    Keywords: geofluids
Description / Table of Contents: Frontiers in Geofluids is a collection of invited papers chosen to highlight recent developments in our understanding of geological fluids in different parts of the Earth, and published to mark the first ten years of publication of the journal Geofluids. The scope of the volume ranges from the fundamental properties of fluids and the phase relationships of fluids encountered in nature, to case studies of the role of fluids in natural processes. New developments in analytical and theoretical approaches to understanding fluid compositions, fluid properties, and geological fluid dynamics across a wide range of environments are included. A recurrent theme of research published in Geofluids is the way in which similar approaches can be applied to geological fluids in very different settings and this is reflected in the diverse range of applications of fluid studies that are included here. They include deep groundwater flow, hydrocarbons in faulted sedimentary basins, hydrothermal ores, and multiphase flow in mid-ocean ridge systems. Other topics covered are geothermal waters, crustal metamorphism, and fluids in magmatic systems. The book will be of great interest to researchers and students interested in crustal and mantle fluids of all sorts.

    Keywords: low-carbon growth ; emission ; greenhouse gas ; carbon ; Poland ; Europe
Description / Table of Contents: This study on Poland is part of the World Bank's series of low-carbon growth studies. It poses the question of how Poland, an EU member state, an industrialized 'Annex I' country for the purposes of international climate discussions,1 and an OECD member, can transition to a low emissions economy as successfully as it underwent transition to a market economy in the early 1990s. With a broad consensus that global coordinated action is needed to prevent dangerous climate change estimated to cost about 1 percent of global GDP) and with EU policies on climate change already in place, Poland faces immediate policy challenges. Could the country commit to more ambitious overall greenhouse gas mitigation targets for the longer term - to 2030 and beyond? What technological options are available, and how expensive are they compared with existing technologies? Would there be high costs in lost growth and employment? Over a shorter horizon, to 2020, what are the implications for Poland of implementing EU policies on climate change? The report addresses these questions while advancing the approach of the Bank's low carbon studies by integrating 'bottom-up' engineering analysis with 'top-down' economy-wide modeling.

Description / Table of Contents: Das vorliegende Werk dokumentiert die weltweit bekannten Torfmoos-Arten (Gattung Sphagnum) und enthält Bestimmungsschlüssel.

Description / Table of Contents: The polar regions have experienced some remarkable environmental changes in recent decades, such as the Antarctic ozone hole, the loss of large amounts of sea ice from the Arctic Ocean and major warming on the Antarctic Peninsula. The polar regions are also predicted to warm more than any other region on Earth over the next century if greenhouse gas concentrations continue to rise. Yet trying to separate natural climate variability from anthropogenic forcing still presents many problems. This book presents a thorough review of how the polar climates have changed over the last million years and sets recent changes within a long term perspective, as determined from ice and ocean sediment cores. The approach taken is highly cross-disciplinary and the close links between the atmosphere, ocean and ice at high latitudes are stressed. The volume will be invaluable for researchers and advanced students in polar science, climatology, global change, meteorology, oceanography and glaciology.

Description / Table of Contents: The magnetic field of the Earth varies in space and time. Geomagnetism as research area that aims to describe and understand the sources of these variations is supported by two pillars: first, regular high-precision measurements in the global network of magnetic observatories and repeat stations are necessary to register the field and its variations at all. Second, mathematical methods are required in order to extract magnetic field models from this large data set. Methods applied to data offer insights in the mechanisms generating the magnetic field. This thesis covers both subjects. In a first part, following the description of the state of the art in observatory instrumentation, I explain in detail two instruments that have the potential to streamline the classical procedures: The Geomagnetic AUtomated SyStem GAUSS paves the way to automated absolute measurements, up to now only possible manually. The newly developed DI3 technique improves and simplies the standard manual measurements signicantly and thus reduces the requirements placed on observers. The second part deals with the mathematical tools available for geomagnetic field modelling. I focus on harmonic splines that can be derived from the classical approach of spherical harmonics. These base functions are interpolatory and have a localised shape while satisfying Laplaces equation. Hence, they are applicable to fit data regionally or globally. The harmonic splines are used with a data set made of repeat station and observatory measurements from Southern Africa. This region is of special interest because the field intensity is very low and and both spatial and temporal field gradients exist. Subdivided into an analysis of ancient (years 1961-2001) and recent (2005-2009) data, two continuous regional field models SAMS and X-SAMS are derived. From the analysis of the field models, a better understanding of the field behaviour is gained. Finally, the harmonic splines are used in a case study on globally distributed secular variation data. Rotating the data set in a system of coordinates aligned with the dipole axis and modelling it with the harmonic splines reveals the external origin of observed fast variations.

Description / Table of Contents: The inner magnetosphere plasma is a very unique composition of different plasma particles and waves. It covers a huge energy plasma range with spatial and time variations of many orders of magnitude. In such a situation, the kinetic approach is the key element, and the starting point of the theoretical description of this plasma phenomena which requires a dedicated book to this particular area of research. Focusing on the kinetic description of the inner magnetospheric plasma, this volume illustrates how to determine the best approach to any upper atmospheric or space physics problem. Readers will find a full theoretical description of the inner magnetospheric plasma.

Description / Table of Contents: Human impact on our environment is not a new phenomenon. For millennia, humans have been coping with or provoking environmental change. We have exploited, extracted, over-used, but also in many cases nurtured, the resources that the geosphere offers. Geoarchaeology studies the traces of human interactions with the geosphere and provides the key to recognizing landscape and environmental change, human impacts and the effects of environmental change on human societies. This collection of papers from around the world includes case studies and broader reviews covering the time period since before modern human beings came into existence up until the present day. To understand ourselves, we need to understand that our world is constantly changing, and that change is dynamic and complex. Geoarchaeology provides an inclusive and long-term view of humangeosphere interactions and serves as a valuable aid to those who try to determine sustainable policies for the future.

Description / Table of Contents: Der zentralasiatische Raum liegt im Schnittpunkt strategischer Interessen von Russland, China und USA.

Description / Table of Contents: Professor Richard (Rick) Sibson revolutionized structural geology by illustrating that fault rocks contain an integrated record of earthquakes. Fault-rock textures develop in response to geological and physical variables such as composition, environmental conditions (e.g. temperature and pressure), fluid presence and strain rate. These parameters also determine the rate- and state-variable frictional stability of a fault, the dominant mineral deformation mechanism and shear strength, and ultimately control the partitioning between seismic and aseismic deformation. This volume contains a collection of papers that address the geological record of earthquake faulting from field-based or theoretical perspectives. The papers cover observations in active fault zones, the relationships between fault rocks and fault-slip styles, interpretation of fault-rock textures from the base of the seismogenic zone, consideration of the effects of fluids on faulting, discussion of fault reactivation v. initiation, and a review of future directions in geological earthquake research by Professor Sibson.

Description / Table of Contents: Die erste Auflage dieses Fachbuchs gliedert sich in drei Hauptkapitel: Grundlagen, Design, Auswahl und Montage sowie Anwendungen.

Description / Table of Contents: An essential guide to a librarianship based not on books and artifacts but on knowledge and learning. Libraries have existed for millennia, but today the library field is searching for solid footing in an increasingly fragmented (and increasingly digital) information environment. What is librarianship when it is unmoored from cataloging, books, buildings, and committees? In The Atlas of New Librarianship, R. David Lankes offers a guide to this new landscape for practitioners. He describes a new librarianship based not on books and artifacts but on knowledge and learning; and he suggests a new mission for librarians: to improve society through facilitating knowledge creation in their communities. The vision for a new librarianship must go beyond finding library-related uses for information technology and the Internet; it must provide a durable foundation for the field. Lankes recasts librarianship and library practice using the fundamental concept that knowledge is created though conversation. New librarians approach their work as facilitators of conversation; they seek to enrich, capture, store, and disseminate the conversations of their communities. To help librarians navigate this new terrain, Lankes offers a map, a visual representation of the field that can guide explorations of it; more than 140 Agreements, statements about librarianship that range from relevant theories to examples of practice; and Threads, arrangements of Agreements to explain key ideas, covering such topics as conceptual foundations and skills and values. Agreement Supplements at the end of the book offer expanded discussions. Although it touches on theory as well as practice, the Atlas is meant to be a tool: textbook, conversation guide, platform for social networking, and call to action.
