd publications. After the First World War erupted that year, there was not much more to do at the Bureau, which led Simons de Ruyter to support the immigration authorities in Amsterdam at his own request. This consisted mainly of finding accommodation, providing healthcare, food, clothing and financial assistance and helping to repatriate Belgian refugees.

    Description: War is usually considered a men's affair, where women would only play secondary roles. Although they are actresses and witnesses of history, they constantly see their experience devalued. Yet, given the scale of the conflicts of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the entire population was affected. Since women have mobilized in different ways, it seems important to promote a reading of the warlike phenomenon according to the prism of the genre. This book is part of this perspective. By collecting contributions from historians and writers, this book describes both the complexity of women's wartime experiences and their representations in literature.

Bien qu’actrices et témoins de l’histoire, elles voient en permanence leur expérience dévalorisée.     Description: Depuis plusieurs décennies, le rapport à la mort et aux morts connaît une véritable mutation dans la société occidentale. Transformations des rites funéraires, notamment sous l’effet de la déchristianisation de l’Occident, diffusion d’un pluralisme religieux, pratiques individuelles en sont les traits les plus marquants. Mais c’est davantage l’acte de mourir, voire la définition même de la mort, qui semblent aujourd’hui changer radicalement. Cette mutation, profonde, n’est pourtant pas un fait nouveau. Elle n’est que le prolongement d’une autre transformation, plus ancienne, qui a touché l’ensemble du monde occidental dès le XVIIIe siècle, où l’on a commencé à déplacer et éloigner les sépultures à la périphérie des villes. La « transition » – si ce n’est la rupture – qui s’est alors produite en seulement quelques générations est venue bouleverser un régime funéraire qui s’était imposé depuis la fin de l’Antiquité, articulant des espaces destinés aux morts aux lieux sacrés, et faisant cohabiter les vivants et les défunts. Cet ouvrage vient analyser la manière dont s’est mis en place cet effacement progressif à travers les siècles, en tentant de dresser une histoire longue des rapports entre les vivants et les morts.

    Description: Marine painting, paintings of ships and the sea, is a four hundred year old traditional Dutch art discipline. In the nineteenth century the genre had a special artistic prestige and status. This study explores the background, training, studio practice, stylistic development and subject matters of the Dutch nineteenth-century marine painter. A Reference List of Marine Painters, which is a new overview of the true specialists in the genre in this period, is added. The key question is how marine painting was looked at by the marine painters themselves, their fellow painters at the artists associations, in art theory and in art criticism. It turns out that within Dutch art circles throughout the nineteenth century, marine painting was perceived as a bearer of national pride. By placing the genre in a broader cultural-historical context it reveals how marine painting, together with the glorification of maritime history, was embedded in nationalist ideology.

Cet ouvrage tente d'allier la rigueur d'une approche quantitative d'un fait social aux suggestions d'une littérature foisonnante, et d'aider ainsi à la connaissance d'un monde ouvrier extrêmement mouvant, en quête de lui-même. De la Commune aux premières ébauches de grève générale, le parcours pionnier qu'il nous propose est devenu une pièce maîtresse pour la constitution d'une sociologie historique des conflits du travail.

Bien que l’évolution du statut de l’enfant soit souvent perçue comme un processus linéaire, sa mise en perspective historique montre au contraire les tensions et les controverses qui nourrissent les conceptions de l’enfance, de l’enfant et de ses droits. Les droits de l’enfant se développent au travers de subtils jeux de pouvoir et d’échelles entre les contextes nationaux et inter-nationaux et par le biais de réseaux d’acteurs. Ceux-ci portent la question de l’enfance et de ses droits au coeur des organisations inter- et non-gouvernementales, leur donnant une dimension nouvelle. À travers cet ouvrage, Zoe Moody comble une lacune importante de l’étude des droits de l’enfant en analysant pour la première fois les processus de genèse, d’institutionnalisation et de diffusion des traités relatifs aux droits de l’enfant dans une perspective historique et transnationale.     Description: En 1568, Pierre Racine de La Chaux-de-Fonds est condamné à la prison par le consistoire pour avoir affirmé que tout ce que disaient les pasteurs n’était pas vrai et qu’on était bien fou de les croire. Cette déclaration témoigne de la difficulté d’imposer dans les Montagnes la Réformation votée en 1530 par les bourgeois de la ville de Neuchâtel. Cet ouvrage décrit la discipline qui encadre dès lors les paroissiens, comme dans tous les pays protestants, mais plus longtemps qu’ailleurs, jusqu’en 1848. Il étudie la mise en place progressive entre 1530 et 1560 de ce carcan disciplinaire dans le comté de Neuchâtel et la seigneurie de Valangin, cadre principal de cette étude, non sans tensions entre l’Église et le gouvernement. On voit naître une situation particulière dans le concert des pays réformés : ni Berne la zwinglienne, ni Genève la calviniste, Neuchâtel a inventé son propre modèle. Cette étude passe en revue les trois siècles d’existence des consistoires neuchâtelois, confrontant l’immobilisme des institutions à l’évolution inévitable de la société sous l’influence des Lumières, de la laïcisation, de courants dissidents au sein même de l’Église, de la situation politique des pays voisins. Fondée sur l’analyse de milliers d’affaires, cette enquête lève le voile sur la vie quotidienne, les travaux, les amours, les révoltes d’une population modeste, essentiellement rurale, dont la voix avait peu de chances d’être entendue par le biais d’autres sources.

Le récit du passé qui s’accumule dans les livres n’est-il pas cette chose inerte destinée à éclairer le présent ? Pourtant, litiges et controverses quant aux « vérités » que l’histoire prétend fonder ébranlent les certitudes. L’une des conséquences de l’impuissance de l’histoire à asseoir ce qui serait une certaine vérité du passé, c’est d’attirer à elle ceux qui voudraient s’y inscrire rétroactivement en invoquant les injustices mémorielles dont ils auraient été victimes. Si l’histoire s’ouvre ainsi à tout venant, c’est que la société elle-même n’est plus certaine de son identité non plus que du parcours qui l’a conduite jusqu’à elle-même. Dans les sociétés contemporaines où s’achève cet éclatement de la référence collective, on observe ainsi l’encombrement des acteurs se précipitant au cœur de l’histoire espérant y inscrire la mémoire de leur propre parcours.

    Description: Comment expliquer la popularité du football à l’échelle européenne ? Une des pistes pour répondre à cette question est d’étudier le rôle de l’Union des associations européennes de football (UEFA) qui n’a eu de cesse d’agir en vue de renforcer les échanges footballistiques au niveau européen. À partir du dépouillement d’archives inédites, ce livre répond à un vide historiographique en proposant de retracer la genèse et la formation de l’UEFA dans une perspective globale et qui privilégie le long terme. Nous défendons ici la thèse que la mise en place de cette organisation au milieu des années 1950 est un tournant dans l’histoire du football européen. Trois axes principaux complémentaires sont développés tout au long de cet ouvrage. Le premier traite du rôle de la FIFA (Fédération internationale de football association), puis de l’UEFA dans le développement d’une dynamique européenne du jeu. Le deuxième questionne la possibilité qu’ont les dirigeants du football de créer un organisme qui transcende les barrières de la Guerre froide (à sa fondation, l’UEFA compte une trentaine de pays européens). Finalement, le troisième interroge les raisons de la constitution de l’UEFA durant les années 1950 ainsi que le modèle d’organisation choisi par ses promoteurs.

    Description: Les objets techniques, leur manipulation, sont presque toujours renvoyés au masculin. Or, ce stéréotype n’est que partiellement vrai une fois que l’on s’est efforcé de mener une analyse fine des rapports entre genre et techniques, ambition de tous les auteurs de ce livre. Dans l’historiographie francophone, comme le lien entre genre et techniques a été rarement effectué, les principales questions à la croisée de ces deux thématiques doivent encore être étudiées et les réponses déjà apportées approfondies. Ainsi, l’étude du rapport entre les femmes et les techniques n’est qu’une première approche qui doit être étendue dans le cadre d’une problématique plus large tenant compte de tous les aspects du genre, notamment les questions liées à la masculinité. Ces aspects méritent d’ailleurs une attention toute particulière, dans le sens où l’enseignement technique contribue à la construction d’un certain type de masculinité, reproduisant, par exemple, des différences genrées à l’école et dans les milieux professionnels. Les différents textes rassemblés dans cet ouvrage permettent de s’interroger sur une thématique innovante. Si les travaux d’historiens dominent, le sujet abordé rend néanmoins nécessaire une approche pluridisciplinaire. La sociologie, la philosophie et l’anthropologie apportent donc également ici un éclairage sur les liens qui peuvent exister entre genre et techniques.

    Description: Paris, Kuala Lumpur, New York, Doha, Berlin, Honolulu, La Chaux-de-Fonds: each of these cities hosts a museum of Islamic art, and many more can be added to this list. Since the 2000s, and in particular after the 9/11 attacks, more and more cultural institutions have invested in this sector. In this context of international museums’ “Islamania”, for the very first time this book looks at the case of France, through the examples of the Louvre Museum and the Institut du monde arabe. By analyzing the staging of Islam, from the Colonial Exhibitions of the 19th century to the present day, this work shows how such staging is the reflection of public policies regarding the Muslim religion and how the French State uses it to manage Islamic otherness. More broadly, the museums’ treatment of Islam makes it possible to reflect on the regulation of religion and consequently on secularism. It also illustrates the political and social tensions caused by the presence of Islam in France and, by extension, the place of the Other in now multicultural and globalized Western societies. “Islam of museums” thus goes beyond mere observation of the history of an artistic genre, it provides a new perspective on our cultural, political, social, and religious history.

    Description: What makes a happy city? How can a city respond adequately and resiliently to a crisis disrupting civic society? Answers to these timeless questions differ through time. A Miracle of St Martin – Utrecht a Happy City tells the story of Utrecht and St Martin. At the occasion of Utrecht’s 900th anniversary as a free city, the book elucidates how the bond between Utrecht and its patron saint since the early Middle Ages inspired people to contribute to a happy city. The book is designed as a diptych, focusing first on St Martin’s Utrecht patronage around the year 900, when the settlement built within the walls of the former Roman castellum endured difficult times due to political and climatological troubles. Bishop Radbod (899/900-917) calls upon his fellow citizens to cultivate the commemoration of St Martin and to appeal to the saintly figure in times of hardship. The book includes a translation of Radbod’s Miracle Story of St Martin and unravels the secrets of his Gregorian office for the summer feast of St Martin’s Translation on July 4th. The second part of the book focuses on St Martin’s role in the multicultural twenty-first-century city of Utrecht. The popular St Martin’s Parade establishes a new celebration of the saint with music, street art and a parade of lights. Reflecting on this newly (re-)invented tradition we discover St Martin anew as a symbolic figure representing values of the inclusive city in past and present. The book is lavishly illustrated with images of St Martin and his cult in medieval and modern-day Utrecht.

Men and women both escape from received gender roles, often far from traditional standards. Refusing to face the upheavals of the nineteenth century, they remain attached to an immutable past thus putting themselves in danger.     Description: Depuis presque 200 ans, la mondialisation, cette phase d’accélération sans précédent des relations sociales et des contacts interculturels, caractérise aussi bien notre univers mental qu’elle définit l’horizon de nos pratiques quotidiennes. Ce livre s’attache à en saisir toute la complexité. Il entend à la fois saisir des représentations du mondial, se pencher sur les ambassadeurs de la mondialité aux XIXe et XXe siècles, réfléchir à l’articulation du global et du local, et analyser la configuration politique globale avec les nouvelles formes de gouvernance. À l’issue de ces études, il ressort que si le monde est dorénavant unique, il est loin d’être uniforme. Selon les termes du philosophe canadien Charles Taylor, « une profonde diversité » semble même dominer par-delà les fausses impressions d’uniformité. L’ensemble de ces contributions dessine un monde global dans lequel les individus échappent à la généralisation et à l’essentialisation mais relève d’un « tiers-espace », selon Homi Bhabba, où les identités se négocient en permanence au fil des circonstances offertes par un monde à la fois homogénéisé et fragmenté. Finalement, selon les mots du poète Pablo Neruda, les êtres mondialisés s’apparentent un peu à des « arbres ailés » quand les racines du local montent au ciel du global.

Zij hadden niet alleen een wetenschappelijke opleiding nodig, maar moesten gedurende hun beroepsuitoefening ook voortdurend gevoed worden met informatie uit wetenschap en praktijk om de voortgaande ontwikkelingen bij te houden en mede vorm te geven. Dit boek beschrijft hoe de redacties en de uitgevers van professionele tijdschriften zich hebben ingespannen om hun rol als informatiemakelaar goed te vervullen. Verder laat het zien hoe zij hun product voortdurend hebben aangepast aan de steeds hogere eisen van lezers wat betreft toegankelijkheid en vormgeving. Ten laatste is er aandacht voor de wijze waarop zij steeds de bedrijfseconomische voorwaarden hebben vervuld om de continuïteit van hun werk te verzekeren. Zonder deze professionele tijdschriften was Nederland niet geworden wat het nu is.

Poser ainsi la question, c’est y répondre positivement, mais au rebours de l’historiographie qui considère le jour comme le seul cadre temporel digne d’analyse. Loin d’être seulement « faite pour dormir », la nuit possède cependant ses coutumes et ses rythmes, assortis en Europe à la multitude des régions et des milieux sociaux. Jouant du ressort de la peur du crime, les pouvoirs régaliens ont tenté depuis longtemps — mais pas toujours avec succès — de contrôler la vie nocturne, notamment par le moyen de la police urbaine et de l’éclairage public. Ces intrusions sécuritaires sont à leur tour à l’origine d’une transformation de la vie nocturne.

    Description: The Orthodox Reform is the first comprehensive sociohistorical account of the century-long process of the conservative renovation of the Greek orthodox church, a process that saw the passage to a “modern” religion, religious innovation and social activism come to rime with intolerance on both the religious and political fields. Based on extensive research in public and religious archives of Greece, France and the Vatican as well as an impressive array of pamphlets and periodicals published all around the Eastern Mediterranean, it paints an unprecedented picture of what can be called the Greek-orthodox component of late ottoman confessionalization. Challenging the narratives of an uninterrupted link between an immutable orthodox Church entrenched in tradition and a Greek national state practising religious intolerance ever since its foundation, it argues that the current religious-political configuration in Greece is the product of the major transformations occurring during the Interwar when the zeal of orthodox activists from Greece and the Ottoman empire took advantage of the unparalleled social and national crisis following the 1922 Katastrophi to finally impulse what can be justly called the orthodox version of Reform and usher in a Greek-orthodox modernity.

    Description: In the early 20th Century, exhibitions and international fairs were a favoured field for Swiss businesses that wished to conquer new territories in foreign markets. The way in which Switzerland was represented abroad challenged traditional regional construction by substituting more geometrical lines, thereby replacing the ‘chalet style’. The ‘genesis’ of the Swiss style of exhibition, between commercial expansion and modern architecture, is depicted here beyond that of a purely institutional history, providing a new viewpoint into its economic and artistic aspects. Particular atten-tion is given to the role of certain ‘intermediaries’ in the creation and diffusion of a visual culture to a commercial action.
    Description: Durant la première moitié du XXe siècle, les expositions et les foires internationales constituent un terrain d’affrontement privilégié entre les différents acteurs de la politique d’exposition. Alors que les entreprises suisses cherchent à conquérir de nouvelles positions sur les marchés extérieurs, la manière de représenter la Suisse à l’étranger fait particulièrement débat. Aux traditionnelles constructions régional-istes se substituent des aménagements aux lignes épurées, conçus selon les princi-pes fonctionnalistes de la « construction nouvelle ». Désigné dès le milieu des années 1930 sous le terme de « style suisse », ce nouveau visage de l’architecture d’exposition, simple et rationnel, rompt avec le vocabulaire formel du « style chalet », si souvent privilégié dans les expositions universelles du tournant du XXe siècle. Loin de constituer un phénomène isolé, ces reconfigurations témoignent d’un mouvement plus large de rationalisation de l’organisation commerciale. Dans le sillage de la Première Guerre mondiale, des publications spécialisées aux foires modernes, l’efficience visuelle devient en effet un instrument incontournable de la « lutte pour les débouchés » commerciaux. La genèse du « style suisse » d’exposition, conçue comme le fruit d’une collabora-tion étroite entre les acteurs de l’expansion commerciale et du mouvement de l’architecture moderne, est au coeur du présent ouvrage. Au-delà d’une histoire purement institutionnelle, ce livre apporte un éclairage inédit sur les enjeux économiques et artistiques de la politique d’exposition. Il prête une attention par-ticulière au rôle de certains « passeurs » dans la formulation et la diffusion d’une culture visuelle de l’action commerciale.

    Description: This book treats the spectacular rise in life expectancy during the last three centuries. It is the first study to bring together both published and unpublished material about the history of the health of Belgian men and women and to analyze it critically. Isabelle Devos studies the mechanisms of the historic fall in the death rate in an original manner and answers the question why research on the causes of this decline has not progressed faster. While the discipline of historical demography orients the first part of her book, the discipline of historical epidemiology provides the perspective taken in the second part, in which the role of insects as spreaders of disease is explored. Essential in her study is the importance of local medical practitioners who already at the end of the Ancien Régime warned of the dangers present in the environment. Their ‘ecological’ thinking created a consciousness that was decisive for the further development of healthcare.

Cet ouvrage tente d’allier la rigueur d’une approche quantitative d’un fait social aux suggestions d’une littéraire foisonnante, et d’aider ainsi à la connaissance d’un monde ouvrier extrêmement mouvant, en quête de lui-même. De la Commune aux premières ébauches de grève générale, le parcours pionnier qu’il nous propose est devenu une pièce maîtresse pour la constitution d’une sociologie historique des conflits du travail.

    Description: Social poisons analyse why and how, at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries, the consumption of toxic substances became a social issue that stirred up great concern among contemporaries. By using a wide variety of sources (legislative texts, police archives, diplomatic documents, criminological, medical and psychiatric publications, press articles, literary works and other artistic creations, such as the popular rebetika songs), the book sheds a new light on the advent of “drug addiction”. This complex historical process had numerous features: it included the medical and recreational use of psychoactive substances, restrictive policies on the production, trade and consumption of narcotics, as well as broader and historically defined fears of Greek society, in a period that was in many respects transitional. Indeed, it was during this time that Greek territory and population more than doubled, when the question of modernisation was raised emphatically, and developments, such as the mass arrival of new populations, the redefinition of women’s role, and the emergence of new ideological currents, swayed traditional points of reference and the established order.The book addresses these aspects, and documents the form and extent of drug use in Greece by setting it in its legislative, social and cultural framework on the one hand, and in the broader context of the history of narcotics in Eastern Mediterranean, Europe and the world on the other. In doing so, Social Poisons offer both an original and unconventional viewpoint on the history of Greece at the early 20th century, and a historical background for contemporary discussions and public debate on drug policies.

    Description: The Cold War was a tense time. The Netherlands took precautions to protect its people from potential disasters, in particular nuclear threats. One crucial aspect of this was the establishment of the Civil Defence Corps. The organisation played a key role in setting up command stations and training centres, such as the one in Overvoorde, Rijswijk, near The Hague, which ran exercises and training to prepare people for possible disasters. From large practice ruins to advanced alarm systems, the complex was fully equipped to deal with a broad range of threats. Although the threat of a nuclear attack subsided and the Civil Defence was officially disbanded in 1985, these command stations retained their importance. Many of them have since been repurposed, from storage sites to museums. The bunkers in Overvoorde now serve as an educational centre under the management of Korpora, the Public Safety Heritage Centre. By preserving these sites, we can ensure that future generations can learn from the past and the sacrifices that were made for their safety.

    Description: This book addresses the question of vigilance in the face of an epidemic at the beginning of the 18th century, based on the example of the fight against the plague in the French Mediterranean. Because of its trans-Mediterranean trade, this region was particularly exposed to the risk of plague so that it sought to protect itself with concrete measures such as quarantine. ; Cet ouvrage s’intéresse au risque et à la vigilance face à la peste sur la côte méditerranéenne française dans la première moitié du 18e siècle. Entre 1720 et 1722, une terrible épidémie de peste frappe Marseille, la Provence, le Comtat-Venaissin et une partie du Languedoc, causant environ 100'000 décès. Aussi dramatique soit-elle, cette épidémie constitue une exception durant la première moitié du 18e siècle. La première partie de ce travail analyse les rapports entre vigilance, espace et communication et met en évidence une prévention qui s’exerce tant de manière transméditerranéenne que de manière interne au royaume de France. Une véritable «bureaucratie sanitaire» se met en place. La deuxième partie étudie les normes et les pratiques de la vigilance sanitaire, tant sur un plan politico-sanitaire (quarantaines des navires, des passagers et des marchandises) que sur un plan religieux (processions et prières pour endiguer la maladie). Enfin, la dernière partie se limite à la peste de 1720-1722 et illustre le passage d’une vigilance préventive à une vigilance réactive en s’intéressant aux «acteurs de la peste» et aux attitudes et tactiques développées face au fléau épidémique.

    Description: Les jeux d’argent sont aujourd’hui considérés comme l’un des secteurs légi-times de l’industrie du divertissement. Dans les années 1990, diverses formes d’opposition à cette industrie ont émergé en Amérique du Nord, sans toutefois réussir à construire un mouvement social à large échelle. Ces op-positions ont la plupart du temps pris la forme de campagnes locales peu organisées et sporadiques, lancées pour faire échouer des modifications de législation ou contre certains projets spécifiques. Ce livre étudie spécifiquement l’une de ces coalitions observée dans la ré-gion de Vancouver, au Canada, à partir d’une série de controverses qui se sont succédées sur une dizaine d’années. Le mouvement antijeu local est analysé comme l’expression d’un engagement citoyen et politique.     Description: This book tells the story of Utrecht University’s colonial past. Ever since the university was founded in 1636, its scholars and students have been involved in various activities in the Dutch colonies of the West and East Indies. There was a great interest in the world of the 'other' far away: the natural world as well as their cultures, languages and religious systems. The basic assumption always was: we are 'developed', they are 'not yet developed'. Superiority served as guiding principle. By the end of the nineteenth century, Utrecht’s research activities in the colonies were dominated by biology, medicine, geology, and physical anthropology/anatomy. It was understood to be 'pure research' in the colonies. But it was pure colonial research. The University benefited enormously from those research activities. The latest phase of 'university development cooperation' (since the 1980s), was to some extent a continuation of that approach.
