Description: We investigated the Cerro Tuzgle cushion peatland (24˚09' S, 66˚24' W) located on the Argentine Altiplano at 24°S, north of the present-day South American subtropical dry zone. The core Tuz-694 was retrieved by percussion coring in December 2012 and analyses were performed during the years 2014 to 2021. We applied radiocarbon dating, XRF core-scanning, organic carbon and total nitrogen element content determination, stable organic carbon and total nitrogen isotope analyses, and cellulose stable carbon and oxygen isotope analyses. We extend the Cerro Tuzgle cushion peatland record to the middle Holocene covering the last 7200 cal yr BP. The aim of the study was to gain further knowledge of the Holocene development of the SASM and potential modulations of its latitudinal position.

Description: Oxygen isotopes in biogenic silica (δ18O BSi) from lake sediments allow for quantitative reconstruction of past hydroclimate and proxy–model comparison in terrestrial environments. The signals of individual records have been attributed to different factors, such as air temperature (T air ), atmospheric circulation patterns, hydrological changes and lake evaporation. Here, we provide 55 composite down–core records published to date and complemented with additional lake basin parameters (e.g. lake water residence time and catchment size) to best characterize the signal properties. Records feature widely different temporal coverage and resolution ranging from decadal–scale records covering the last 150 years to records with multi–millennial scale resolution spanning glacial–interglacial cycles. Best coverage in number of records (N=37) and datapoints (N=2112) is available for northern hemispheric (NH) extra–tropic regions throughout the Holocene (corresponding to Marine Isotope Stage 1; MIS 1).

Description: Alkenone concentration data, Uk'37 ratios, Uk'37 temperature estimates, TEX86 ratios, and TEX86 temperature estimates were generated from ODP Site 846 (3307 m water depth) in the Eastern Equatorial Pacific for the interval from 5.1 Ma to 6 Ma at ~ 2.5 kyr resolution. Sediment samples were extracted using accelerated solvent extraction (ASE). Alkenone concentrations and ratios were measured using GC-FID. Isoprenoid glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs) were measured using HPLC-MSD. Uk'37 temperature estimates are reported on both the Müller et al. (1998) and BAYSPLINE (Tierney & Tingley, 2018) calibrations. TEX86 temperature estimates are reported using the Kim et al. (2008), Kim et al. (2010), and BAYSPAR (Tierney and Tingley, 2014) calibrations. These data enable a comparison of temperature estimates from the Uk'37 and TEX86 paleothermometers.

Description: The UK'37 sea surface temperature (SST) proxy, based on the distribution of long-chain akenones, was measured via mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) at 100-µm resolution in a 60-cm section of the well-dated core MD03-2621 from the Cariaco Basin (10.6782, -64.9715). This section spans an age of ~ 11.9 to 11.2 kyr b2k and thus includes the Younger Dryas-Holocene transition. The resulting record provides insights into interannual variability during this most recent glacial to interglacial transition. In order to translate UK'37 values into SST, a correction factor to account for differences between MSI-based data and conventional UK'37 data was applied. SST was calculated with the BAYSPLINE model.

Description: Mesozooplankton (mesoZP) per capita mass, elemental composition and stable N isotopes during the mesocosm experiment in the Canary Islands in autumn 2018. Depth-integrated (0-14 m) plankton nets were taken over the course of 38 days. Metazoan zooplankton were split into three size fractions (55-200, 200-500 and 〉500 µm), picked into tin cups in groups and C, N and δ15N measured in an element analyser coupled to a mass spectrometer. Particulate organic matter (〉0.7µm) was also measured for a comparison of C/N between the bottom of the food web and mesoZP grazers. The upwelling treatment started on day 4. Description: Vertical profiles of in-situ temperature and practical salinity were obtained by a free-falling prope (MSS90 by Sea & Sun Technology), launched through holes in sea ice. Measured variables were conductivity, temperature and pressure (CTD). Practical salinity and depth were derived using TEOS10. The probe was linked to a surface field laptop by a loose, conducting tether and and an electric winch with a slip ring for data transmission. Geographic position and time was recorded simultaneous to deployments by a GPS interfaced with the laptop. The positions for PS138_152_MSS_1 and PS138_152_MSS_2 only were set to one value each day, based on one position of Polarstern, as the field GPS did not work correctly. The data are preliminary, with an accuracy of 0.05 in practical salinity. They only cover the upper 15 m of each profile and are averaged in time during each ice station for the duration of deployment of other sensors measuring in the boundary layer directly under the sea ice. The final data set and the accompanying turbulence data will be published in the future. Further details can be found in the PS138 expedition report that is currently in production.

Description: In Gobabeb, Namibia SWD, LWD and DIR are each measured redundant with two instruments of the same make (not in this data base). The differences between the pairs are used in the quality control. This is done manually by inspecting plots of half-day diurnal courses of the pairs and their differences. Values are removed mostly in the morning due to daily cleaning. Other reasons for larger differences are birds, insects, or people at the station. There are regular fog events varying in frequency over the year. Usually, the fog appears in the second half of the night and disappears a few hours after sunrise. The case temperatures of pyrgeometers practically never drop below dewpoint but there can be water deposition of the dome.

Description: This study simulated a 9-months warming scenario on the common seagrass Zostera marina from winter into summer (December 2015 - August 2016) in the Western Baltic Sea (Kiel Fijord), using outdoor mesocosms. Two treatments were applied: Ambient temperature regime (Ambient) and Ambient + 3.6C (Heat) over the entire course of the experiment. Temperature regimes were compared to the 22-year temperature average in the area. This dataset shows concentrations of NO2+NO3, NH4, PO4 of each treatment (Ambient, Heat) as the mean and confidence interval (CI) across all benthocosms per treatment (n=6).

Two treatments were applied: Ambient temperature regime (Ambient) and Ambient + 3.6C (Heat) over the entire course of the experiment. Temperature regimes were compared to the 22-year temperature average in the area. This dataset shows final above and below ground biomass per shoot for each shoot measured. The organization of the data is hierarchical: Treatment (Heat, Ambient), Benthocosms number (6 benthocosms per treatment), Seagrass box number (4 boxes per benthocosm), shoot number (originally 6 shoots per box, some were lost throughout the experiment). Unit of biomass is g dry weight per shoot.

The differences between the pairs are used in the quality control. This is done manually by inspecting plots of half-day diurnal courses of the pairs and their differences. Values are removed mostly in the morning due to daily cleaning. Other reasons for larger differences are birds, insects, or people at the station. Description: Arctic warming increases the degradation of permafrost soils but little is known about floodplain soils and other permafrost soils in the permafrost region. This dataset present soil properties from twelve analyzed cores located in the northeastern Siberian Lena River Delta within the continuous permafrost zone in northern Yakutia, Russia that were sampled in 2018. The cores represent intact yedoma, yedoma thaw slumps, and floodplain profiles. The soil coring and sampling was carried out in August 2018 for a total of 30 soil cores, 35 soil profiles, and 341 sediment samples. First, vegetation and other characteristics of the plots were described. Then, the active layer soils were excavated, described, and sampled with a fixed volume cylinder (250 cm³). Then the permafrost layers were sampled with a modified, snow, ice, and permafrost (SIPRE) auger to a depth of 1 m (core diameter of 7.62 cm) and visually described in their characteristics. Each core was divided into subsamples with 5-10 cm length according to its facies horizons, transported frozen to Alfred Wegener Institute in Potsdam, and stored at -20 °C until analysis. A subset of these sediment samples (n=105 from 12 cores) were later analyzed in the laboratory for physical and chemical properties; this data is presented here. The analysis from these samples includes: water content, dry bulk density, gravimetric ice content, pH, conductivity, total organic carbon content, total inorganic carbon content, total carbon content, total nitrogen content, carbon density, TOC storage, and TN storage. Selected samples were further analyzed for radiocarbon and grain size analysis.

Description: This dataset includes counts, percentages and concentrations of all dinoflagellate cyst taxa identified in the benthic nephloid layer (BNL), cyst rain and surface sediments collected along a land-sea transect off Figueira da Foz (NW Portugal, Atlantic Iberian margin) during the Hydrographic Institute (IH)-HABWAVE cruise (16th-19th September 2019). Sampling of the dinoflagellate cyst community in the BNL, the water column (sediment trap) and the surface sediments (together with studies of spatio-temporal changes in physical properties) were carried out in order to investigate the dinoflagellate cyst distribution and the factors (physical and biological) affecting it. Water samples for cyst analyses were collected by a rosette firing system associated with the CTD, and the cyst rain using a sediment trap situated above the BNL. They were filtered (40-47 l) on board through a 150µm-nylon mesh sieve onto a 10µm-calibrated stainless steel sieve (Retsch). In the laboratory, cysts were concentrated by centrifugation. Full and empty cysts were counted to investigate whether a reservoir of viable cysts existed in the BNL. Surface sediments were sampled with a Smith McIntyre grab and using Plexiglass tubes (3.6 cm internal diameter) that were inserted in the sediment to recover the top 1-cm layer. Cysts from sediments were concentrated by density separation with sodium polytungstate (2.016 g/ml).

Description: The presence-absence data for macrobenthic fauna that has been collected in Mingulay Reef Complex (Scotland, UK) across 79 stations over the years 2003, 2005, 2009, 2010 and 2011. The collection of the benthic samples has been carried out using a Van-Veen grab, mainly from hard habitats (e.g. live and dead coral framework). About 60% of the macrofaunal specimens have been identified at species level using high quality taxonomic keys and advice from taxonomy experts. Most common taxonomic groups analysed here are molluscs, polychaetes, arthropods, bryozoans, anthozoans, tunicates and brachiopods. The collection of the specimens is now deposited at the National Museums of Scotland (see the attached excel file for details). The enviromental data contains information about coordinates and environmental settings at stations where macrobenthic samples mentioned above, were collected. The environmental settings that are included in the file refer to the years 2003, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2011. For more information on the environmental variables have a look in Henry et al. 2010 (doi:10.1007/s00338-009-0577-6) and Henry et al. 2013 (doi:10.5194/bg-10-2737-2013). The environmental variables included in the excel file are: type of macrohabitat (i.e. muddy sand, rubble, rock, live coral, dead framework, live & dead framework), depth (m), slope, ruggedness, broad-scale bathymetric position index, fine-scale bathymetric position index, average current speed (m/s), maximum current speed (m/s), northness, eastness, winter North Atlantic Oscillation Index (same year), winter North Atlantic Oscillation Index (previous year), annual average bottom temperature (same year), annual average bottom salinity (same year). Extraction of bathymetric (depth) and topographic data [slope, aspect, northness, eastness, ruggedness, standardised broad-scale bathymetric position index (BPI; with an inner radius of 1 cell and an outer radius of 5 cells), fine-scale BPI (with an inner radius of 1 cell and an outer radius of 3 cells)] was based on multibeam echosounder data, using the Spatial Analyst and Benthic Terrain Modeler toolboxes in ArcGIS v.10.6.1 Average and maximum current speed values (m/s) were extracted by the ArcGIS v. 10.6.1 Spatial Analyst toolbox using data generated by a high-resolution 3D ocean model created for the MRC by Moreno-Navas et al. (2014). Data for the winter NAOI (DJFM) (Hurrell et al., 2003) were downloaded from the National Center for Atmospheric Research/University Corporation for Atmospheric Research website (climatedataguide.ucar.edu; data accessed on 28/02/2019).

Description: Information on frequency, magnitude and seasonality of damage-inducing torrential flooding events from steep, alpine headwater catchments (torrents) in Austria, for the period from 1962 to 2017. The datasets are based on information from the Austrian torrential event catalogue. The frequency data set is complemented with information on the number of functional torrential structures (technical mitigation measures), the number of exposed buildings as well as a multitude of climate indices related to precipitation, snow melt and the sum of precipitation plus snowmelt. Annual aggregates are derived by using area-weighted means across all catchments.

Description: This dataset combines model outputs from five experiments which aim at reconstructing the middle Eocene to early Oligocene greenhouse-icehouse transition (Toumoulin et al., 2021, Clim. Past). Simulations are characterized by a 40 Ma paleogeography (Poblete et al., 2021, Earth-Sci. Rev.), different pCO2 (1120, 840, 560 ppm), and an antarctic ice-sheet or not. When present, antarctic ice-sheet is represented alone or associated with a sea-level decrease of -70 m, which is applied homogeneously to the 40 Ma paleogeography map. All experiments were performed with the general circulation model IPSL-CM5A2 (Sepulchre et al., 2020, Geosci. Model Dev.) and ran for 4000 years to a quasi-equilibrium state (change in deep ocean temperature 〈 0.1°C/century). Data are monthly averages over the last 100 years.

Description: The Guaymas Basin hydrothermal vents in the Gulf of California have been visited during RV Atlantis mission AT37-06 in December 2016. Aim of this mission was to understand element fluxes and microbially driven reactions at the diffusive vent sites. The submarine ALVIN and push cores were used to sample undisturbed sediments at specific locations covering different temperature and geochemical regimes. From these cores porewater was sampled using Rhizons. Here we present concentrations of select anions in the porewater. We measured the concentrations of sulfate, sulfide, chloride, ammonia, phosphate and silicate.

Description: This dataset contains measured dissolved trace element concentrations (Fe, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb) of station depth profiles sampled in Fram Strait (North Greenland Sea) during GEOTRACES expedition GN05 (PS100) between 21 July and 1 September 2016. Samples were collected strictly following GEOTRACES guidelines (Cutter et al., 2017; https://www.geotraces.org) and analysed exactly as per Rapp et al., 2017 ( Anal. Chim. Acta; doi:10.1016/j.aca.2017.05.008). Concentrations were intercalibrated with GEOTRACES reference materials SAFe S and GSC (Bruland Research Lab), with exception of dissolved Cd data. Information on the analytical procedure including reference materials and limits of detection can be found in related published manuscripts, the PhD thesis of Stephan Krisch (Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel) or can be obtained from the authors upon request. Table caption: Measured concentrations of dissolved trace elements in Fram Strait sampled during GEOTRACES expedition GN05 (PS100) between 21 July-1 September 2006. Uncertainty is calculated as one standard deviation (1σ, STD) to replicate measurements via ICP-MS. ND = no data. Use of quality flags (QF) according to GEOTRACES policy (https://www.geotraces.org/geotraces-quality-flag-policy/). Plesae note, dissolved Cd data is not quality controlled. Somes samples were pooled (indicated in column "Bottle") from different bottles at one depth; the concentrations reflects the mean and the corresponding uncertainty is calculated as the standard deviation to replicate measurements. Trace metal concentrations at station 24 may show larger variations between different bottles at one specific depth. Because station 24 is located at Dijmphna Sund entrance sill, we associate these discrepancies to the water column's strong lateral and vertical turbulence (see ucCTD physical oceanography data) (e.g. Mortensen et al. 2011, 2013, Carroll et al. 2017) that goes in hand with localized TM aggregation-dissolution and sediment resuspension processes, thus affecting TM fractionation (e.g. Homoky et al. 2012).

Description: BSRN is a project of the Data and Analysis Panel from the Global Energy and Water Exchange (GEWEX) and as such is aimed at detecting important changes in the Earth's radiation field at the Earth's surface which may be related to climate changes. The data are of primary importance in supporting the validation and confirmation of satellite and computer model estimates of these quantities. At a small number of stations (currently 76 in total, 51 active, 9 declared as inactive, 16 are closed) in contrasting climatic zones, covering a latitude range from 80°N to 90°S (see station maps), solar and atmospheric radiation is measured with instruments of the highest available accuracy and with high time resolution (1 to 3 minutes). This snapshot contains the data as well as quality flags for all radiation data submitted to the BSRN archive until 2023-03-31.

Description: The MOSES campaign ELBE 2023 covered the whole River Elbe from the source in the Czech Republic, the German freshwater part, the tidal Elbe river, towards the German Bight, where we try to follow the river plume with three ships by help of drifters. In the German freshwater Elbe, physico-chemical and biological parameters will be measured along the Elbe using the research vessel ALBIS from Schmilka (km 4, German border) to Geestacht (km 585, close to Hamburg) in a Langrangian approach. The scientific focus in 2023 was on pollutants, particularly pharmaceuticals, herbicides, and microplastics. For that, we sample not only water but also sediments, and use passive samplers. In addition, a land team sampled tributaries and effluents of weaste water treatment plants parallel to the ship.

Description: The genus Vibrio includes 〉 60 species that are autochthonous and ubiquitous aquatic microorganisms, members of the bacterial community in marine environments worldwide. Given their impact on human and animal health and the relative ease of their cultivation, Vibrio species have been well studied: the genus includes human and animal pathogens that have caused major diseases around the world (e.g. cholera or vibriosis). The dataset contains Vibrio spp. abundance and measurements of environmental parameters (temperature, salinity, total dissolved solids, pH, dissolved oxygen, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, total particulate matter, particulate organic matter and particulate inorganic matter), gathered at Mali Ston Bay in the Adriatic Sea. Water sampling was conducted at two locations: a floating cage fish farm (located near small island Maslinovac) and a control site (near island Pučenjak) at different depths (0.5 m, 5 m, 10 m and 18 m). The sampling period covers seasonal measurements between 2016 and 2019.

Description: The dataset contains pore water macronutrient (nitrate+nitrite, nitrite, ammonium, phosphate) concentration measurements, obtained from seven sediment cores collected from the Greenland margin and the Labrador Sea. Porewaters were extracted from the sediment cores using Rhizon samplers and frozen for transport. The frozen samples were thawed according to GoSHIP protocols and analysed for inorganic macronutrients using a SEAL analytical AAIII segmented flow colorimetric auto-analyser. Seawater nutrient reference materials (KANSO Ltd. Japan) were also analysed to check analyser performance and to guarantee the quality control of the final reported data. The typical uncertainty of the analytical results were between 2-3%, and the limits of detection for nitrate and phosphate were 0.02 mmol/m3, and 0.01 mmol/m3 for nitrite. Description: Samples for benthic pigments (Chlorophyll a (Chl a) and phaeopigments) on the Northeast Greenland shelf have been collected with R/V Polarstern during PS109 between September and October 2017 using a camera-equipped multiple corer (TV-MUC; core area 0.007 m²). Upon arrival on deck, a 10 ml cut-off syringe was gently pushed into the sediment surface of three MUC cores (until 5 cm sediment depth) and then stored at -80°C. In the laboratory, the frozen samples were sliced into 1cm intervals and then analyzed using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) after Wright et al., 2005.

Description: Sediment porewater chemistry (nutrient, DIC, sulfide and sulfate) on the Northeast Greenland shelf were assessed with R/V Polarstern during PS109 between September and October 2017 using two cores with pre-drilled holes mounted on a multiple corer (MUC) a camera-equipped multiple corer (TV-MUC; core area 0.007 m²). Upon arrival on deck, Rhizon samplers were inserted carefully into the holes with intervals of 1 cm until 10 cm sediment depth, and 2 cm intervals until 20 cm sediment depth to extract the sediment porewater. To get a total of 9 ml/l porewater for each depth interval, the porewater from both cores was pooled for each depth. For the analysis of DIC, 2 ml/l porewater from each depth was transferred to a glass vial which had been pre-treated with HgCl₂ and stored at 4°C. DIC concentrations were measured using a flow injection system equipped with the Spark Optimas auto-sampler (model 820, Ambacht, Netherlands). For the determination of porewater nutrients, 4 ml/l of porewater was sampled with acid-washed Sarstedt Vials and stored at -20°C. In the laboratory, 4 ml/l was subsampled for phosphate, silicate and ammonium, while 1 ml/l was subsampled for nitrate and nitrite, and subsequently analyzed with a Continuous Segmented Flow Analyser (QuAAtro39, SEAL Analytical, Norderstedt, Germany).

Description: This data contains monitoring data of the RV ALKOR cruise AL585 conducted in January 2023 (January 23rd – January 31st) in the Western Baltic Sea by the University of Hamburg. The cruise was part of the 5-year monitoring programme Winter cod 2021-25 (Monitoring winter spawning activity of Western Baltic cod (Gadus morhua) (2021-25)) of the University of Hamburg aiming at investigating the early-winter spawning activity of Western Baltic cod to identify potential climate-induced shifts in spawning phenology. The data set includes cod single fish analysis data. All single fish measurements were made directly on board. Full wet weights of cod were measured and subsequently cod were gutted and liver weights, gonad weights and sexes, gutted wet weights (i.e., gutted wet mass), gonad stages and liver nematode infestations were recorded, and Otoliths were taken.

Description: The case study of Dún Laoghaire Harbour in Ireland from 1925–1931 illustrates the challenges of accurately digitizing marigrams. The methodology involves digitizing the original marigram trace and the underlying grid at the nearest foot interval for each given hour to assess offsets. By subtracting the digitized foot interval from the known foot interval, differences are determined and then subtracted from each hourly trace value. This comparison between the original and adjusted data, where the upper and lower bounds were consistently aligned with the top line thickness during calibration, enhances the accuracy of final sea level data to the 10 mm level per year of data. The accompanying paper outlines the digitization and adjustment methodology, along with the compilation of key metadata. The attached metadata file in the dataset download explains the structure of the dataset, including its levels. The accurately digitized records from 1925 to 1931 can help us understand sea level changes over time.
