Abstract: This book covers tunnel construction and building construction and design. It has two parts. Part one is for the engineering practice of the subway tunnel through the base of the building in typical geological conditions, to study the mechanism and law of building damage caused by stratum deformation by in-situ monitoring, numerical simulation and theoretical analysis methods. At the same time, the risk management of subway tunnel through the bottom of the building is discussed. Second part, in view of the excavation and unloading of the foundation pit and the main structure loading in the process of high-rise building construction, discusses optimization of the construction scheme, systematic evaluation of the safety of the existing tunnel and control measures combined with the engineering practice. This book provides a valuable contribution to the field of tunnel construction and design and construction of building for both the engineering experts and graduate students as well.

These methods include all the well-known methods, like force-based or displacement-based methods, plus some other methods developed by the present authors or other authors that have reached a level of maturity and are applicable to a large class of steel building structures. For every method, detailed practical examples and supporting references are provided in order to illustrate the methods and demonstrate their merits. As a unique feature, the present book describes not just one, as it is the case with existing books on seismic design of steel structures, but various seismic design methods including application examples worked in detail. The book is a valuable source of information, not only for MS and PhD students, but also for researchers and practicing engineers engaged with the design of steel building structures.

Abstract: This book provides full-scale field tests of different types of pile foundations. For the testing, it includes static load tests which consider various loading orientations, dynamic load tests, inclinometer monitoring and tests that aim to determine the load transfer mechanism of pile foundation. This book also covers the up-to-date popular topic with detailed project studies. This includes the academic investigation of post-grouting technology effect on drilled shaft piles, the research of displacement and non-displacement precast pile foundation, the study of fiber-reinforced polymer material used in the geo-technical environment such as deep excavation pit in tunneling project, and the research of super-long and large diameter pile foundations. These investigations provide essential and academic information for researchers as well as engineers in role of Civil and Geotech. Not only the different types of the piles are studied, but also the relevant theory and literatures are reviewed. In this book, the diagrams are plotted in an easy way and the explanation of the diagrams and tables are described in detail. The research methods corresponding to the practical projects are detailed as well. Hence, it is useful as a reference for the students and researchers in civil and geotechnical engineering.

Description / Table of Contents: Introduction -- Dimensional Stone -- Aggregates -- Portland Cement -- Lime -- Gypsum Products -- Concrete -- Mortar -- Ceramic Materials -- Metals and Alloys -- Bituminous Materials -- Geosynthetics and other Plastics -- Wood and Cork -- Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW).
Abstract: Construction Materials is a comprehensive textbook covering all raw materials and products related to the construction processes, and not only those applied to building structures. The book is organized to help readers achieve competent knowledge about construction materials. At the beginning of the book the author offers the general concepts, definitions, and standards adopted worldwide for these materials to be used along the book. The central part of the text covers the primary construction materials required to manufacture concrete and mortars, the most relevant construction materials in the last century. Expressly, concrete and mortar are treated in detail in dedicated chapters per component. In addition, the author addresses other relevant materials in construction such as ceramic materials, metals and alloys, bituminous materials, and geosynthetic materials. Finally, since the construction industry is one of the largest single waste producing sector in the world, the last chapter outlines the main types and characteristics of construction and demolition waste (e.g. recycled aggregates). The book appeals to students but also professionals interested in construction materials and construction and civil engineering.

Description / Table of Contents: Analysis of the influence of atriums in seismic performance of RC primary school buildings -- Design Approach for an Irregular Hospital Building in Bucharest -- Performance of RC Beam Column Joint with Varying Hoop Reinforcement -- Seismic behaviour of torsionally-weak buildings with and without base isolators -- Seismic response of masonry building aggregates in historic centres: observations, analyses and tests.
Abstract: This volume contains papers of the 9th European Workshop on the Seismic Behaviour of Irregular and Complex Structures (9EWICS) held in Lisbon, Portugal, in 2020. This workshop, organized at Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, continued the successful three-annual series of workshops started back in 1996. Its organization had the sponsorship of Working Group 8 (Seismic Behaviour of Irregular and Complex Structures) of the European Association of Earthquake Engineering. This international event provided a platform for discussion and exchange of ideas and unveiled new insights on the possibilities and challenges of irregular and complex structures under seismic actions. The topics addressed include criteria for regularity, seismic design of irregular structures, seismic assessment of irregular and complex structures, retrofit of irregular and complex structures, and soil-structure interaction for irregular and complex structures. Beyond an excellent number of interesting papers on these topics, this volume includes the papers of the two invited lectures – one devoted to irregularities in RC buildings, including perspectives in current seismic design codes, difficulties in their application and further research needs, and another one dedicated to the challenging and very up to date topic in the area of seismic response of masonry building aggregates in historical centers. This volume includes 26 contributions from authors of 11 countries, giving a complete and international view of the problem. The holds particular interest for all the community involved in the challenging task of seismic design, assessment and/or retrofit of irregular and complex structures.
