Aging, Causes and Rejuvenation of Hematopoietic Stem Cells.
Abstract: This book renders a comprehensive understanding of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) from their embryonic development through adult maintenance to aging, in the studies conducted in zebrafish and mammals. Hematopoiesis provides a paradigm for understanding the development, maintenance, regeneration, aging and malignant transformation of mammalian organs. Sitting at the apex of the hematopoiesis hierarchy tree, HSCs orchestrate their proliferation, self-renewal, and differentiation to produce all the blood cell lineages throughout life, which represents the best example for somatic stem cell studies. In this book, key regulatory mechanisms for HSC self-renewal and differentiation are overviewed in an array of fields including epigenetics, metabolism and microenvironment regulation. It also highlights the HSC heterogeneity and clonal dynamics from the recent advanced single-cell technologies. This book elaborates on the research history of HSC studies and reveals how the insights from HSC studies shed light on their clinic application. It presents great value from the bench to the clinic.

Abstract: This book includes the impact, compression, vibration studies, and destructive and nondestructive techniques for bruise measurement. It is essential to detect bruises in the early stages of their formation and conduct a quantitative analysis of the degree of bruising, to ensure the accurate grading of bruised fruits and vegetables and reduce unnecessary economic losses. Bruise damage occurring between the point of harvest and consumption contributes the most to the decrease in fruit quality, reducing the market value and ultimately leading to significant reductions in potential revenue. SDG 12.3 aims to “by 2030, halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reduce food losses along production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses.” This book presents recent technological developments in bruise measurement, detection, and analysis of fresh horticultural produce. Given the rising demand for rapid and accurate methods of quality measurement in the horticultural produce industry, this book covers destructive and nondestructive techniques for bruise measurement. Selected applications of different nondestructive methods for various fresh produce commodities are also included. This book will interest graduate and undergraduate students, researchers, academics and engineers working in different aspects of the mechanical damage affected by postharvest handling practices, professionals working in the governments, and other authorities related to fresh horticultural produce quality, regulations, and safety. .

Abstract: This book comprehensively introduces non-destructive methods for food quality (i.e. external, internal, sensory, components, and microbiological indicators) detection, through optics, acoustics, chemistry, imaging, and bionic sensing. It highlights in-situ detection of food quality and safety, including principles, signal processing, and analysis of data, non-destructive detection system, and application in the food industry for each method. First, this book introduces the principles and characteristics of various food non-destructive methods. As non-destructive measurements always involve obtaining big data for each testing, this book also describes in detail the signal and big data processing for each non-destructive method. The chapters also introduce the rapid portable detection equipment for food and agricultural products developed in recent years, as well as the intelligent monitoring equipment in the process of food processing. Relevant application cases are provided to help readers better understanding how to apply non-destructive technology for food quality detection. In the noninvasive measurement of food quality, this book has a systematic introduction of the detection principle, data processing, and rapid detection system, in-field detection case studies. This book is novel and practical and can be used as a professional textbook for undergraduates majoring in food science and engineering. It can also be used as a reference book for scientific research and technical personnel engaged in the field of food quality and safety detection. .

Abstract: The book “Field Manual on Alien Flora of Kashmir Himalaya: Casual, Naturalised and Invasive Plants” has been prepared with two main goals in mind: (i) to promote awareness on the threats of invasive alien plants to biodiversity, ecology and environment, and (ii) to encourage research on, and management of, the alien plants. The Manual contains concise information on the taxonomy, ecology, invasion status, impacts, distribution and illustrated photo-plates of the alien plant species of Kashmir Himalaya, India. The Manual has three chapters: Chapter-I provides a general introduction to the discipline of invasion ecology. Chapter-II guides the readers on how to use the Manual, including brief information on the study region, methods, definitions and terminology used. Chapter-III comprises the bulk of this Manual, providing profile of 100 alien plant species with scientific information on the botanical, english and local names, taxonomic characters, ecological traits, current invasion status (casual, naturalised and invasive), impacts, native range, species’ distribution-map in Kashmir Himalaya and coloured illustrations that will aid in field identification. It is hoped that the Manual will increase awareness on the threats posed by plant invasions among all the stakeholders - researchers, land managers, policy makers, environmentalists, naturalists, citizen-scientists, students, and the general public. It will also help in promoting research, formulating policies and planning management actions to deal with invasive alien species.

Abstract: This edited book support Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG 2): Zero Hunger. This book summarizes the contribution of genetic engineering for sustainable crop improvement toward global food and health security, climate resilience and economic growth. The book acts as a compendium of research reports on recent developments in the arena of cisgenics or transgenics or genome editing of crop plants for tolerance to biotic or abiotic stresses, introgression of value-added traits, molecular pharming etc. Sustainable crop productivity, yield and nutrition are the major constrain for food and nutritional security for the human population especially, in developing countries where arable land per capita is shrinking while the human population is steadily increasing. Zero hunger and achieving food security is the top priority of the United Nations development goals. This book explains various methods of genetic transformation such as transgenic, cisgenic, and genome editing for crop improvement. It also encompasses the advantages of genetic engineering in plants and their scope for sustainable crop improvement. The importance, limitations, challenges, GM biosafety regulations, recent advancements and future prospects of GM crops are covered in various chapters. This book is of interest to teachers, researchers, plant tissue culturists, GM crop experts, research scholars, academicians, plant breeders, policymakers etc. Also, the book serves as additional reading material for undergraduate and graduate students of agriculture, forestry, ecology, soil science, and environmental sciences. National and international agricultural scientists and policymakers will also find this to be a useful read.
