Lange Zeit wurde ihm vor allem die Rolle eines Regierungssprechers zugeschrieben und seine Behauptung, dass er den Kaiser als Philosoph lobt, für reine Rhetorik gehalten. Diese Arbeit geht unter der Prämisse des Akzeptanzmodells vor allem der Frage nach, wie der große Erfolg Themistios’ zu erklären ist, der immerhin Hauptredner auf vier aufeinanderfolgende Kaiser war. Die textnahe Untersuchung der Reden zeigt, dass sich Themistios als nicht-christlicher Philosoph stark von den neuplatonischen Philosophen seiner Zeit unterscheidet und vor allem diese Themistios abgesprochen haben, als Philosoph zu sprechen. Ein Ergebnis der Untersuchung ist, dass die Gruppe der nicht-christlichen Philosophen weniger homogen war als bisher vermutet, und es bei Themistios eine größere Nähe zu den christlichen Herrschaftsvorstellungen, gibt als bislang angenommen. Es zeigt sich, dass Themistios’ Vorstellung eines guten Herrschers mit dem der Neuplatoniker nicht zu vereinbaren ist und diese jedoch bei dem Gros der Eliten großen Anklang fand. For a long time, the role of a government spokesman was attributed to him and his claim that he praised the emperor as a philosopher was considered pure rhetoric. Based on the premise of the acceptance model, this work primarily examines the question of how Themistios' great success can be explained, given that he was the main speaker for four successive emperors. The textual examination of the speeches shows that Themistios, as a non-Christian philosopher, differs greatly from the Neoplatonic philosophers of his time and that they in particular denied Themistios the right to speak as a philosopher. One result of the study is that the group of non-Christian philosophers was less homogeneous than previously assumed, and that Themistios was closer to Christian ideas of domination than previously assumed. It turns out that Themistios' idea of a good ruler cannot be reconciled with that of the Neoplatonists and yet it was very popular with the majority of the elites. Themistios can therefore be regarded as one of the first political philosophers.

This applies not only to the period of the late Republic, in which triumphal processions were fiercely contested, but also to the early imperial period, in which the ritual increasingly disappeared from everyday life. In addition to texts that refer back to the Roman triumph, this volume examines above all those that inscribe the triumph as a model performatively or metaphorically: While Caesar immortalises his own campaign in De bello Gallico, Pliny the Elder presents his Naturalis Historia as a triumph of science. Cicero and Vitruvius transfer the concept to the intellectual realms of rhetoric and architecture, and the early imperial Laus Pisonis makes the life of an imperial aristocrat appear as a single triumphal procession. The notion of conceptual metaphor makes it possible to understand the triumph as an intertextual and intermedial model and to examine its actualisation in different contexts. By systematising the heterogeneous texts, taking cultural studies concepts into account, this volume makes an important contribution to the study of ancient aesthetics and cultural identity.

Die vorliegende Studie erprobt an diesem begrenzten Textbestand Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der Erschließung von Fassungsvarianten, die den erhaltenen Handschriften zeitlich vorausgehen. Einen Anhaltspunkt hierfür liefern die bereits im 19. Jh. konstatierten spezifischen Verteilungsverhältnisse von Wort- und Versvarianten in der Überlieferung. Diese nämlich führen zur Vermutung, dass die Neidhart-Überlieferung auf eine Vorlage mit Wahlmöglichkeiten zurückgeht – d.h. auf eine Vorlage, die zu einzelnen Textelementen alternative Lesarten bot, zwischen denen bei der Liedproduktion gewählt werden konnte. Auf der Basis dieses Textentstehungsmodells lässt sich – so die These des vorliegenden Buches – die in R angezeigte Fassungsvarianz weitgehend rekonstruieren. There is also no serious hope that global challenges such as climate, inequality or migration can be tackled without scientific research and reflection. Every society and every government is therefore dependent on science. For democracies, however, the question of the relationship between politics and science arises again in a special way, since science there appears to be something that concerns everyone and must therefore be publicly negotiated. The volume 'Public Reason? Science in Democracy 'addresses the question of the difficulties encountered by the ideal of a public and reason-led discourse on the relevance of scientific results in modern democracies. Based on questions as diverse as the problems of scientific policy advice, the relationship between science and the media, the possibilities and limits of citizen science and the role of ethics and politics in the university, the contributions presented open up new perspectives on the complex relationship between science, politics and media and non-media public.
    Description: Es gibt keine Gesellschaft, die nicht von der modernen Wissenschaft und ihren Folgen betroffen wäre.     Description: This study investigates the function of the recourse to the messianic tradition of Judaism among German-Jewish intellectuals in the first third of the 20th century. Messianic figures of thought play an important role in the Jewish discourse of identity. Moreover, they are used productively in the creation of general theories in the realm of cultural studies, especially regarding the philosophy of language and history and the theological-political complex. Here, all the considered authors (Benjamin, Bloch, Broch, Buber, Landauer, Rosenzweig, Scholem) secularize Jewish Messianism in one way or another, thus transforming the Messiah into the messianic. This also means, however, that the messianic figures of speech include not only figures of thought but also rhetorical figures of speech or tropes that reflect various constellations of sacrality and secularity in the modern era. Kontroverstheologie ist zu einem gewissen Grad immer auch „making of“: Im Fall des Tractatus contra Graecos und von Werken seines theologischen Kontextes werden Bilder des jeweils Anderen bzw. des realen oder literarischen Gesprächspartners transportiert, der – wenn er den eigenen Erwartungen an den Verlauf und die Lösung der Frage nach der Kircheneinheit nicht entsprach – vom Partner zum Feindbild wurde. Die Analyse dieser Bilder zeigt: Unter einer oft polemischen Textoberfläche verbirgt sich bisweilen eine weit originellere Theologie, als man diesem Textgenre zutrauen würde. Diese Theologie heraus- und in die Skizze mittelalterlicher Ekklesiologie einzuarbeiten ist das zentrale Leitmotiv dieses Buches.

    Description: The terms ´logos of reason` and ´logos of belief` refer to two important aspects of western culture at the beginning of the Christian era. On the one hand there is the classical tradition, with its comprehensive claim to be able to explain the truth about reality by means of the logos. On the other hand there is the Christian message, which proclaims the self-revelation of God in the form of the Son, and so also claims for itself the truth about God, mankind and the world. The semantic ambiguity of the term ´logos` provided the occasion for a controversy that unfolded among the educated. The contributions to this volume present aspects of the controversy, and attempt to illuminate the connection between culture, belief and transmission against its historical background.

Der engagierte Sozialdemokrat und Hitlergegner ist 1933 der erste prominente Schutzhäftling in München. 1934 sieht er sich schließlich gezwungen, in einer dramatischen Flucht über Italien nach New York ins Exil zu gehen. Seine ausführlich eingeleiteten und kommentierten Erinnerungen sind ein bewegendes Zeitzeugnis. Das exemplarische Leben eines zu Unrecht vergessenen Demokraten und Hitlergegners bietet Anlass, darüber nachzudenken, welchen Aderlass die deutsche Kultur durch die Vertreibung und Ermordung der Juden erlitten hat.

    Description: Die Arbeit bietet die erste umfangreiche, empirisch fundierte Religionsgeschichtsschreibung der jüdischen Gemeinden in China und Hong Kong nach der Kulturrevolution. Zahlreiche Synagogen entstehen, das jüdisch-religiöse Leben pluralisiert und partikularisiert sich wie vorher noch nie, trotz chinesischer Vorsicht gegenüber ausländischen Religionen und geschichtlicher Ereignisse wie der Übergabe Hong Kongs an die VR China. Zugleich ist das Werk auch die erste religionswissenschaftliche Beschäftigung mit Religion und Expatriates, m.a.W. mit Religion unter den Bedingungen kurzfristiger, nicht auf Integration hin ausgerichteter Migration. Die aufgeführten religiösen Transformationen beweisen, dass die religiöse Einstellung der Menschen in der Ferne eine Eigendynamik entwickelt und sich nicht nur als Nebenwirkung im Prozess der Verfolgung anderer Zielsetzungen wie die Integration oder der Kampf um staatliche Anerkennung verändert. Die Ergebnisse werfen auch allgemein ein neues Licht auf diasporabezogene Prozesse und erweitern klassische Konzepte wie ‚Heimat‘ oder ‚diasporisches Bewusstsein‘.

    Description: In his letters, the church scholar Jerome describes a deep inner rift between Virgil and the gospels, between Cicero and the apostles. This volume traces late ancient processes of cultural hybridization using methods from digital quote analysis. By looking at quotes from the Aeneid, it examines the narrative strategies employed by Jerome to process the tension-filled relationship between classical antiquity and Christianity.
    Description: In seinen rhetorisch äußerst versierten Briefen thematisiert der Kirchenlehrer Hieronymus eine tiefe innere Zerrissenheit zwischen Vergil und den Evangelien, zwischen Cicero und den Aposteln. Der vorliegende Band spürt diesen kulturellen Transformationsprozessen anhand der Intertextualitätsstrategie des Hieronymus nach. Das Erkenntnisinteresse ist dabei zweigeteilt in einen methodischen und einen inhaltlichen Teil. Einerseits werden digitale Verfahren der Zitatanalyse (weiter)entwickelt und evaluiert. Mit den computergestützten Verfahren wird der Bestand an Zitaten am Beispiel der Aeneis um mehr als ein Drittel deutlich erweitert und dabei zugleich das theoretische Zitatkonzept maßgeblich geschärft. Andererseits wird mit hermeneutischen Verfahren eine Zitattypologie erstellt, mittels derer nicht nur die ‚Grenze‘ der Textinterpretation aufgezeigt, sondern auch ein differenzierteres Bild der Zitiertechnik des Hieronymus gezeichnet wird. Die Arbeit legt eine sprachlich-stilistische Hybridisierung offen, die eine modifizierte und vertiefte Einsicht in die tatsächlichen, untergründigen Anverwandlungen des klassisch-heidnischen Literaturerbes durch den frühchristlichen Autor ermöglicht.

    Description: Gibt es überzeugende Überforderungseinwände gegen anspruchsvolle moralische Auffassungen? In der vorliegenden Abhandlung werden Überforderungseinwände sorgfältig charakterisiert, systematisch eingeordnet und argumentativ verteidigt. Unter Berücksichtigung der wichtigsten Beiträge zum Thema wird gezeigt, dass gewisse Moraltheorien oder -prinzipien zurückgewiesen werden können, weil sie zu viel von einzelnen Personen verlangen. Wenn moralische Forderungen die Grenzen dessen übersteigen, was vernünftigerweise von Menschen erwartet werden kann, dann lassen sie sich als zu anspruchsvoll kritisieren. Im Hinblick darauf, was für eine erfolgreiche Verteidigung von Überforderungseinwänden erforderlich ist, werden intuitionen-, theorie- und erklärungsbasierte Strategien geprüft. Dabei wird die These vertreten, dass Überforderungseinwände verteidigt werden können, wenn sich eine grundlegende und eigenständige Erklärung dafür finden lässt, weshalb anspruchsvolle moralische Auffassungen überfordernd sein können. In Auseinandersetzung mit den Ansätzen von Bernard Williams, Douglas W. Portmore und Samuel Scheffler wird daher ein entsprechender Vorschlag ausgearbeitet, der weder zu schwach noch zu stark oder zu wenig gut begründet ist.
