Production of two highly abundant 2-methyl-branched fatty acids by blooms of the globally significant marine cyanobacteria Trichodesmium erythraeum. ACS Omega, 6(35), (2021): 22803–22810, https://doi.org/10.1021/acsomega.1c03196.
Description: The bloom-forming cyanobacteria Trichodesmium contribute up to 30% to the total fixed nitrogen in the global oceans and thereby drive substantial productivity. On an expedition in the Gulf of Mexico, we observed and sampled surface slicks, some of which included dense blooms of Trichodesmium erythraeum. These bloom samples contained abundant and atypical free fatty acids, identified here as 2-methyldecanoic acid and 2-methyldodecanoic acid. The high abundance and unusual branching pattern of these compounds suggest that they may play a specific role in this globally important organism.

Description: This project was carried out from November 2008 for about two years. Seven laboratories of the research center including: Chromatography, Instrumental Analysis, Aquatic zoology, Sample preparation, Histology, Plankton and Benthos were selected for the accreditation. The quality manual of the test laboratories was written following the general requirements of ISO/IEC 17025. During the establishment of the system standardization of the test methods, calibration of the equipment, test methods validation, uncertainty estimation of measurement and update and improvement of physical conditions of the laboratories were performed. The technical and quality management competence of the laboratories were evaluated by the auditors from DGA (the German Accreditation System for Testing Laboratories), which is signatory of ILAC (International Laboratory Accreditation Co-operation). The laboratories officially accredited by DGA, after the successful completion of the accreditation process (including implementation of corrective actions for the detected nonconformities). The accreditation is valid from 2009-11-12 to 2014-11-11. Production of reliable results of the test methods from national and international scientific organizations' point of view as well as facilitation in development of bilateral and multilateral relations with them can be considered as the advantages of the system establishment. Moreover, exchange of the relevant scientific information and experiences among the researchers will be facilitated.

Description: Padina boergesenii is one of the most abundant brown algae distributed in the north of Persian Gulf and Oman Sea. In this study after sampling and preparation of Padina boergesenii by Chroform-Etanol (3-1) solvent and by Methanol has been extract. Separation and purification of the compounds was carried out using thin layer, general and inverse column chromatography, Cephadex and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Structural elucidation of the constituents was based on the data obtained from H-NMR, 13C-NMR, HSQC, HMBC, DEPT and Cephadex LH-20. The steroids compounds separated from above alga were identified as 22dehydrocholesterol (1), cholesterol (2), fucosterol (3), β-sitosterol (4), stigmasterol (5), ostreasterol (6) and two epimer of hyroxyestrol(7), based on their spectral data and from comparison with those previously reported in the literature.

Description: In this paper, the nematocyst venom of the crambionella orsini jellyfish was fractionated by sizeexclusion and anion-exchange chromatography. Crambionella orsini is a jellyfish common to the Persian Gulf. The results of the mentioned methods have been investigated. The crambionella orsini’s venom has a hemolytic effect, which is similar to the other species. After the extraction of the nematocyst venom, the crude venom was partially purified using sephadex G-200 gel filtration and DEAE anion exchange chromatography. Protein elution was monitored by UV detection at 28 0nm. To determine the hemolytic fraction, every fraction was injected to 3 mice via their tail vein. Finally, all the data from both chromatography methods were compared. The gel filtrations second fraction and the first and second fractions of the anion exchange chromatography showed hemolytic activity. Determining an appropriate method for the purification of this venom can help find a comprehensive method for other marine venoms, especially jellyfish venoms, and may eventually help find specific antidotes for the stings of jellyfish of these species.

Description: Processing Crustaceans results large amount of shell left overs. Chitin a natural polymer, constitutes the major part of this waste. Optimal application of this material in different fields may bring about a new era of activity based on chitin industry. Practically, large amounts of crustacean left overs is wasted. Glucosamine and chitosan, with a wide application are being made from these wastes. Heating chitin in the presence of sodium hydroxide, under nitrogen leads to formation of chitosan with 70 - 90% purity degree. In presence of concentrated hydrochloric acid, chitin is converted into glucosamine with 60 - 70% purity degree. Chitin and glucosamine are widely used in sewage treatment, glue production. Food industries, cosmetics paper mills, agriculture, medicine, dentistry, pharmaceutics, textile chromatography photograiry etc.

Description: Sea is one of the great resources of food stuffs, chemicals and industrial material. Shrimp, Crab and Lobster having a good taste and Iots of protein are among the most sought after organism. Iran enjoys a vast expand of water bodies including Caspian Sea, Oman Sea and Persian Gulf coasts as well as inland waters. Every year a large quantity of aquatic organisms are being captured in Iran. Chitin is the second most important polysaccharide found in by - products after cellulose, This compound is easily extracted within two stages of demineralization anti deproteinization with 10 - 30% efficiency. Chitin is being used in textiles, paper mills and medical industries to manufacture better quality good. In photography, food industries, pharmacology, chromatography and agriculture, chitin has a very important usage. Chitin is the primary material for synthesis of chitosan and glucosamine, both of which have industrial, chemical and pharmaceutical usage. Up to now, more than 300 use have been reported for chitin in the literature.
