Beschreibung: Species of Diaporthe (syn. Phomopsis) are important endophytes, saprobes and pathogens, infecting a wide range of plants and resulting in important crop diseases. However, the species occurring on pear remain largely unresolved. In this study, a total of 453 Diaporthe isolates were obtained from branches of Pyrus plants (including P. bretschneideri, P. communis, P. pyrifolia and P. ussuriensis collected from 12 provinces in China) showing shoot canker symptoms. Phylogenetic analyses based on five loci (ITS, TEF, CAL, HIS, and TUB) coupled with morphology of 113 representative isolates revealed that 19 Diaporthe species were isolated, representing 13 known species (including D. caryae, D. cercidis, D. citrichinensis, D. eres, D. fusicola, D. ganjae, D. hongkongensis, D. padina, D. pescicola, D. sojae, D. taoicola, D. unshiuensis and D. velutina) and six new species described here as D. acuta, D. chongqingensis, D. fulvicolor, D. parvae, D. spinosa and D. zaobaisu. Although Koch’s postulates confirmed all species to be pathogenic, a high degree of variation in aggressiveness was observed. Moreover, these species have a high diversity, plasticity, and prevalence related to the geographical location and pear species involved.

Beschreibung: During expedition EMB201 in the Baltic Sea we investigated the local producers of glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGT) and their thriving depth by a combined 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing/ CARD-FISH and lipidomic approach. Water samples were taken in December 2018 by a pump-CTD, a giant water sampler and with Niskin bottles at the surface, suboxic and sulfidic zones of the Landsort Deep, Fårö Basin and East Gotland Basin. This data set contains the CARD-FISH and lipidomics data, while the 16S rRNA gene sequencing data is available on ENA. Cell abundance was analysed in an aliquot of 40 ml filtered (pore size 0.22 micro m) sea water fixed with particle-free formaldehyde. Archaeal cells on the filters were specifically hybridized via catalysed reporter deposition-fluorescence in situ hybridization (CARD-FISH) using the Cren537 probe. Cells on the hybridized filter were counter-stained with 40,6-diamidin-2-phenylindol (DAPI). For lipid analysis, 150–600 L sea water were filtered with a flow rate of 1.5 L min-1 on pre-ashed, 142-mm-diameter, 0.7µm pore size glass fibre GF/F filters, and frozen at –20 °C. The filters were lyophilized before different extraction methods were used to obtain intact and core GDGTs by ultra-sonification in different solvent mixtures. The combined supernatants were phase separated before analysis by high performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS2) for intact polar lipids and by high performance liquid chromatography coupled to atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry (HPLC APCI-MS; ThermoScientific) for core GDGTs.

Beschreibung: The genus Ulva, described as a good source of antioxidants known for its antibacterial properties and associated with the capacity to adapt to different environments and high growth rates has justified the increasing interest in its large-scale production. While extensive research has been done on optimizing the extraction of Ulva's bioactive compounds, few studies were conducted on increasing or optimizing antioxidant activity of Ulva spp. during cultivation. Our study aimed to investigate an energy-saving cultivation method for optimizing Ulva lacinulata by testing the impact of light dose and light intensity on its antioxidant activity. Two geographically different strains (NE-Atlantic and Mediterranean) were observed for 5 days under two light intensities (70 or 185 µmol photons m-2 s-1) with the same light dose (4 mol photons m-2 d-1). Samples were collected at different times to evaluate the photosynthetic performance (using a Pulse Amplitude Modulated fluorometer). A strain-dependent response was observed between the NE-Atlantic strain and the Mediterranean strain, suggesting that light dose may significantly affect antioxidant activity in certain Ulva spp.

Beschreibung: Despite the importance of surface energy budgets (SEBs) for land-climate interactions in the Arctic, uncertainties in their prediction persist. In situ observational data of SEB components - useful for research and model validation - are collected at relatively few sites across the terrestrial Arctic, and not all available datasets are readily interoperable. Furthermore, the terrestrial Arctic consists of a diversity of vegetation types, which are generally not well represented in land surface schemes of current Earth system models. This dataset describes the environmental conditions for 64 tundra and glacier sites (〉=60°N latitude) across the Arctic, for which in situ measurements of surface energy budget components were harmonized (see Oehri et al. 2022). These environmental conditions are (proxies of) potential drivers of SEB-components and could therefore be called SEB-drivers. The associated environmental conditions, include the vegetation types graminoid tundra, prostrate dwarf-shrub tundra, erect-shrub tundra, wetland complexes, barren complexes (≤ 40% horizontal plant cover), boreal peat bogs and glacier. These land surface types (apart from boreal peat bogs) correspond to the main classification units of the Circumpolar Arctic Vegetation Map (CAVM, Raynolds et al. 2019). For each site, additional climatic and biophysical variables are available, including cloud cover, snow cover duration, permafrost characteristics, climatic conditions and topographic conditions.

Beschreibung: The ²³⁴Th-²³⁸U radioactive pair has been extensively used to evaluate the efficiency with which photosyntetically fixed carbon is exported from the surface ocean by means of the biological pump since the 90's. The seminal work of Buesseler et al. (1992) proposed that particulate organic carbon (POC) flux can be indirectly calculated from ²³⁴Th distributions if the ratio of POC to ²³⁴Th measured on sinking particles (POC:²³⁴Th) at the desired export depth is known. Since then, a huge amount of ²³⁴Th depth profiles have been collected using a variety of sampling instruments and strategies that have changed along years. This is a global oceanic compilation of ²³⁴Th measurements, that collects results from innumerable researchers and laboratories over a period exceeding 50 years. The present compilation is made of a total 223 datasets: 214 from studies published either in articles in referred journals, PhD thesis or repositories, and 9 unpublished datasets. Including measurements from JGOFS, VERTIGO and GEOTRACES programs, with sampling from approximately 5000 locations spanning all the oceans. The compilation includes total ²³⁴Th profiles, dissolved and particulate ²³⁴Th concentrations, and POC:²³⁴Th ratios (both from pumps and sediment traps) for two sizes classes (1-53 μm and 〈 53 μm) when available. Appropriate metadata have been included, including geographic location, date, and sample depth, among others. When available, we also include water temperature, salinity, ²³⁸U data and particulate organic nitrogen data. Data sources and methods information (including ²³⁸U and ²³⁴Th) are also detailed along with valuable information for future data analysis such as bloom stage and steady/non-steady state conditions at the sampling moment. This undertaking is a treasure of data to understand and quantify how oceanic carbon cycle functions and how it will change in future. The compilation can be downloaded in three different ways: 1) A single merged file including all the individual excel files. This option can be accessed under "Other version: More than 50 years of Th-234 data: a comprehensive global oceanic compilation (single xlsx file)". 2) A summary table that includes details from cruise, sampling dates, techniques applied, authors and DOI of the compiled ²³⁴Th data, among others, each line corresponds to a specific dataset. The table can be accessed by clicking ""View dataset as HTML" and downloaded in "Download dataset as tab-delimited text". 3) Individual Excel files for each dataset can be manually chosen from the summary table, corresponding to the complete ²³⁴Th dataset and metadata from a specific publication or program. This option is available by clicking "View dataset as HTML". Furthermore, all files referred to can be downloaded in one go as ZIP or TAR.

Beschreibung: Curcuma stahlianthoides, a new species of Curcuma subg. Hitcheniopsis (Zingiberaceae: Zingiberoideae) from northeastern Thailand is described and illustrated here. The flower morphology of C. stahlianthoides resembles several other species formerly classified in the genus Stahlianthus, but the inflorescences are composed of up to 11 plain green fertile bracts, conforming to the typical inflorescence structure in the genus Curcuma. This combination of characters is similar to C. leonidii from Vietnam, to which it is compared for the diagnostic purposes. Previous molecular results indicate that Stahlianthus should be merged with Curcuma subg. Hitcheniopsis and C. stahlianthoides is the second species providing morphological justification to do so. A detailed description based on living flowering material, colour plates including the flower dissection, and notes on distribution, habitat and phenology are also provided. The status of Vulnerable is proposed for this species based on the IUCN guidelines and criteria. Observations on ant-aided seed dispersal of this species are reported and discussed within present knowledge of myrmecochory in gingers.
