Description / Table of Contents: The magnetic field of the Earth varies in space and time. Geomagnetism as research area that aims to describe and understand the sources of these variations is supported by two pillars: first, regular high-precision measurements in the global network of magnetic observatories and repeat stations are necessary to register the field and its variations at all. Second, mathematical methods are required in order to extract magnetic field models from this large data set. Methods applied to data offer insights in the mechanisms generating the magnetic field. This thesis covers both subjects. In a first part, following the description of the state of the art in observatory instrumentation, I explain in detail two instruments that have the potential to streamline the classical procedures: The Geomagnetic AUtomated SyStem GAUSS paves the way to automated absolute measurements, up to now only possible manually. The newly developed DI3 technique improves and simplies the standard manual measurements signicantly and thus reduces the requirements placed on observers. The second part deals with the mathematical tools available for geomagnetic field modelling. I focus on harmonic splines that can be derived from the classical approach of spherical harmonics. These base functions are interpolatory and have a localised shape while satisfying Laplaces equation. Hence, they are applicable to fit data regionally or globally. The harmonic splines are used with a data set made of repeat station and observatory measurements from Southern Africa. This region is of special interest because the field intensity is very low and and both spatial and temporal field gradients exist. Subdivided into an analysis of ancient (years 1961-2001) and recent (2005-2009) data, two continuous regional field models SAMS and X-SAMS are derived. From the analysis of the field models, a better understanding of the field behaviour is gained. Finally, the harmonic splines are used in a case study on globally distributed secular variation data. Rotating the data set in a system of coordinates aligned with the dipole axis and modelling it with the harmonic splines reveals the external origin of observed fast variations.

Description / Table of Contents: "Presenting a coherent synthesis of lithosphere studies, this book covers a range of geophysical methods (seismic reflection, refraction, and receiver function methods; elastic and anelastic seismic tomography; electromagnetic and magnetotelluric methods; thermal, gravity and rheological models), complemented by petrologic and laboratory data on rock properties. It also provides a critical discussion of the uncertainties, assumptions, and resolution issues that are inherent in the different methods and models of the lithosphere. Multidisciplinary in scope, global in geographical extent, and covering a wide variety of tectonics settings across 3.5 billion years of Earth history, this book presents a comprehensive overview of lithospheric structure and evolution. It is a core reference for researchers and advanced students in geophysics, geodynamics, tectonics, petrology, and geochemistry, and for petroleum and mining industry professionals"--
Description / Table of Contents: "Modern studies of Earth science suffer from fragmentation into a large number of sub-disciplines with limited dialog between them and artificial distinctions between the results based on different approaches. This problem has been particularly acute in the area of lithospheric research where different geophysical techniques have given rise to a multitude of definitions of the lithosphere - seismic, thermal, electrical, mechanical and petrological. This book presents a coherent synthesis of our current state-of-knowledge in lithosphere studies based on a full set of geophysical methods (seismic reflection, refraction, and receiver function methods; elastic and anelastic seismic tomography; electromagnetic and magnetotelluric methods; thermal, gravity and rheological models) and complemented by petrologic and laboratory data on rock properties. It also provides a critical discussion of the uncertainties, assumptions, and resolution issues that are inherent in the different methods and models"--

Description / Table of Contents: The Earth's Plasmasphere reviews the state of the art in plasmaspheric science based on the modern observations provded by ESA's CLUSTER and NASA's IMAGE spacecraft. The plasmasphere, discovered at the beginning of the space age, has remained largely unexplored territory. Now, with innovative observational techniques, new light is being shed on this key region of the magnetosphere. This book sketches the emerging overall picture of a highly structured plasma, sculpted by the ever-changing electromagnetic fields that result from the interaction of the solar wind with the magnetosphere.

Description / Table of Contents: This volume provides a synopsis of current research on volcanic processes, as gained through the use ofpalaeomagnetic and rock magnetic techniques. Thermoremanent magnetization information provides apowerful means of deciphering thermal processes in volcanic deposits, including estimating the emplacementtemperature of pyroclastic deposits, which allows us to understand better the rates of coolingduring eruption and transport. Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility and anisotropy of remanence areused primarily to investigate rock fabrics and to quantify flow dynamics in dykes, lava flows, and pyroclasticdeposits, as well as identify vent locations. Rock-magnetic characteristics allow correlation of volcanicdeposits, but also provide means to date volcanic deposits and to understand better their cooling history.Because lava flows are typically good recorders of past magnetic fields, data from them allow understandingof changes in geomagnetic field directions and intensity, providing clues on the origin of Earth's magneticfield.

Description / Table of Contents: Earth's magnetic field is currently changing dramatically. Is the observed decrease of the dipole moment indicating a future polarity transition? What would be the effects of such a drastic change on system Earth? Can any positive or negative effects on our biosphere or even humans be expected? This book gives a first overview about the geomagnetic field in general and serves as an introduction into geomagnetism. As the topic of the book covers a wide range of scientific disciplines, the first chapter summarises basic principles of geomagnetism and related fields including a historic overview, instruments and measurements, paleomagnetic fields, basics of dynamo theory, etc. The contributed chapters review major results of international activities aiming at understanding the causes and effects of geomagnetic field variations in view of the questions above.

Description / Table of Contents: This volume provides a comprehensive view on the different sources of the geomagnetic field both in the Earth’s interior and from the field’s interaction with the terrestrial atmosphere and the solar wind. It combines expertise from various relevant areas of geomagnetic and near Earth space research with the aim to better characterise the state and dynamics of Earth’s magnetic field. Advances in the exploitation of geomagnetic observations hold a huge potential not only for an improved quantitative description of the field source but also for a better understanding of the underlying processes and physics. Key is the separation of the field sources in the observations, especially, but not solely, during times of quiet geomagnetic conditions, when the most subtle geomagnetic effects can be identified and become significant. The collected articles are based on the current constellation of ground and space observations, and on state-of-the-art empirical models and physics-based simulations. Thus, it provides an in-depth overview over recent achievements, current limitations and challenges, and future opportunities in the field of geomagnetism and space sciences.

Description / Table of Contents: This book contains a co-ordinated series of papers considering how chemical changes in sediments, as they accumulate and lithify, affect their magnetization and how such changes can be monitored by studying their magnetic properties. It is especially relevant to sedimentologists, particularly those in exploration for hydrocarbons and sediment-hosted metals, as well as for geophysicists using the magnetization of sediments.

Description / Table of Contents: All fluxgate magnetometers are based on the theory of H.Aschenbrenner and G.Goubau developed in 1936 and the first fluxgates developed by F.Förster.Already the early satellites like putnik 3(Dolginov-Russia,1958), Mariner 4 (NASA/USA ,1964), the first German satellite AZUR (Musmann, 1969) studying the magnetic fields of the Earth, Moon, Venus, Mars and other planets were using fluxgate magnetometers up to the latest NASA/ESA investigations on CASSINI (1998),and ESA's Rosetta (2004) and the first Ion Engine spacecraft, NASA-DEEP-SPACE-ONE (Musmann/Kuhnke,1998), (see cover.) Very precise Earth magnetic field measurements in space have been made using fluxgate magnetometers in combination with scalar magnetometers (MAGSAT-Acuna, 1979; OERSTED-Primdahl,1999; CHAMP-Lühr,2000) Only a few detailed descriptions about the theory and how to design and calibrate space fluxgate magnetometers and how to get reliable accurate magnetic field component measurements in space have been published. Therefore the worldwide small space fluxgate magnetometer community decided to document and save all their relevant know-how on space fluxgate magnetometers in this book before retirement.

Description / Table of Contents: "The advent of accessible student computing packages has meant that geophysics students can now easily manipulate datasets and gain first-hand modeling experience - essential in developing an intuitive understanding of the physics of the Earth. Yet to gain a more in-depth understanding of physical theory, and to develop new models and solutions, it is necessary to be able to derive the relevant equations from first principles. This compact, handy book fills a gap left by most modern geophysics textbooks, which generally do not have space to derive all of the important formulae, showing the intermediate steps. This guide presents full derivations for the classical equations of gravitation, gravity, tides, earth rotation, heat, geomagnetism and foundational seismology, illustrated with simple schematic diagrams. It supports students through the successive steps and explains the logical sequence of a derivation - facilitating self-study and helping students to tackle homework exercises and prepare for exams"--

Description / Table of Contents: This unitary resource sets out the derivation of conservation, thermodynamic, and evolution equations used in modeling multiphase porous media systems. It includes detailed, multiscale applications and a forward-looking discussion of open research issues. Thermodynamically constrained averaging theory provides a consistent method for upscaling conservation and thermodynamic equations for application in the study of porous medium systems. The method provides dynamic equations for phases, interfaces, and common curves that are closely based on insights from the entropy inequality. All larger scale variables in the equations are explicitly defined in terms of their microscale precursors, facilitating the determination of important parameters and macroscale state equations based on microscale experimental and computational analysis. The method requires that all assumptions that lead to a particular equation form be explicitly indicated, a restriction which is useful in ascertaining the range of applicability of a model as well as potential sources of error and opportunities to improve the analysis.
Description / Table of Contents: Chapter 1 Elements of Thermodynamically Constrained Averaging Theory.- Chapter 2 Microscale Conservation Principles.- Chapter 3 Microscale Thermodynamics.- Chapter 4 Microscale Equilibrium Conditions.- Chapter 5 Microscale Closure for a Fluid Phase.- Chapter 6 Macroscale Conservation Principles.- Chapter 7 Macroscale Thermodynamics.- Chapter 8 Evolution Equations.- Chapter 9 Single-Fluid-Phase Flow.- Chapter 10 Single-Fluid-Phase Species Transport.- Chapter 11 Two-Phase Flow.- Chapter 12 Modeling Approach and Extensions.- Appendix A Considerations on Calculus of Variations.- Appendix B Derivations of Averaging Theorems.- Appendix C Constrained Entropy Inequality Derivations.- Index.
