Description: In recent decades the clinical condition of the permanent vegetative state has raised debates regarding the treatment of those patients who, as a result of brain damage, have irreversibly lost consciousness while biologically continuing to live. The media have also provided ample coverage of celebrated cases, such as those of Karen Quinlan, Anthony Bland, Terry Schiavo and Eluana Englaro. Behind these names are the stories of individuals, moral dilemmas that incite reflection and throw down challenges to the law. This book contains essays by experts in various disciplinary areas – philosophy, religion and law – and is designed to offer a contribution to the debate, so as to clarify which instruments can best protect human rights and dignity even in borderline clinical situations.

Description: It is not a heavenly, but rather a hellish Dante, who hovers over Ukrainian poetry of the twentieth century. He supports the persecuted rather than the adepts of the Soviet regime, who are mere functionaries. Dante leads the way for the stoic Ukrainian poets, such as Mykola Zerov, Iurij Klen, Vasyl’ Stus, and Lina Kostenko, who are fully aware of the risks they take in aspiring to longed-for moral freedom.

Description: This work thoroughly explores the world of boxing from an interdisciplinary perspective. Building upon the text of "gymnasticus" written by the rhetorician Lucius Flavius Philostratus, the author develops an innovative methodological hypothesis, involving the disciplines of philosophy, history, and cognitive and motor sciences. Through a philosophical analysis of contemporary authors such as Hadot, Foucault, and Deleuze, the author incorporates their insights and applies them to the current context of sports science. The main objective is to overcome the mind-body dualism, fully recognizing the emotional and desirous aspects in boxing practice. This volume aspires to provide the foundations for future research in the field of athlete training and development.

Description: Affectivity – especially the emotions – are proved to be a key-point of ethical formation. This book aims at clarifying which thesis the neo-aristotelian Virtue Ethics hold about emotion education, by integrating philosophy of education, philosophy of emotions and moral epistemology. Virtue Ethics, compared to deontology and utilitarianism-consequentialism, offers the more appropriate framework to conceive the relations between education, emotions and ethics. The volume discusses cognitive-evaluative theories of emotions and address the anti-rationalist challenge, based on empirical evidence about how emotions impact on moral judgments. Anti-rationalism, it is argued, is incompatible with the purpose of shaping the emotions looking at our best moral reasons. Then, two Aristotelian educational theses are put forward: all the emotional dispositions – both ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ – should be cultivated, and all the emotional dispositions admit an appropriate moral form.

Description: Pantaleoni and Pareto re-established economic theory on the basis of homo oeconomicus which, despite criticisms, went on to become a strangely popular concept, not only among economists, but even in common parlance, where it has assumed a confusing variety of meanings. With a view to setting things in order, this book distinguishes: the methodological hypotheses, which could possibly be corrected on the basis of new economic psychology; the weak anthropologies, retrievable as 'given abstractions' within typical contexts; and finally the extreme versions, that reduce human nature to absolute egoism. The author makes a radical criticism of the latter, drawing upon the extensive tools derived from psychology, philosophical anthropology and political philosophy, and thus succeeds in demonstrating their lack of empirical foundation, their conceptual inconsistency and their ideological dangerousness.

Description: For centuries, the philosophical thought has questioned notions such as "person", "value" and "quality" of life, "rights", "suffering", "life", "death"; but the problems that have arisen in recent decades due to the application of life-prolonging technologies have led to a rethinking of the philosophical and everyday meanings and uses of these notions. This book intends to be a reflection on some aspects of the debate on the moral lawfulness of non-voluntary euthanasia, through a critical discussion of the main philosophical notions used by bioethics.

Description: The 43rd UID conference, held in Genova, takes up the theme of ‘Dialogues’ as practice and debate on many fundamental topics in our social life, especially in these complex and not yet resolved times. The city of Genova offers the opportunity to ponder on the value of comparison and on the possibilities for the community, naturally focused on the aspects that concern us, as professors, researchers, disseminators of knowledge, or on all the possibile meanings of the discipline of representation and its dialogue with ‘others’, which we have broadly catalogued in three macro areas: History, Semiotics, Science / Technology. Therefore, “dialogue” as a profitable exchange based on a common language, without which it is impossible to comprehend and understand one another; and the graphic sign that connotes the conference is the precise transcription of this concept: the title ‘translated’ into signs, derived from the visual alphabet designed for the visual identity of the UID since 2017. There are many topics which refer to three macro sessions: - Witnessing (signs and history) - Communicating (signs and semiotics) - Experimenting (signs and sciences) Thanks to the different points of view, an exceptional resource of our disciplinary area, we want to try to outline the prevailing theoretical-operational synergies, the collaborative lines of an instrumental nature, the recent updates of the repertoires of images that attest and nourish the relations among representation, history, semiotics, sciences.

Description: This book encompasses a profound meditation on the twentieth-century fortunes of historicism as a philosophical model. After a reconstruction of its decline (as a unified and compact philosophical "ism" and as the direct heir of idealism, especially in Italy) and of its persistence as a philosophical style, the volume then penetrates the frontier of the neo-historicisms, probing two of their European faces in the shape of José Ortega y Gasset and Theodor W. Adorno. It then goes on to develop various Italian paths: from Fazio-Allmayer to Garin (and his school) from Dal Pra to Massolo, and up to Preti (was he really an "anti-historicist"?). In all these paths the centrality of historicism and its post-metaphysical aspect are clearly focused, as also in the case of the School of Naples, which now represents the most outstanding and significant heir to such critical (and open) neo-historicism.

Description: In our age now deprived of the traditional metaphysical certainties, to study the moral dimension of subjectivity in Hegel's The Phenomenology of Spirit is to make one's object of investigation that which is one of the themes of greatest philosophical interest, precisely owing to its great topicality. Hegel deals with the moral issue in a particularly profound manner, aware both of the contradictory and dramatic aspects of that experience and of the centrality of the motif of the «beyond». On the basis of this interpretative thesis, the analyses of Hegel's text made in this research are devoted to focussing on the experiences of the subject's constitution and legitimization together with the unexpected consequences deriving from the problematic relationship that the consciousness establishes with the self-sufficient immobility of substance. The result is a historiographical and theoretical study that slots effectively into the contemporary debate on the great topicality of Hegel's thought.

Description: One of the core issues in Michel Foucault’s and Georges Canguilhem’s works is the study of the epistemological status and political functioning of biological discourse, explored in its fully heterogeneous, plural, and conflictual character. Starting from the relations and tensions between their theoretical orientations, the present work attempts a critical re-reading of their researchs, with the aim of integrating and mobilizing their analysis in light of contemporary political and epistemological debates. In this respect, Canguilhem’s biological philosophy allows us to re-examine the foucauldian conceptions of history, society, subjectivity, technology, and environment; moreover, it enables a re-questioning about the spaces of intervention of biopolitical technologies from a socio-ecological and eco-historical perspective.

Initially conceived as an apology for the Jewish community of Venice, it is actually replete with sceptical ideas. This volume will essentially aim at refreshing the approach to this work by highlighting and analysing its sceptical background and implications, especially as far as it involves the realm of politics and fashions a sceptical political appraisal of the Jewish people.

The papers here collected illustrate the obstacles that women encounter in their academic career, especially in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). The issues the volumes deals with are still worth taking into consideration considering that women represent only the 30% of the academic research staff at the world level and that only the 30% of women students choose STEM faculties.

Description: In the period following the Second World War Giulio Preti was one of the leading exponents of Italian philosophy. A master of open critical thought, cultivated in the light of a rationalism that dialogued with, and integrated into his own philosophical model, many of the currents and stances of the global research scenario. Phenomenology, Marxism, pragmatism, neopositivism, transcendentalism and structuralism: in Preti all of these found an organic and original synthesis. Further, his particular brand of rationalist-critical thought touched on many aspects of philosophical knowledge: theoretical philosophy, the philosophy of science, that of language and that of art, from ethics to politics and even taking in the history of philosophy, offering authoritative contributions in every sphere. One hundred years after his birth, the University of Florence and the heir to the Faculty in which he lectured at length, the Faculty of Education, has decided to honour his memory with this anthology of studies, penned by former pupils and others and also by younger scholars, to once again focus the wealth of this thought and its, in many respects, current relevance. Even now, this particular brand of open, critical rationalism can offer a benchmark for addressing the new issues for philosophical reflection thrown up by modern society and culture.

Description: This volume illustrates the different images of God in the books of the Old Testament. The single writings are considered synchronically in their final version. They speak in totally different ways about God and present a fascinating variety of theologies.
Description: Dieser Band stellt die Verschiedenheit der Gottesbilder des Altes Testamentes dar.

Description: After reviewing the development of "citizenship" under a historical and conceptual profile, as well as the many faces of this concept under a philosophical and analytical profile, the author discusses his belief that a generalized and extended idea of "citizenship” could be the core of a new philosophical and political paradigm, even more so, and better, than the inevitably abstract idea of "justice": exactly what contemporary societies need. Especially because, although we have become citizens in the public sphere of the state, we have remained subjects in the face of both public and private powers governing our lives in civil society, on all levels: local, national, European, global. To this end, the author advises reconsidering the subjective qualification we used to call "citizenship" as a bundle of functions: not only the elector-citizen in the stricto sensu political sphere, but also the producer-citizen, the reproducing and educating citizen, the consumer-citizen, the saver-citizen, the taxpayer-citizen, the user-citizen, the resident-citizen, and so on. Notwithstanding political democracy, for each of these functions it is possible, as well as necessary, to find new forms of representative democracy returning to the citizens the powers and the "voice" which they currently seem to be stripped of.

Description: “Logic”, as understood in this volume, is the set of knowledge at the basis of man’s reasoning faculties: understanding, analysing, arguing. The text presents a review of topics which are useful to strengthen the skills related to reasoning faculties through a brief introduction to the theoretical aspects and exercises intended to assess the understanding. The volume is divided into parts, which are organised in teaching units. The parts and units are presented in such a way that, following the thread in the order in which they are proposed, we move from one topic to the next, acquiring the prerequisites necessary for to what comes after. The text therefore lends itself to a “systematic” use, aimed at an extensive study. However, nothing prevents the reader from adapting the material to other needs, choosing only a few topics that they consider useful to integrate their knowledge, to do a “review” or to further practice on already known topics.

Description: How will work be configured in the future? What new entities and values will emerge following the transformations of the Fourth Industrial Revolution? How decisive will worker participation be for the success of organizations? This book offers concrete experiences of 'creative' participation of workers and managers in companies committed to developing an intelligent organization. The first part of the book offers the contribution of workers, employees or managers who may also have negotiating roles in union bargaining, but who are above all committed to making everything work, offering opportunities that are able to regenerate processes and enhance workers. The second part contains reflections and proposals on how participation experiences can urge the academic world, trade unions, politics and the legislative system to deepen and take into account the new needs of work, in order to build a virtuous circle that supports companies and workers, management and participation in the complex challenges posed by innovation and the competitive world of production.

Description: This volume deals with the 'hidden secrets of nature' in the natural magic of Giovan Battista Della Porta (1535-1615). The topic is analysed in relation to the internal debates of the Neapolitan Aristotelianism of the 16th century and to the proposals of the magic tradition of the Renaissance. This book also deals with the problem of witchcraft, a phenomenon which is not purely philosophical, but connected historically to Della Porta’s struggle against any form of superstitious explanation for natural secrets, including the roughest ones.

Description: What are the skills to be attributed to the good politician in a historical phase marked by the metamorphosis of politics? To ethically reset the complexity of politics understood as a profession, it is essential to start from an interdisciplinary analysis of its skills. In this book the history of political philosophy with economics and scientific research, pedagogy with teaching and finally psychology with sociology interact with each other to identify those essential practical skills even in non-routine situations. A study full of empirical data and historical references, a useful tool both for the political theory scholar and for the professional politician who intend to compete with demanding issues of very topical relevance.

Description: This volume, born from the collaboration of thirty-four scholars and trade union representatives, has a dual purpose. Firstly, to propose the analysis and theses on the human and political meaning of work contained in Bruno Trentin’s main book La città del lavoro (2nd ed., Firenze University Press, 2014), in the current phase of social transformations and theoretical uncertainties. Secondly, to promote a reflection testing the book’s fertility and topicality in order to deepen the processes at work at the start of the 21st century, in the belief that the pages written in 1997 by one of the greatest representatives of the history of the CGIL represent a 'classic' of the socio-political thought of the 20th century. The emerging result is surprising in many ways, and corresponds to the extraordinary richness of Trentin’s project, as well as to the political and trade-unionist ability of its author.

Description: The remains of the monastery of San Quirico stand on the slopes of Poggio Tondo, a hill not far from the ancient city of Populonia. They overlook the Tyrrhenian Sea, dotted with the islands of the Tuscan archipelago. Field research at this site, carried out in the first decade of the new millennium by two different teams, from Siena University and Venice’s Ca’ Foscari University, respectively, was part of ongoing efforts to expand the Baratti-Populonia Archeological Park, and to further explore the features present within it. This volume contains the results of this research work: a scientific publication of the excavation, and a critical analysis of the material found. Processing of the data collected during these investigations, together with a re-reading of written documentation, has made it possible to piece together the complex history of this important monastery, in a totally new narration. In this narration, the history of the monastery, and of the features which existed prior to it, are closely interwoven with the history of the promontory of Populonia and the surrounding area, ultimately producing a new overview which sets out the historical boundaries of this area, between Late Antiquity and the modern era.

Description: Bruno Trentin. Lavoro, libertà, conoscenza takes into consideration the figure of Bruno Trentin (1926-2007) and his work as a union leader and politician, his numerous writings in the framework of the history of Republican Italy and the transformations induced by the processes of globalisation. From this reflection, conducted from different disciplinary angles and with different political and cultural sensitivity, what emerges clearly is the extremely idiosyncratic significance of Bruno Trentin in both the practice and the theoretical analysis of the labour struggle and the exploration of its problems. A historic contribution featuring a wealth of suggestions, intuitions and reflections, capable of interpreting events and their potential union and political repercussions, within a project for the enhancement of liberty and the social and cultural role of work conducted in an extraordinarily innovative and far-sighted manner.

Description: The theme of “citizenship” has become very topical once again. Who should be considered a citizen? What does it mean to be a citizen? What are the mechanisms regulating inclusion and exclusion from citizenship? How can these mechanisms be justified and criticized? Using a multidisciplinary approach, the volume presents some studies on citizenship, moving across political science, case-law and social sciences. The aim of the volume is to reconstruct the debate, with references to empirical cases, and, on the basis of conceptual analysis, to enable a discussion on the main models of citizenship and on the different forms they have taken on in history. The suggested functional theory provides a tool to establish whether the attribution of the said status is justified or not.

Description: This book explores the link between gender and urban space, attempting to incorporate a joyful activism into geographical research and embracing forms of ""self-awareness and self-ignorance"" (Harding 1992) to reconsider established theoretical and methodological approaches and enact research practices informed by liberatory politics (Federici 2023). The author worked together with transfeminist activists in Cagliari and Brussels, socialised as white and cisgender women as her, to observe the urban space by considering the intersection between gender oppression and the privilege of whiteness and cisgenderness. The result is a deeply reflexive book, because the theory it contains is conceived out of the personal experiences and individual histories of the people involved and is marked by a constant questioning of the author's presence and limits; joyful, because it chooses the path of attention by focusing on the relationships between the people involved and embracing feminist practices of parody; political, because it offers both individual and collective representations that express how power relations work in urban space. Parody is the feminist practice for a joyful geography that the author and participants chose to critically imitate discrimination and create three collaborative short films, entitled: ""By Bike She Lives"", on the right to slowness from a feminist perspective; ""Urban Piss-Ups"", on the act of urinating in public space as a metaphor for the right to the city; and finally ""Freedom for Jeanneke-Pis"", on the symbolism associated with sexist public representations. While the individual cartographies contribute to a theoretical discourse on the city, the films are suitable for public debate, to be discussed, disseminated and used to exercise the right to critique, the right to ask questions and to imagine, think and share urban scenarios other than the existing ones.

Description: This volume collects the proceedings of the seminar organized by the Unique Guarantee Committee for Equal Opportunities of the University of Florence, which focuses on a collective discussion regarding work, study and research conditions in contemporary universities. Drawing inspiration from the reflections of two Canadian teachers, M. Berg and B.K. Seeber, on the feelings of frustration and inadequacy due to the rhythms and objectives sometimes imposed in the university context, this volume focuses on the experiences and moods of all the people involved in the academic community with regard to the obstacles linked to lack of time and economic resources and to increasing workloads. It also offers a reflection on how to create relationships and networks, inaugurate sharing experiments on research and teaching experiences, as well as good practices to contrast those individual and collective drifts which may result in organizational discomfort, thus severely damaging the pursuit for the core values of public universities.

Description: At least until the beginning of the 1990s, when the paradigm of recognition seemed to supplant the paradigm of redistributive justice theories, all the biggest contemporary political theories attempted to single out injustice in some form of inequality and tried in various ways to make individuals equal within a particular space for interpersonal comparison: whether this be the space of fundamental freedoms, income, wealth, conditions for self-respect, well-being, chances of well-being or capabilities. The objective of this work is to rebuild the main notions of equality and justice which have emerged from the contemporary philosophical-political debate and, at the same time, account for the critical theories that they have inspired, from the theories in which the language of difference adds to or surpasses the language of equality, to the paradigms located radically beyond all those regulatory positions which more or less explicitly arise from the liberal tradition, such as the paradigm of biopolitics, and that of cognitive capitalism.

Description: Chiara Mastroberti retraces the most decisive moments of Judith Butler's work with the aim of deepening Butler’s thoughts on the relationship between political subjection and individual passions. Rereading La vita psichica del potere and Parole che provocano (1997), passing through Vite precarie (2004) and Critica della violenza etica (2005), the author analyses Butler’s discussion on fear, paranoia, melancholy and desire, framing it within the philosopher’s broader ethical and political reflection. At the core of this reflection, there are the dialectics of "psychic life", oscillating between adherence and resistance to the social norm: passions are the key to reading this text in order to understand the origin and limit of the contemporary subject, its "passivity” and the secret of its survival.

Description: This book proposes a critical examination of the main approaches of contemporary historiography, with the aim of bringing out their latent conceptual structures. Reinhart Koselleck wrote that «Historical knowledge always focuses on something more than what is found in the sources»: it is all about making its theories and values explicit, as they are also particular and historical facts themselves, which have clumsily been raised to universal principles. The author brings to light the pre-eminent forms of our relationship with the past through an analysis going from historiography to philosophy - from Pierre Nora, Carlo Ginzburg, Lynn Hunt to Hayden White, Jacques Derrida, Frank Ankersmit; from the New Cultural History and the histoire de la mémoire to the narrativism and to the philosophies of the historical sublime. Going beyond speculation, it is perhaps possible to aspire to a new alliance between historical and philosophical thought, to delimit a “middle space” between the unstructured praxism of a historiography without philosophy to the excessive idealism of a philosophy without history.

Description: Cognition implies perception and judgement. Perception consists in interpreting a sensory stimulus: it is a common process in every animal with a brain, and can be described as a Bayesian inference where the interpretive algorithm is stored in long-term memory. Judgement, on the other hand, is related to the comparison between two perceptions which are coded in a language, in that short-term memory presents the first perception once again and compares it with the second. This operation is called inverted Bayes’ theorem and while it does not presuppose an algorithm, it builds a new one using comparison. The book shows how the algorithmic leaps related to linguistic operations capture aspects of reality which cannot be reached through Bayesian chains of inference following the same algorithm. Nowadays, we experience the successes of Artificial Intelligence (AI), which, however, works thanks to a direct Bayes’ theorem and speeds up recursive chains, but does not resort to algorithmic leaps; therefore, it does not contribute to human language.

Description: The research in this volume is based on the link between the Fourth Industrial Revolution and work. On this level, there are several questions. What is the nature of work 4.0? What is the relationship between the technological revolution and employment? What are the labour rights in the era of new business models? Can innovation be implemented without overcoming the twentieth-century subordination and the new forms of freedom and work responsibility? Do digitalisation and new forms of business organization change working relationships and favour new forms of collaboration and conflict? Are training, quality and freedom at work more important than wages? How do company planning and design relate to technology and work? Does digitalisation push knowledge-based economy to determine new forms of work? What projects need to be implemented by the involved parties (starting with the workers) for these transformations to be a step forward in working conditions and industrial relations? These and many other questions are the basis of the essays collected in this volume, born from the collaboration between authors of different backgrounds and experience: academics, journalists, entrepreneurs, managers, operators, trade unionists and trade union representatives.

It represents the first stage in a larger editorial project that aspires to contribute study and research to build towards a common European law on bioethics. The authors who have collaborated on this book are among the leading experts, in their respective fields, on questions raised by technologies of reproduction, which are here elaborated at both medical-scientific level and in their relation to sociology, bioethics, law and politics. The various contributions are divided into three specific thematic areas: liberty of reproduction and rights of the individual, pre-implant genetic diagnosis and the freedom and limitations of scientific research.

Description: This volume offers an insight into the relationship between Ernst Cassirer and modern philosophy through the comparison with three emblematic figures of the philosophical horizon of the seventeenth-century: Descartes, Spinoza and Leibniz. This Cassirerian itinerary in the “spirit of the modern” is traced through the collection of three texts of Cassirer's production, two of which are translated into Italian for the first time. In these writings the author deals with the philosophical impact of Descartes' teaching on Queen Christina of Sweden, with the analysis of Spinoza's notion of nature and with Leibniz's Discourse on Metaphysics. The three texts represent some of the most brilliant and insightful research that would lead the author to the development of the philosophy of culture.

Description: The starting point is the conviction that publicity is central to Kantian political thought as part of the wider relationship between politics and morality. In this sense the book aims to outline subjective and objective limits of the public control of power, which must be structurally guaranteed from a juridical point of view and that citizens/subjects have to put into practice. But from a Kantian point of view publicity is also linked to education and to the public use of reason, that individuals must have the courage to realize. The individual dimension and the collective/institutional one are tightly linked to answer the question: according to Kant, is it possible an education to publicity?

Description: This work asks questions on the relationship between innovative collective actors, such as the 'new social movements' and the political institutions of representative democracy starting from an underlying hypothesis: the idea that civil society is the main source of political legitimation of liberal democracy. More precisely, what this monograph reflects on is the capacity of the social movements to concretely test alternative forms of democracy. The aim of the contemporary movements is to augment the fundamental values of the "democratic revolution", namely the principles of freedom and equality. They constantly lead to conflict and social antagonism: indeed new conflicts and new antagonisms arise every time that the movements implement radical experiences of democracy in the multiple and different spheres of social life. Only by accepting and setting value by these alternative democratic practices and experiences – and this is the author of this work's thesis – may democratic ideals be revived in contemporary society.

This reconstruction of his work places him in broader contemporary debates on various subjects, from reliabilism to Darwinism in contraposition to creationism. The image of Plantinga that emerges is the very striking one of a thinker who, despite the intention to elaborate an epistemological theory that was declaredly confessional, has produced contributions that are of considerable interest for epistemology as a whole.

Description: Centred around the topic of dialogue, the philosophical position which Guido Calogero (1904-1986) came to hold at the beginning of the 1950s, and developed in his subsequent studies, establishes a complex relationship with the philosophical research from the years before, interested in the historical origins of the logical and gnoseological problems in ancient thought and their necessary dissolution in contemporary idealism. This work highlights how these bonds condition the formulation of the dialogic principle, despite the philosopher's intention to assert its speculative autonomy; but it also shows, at the same time, how this renewed ethical criterion enriches Calogero's position, opening it to developments that contemporary reflection can acquire and investigate further.

Description: What is left of socialism ? This question, too, must be answered in a "project left." Certainly, socialism is no longer an accomplished or well-known model of society to tend tothrough daily political action. It can only be conceived as an uninterrupted search for the liberation of the person and his capacity for self-realization. It should be possible introducing elements of socialism into concrete society such as: equal opportunities, community welfare, control over the organization of work, the diffusion of knowledge as an instrument of freedom. This would overcome, from time to time, the contradictions and failures of capitalism and the market economy, making the person, and not only the classes, the keystone of civil coexistence. Description: The book investigates the reflection of Arthur Schopenhauer on education, calling to mind some of the great figures who have underlined his value as educator: Nietzsche of the Third Untimely Meditation, Hadot and Foucault of the Art of Living and Care of the Self; or, from the opposite perspective, the roles that were projected onto the philosopher as a teacher: aesthetic educator who was master of artistic contemplation for numerous generations of artists and writers between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, master of wisdom, revealer of Eastern cultures, eudaemonological model of practical philosophy. The research also examines the recent renewed interest in «formation» (Bildung) in order to repropose the problem of how to return from the viewpoint of Schopenhauer's «anthropological results» to the very conceptual core – the relationship between the educational field and philosophical universe of Schopenhauer in connection with his notion of the human subject.

Description: At the end of the eighteenth century, before and during the French Revolution, Kant wrote intensively about politics. This book brings together the translations of his principal philosophical-political works, with the editor's annotations, from the essay on Enlightenment through to the writing on progress. The texts are subject to a Creative Commons licence, so that they can be amended without restrictions, retaining the same rights. Open access publication alone can achieve freedom in the public use of reason. The decision to free a classic work from economic monopoly and censure is intended to demonstrate that open access is not an academic theory but a reality that can give value and meaning to the establishment of a public university. Making Kant read means much more than merely reading him.

Description: Using unpublished documents, this volume restores the meeting between two masters in a historical and ideal way: Norberto Bobbio and Silvio Trentin. Through the writings which Bobbio dedicated to Trentin between 1954 and 1991, the readers are introduced to Trentin’s world. They gradually discover Trentin’s exemplary biography, his clear moral personality and his commitment to anti-fascism and the Resistance, as well as the great themes of his work as a jurist and political thinker: the criticism of fascism, federalism and the idea of the 'third way'. As Bobbio observes, the fundamental reason why Trentin represents a still valuable example is that, through his life and thought, he has perfectly embodied the conception of politics as a desire of justice, as opposed to the will to dominate.

Description: That error could be of interest to Freemasons and Illuminati as a topic becomes evident when one sees it in the context of concepts such as prejudice, ignorance, and gullibility. The perfection of the human being was understood as the detachment from prejudices – from errors –, as overcoming ignorance and as a fight against gullibility. In 1785 there was a discussion among the Illuminati of Gotha about how one should understand error. Prince August of Saxe-Gotha transfers Voltaire’s two types of imagination to two types of errors, using the distinction made by the physicist Charles Du Fay, who distinguished resin electricity (électricité résineuse) with its negative charge from glass electricity (électricité vitreuse) with its positive charge. So August suggests that there are positive and negative errors: the positive errors are attractive, they attract. In this case the cause of error lies on our side, on the side of the subjects: because of certain defects in the knower, facts are not correctly recognized. The negative errors, on the other hand, repel: there it is due to the nature of the representations of the facts themselves, which have pitfalls or are distorted by hallucinations, that we go wrong.

Description: Sexual harassment is a complex behaviour, characterized by several dimensions and definitions, as shown by the literature. In an online context, it is important to fully understand its nature, characteristics and consequences as well as how it may affect adolescents. This work aims to systematize the information available in the literature, by describing the main characteristics of the phenomenon, and trying to provide a definition. The research, which was conducted on four databases in November 2021, led to the identification of 20958 works. After removing the duplicates, and analyzing the abstracts and full-texts, a final number of 65 works were included, which were read in full-text and analysed. As for the studies collected, the type of relationship between the aggressor and the victim is described, alongside a description of the behaviors classified as online sexual harassment. Online sexual harassment can manifest itself in three main typologies (verbal, visual, cybersexual). Within these typologies, it is possible to identify three prevalent behaviours: unwanted solicitation, non-consensual sexting, and sharing of intimate and/or private content with third parties without the victim’s consent.

Description: In modern societies two processes seem to be carried on simultaneously. On one side, the traditional shape assumed by historical knowledge seems dissolving. On the other side, another exigence has to be affirmed: the necessity to remember, to share their memories. This is a pattern linked to the limits and contradictions which characterised the relationship between present and past. Tracing the steps thanks to which the anti-fascist Resiatance have been taking place in Italy is useful for defining the strong ethic and politic relevance making it a precious tool for democratic convivence.

Description: One of the initiatives on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of Dante’s death, carried out in Bulgaria in October 2021, consisted in the publication of a monographic issue of the weekly Literaturen vestnik in a bilingual version with the title “Ancora attuale, sempre divino: Literaturen vestnik celebra Dante.” Among the thematic features contained in this issue, an important place is occupied by three surveys conducted among Bulgarian secondary school teachers, university lecturers and poets. The surveys aim to outline how Dante’s work is currently perceived and to comment on the fact that – unbeknownst to most people – the Divina Commedia has been excluded from the literature curricula since the 2018-19 academic year.

Description: The essay discusses creativity as a guiding idea to be entrusted with the task of building a new organizational culture, through which the person can witness at once the recognition and appreciation of his or her powers and the renewal of the context whose development and success are increasingly inseparable from the practice of divergent intelligence of individuals and groups. Above all, the creative person is able to give quality to work and working life, survival and competitive strength, particularly, by virtue of his or her ability to respond with an attitude of confrontation towards complexity, approach problems originally, appropriately and realistically, strive not only to solve them but also to find new ones, to cultivate initiative and autonomy, to strive to go beyond the current, the "not-yet-being," the already given, the already accomplished, the already acquired, to be willing to tread unfamiliar and tested, even unknown routes and thus produce new and useful (creative, precisely) professional knowledge that is increasingly indispensable today to make the organization more competitive.

Description: The volume contains a collection of contributions presented at the conference “INVALSI data: a tool for research”, held in Rome the 20th September 2016. On this occasion, scholars from different professional contexts (school, university, research) and selected through a call for papers presented their scientific works, using INVALSI data. The book is divided into two parts: the first part devoted to the use of INVALSI data in didactic research, the second focused on INVALSI data as a tool for supporting policy and decision makers. The eighteen chapters cover in-depth analyses that, starting from different angles and using several methodologies, offer the reader a rich and structured view of the different possible uses of the data that INVALSI gather each year.

Description: This book represents the first monograph on the philosopher, economist and sociologist Emil Lederer (1882-1939). Director of the Archiv für Sozialwissenschaft und Sozialpolitik from 1922 to 1933, he was then forced to move to the United States to avoid persecution as a Jew (despite his conversion to Catholicism in 1908) and a socialist. There he became the Dean of the so-called ‘University in Exile’ at the New School for Social Research in New York. After sketching an updated picture of his intellectual biography and of the reception of his major works, the volume focuses on the issue of political order, and notably on the relationship between State and society. Before the outbreak of the First World War, Lederer was confident of being able to find a composition between State and the plurality of society, relying on the mediation skills of the middle classes. The First World War put in evidence certain contradictions of the modern liberal state that were intrinsic in its very origins; the State proves to be able to lose its connection with the structural plurality of society, becoming an abstract organisation, in Lederer’s words rising definitively to the status of an ‘abstract sovereignty’. This paves the way for the possibility of conceiving a political order no longer based on the connection between society and State, as in the liberal and constitutional tradition, but on a direct relationship between the leader and the masses. Such a relationship relies on the former’s continuous ability to activate the emotions of the masses, and has no need for the internal reasoning typical of the dialectic between society and political institutions. According to Lederer, this will be the hallmark of the totalitarian State, analysed in his last, unfinished book, State of the masses (1939).

Description: Maximus the Greek (c. 1470-1555/1556), one of the most influential members of the Greek diaspora in Russia, arrived in Moscow from Constantinople with an official delegation (1518) and remained there until his death at the time of Ivan the Terrible. It was only in the second half of the last century that it was discovered Maximus the Greek must be identified with Michael Trivolis, a young Greek humanist educated in Florence at the end of the 15th century. Like many of his contemporaries, Trivolis had been influenced by the preaching of Girolamo Savonarola. Systematic research on the relation between the work of Savonarola and the humanists close to him and the writings of Maximus the Greek has not yet been conducted, but the data collected to date allow us to establish a close relationship within the context of certain religious, philosophical, and social themes. The examination of a text dedicated to the exercise of power by emperors and princes, the Discourse more extended, written by Maximus the Greek by the time of Ivan the Terrible, shows not only direct correlations with some of Savonarola’s cantos, but also the presence of images and themes from Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy and Cristoforo Landino’s Comento, starting with the idea of empire. The collections of Maximus the Greek’s writings, in which this Discourse appears, were widely disseminated, and left a deep mark on Russian culture.

Description: The dramatic health emergency that has hit Europe has put the issue of a thorough reform of the European budget financing system back on the political discussion table, in order to support the expenditure required to cope with the new tasks that are increasingly expected to be assigned to the Union. The ensuing debate concerns both the nature of the new resources and the new tasks that are to be assigned to the European budget. And it also concerns how the distribution of resources between the different levels of government is to be defined. European taxation has so far been based, without any particular discussion, on the principle that taxation power remains a competence of the Member States. However, the impetus induced by climate change and the need to find resources to combat it is changing the situation. The idea of introducing a carbon tax at European level could be the embryo of a fiscal autonomy of the Union.

From the reflections presented and through the examples given (Galilei, Darwin, Piaget) it emerges that, starting with the "scientific revolution," the renewal of science has also taken place with the contribution of scientific writing, which has become progressively more linear, more open, more disseminated, more dialectical, and more informative.

Description: Starting from the reconstruction of Bruno Trentin's transnational network of political and intellectual relationships, the essay analyzes the European and international dimensions of his political and trade union activity from the years of his leadership of the General Secretary up to his experience in the European Parliament. The union of rights and the political program on Europe are the main themes of the essay. They are combined with the question of the construction of political Europe and the institutional reform of the Union, and culminate in his contribution to the European Parliament, in the aftermath of the elaboration of the "European Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union," and on the occasion of the debate on the European Constitution.

Description: This essay focuses on light and theories of combustion in the late 18th century. But it does so “on the nitrogen side”: that is, on the side of those inert three-quarters of air that do not contribute to respiration and, therefore, do not trigger the light-emitting response of phosphorus in experiments. In analyzing the variety of opinions broadly (and imprecisely) ascribable to the “Lavoisierian-Phlogistonist” dispute, this book sheds special light on the non-Lavoisierian German context where Johann Friedrich August Göttling performed his tests on phosphorus and nitrogen – and, subsequently, on Lazzaro Spallanzani’s crucial role in the debate. The book pays attention to theories, but it also deals with experimental practice. Therefore, it tells a story of procedures and instruments: in fact, it was especially on this tricky field that the understanding of the phosphorus-nitrogen relationship was achieved. In reading these pages, we shall meet the great heroes of early chemistry as well as the “artisans of innovation” who gave substantial contributions to the advancement of their discipline: a rich fresco that gives us a clear idea of the complexity of the methodological debate at the turn of the century, and of how widespread scientific activity was at that time.

Description: In the complex panorama of Russian translations of Dante, Ol’ga Sedakova occupies a particularly important place, representing the figure of an intellectual who not only devoted long studies to Dante’s poetics and language as well as attempted translation, but who also introjected the themes and scope of his cultural heritage into her own work. In this essay, Sedakova’s poetic and translating career is analysed by showing how, from her first publications in the samizdat journals of the 1970s to her most recent publications in 2020, the figure of Dante, his work and themes have always been given central importance.

Description: The volume, dedicated to the 44th International Conference of the Italian Union for Drawing, investigates the theme of ‘Transitions’, which particularly effectively represents our time and the current condition of the discipline of Drawing. The term, beyond its generic meaning of an intermediate stage in a process in which a condition changes from one state to another, has always been used in various fields, from music to geophysics. In fact, the disciplines of drawing have always been confronted with themes and issues relating to transitions from one condition to another. The history of representation tells us of transformations, even epochal ones, relating to ‘drawing’, with all that such transitions entail: suffice it to think of the evolution of forms of representation, of instrumental apparatuses, of the mutability of supports, of the analogical-digital transition underway, of the new modes of communication on platforms, of the hypertrophic offer of images also on the net that confirms Guy Debord’s intuitions relating to the new spectacularisation of society. Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events. The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.

Description: The essay highlights the vast inherent power of education and research on education in and for adulthood - making use of the presentation and discussion of a Case Study -. This Case Study deals with the educational needs that is for the quality of the services of an elderly home in a City in northern Italy. The Case Study was conducted consistently with the theoretical-methodological framework of Grounded Theory and Participatory Research-Action. It allows us to capture "in nuce" some of the processes of generative and human change that can be shaped by clarifying the need/willingness to make improvements at the level of In-Service Training, School Training, and the elderly home organization. In sum, it emerges an awareness of the transformative value intrinsic in the "caring" professions. Lastly, the limitations of the research - conducted in COVID-19 time - and also the multiplicity of factors that triggered this beginning of change are considered, as well as the difficult implications of this work, given the dramatic challenges of the current socio-historical and geopolitical context.

Description: During Cesare Borgia’s expedition in Romagna, Leonardo da Vinci designed many public works for Cesena but it is still unclear if he worked in other cities of the region. In particular, a possible passage through Faenza should be investigated. Some scholars think that a drawing of Leonardo’s notebook L (Paris, Institut de France) could be a representation of Faenza cathedral, but this attribution is disputed. Moreover, in Faenza’s countryside there are some original castles with hexagonal, rhomboid or ogival plan. It is not clear if Leonardo knew these buildings, perhaps even before the Borgian military campaign.

Description: Umberto Gori has often focused on the subject of peace, seen as the primary objective of Political Science, analysing the challenges that peacebuilding processes have to face in an international context undergoing profound change, and with aspects that could be described as dystopic. We will explore these dynamics by drawing inspiration from the way in which Ivan Illich dealt with the theme of the forced medicalisation of society, a theme that presents many points of contact with the intention of imposing a distorted version of the concept of peace, where a model of peaceful coexistence is proposed, which does not arise from the development of stable harmonious relations between mutually free and independent subjects, but from an absence of conflict produced by dehumanising forms of social conditioning.

Description: What is the role of interpretation—the close reading of individual texts—in cognitive literary studies? In attempting to come to grips with this vexed question, my article focuses on the complex divides that separate the practice of interpretation from cognitive-scientific research. I argue that cognitive literary studies can only fulfill their potential by moving beyond interpretation, and I survey lines of research that have already put into practice this intuition. Secondly, I explore a heuristic use of interpretation, where insights from cognitive science are leveraged—in what I call a “cognitive thematics”—to illuminate a background of metacognitive questions.

Description: The paper attempts to make an initial discussion on the usefulness of the history of education for interpreting the synergies between school, didactics and territory as they evolve over time. The paper offers a quick analysis of the pedagogical debate and political-organisational changes and then moves on to more practical and didactic issues. The paper also indicates some of the potentials of the approach offered by the history of education as applied history to revitalise the relationship with the local context.

Description: The vision related to the territorial project of the navigable canal, which was supposed to connect the cities of Florence, Prato and Pistoia and, passing through the Nievole Valley, reach the Arno and then the sea, stems from the study of some drawings by Leonardo da Vinci, dating from around 1503-1504. The article retraces the reading of the various signs found, in which there appears to be a mixture between the dimension of cartographic survey and the project idea, in a dialectic between territorial potential and criticalities, according to the multidisciplinary approach to territorial science that was explored by Leonardo.

Description: Eleonora Ramirez de Montalvo is one of the most important historical figures of woman’s assistance and education during the seventeenth century. She is the founder of two lay congregations: the Minime Ancille of the Divine Incarnation (1647) and the Minime Ancille of the Holy Trinity (1650). This volume lists and describes in an analytical way the papers produced and preserved by the second of these, also known Montalve alla Quiete, which for over two centuries carried out an intense activity and exerted a considerable influence in Tuscany. The study of this archive provides a unique range of information both on the economic and political events, and on the relationships maintained by the Montalve with society growing its prestige and heritage. It also offers the opportunity to undertake countless historical research on facts that concern Florentine territory and the rest of Tuscany.
