    Description: The main goal of this study is to deepen the understanding of coupled processes in the subsurface of Berlin, capital city of Germany. The study area is located in the North-east German Basin, which displays a sedimentary infill of several kilometers. These sediments are composed of a sequence of alternating aquifers and aquitards, which include the local Oligocene Rupelian aquitard. This unit is characterized by a comparatively low hydraulic conductivity, thus separating the overlying fresh water aquifers, from whom Berlin produces 100% of its drinking water, from the underlying saline aquifers. In this context, newly available hydraulic data were integrated into 3D thermohydraulic models of the sub-surface, specifically investigating the coupling of surface water bodies to the subsurface. These models also serve as a basis for future thermohaline simulations as there is evidence of highly mineralized waters in the subsurface which indicates the vulnerability of shallow groundwater utilization beneath the city. The resulting thermal and hydraulic configuration shows, that the coupling of surface water bodies and groundwater might lead to significant modifications of predicted subsurface temperatures and fluid velocities. These modifications are most drastic in areas where the hydraulic head of surface water bodies is highly different compared to the sur-rounding aquifer. Consequently, differences in the predicted groundwater flow field also result in differences in predicted temperatures because of advective heat transport. In this context, the presence of major lakes might account for temperature differences up to 5°C and major rivers in the model area lead to temperature differences on the order of 1°C.

    Description: The Eifel is the youngest volcanic area of Central Europe. The last eruption occurred approximately 11000 years ago. Little is known about the deep origin and the mechanism responsible for the Eifel volcanic activity. Earthquake activity indicates that the Eifel is one of the most geodynamically active areas of Central Europe. In this work the receiver function method is used to investigate the upper mantle structure beneath the Eifel. Data from 96 teleseismic events (mb 〉 5.2) that were recorded by both permanent stations and a temporary network of 33 broadband and 129 short period stations had been analyzed. The temporary network was operating from November 1997 till June 1998 and covered an area of approximately 400x250 km^2 centered on the Eifel volcanic fields. The receiver function analysis reveals a clear image of the Moho and the mantle discontinuities at 410 km and 660 km depth. Average Moho depth is approximately 30 km and it shows little variation over the extent of the network. The observed variations of converted waveforms are possibly caused by lateral variations in crustal structure, which could not resolved by it receiver functions}. Inversions of data and migrated it receiver functions} from stations of the central Eifel array suggest that a low velocity zone is present at about 60 to 90 km depth in the western Eifel region. There are also indications for a high velocity zone around 200 km depth, perhaps caused by dehydration of the rising plume material. The results suggest that P-to-S conversions from the 410-km discontinuity arrive later than in the IASP91 reference model. The migrated data show a depression of the 410 km discontinuity of about 20 km, which correspond to an increase of temperature of about 140° Celsius. The 660 km discontinuity seems to be unaffected. This indicates that no mantel material rises up from directly below the 660 km discontinuity in the Eifel region or the Eifel-Plume has its origin within the transition zone.

    Description: The interior of the Earth is the least accessible region in our environment. Elastic waves, generated by large earthquakes, are used to explore the interior of the Earth. The globally recorded seismic signals must be inverted with mathematical techniques into models of the Earth. The reflectivity method, developed about fifty years ago for a one dimensional Earth model, is still one of the most successful techniques for modeling waveforms. The big advantage of this method is that it provides the complete response of the medium. It is not uncommon that new seismic signals are first discovered in theoretical seismograms before they are found in the observed data. Global seismology is primarily an observational science. It was founded by Ernst von Rebeur-Paschwitz in 1889 with the announcement in the journal “Nature” of the successful recording at the Royal Prussian Observatories in Potsdam of an earthquake that occurred in Japan. The installation of seismic stations and collection of data is still the primary task in Seismology. The GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences and other international institutions are installing increasing numbers of seismic stations primarily for monitoring the global seismicity but also to study the dynamics of the Earth’s interior. With the increasing amount of data, it becomes clear that three dimensional models of the Earth’s interior are required to fit the data and that we might have a chance to identify the ongoing dynamics of the Earth in much greater detail. This requires new mathematical modeling and wave form inversion techniques for three dimensional Earth models, which are now the frontiers of computational seismology.

    Description: Seismology is often associated with the investigation of earthquake processes and indeed this is a very important target of the science. However, seismology is also the primary means by which we can obtain images of the internal structure of the Earth on all scales, ranging from the deep interior, i.e. the Earth’s core and lower mantle over the mantle lithosphere and crust, the scale at which plate tectonics ‘happens’ all the way to the unconsolidated material in the near-surface. Seismology uses earthquakes and artificial sources as signal generators but also the ambient background wavefield, previously considered to be merely noise. Methodological and instrumental innovations have allowed ever more detailed investigations of the earthquake process and the seismic structure, and opened up new targets such as as the monitoring of geomorphological events and investigations of the time-dependency of seismic structure. Finally seismology is not restricted to waveform analysis and the instrumental period but draws on historical data and, in the field of paleoseismology, geological markers to constrain seismic activity in the pre-instrumental past. Direct societal benefits from seismology accrue for example from improved seismic hazard estimates and early-warning technologies in the area of natural hazards, from improved recovery and usage of natural resources, including geothermal energy as a sustainable energy source and much more, e.g. the possibility to monitor and thus enforce compliance with the nuclear test ban treaty.

Abgerundet wurde die Veranstaltung mit einem Dokumentarfilm seiner Söhne über den Astronomen Ernst von Rebeur-Paschwitz (RP), der 1889 auf dem Telegrafenberg als erster ein Fernbeben bei Japan aufzeichnete und als einer der Begründer der modernen Seismologie gilt.

    Description:    Horizontal pendulum development was paramount in the birth of modern instrumental seismology and solid-earth tide study. This paper presents a revised history starting in the first part of the nineteenth century and culminating with Rebeur-Paschwitz’s masterpiece in its latter part. The first stage began with the invention of the horizontal pendulum by Lorenz Hengler in 1832. He was followed by several, mostly independent, inventors during the three decades from the 1850s to the 1870s, in particular Friedrich Zöllner in 1869–1872 who popularized this instrument. With the exception of an instrument designed by Alexander Gerard in 1851, all these preliminary pendulums were suspended with two wires. Slightly different forms of horizontal pendulums were invented in Japan by James Ewing and Thomas Gray in the early 1880s, based on bracket or conical suspensions. The merit of demonstrating the outstanding potential of high-sensitivity horizontal pendulums completely relies on the work of Ernst von Rebeur-Paschwitz between 1886 and 1895. He successively developed three models of pendulums, in collaboration with three different manufacturers: the Fecker pendulum in 1886, the Repsold pendulum in 1888, from which six copies were produced, and finally, the Stückrath two-component model in 1894, built in three copies. Based on the scrutiny of a large number of previously unexploited archives, the detailed chronology of Rebeur-Paschwitz’s achievements is presented. Archive, and in situ explorations allowed us to discover five out of the six original copies of the first Rebeur-Paschwitz’s Repsold pendulum previously unknown or thought to be lost.     Description: The AlpArray experiment and the deployment of Swath-D together with the dense permanent network in Italy allow for detailed imaging of the spatio-temporal imaging complexity of seismic wave-fields within the greater Alpine region. The distance of any point within the area to the nearest station is less than 30 km, resulting in an average inter-station distance of about 45 km. With a much denser deployment in a smaller region of the Alps (320 km in length and 140 km wide), the Swath-D network possesses an average inter-station distance of about 15 km. We show that seismogram sections with a spatial sampling of less than 5 km can be obtained using recordings of these regional arrays for just a single event. Multiply reflected body waves can be observed for up to 2 h after source time. In addition, we provide and describe animations of long-period seismic wave-fields using recordings of about 1300–1600 broadband stations for six representative earthquakes. These illustrate the considerable spatio-temporal variability of the wave-field’s properties at a high lateral resolution. Within denser station distributions like those provided by Swath-D, even shorter period body and surface wave features can be recovered. The decrease of the horizontal wavelength from P to S to surface waves, deviations from spherically symmetric wavefronts, and the capability to detect multi-orbit arrivals are demonstrated qualitatively by the presented wave-field animations, which are a valuable tool for educational, quality control, and research purposes. We note that the information content of the acquired datasets can only be adequately explored by application of appropriate quantitative methods accounting for the considerable complexity of the seismic wave-fields as revealed by the now available station configuration.

    Description: A series of large-magnitude earthquakes above 6.9 occurred in the northern Tien-Shan between 1885 and 1911. The Chilik earthquake of 11 July 1889, has been listed with a magnitude of 8.3, based on sparse macroseismic intensities, constrained by reported damage. Despite the existence of several juvenile fault scarps in the epicentral region, that are possibly associated with the 1889 earthquake, no through-going surface rupture having the dimensions expected for a magnitude 8.3 earthquake has been located – a puzzling dilemma. Could the magnitude have been overestimated? This would have major implications not only for the understanding of the earthquake series, but also for regional hazard estimates. Fortunately, a fragmentary record from an early RebeurPaschwitz seismometer exists for the Chilik event, recorded in Wilhelmshaven (Germany). To constrain the magnitude, we compare the late coda waves of this record with those of recent events from Central Asia, recorded on modern instruments in Germany and filtered with RebeurPaschwitz instrument characteristics. Additional constraints come from disturbances of historic magnetograms that exist from the Chilik and the 1911 Chon-Kemin earthquakes. Scaling of these historic records confirm a magnitude of about 8 for the 1889 Chilik earthquake, pointing towards a lower crustal contribution to the fault area.

    Description: The aim of this research is to analyze the variations of the shallow thermal field across two volcanic continental passive margins contrasting in the breakup age; the Southwest (SW) African margin and the Norwegian margin. The SW African passive margin is significantly (around 75 Ma) older than the Norwegian. By comparing these two differently aged passive volcanic margins, we test the hypothesis if the present-day thermal field is different for the two settings. In this regard, we consider two previously published 3D lithospheric-scale and conductive thermal models for the SW African and the Norwegian passive margins. To compare these thermal models, we respect the surface of the upper thermal boundary as a reference surface for the both models and subsequently extract the temperature-depth distribution in a certain depth (1 km) interval down to 6 km below the upper thermal boundary surface. Finally, we calculate the geothermal gradient for the two settings at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 km below the surface of the upper thermal boundary. We interpret the geothermal gradient variations concerning the 3D geological structural models to show how radiogenic heat production, sediment thermal blanketing, and the Lithosphere-Asthenosphere Boundary (LAB) depth play the major roles in the shallow thermal field pattern. Our results indicate that the shallow thermal field con-siderably differs comparing the two margins. In the Nor-wegian margin, the thermal field is mostly dominated by the lithosphere age. In contrast, over the SW African passive margin, the crustal configuration is dominating the pattern of the equilibrated shallow thermal field.

    Description: The Ms ∼ 7.7 Sarez-Pamir earthquake of 1911 February 18 is the largest instrumentally recorded earthquake in the Pamir region. It triggered one of the largest landslides of the past century, building a giant natural dam and forming Lake Sarez. As for many strong earthquakes from that time, information about source parameters of the Sarez-Pamir earthquake is limited due to the sparse observations. Here, we present the analysis of analogue seismic records of the Sarez-Pamir earthquake. We have collected, scanned and digitized 26 seismic records from 13 stations worldwide to relocate the epicentre and determine the event's depth (∼26 km) and magnitude (mB7.3 and Ms7.7). The unusually good quality of the digitized waveforms allowed their modelling, revealing an NE-striking sinistral strike-slip focal mechanism in accordance with regional tectonics. The shallow depth and magnitude (Mw7.3) of the earthquake were confirmed. Additionally, we investigated the possible contribution of the landslide to the waveforms and present an alternative source model assuming the landslide and earthquake occurred in close sequence.

    Description: The Upper Rhine Graben (URG) has a large socioeconomic relevance as it provides a great potential for geothermal energy production in Germany and France. For the utilisation of this energy resource it is crucial to understand the structure and the observed temperature anomalies in the rift basin. In the framework of the EU-funded “IMAGE” project (Integrated Methods for Advanced Geothermal Exploration, grant agreement no. 608553), we apply a data-driven numerical modelling approach to quantify the processes and properties controlling the spatial distribution of subsurface temperatures. Typically, reservoir-scale numerical models are developed for predictions on the subsurface hydrothermal conditions and for reducing the risk of drilling non-productive geothermal wells. One major problem related to such models is setting appropriate boundary conditions that define, for instance, how much heat enters the reservoir from greater depths. Therefore, we first build a regional lithospheric-scale 3D structural model, which covers not only the entire URG but also adjacent geological features like the Black Forest and the Vosges Mountains. In particular, we use a multidisciplinary dataset (e.g. well data, seismic reflection data, existing structural models, gravity) to construct the geometries of the sediments, the crust and the lithospheric mantle that control the spatial distribution of thermal conductivity, radiogenic heat production, permeability, and hence temperatures in the URG. By applying a data-based and lithology-dependent para-meterisation of this lithospheric-scale 3D structural model and a 3D finite element method, we calculated in a first step the steady-state conductive thermal field for the entire region. Available measured temperatures (down to depths of 5 km) were used to validate this physics-based 3D thermal model, but also 137 revealed heat trans-port by hydrothermal convection. In a second step we performed numerical simulations of coupled fluid and heat transport on a smaller-scale and higher resolved model, for which the lithospheric-scale model provides the thermal boundary conditions. We show that the Variscan upper crustal domains with their different radiogenic heat production controls the regional thermal field. Highest temperatures are predicted for the URG, where a thermal blanketing effect due to thick thermally low-conductive sediments is locally modified by additional fluid flow.

    Description: Following the long tradition in broadband seismology in Germany, the GedForschungsZentrum (GFZ) at Potsdam, an institution for interdisciplinary research in geosciences, founded in 1992 by the Federal Ministry of Research and Technology, has started a program for the establishment of a network of globally distributed broadband seismic stations. The program, called GEOFON (GEOFOrschungsNetz), is dedicated to Emst von Rebeur-Paschwitz who recorded the first teleseismic seismogram, 1889 in Potsdam and proposed a global seismograph network and an earthquake reporting system. Our program will, after its completion, consist of three parts: a permanent network of about 30 stations, a portable broadband network and a comprehensive data archive. It is planned for two three-year periods (1993-1995 and 1996-1998). The funding for the first period has already been provided almost completely. An Advisory Board with members from German Universities and the GFZ guides the operation of GEOFON. The main task of the program is to serve the seismological community with high quality broadband data for all kinds, of scientific tasks. The research projects at the GFZ itself, to be carried out with GEOFON and other broadband data, are presently dealing mainly with lithospheric and upper and lower mantle 3D structure.

    Description: The GEOFON program consists of a global seismic network, a seismological data center, and a global earthquake monitoring system. The seismic network has regional focus in Europe and North Africa as well as throughout the Indian Ocean, but it operates stations on all continents, including Greenland on the North American continental plate and Antarctica. The data center provides real‐time seismic data through the SeedLink protocol and historical data from its large archive that currently comprises 120 TB of temporary and permanent seismic network data from GeoForschungsZentrums and third‐party partners made available via standard services as part of the European Integrated Data Archive and within the International Federation of Digital Seismograph Networks. GEOFON also provides global and rapid earthquake information. The rapid earthquake information service prioritizes fast information dissemination globally after moderate and large earthquakes based on automatic processing. Most operations are carried out using the SeisComP system. GEOFON distributes findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable data, services, products, and software free of charge, and it is used worldwide by hundreds of users and other data centers.

    Description: 2023 marks thirty years since the start of GEOFON operations with the first three stations in Papua New Guinea (Port Moresby, PMG), the Czech Republic (Moravsky Beroun, MORC), in Ireland (Dublin, DSB). The GEOFON program started shortly after creation of the GFZ German Research Centre for the Geosciences in 1992 with the aim to promote global seismic monitoring, standardisation and data exchange. The program has evolved over the three decades in synergy with the seismological community through three important milestones: since late 1990s the development and community adoption of the SeedLink protocol enabling global real-time data exchange; in early 2000s, development of the Arclink protocol as key development to interconnect the EIDA federated data archives, only recently superseded by the use of FDSN web services at global scale; 2008 as the first public release of SeisComP, one of the most widely used seismological packages in seismology, a development triggered after the 2004 Aceh-Andaman earthquake and tsunami within the GITEWS project (German Indian Ocean Tsunami Early Warning System). Although GEOFON‘s heritage goes back to the 1990s and further down to 1889 building on the initial findings from Ernst von Rebeur-Paschwitz, the program is capable of leveraging third party funded challenging projects to keep modernising with the community. In this presentation we outline the most important developments of GEOFON through a journey in time over three decades, building links between current activities and vision still influenced by the initial aims which have shaped the current GEOFON mission.

    Description: Significant scientific findings are often directly related to innovations in measurement technology. For investigating the Earth’s interior the invention of the seismography played the most important role. Starting with the first seismograph suitable for scientific investigations by Ewing, Gray and Milne in the 1870s and its improvement by Wiechert around 1900, seismic instrumentation was available in the beginning of the last century to reveal the layered structure of our planet. Since then, instruments were steadily improved, and controlled source experiments and seismic networks significantly contribute today to our understanding of the Earth’s structure and the ongoing dynamic processes as well as to the exploration of resources as oil, gas, water and minerals. At the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences we work on technical innovations and apply them in experiments around the world and at a variety of scales. We develop highly portable, low-cost, high-performance seismic data recording systems, which are designed to be used in “large-N” array configurations (〉1000 receivers) and on the sea floor (shallow water). Distributed accoustic sensors (DAS) based on fibre-optic cables allow extremely dense sampling of the seismic wavefields. Seismic sources and receivers integrated in borehole tools illuminate in high-resolution the subsurface during drilling operations (Seismic prediction while drilling, SPWD).
