Description: The theory of Taylor and Maccoll (Ref,1) gives the surface pressure on an infinite cone in supersonic flow as a function of the cone vertex angle and the free stream Mach number and static pressure for a gas of vanishing viscosity. When a slender conical probe is used together with an impact pressure probe to determine the static pressure and Mach number in a low density gas stream, it is desirable to have some theoretical estimate of the effect of viscous boundary layer on the probe readings. Theoretical and experimental results with respect to impact probes have been presented in Refs. 5 and 6. A simple approximation for a conical probe based on linearized supersonic flow and compressible boundary layer theory is presented here.

Description: Ingersoll-Rand Research, Inc.'s use of COSMIC's computer program MERIDL permits designers to evaluate performance and efficiency characteristics to be expected from the pump's impeller. It also provides information that enables a trained hydraulic engineer to make design improvements. Company was able to avoid the cost of developing new software and to improve some product design features.

Description: Ball Metal's design of ducting and controls for series of roof top heat exchangers was inspired by Tech Briefs. Heat exchangers are installed on eight press and coating lines used to decorate sheet metal. The heat recovery system provides an estimated energy savings of more than $250,000 per year.

Description: A regenerator assembly for a gas turbine engine has a hot side seal assembly formed in part by a cast metal engine block having a seal recess formed therein that is configured to supportingly receive ceramic support blocks including an inboard face thereon having a regenerator seal face bonded thereto. A pressurized leaf seal is interposed between the ceramic support block and the cast metal engine block to bias the seal wear face into sealing engagement with a hot side surface of a rotary regenerator matrix.

Description: The Mass Flowmeter is a device used to measure flow of oxygen in spacecraft's life support system. Tylan Corporation's Mass Flow Controller's major application is accurate control of reactive gases-- such as hydrogen, phosphine and silane as they are diffused at extremely high temperatures into silicon wafers. Wafers are ultimately cut up into integrated circuits or "chips" for electronic products. Precise process control afforded by the Mass Flow Controller makes it possible to produce circuit chips of greater performance at lower cost.

Description: A COSMIC (Computer Software Management and Information Center) program called RAVFAC (Radiation View Factor Program) enables Western Electric Company to study heat transfer processes to develop new manufacturing application. RAVFAC, Radiation View Factor Program is used in analyzing high temperature processing in manufacturing semiconductor wafers. It helps assess new designs by calculating heat transfer to determine temperature variation. The program has been extremely cost effective.

Description: To provide combustion stability in burners over a wide range of flow conditions, a coaxial injector is provided which includes an outer annular sleeve for introduction of one reactant and a hollow pintle with spaced slots for introduction of another reactant to impinge on the first reactant. The slots are staggered in location and size to permit initial interlocking of the reactants and, therefore, increased mixing and improved combustion performance.

Description: A stacked-disc structure is comprised of a stack of annular discs (13) scalloped along the outer edge to provide lobes (13a) and etched on one side to provide lands (13a). A web (13d) is retained in the lobes to strengthen the discs so that they will not collapse due to high fluid pressure. The stack of discs is retained by a housing (10) having a fluted interior wall to retain the ends of the lobes. End plates (11 and 12) secure the stack of discs with a spacer (14) at one end having lands (14a) on lobes which match the lobes of the stacked discs to allow fluid to flow into, or out of, the spaces between the lobes of the stacked discs. The spaces between the lands on the etched discs provide passages for fluid flow into or out of the hollow core of the stack. The height of the lands (i.e., depth of the etch) determines the size of the smallest particle that will be permitted to flow through. The stacked-disc structure may be connected to the inlet of a valve, or be incorporated into the valve housing on the inlet side of the valve seat to assure substantially constant fluid velocity, and thereby reduce valve noise when the valve is operated.
