    Description: I bacini intramontani dell’Appennino centro-meridionale sono soggetti, sin dalla loro genesi (Pleistocene inferiore), a deformazioni del suolo, la cui non uniforme distribuzione e la cui diversa entità sono una risposta all’attività di faglie, intersecanti e bordanti le pianure, e al costipamento differenziale dei depositi costituenti le successioni sedimentarie di riempimento. Al fine di valutare la distribuzione spaziale dei movimenti verticali e le relative velocità, e di interpretarne correttamente le cause, è stato affrontato uno studio multidisciplinare che ha previsto l’elaborazione di dati radar con tecnica PSInSAR, lo studio geomorfologico e strutturale e l’analisi stratigrafica di dati di sottosuolo della piana di Venafro, ampia depressione tettonica interposta tra i M. delle Mainarde-M. di Venafro ed i M. del Matese e drenata dal F. Volturno. L’interpolazione dei dati PS, effettuata in ambiente GIS, riferita a due intervalli di tempo, 1995–2000 (ERS) e 2003–2008 (ENVISAT) ha permesso di valutare i ‘cumulative vertical displacements’ (mm), i ‘displacement rates’ (mm/a) e il ‘gradient field’ dei ‘displacement rates’, consentendo di individuare alcuni settori del bacino che si distinguono per tassi di subsidenza superiori alla media e per comportamento deformativo costante nel tempo. Risulta evidente una correlazione tra la distribuzione spaziale del quadro deformativo di natura interferometrica, lo sviluppo geometrico delle faglie che interessano la piana e la natura litologica del riempimento sedimentario. I valori maggiori di subsidenza si registrano nel settore centrale della piana, probabilmente indotti da un maggiore spessore dei depositi di riempimento, nonché dalla presenza di depositi argillo-sabbiosi poco addensati e più suscettibili al costipamento, così come dalla presenza di alcuni lineamenti tettonici orientati NE-SW e NW-SE. In particolare, i valori maggiori si registrano a valle di una scarpata morfologica, orientata NW-SE, coincidente anche con un importante ‘knick point’ del F. Volturno, oltre che a valle di una faglia, orientata NW-SE (Faglia dell’’Aquae Juliae’), attiva in tempi storici per aver dislocato l’acquedotto romano.

    Description: The Corinthian Gulf in Greece, is the most active of a series of extending grabens which accomodate the deformation in the highly seismic Aegean region. The geodetic network established in the region has about 200 points: 50 1st order points and ~150 2nd order points. The network covers an area of about 100 x 80 km2, which correspond to an average density of 1 point every 5 km2. This dense network allows to study the main active faults in the region. Eleven field surveys were organized in 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, June 1995, October 1995, 1997, and 2001. Two earthquakes occurred in the vicinity during the ten years period: the 1992, 18 November Ms=5.9 Galaxidi earthquake and the 1995, 15 June 1995 Ms=6.2 Aigion one. With respect to the stable Europe, we find for Peloponnessos an average displacement rate of 30 mm/yr in the N215° direction, similar to that found in previous studies. Our results show that most of the deformation in the Corinthian Gulf is localizes off-shore, in a narrow band, in the central part of the Gulf. The extension rate measured over 10 years is 11 mm/yr in the N185° direction in the middle of the Gulf (Xiloxastro) and 16 mm/yr in the N185° direction in its western part (Aigion). The southern block appears un-deformed, except the region of Aigion event. Using CNES DIAPASON software, we derived 85 interferograms of the Corinthian Gulf from 38 raw ERS SAR images acquired between 1992 and 1999. The interferograms sampling the 1995 earthquake show a clear coseismic signal reaching 250 +/- 15 mm at Psaromita cape, a value consistent with the GPS measurements. No post-seismic motion, within the error bars of SAR interferometry (+/- 15 mm), is observed during the 1995-1999 period.

    Description: Within the 2500 km stretch of the Himalayas, a narrow window between longitudes 88.185 E and 88.936 E in the frontal Himalayas in North Bengal, crisscrossed by several active fault traces, presents an interesting region for crustal deformation study. We have estimated velocities of 8 GPS stations located in this area and the accumulating strain rate by two different methods. A total shortening of 11.1 ± 1.5 mm yr)1 is occurring across a set of four E–W running faults: Gorubathan, Matiali, Chalsa and Baradighi. The strain rate becomes higher in the NE part of the network, reaching )(0.25 ± 0.12) lstrain yr)1 with azimuth 21 . A statistically significant extension of 10.9 ± 1.6 mm yr)1 is estimated across the Gish transverse fault with a maximum strain rate of 0.36 ± 0.08 lstrain yr)1 with azimuth 103 . The accumulating strain will be probably released through future earthquakes.

    Description: Earthquake source inversions based on space-borne Synthetic Aperture Radar interferometry (InSAR) are used extensively. Typically, however, only the line-of-sight (LoS) surface displacement component is measured, which is mainly sensitive to the vertical and E–W deformations, although well-established methods also exist to estimate the flight-path component, which is highly sensitive to the N–S displacement. With high-resolution sensors, these techniques are particularly appealing, because accuracies in the order of 3 cm can be achieved, while retaining spatial resolutions between 45 m and a few km, depending on the required level of filtering. We discuss the application to COSMO-SkyMed SAR imagery of the Spectral Diversity or Multi Aperture Interferometry technique, presenting the first SAR flight-path displacement field associated with the Mw 6.3, 2009 L’Aquila event (central Apennines). Finally, we observe and characterize a previously unknown misregistration pattern.

    Description: We present an application of the novel SISTEM approach, to obtain the dense 3D ground deformation pattern produced by the April 6, 2009, Mw 6.3 L’Aquila earthquake. This event, characterized by a SW-dipping normal fault with thousands of foreshocks and aftershocks located in the depth range 5–15 km, is the most destructive to have struck the Abruzzo region since the major 1703 seismic sequence. The surface deformation, revealed by the SISTEM through the integration of GPS with interferometric measurements from the ENVISAT and ALOS satellites, shows a deformed area extending towards SE along the Aterno valley, in agreement with seismological and other geodetic observations. We inverted the SISTEM results using an optimization algorithm based on the genetic algorithm, providing an accurate spatial characterization of ground deformation. Our results improve previous kinematic solutions for the Paganica fault and allow identification of additional faults that have contributed to the observed complex ground deformation pattern.

    Description: Detailed stratigraphical, archaeological, micropalaeontological, archaeometrical and petrochemical analyses of samples from trenches and boreholes at insula of Casti Amanti, in Pompeii, allowed a faithful reconstruction of the recent environmental evolution of the site. The present data clearly indicate the alternation of both subaerial and shallow marine conditions during Holocene times. Taking into account the relative local sea level variations, a ~30 m ground uplift event in the last 6 kyr (with an average vertical uplift rate of ~5 mm/yr) was inferred for the first time.

    Description: A twenty-year period of severe land subsidence evolution in the Alto Guadalentín Basin (southeast Spain) is monitored using multi-sensor SAR images, processed by advanced differential interferometric synthetic aperture radar (DInSAR) techniques. The SAR images used in this study consist of four datasets acquired by ERS-1/2, ENVISAT, ALOS and COSMO-SkyMed satellites between 1992 and 2012. The integration of ground surface displacement maps retrieved for different time periods allows us to quantify up to 2.50 m of cumulated displacements that occurred between 1992 and 2012 in the Alto Guadalentín Basin. DInSAR results were locally compared with global positioning system (GPS) data available for two continuous stations located in the study area, demonstrating the high consistency of local vertical motion measurements between the two different surveying techniques. An average absolute error of 4.6 ± 4 mm for the ALOS data and of 4.8 ± 3.5 mm for the COSMO-SkyMed data confirmed the reliability of the analysis. The spatial analysis of DInSAR ground surface displacement reveals a direct correlation with the thickness of the compressible alluvial deposits. Detected ground subsidence in the past 20 years is most likely a consequence of a 100–200 m groundwater level drop that has persisted since the 1970s due to the overexploitation of the Alto Guadalentín aquifer system. The negative gradient of the pore pressure is responsible for the extremely slow consolidation of a very thick (〉 100 m) layer of fine-grained silt and clay layers with low vertical hydraulic permeability (approximately 50 mm/h) wherein the maximum settlement has still not been reached.

    Description: In May 2012, two moderate earthquakes (Mw = 6.1 and 5.9), associated with a noticeable aftershock sequence affected the eastern sector of the Po Plain, northern Italy. The co-seismic areal uplift events are crucial for a better understanding of the seismotectonics of the broader area and thus for a better assessment of the seismic hazard in the region. In the present study, we compared the results of analyses based on high precision levelling, the DInSAR technique, the distribution of liquefaction occurrences, the geomorphological map of the area and the structural model of the region. The DInSAR technique revealed a marked uplift of the ground (up to 17 cm), which was confirmed by high precision levelling. The results of both techniques substantially agreed, although there were some considerable local discrepancies, due to well-documented and diffuse liquefaction phenomena. Some strategic precautions when planning high-precision levelling networks are suggested.

    Description: The 11 March 2011 Tohoku earthquake was the strongest event recorded in recent historic seismicity in Japan. Several researchers reported the deformation and possible mechanism as triggered by a mega thrust fault located offshore at the interface between the Pacific and the Okhotsk Plate. The studies to estimate the deformation in detail and the dynamics involved are still in progress. In this paper, coseismic GPS displacements associated with Tohoku earthquake are used to infer the amount of slip on the fault plane. Starting from the fault displacements configuration proposed by Caltech-JPL ARIA group and Geoazur CNRS, an optimization of these displacements is performed by developing a 3D finite element method (FEM) model, including the data of GPS-acoustic stations located offshore. The optimization is performed for different scenarios which include the presence of topography and bathymetry (DEM) as well as medium heterogeneities. By mean of the optimized displacement distribution for the most complete case (heterogeneous with DEM), a broad slip distribution, not narrowly centered east of hypocenter, is inferred. The resulting displacement map suggests that the beginning of the area of subsidence is not at east of MYGW GPS-acoustic station, as some researchers have suggested, and that the area of polar reversal of the vertical displacement is rather located at west of MYGW. The new fault slip distribution fits well for all the stations at ground and offshore and provides new information on the earthquake generation process and on the kinematics of Northern Japan area.

    Description: In this paper, the relationship between the dike-forming magmatic intrusions and the faulting process at Mount Etna is investigated in terms of Coulomb stress changes. As case study, a complete time-dependent 3-D finite element model for the 2002-2003 eruption at Mount Etna is presented. In the model, which takes into account the topography, medium heterogeneities and principal fault systems in a viscoelastic/plastic rheology, we sequentially activated three dike-forming processes and looked at the induced temporal evolution of the Coulomb stress changes, during the co-intrusive and post-intrusive periods, on Pernicana and Santa Venerina faults. We investigated where and when fault slips were encouraged or not, and consequently how earthquakes may have been triggered. Results show positive Coulomb stress changes for the Pernicana Fault in accordance to the time, location and depth of the 27th October 2002 Pernicana earthquake (Md = 3.5). The amount of Coulomb stress changes in the area of Santa Venerina Fault, as induced by dike-forming intrusions only, is instead almost negligible and, probably, not sufficient to trigger the 29th October Santa Venerina earthquake (Md = 4.4), occurred two days after the start of the eruption. The necessary Coulomb stress change value to trigger this earthquake is instead reached if we consider it as induced by the 27th October Pernicana biggest earthquake, combined with the dike-induced stresses.
