In order to provide insights into how various page views are influenced by public engagement with weather information and to shed light on the patterns of warning issuance across different seasons and regions, this study analyzes the multi-dimensional characteristics of city weather forecast page views and the spatiotemporal characteristics of early warning information in China, from 1 March 2020 to 31 August 2023. This is achieved by utilizing the daily page views of city weather forecasts and meteorological warning data, comparing the public’s attention to weather during holidays versus regular days, assessing the public’s attention to weather under different meteorological warning levels, and performing statistical analysis of the spatiotemporal scale of meteorological disasters. Our analysis shows that compared to weekends and holidays, the public pays more attention to the weather on weekdays, and the difference between weekdays and national statutory holidays is more significant. Due to the widespread impact of heat waves, typhoons, severe convective weather, and geological disasters caused by heavy rainfall, public awareness and participation in flood season weather forecasting have significantly increased. Under red alerts, flash floods, typhoons, and geological risks are the primary concerns. Orange alerts predominantly feature flash floods, rainstorms, typhoons, snowstorms, and cold waves, while sandstorms attract the most attention during yellow alerts. Droughts, however, receive relatively less attention regardless of the warning level. Seasonal patterns in the issuance of meteorological warnings reveal a peak in summer, particularly with typhoons and rainstorms being the main concerns in July, followed by high temperatures and additional typhoon warnings in August. Heavy sea surface wind warnings exhibit a strong seasonal trend, with the majority issued during the winter months. Regionally, southern China experiences the highest frequency of severe convection weather warnings, with provinces such as Jiangxi, Guangxi, and Hunan being the most affected. Full article

An efficient treatment plan using a temporary anchorage device should be built following the principle of reducing the number of tads to obtain a multiple biomechanical advantage. The following case report concerns the Biga system, a strategy that supports orthodontists during class II corrections and vertical control through treatment. A 12-year-old girl with a high angle of skeletal class II was selected. A novel biomechanical strategy was effectively applied using two tads on the upper arch to obtain sequential distalization of the upper teeth and to correct the lower arch spee curve using third-class elastics. Eventually, on the same tads, a double cantilever was applied to control the overbite and intrusion during incisors’ retraction. The Biga system is an easy biomechanical strategy that ensures the three-dimensional control of treatment mechanics in class II patients. Full article

The traditional method of allocating passenger seats based on compartments does not effectively manage an aircraft’s center of gravity (CG), resulting in a notable divergence from the desired target CG (TCG). In this work, the Boeing B737-800 aircraft was employed as a case study, and row-based and compartment-based integer programming models for passenger allocation were examined and constructed with the aim of addressing the current situation. The accuracy of CG control was evaluated by comparing the row-based and compartment-based allocation techniques, taking into account different bodyweights and numbers of passengers. The key contribution of this research is to broaden the range of the mobilizable set for the aviation weight and balance (AWB) model, resulting in a significant reduction in the range of deviations in the center of gravity outcomes by a factor of around 6 to 16. The effectiveness of the row-based allocation approach and the impact of passenger weight randomness on the deviation of an airplane’s CG were also investigated in this study. The Monte Carlo method was utilized to quantify the uncertainty associated with passenger weight, resulting in the generation of the posterior distribution of the aircraft’s center of gravity (CG) deviation. The outcome of the row-based model test is the determination of the range of passenger numbers that can be effectively allocated under different TCG conditions. Full article

Gearboxes operate in challenging environments, which leads to a heightened incidence of failures, and ambient noise further compromises the accuracy of fault diagnosis. To address this issue, we introduce a fault diagnosis method that employs singular value decomposition (SVD) and graph Fourier transform (GFT). Singular values, commonly employed in feature extraction and fault diagnosis, effectively encapsulate various fault states of mechanical equipment. However, prior methods neglect the inter-relationships among singular values, resulting in the loss of subtle fault information concealed within. To precisely and effectively extract subtle fault information from gear vibration signals, this study incorporates graph signal processing (GSP) technology. Following SVD of the original vibration signal, the method constructs a graph signal using singular values as inputs, enabling the capture of topological relationships among these values and the extraction of concealed fault information. Subsequently, the graph signal undergoes a transformation via GFT, facilitating the extraction of fault features from the graph spectral domain. Ultimately, by assessing the Mahalanobis distance between training and testing samples, distinct defect states are discerned and diagnosed. Experimental results on bearing and gear faults demonstrate that the proposed method exhibits enhanced robustness to noise, enabling accurate and effective diagnosis of gearbox faults in environments with substantial noise. Sleep disorders (SD) in children is a topic of great relevance due to their impact on a child’s general health. This has led us to study their prevalence and the factors that disturb them in the developing population. Using a validated Likert-type questionnaire, different behaviors observed by the parents during the different phases of their children’s sleep were evaluated during the last 6 months. A total of 206 children between the ages of 7 and 17 who attended a dental office participated in the study. The prevalence of SD was 47.6%. There were no significant differences regarding the SD in relation to sex (p = 0.796). The mean total score for children aged 7 to 11 years old was 42.3 (±14.25) compared to 45.44 (±15.51) for the group consisting of children aged 12 to 17 years old, reporting a statistically significant difference among both age groups (p = 0.01). The most frequent disorder was related to initiating and maintaining sleep (64.9%) while the least prevalent were the respiratory sleep disorders (27.2%). Given the high prevalence of these disorders, it is necessary to intercept them during childhood and establish educational guidelines in this regard throughout primary care. Full article

In this study, oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation in honey bee larvae, pupae and the midguts of adult bees were investigated during a one-year exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMFs) at a frequency of 900 MHz under field conditions. The experiment was carried out on honey bee colonies at three locations with electric field levels of 30 mV m−1, 70 mV m−1 and 1000 mV m−1. Antioxidant enzymes, glutathione-S-transferase (GST), catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) as indicators of lipid peroxidation were measured spectrophotometrically. The GST activity within the same developmental stage showed no significant differences regardless of electric field level or sampling time. The highest GST activity was found in the pupae, followed by activity in the larvae and midguts. Both CAT activity and TBARS concentration were the highest in the midguts, regardless of field level and sampling time. The larvae showed a significantly higher TBARS concentration at the location with an electric field level of 1000 mV m−1 compared to the locations with lower levels. Our results show that RF-EMFs at a frequency of 900 MHz can cause oxidative stress in honey bees, with the larval stage being more sensitive than the pupal stage, but there was no linear relationship between electric field level and effect in any of the developmental stages. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different target distances on various leg joints in the fencing lunge (lunge). Fifteen fencers performed the lunges from three different target distances (normal, short, and long). Joint angle data in the sagittal plane of the hip, knee, and ankle of the front and rear legs were measured using a 3D motion analysis system (Miqus M3). Joint angle variables were compared between each distance using a one-way repeated-measures analysis of variance and Friedman tests (p < 0.05). The results showed significant differences in various extensions, ranges of motion, and flexion angles in the measured joints for all distances. As the distances increased, there was greater flexion of the rear knee joint early during the lunge, followed by greater extension of the rear hip and knee joints, greater plantar flexion of the rear ankle joint, and higher peak velocity of the body center of mass. Furthermore, target distance extension was suggested to significantly affect front hip and knee joint flexion during the braking phase of the lunge. This study provides insight and information valuable to coaches and fencers operating in actual competition settings. Full article

The use of composites in the aerospace industry has been increasing exponentially. However, conventional epoxy resins, derived from petroleum sources, are not sustainable, making them non-degradable and environmentally harmful. In order to foster a sustainable environment, replacing conventional thermoset epoxies with bio-sourced carbon epoxies is imperative. With the enhancement in technology, it is possible to combine vegetable oils or bio-based copolymers with resins to make it recyclable in nature. Hence, it is necessary to study bio-based epoxies and carry out material characterization and see how they behave differently from conventional epoxies. This study examines the mechanical properties of different types of epoxy resins, which includes conventional, recyclable, and non-recyclable bio-epoxies. Tensile, bending, fracture toughness, and compression tests are performed in accordance with ASTM and ISO standards. The results show that the recyclable bio-epoxy exhibits comparable or superior properties when compared with conventional and non-recyclable bio-epoxies, particularly in terms of impact resistance. Recyclable epoxy, examined in the current study, shows a 73% higher strain energy release rate as compared to conventional epoxy. These results suggest that bio-epoxies could serve as a viable alternative to conventional epoxy. Full article

Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a rare, heterogeneous B-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The standard front-line treatment utilizes chemotherapy, often followed by consolidation with an autologous hematopoietic cell transplant; however, in most patients, the lymphoma will recur and require subsequent treatments. Additionally, mantle cell lymphoma primarily affects older patients and is frequently chemotherapy-resistant, which has further fostered the necessity for new, chemotherapy-free treatment options. In the past decade, targeted therapies in mantle cell lymphoma have been practice-changing as the treatment paradigm shifts further away from relying primarily on cytotoxic agents. Here, we will review the pathophysiology of mantle cell lymphoma and discuss the emergence of targeted, chemotherapy-free treatments aimed at disrupting the abnormal biology driving its lymphomagenesis. Treatments targeting the constitutive activation of NF-kB, Bruton’s Tyrosine Kinase signaling, and anti-apoptosis will be the primary focus as we discuss their clinical data and toxicities. Our review will also focus primarily on the emergence and use of targeted therapies in the relapsed/refractory setting but will also discuss the emergence of their use in front-line therapy and in combination with other agents. The present paper introduces an innovative strain energy function (SEF) for incompressible anisotropic fiber-reinforced materials. This SEF is specifically designed to understand the mechanical behavior of carbon fiber-woven fabric. The considered model combines polyconvex invariants forming an integrity basisin polynomial form, which is inspired by the application of Noether’s theorem. A single solution can be obtained during the identification because of the relationship between the SEF we have constructed and the material parameters, which are linearly dependent. The six material parameters were precisely determined through a comparison between the closed-form solutions from our model and the corresponding tensile experimental data with different stretching ratios, with determination coefficients consistently reaching a remarkable value of 0.99. When considering only uniaxial tensile tests, our model can be simplified from a quadratic polynomial to a linear polynomial, thereby reducing the number of material parameters required from six to four, while the fidelity of the model’s predictive accuracy remains unaltered. The comparison between the results of numerical calculations and experiments proves the efficiency and accuracy of the method. Full article

Objectives: Although acute anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) is often avoided because of postoperative joint stiffness, delayed ACLR can lead to a longer recovery time and can have a negative impact on physical function due to detraining. This study aimed to determine the effects of acute ACLR on postoperative outcomes, including muscle strength, performance, and return to sports. Methods: A total of 110 patients who underwent anatomical ACLR using hamstring autografts were included in this study and were divided into three groups: acute (ACLR performed within 2 weeks after ACL injury), 2–6 weeks (ACLR performed between 2 and 6 weeks after injury), and 6–12 weeks (ACLR performed between 6 and 12 weeks after injury). Several parameters were evaluated, including range of motion, knee joint stability, isokinetic knee strength, performance, and return to sports. Results: No significant differences were found in the range of motion or knee joint stability between the groups. The acute group exhibited significantly greater quadriceps strength at 3 months postoperatively than the other groups (p < 0.05). The single-leg hop test showed that 66.7%, 38.7%, and 33.3% of the patients in the acute, 2–6 weeks, and 6–12 weeks groups, respectively, recovered to an LSI of 90% or greater (p = 0.09, Cramer’s V = 0.27). All patients in the acute group were able to return to sports (p = 0.14; Cramer’s V = 0.28). Conclusions: Acute ACLR is advantageous for the early recovery of strength and performance without adverse events. Acute ACLR may shorten the time spent away from sports activities. Full article

Background and Objectives: Brachial–ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) is an established independent risk factor for cardiovascular events, cardiovascular mortality, and all-cause mortality. Osteocalcin (OC) is recognized to be associated with vascular function. The present study assessed the correlation between serum OC levels and peripheral arterial stiffness (PAS) measured through baPWV in hypertensive patients. Materials and Methods: Fasting blood samples were collected from 120 hypertensive participants. The serum total OC levels were measured using a commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit, whereas the baPWV device was used to detect PAS. The PAS group had left or right baPWV > 18.0 m/s. Results: Among the hypertensive patients, 24 (20.0%) were classified into the PAS group. The PAS group exhibited a significantly older age (p = 0.011), higher prevalence of diabetes (p = 0.010), systolic blood pressure (p = 0.019), levels of serum fasting glucose (p = 0.003), blood urea nitrogen (p = 0.024), creatinine (p = 0.004), C-reactive protein (p = 0.007), OC (p = 0.002), and lower estimated glomerular filtration rate (p = 0.004) than the non-PAS group. Age (odds ratio [OR]: 1.076, 95% CI: 1.004–1.153, p = 0.037) and serum OC level (OR: 1.797, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.077–3.000, p = 0.025) were independent factors linked to PAS in hypertensive patients in the multivariate logistic regression analysis. Conclusions: Serum OC levels and older age are positively associated with PAS in hypertensive patients. Full article

Assessing Carbon Sequestration Potential in State-Owned Plantation Forests in China and Exploring Feasibility for Carbon Offset Projects

In the pursuit of carbon neutrality, state-owned forests are prime candidates for carbon offset projects due to their unique tenure and management characteristics. Employing methodologies endorsed by the International Panel on Climate Change and logistic growth curves, this study assesses the carbon stocks and sequestration potential of established state-owned plantation forests across 31 Chinese provinces from 2023 to 2060, encompassing seven forestry industry groups. This study projects that by 2060, these forests will amass a carbon stock of 558.25 MtC, with the highest stock in Northeast China (122.09 MtC) and the lowest in Northwest China (32.27 MtC), notably showing the highest growth rate at 91.15%. Over the forecast period, they are expected to accumulate a carbon sink of 637.07 MtCO2e, translating to an average annual carbon sink of 17.22 MtCO2e and an average annual carbon sink per unit of 1.41 tons of CO2 per hectare per year. Additionally, state-owned forests have the potential to offset approximately 0.15%–0.17% of annual carbon emissions, aligning with international climate goals. However, it is essential to note that the conversion of these carbon sinks into tradable carbon credits is subject to specific methodology requirements. Therefore, the future development of carbon offset projects in China’s state-owned forests should consider the advancement of carbon market mechanisms, including the Chinese Certified Emission Reduction and the introduction of a carbon inclusion mechanism and natural forest methodology, to fully realize their potential contributions to carbon neutrality. In summary, these findings offer valuable insights for shaping the future of carbon offset initiatives within China’s state-owned forests. Full article

Our understanding of the antiphage defense system arsenal in bacteria is rapidly expanding, but little is known about its occurrence in cold-adapted bacteria. In this study, we aim to shed light on the prevalence and distribution of antiphage defense systems in cold-adapted bacteria, with a focus on CRISPR-Cas systems. Using bioinformatics tools, Prokaryotic Antiviral Defense LOCator (PADLOC) and CRISPRCasTyper, we mapped the presence and diversity of antiphage defense systems in 938 available genomes of cold-adapted bacteria from diverse habitats. We confirmed that CRISPR-Cas systems are less frequent in cold-adapted bacteria, compared to mesophilic and thermophilic species. In contrast, several antiphage defense systems, such as dXTPases and DRTs, appear to be more frequently compared to temperate bacteria. Additionally, our study provides Cas endonuclease candidates with a potential for further development into cold-active CRISPR-Cas genome editing tools. These candidates could have broad applications in research on cold-adapted organisms. Our study provides a first-time map of antiphage defense systems in cold-adapted bacteria and a detailed overview of CRISPR-Cas diversity. Full article

Repeated transurethral bladder resections (TURBs) and instillation treatments in non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) might influence bladder function and, therefore, quality of life. Bladder-related medication is a surrogate marker of compromised bladder function. The objective was to investigate whether TURBs and adjuvant instillation therapy are associated with the use of anticholinergics, β3-agonists, and cystitis-relevant antibiotics. We divided all Danish patients diagnosed with primary NMIBC during 2002–2017 registered in the Danish National Patient Registry (DNPR) based on TURB-load within the first five years from diagnosis (1 TURB, 2–4 TURBs, ≥5 TURBs). Instillation therapy with either mitomycin C (MMC) or bacillus Calmette-Guerin vaccine (BCG) was independent exposure (yes or no). We included 17,774 patients; 76% men, median age: 70 years (IQR: 63, 77). Patients exposed to ≥5 TURBs had a higher risk of using bladder-relaxing medication than patients exposed to 1 TURB, HR = 4.01 [3.33; 4.83], and higher risk of cystitis, HR = 2.27 [2.05; 2.51]. BCG-exposed patients had a higher risk of bladder-relaxing medication use compared to non-exposed, HR = 1.92 [1.69; 2.18], and a higher risk of cystitis, HR = 1.39 [1.31; 1.48]. Repeated TURBs have the highest impact on bladder function. Adjuvant instillation therapy is also associated with the use of bladder-related medication. Full article

Inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) are a clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of diseases which cause visual loss due to Mendelian mutations in over 250 genes, making genetic diagnosis challenging and time-consuming. Here, we developed a new tool, CDIP (Cost-effective Deep-sequencing IRD Panel) in which a simultaneous sequencing of common mutations is performed. CDIP is based on simultaneous amplification of 47 amplicons harboring common mutations followed by next-generation sequencing (NGS). Following five rounds of calibration of NGS-based steps, CDIP was used in 740 IRD samples. The analysis revealed 151 mutations in 131 index cases. In 54 (7%) of these cases, CDIP identified the genetic cause of disease (the remaining were single-heterozygous recessive mutations). These include a patient that was clinically diagnosed with retinoschisis and found to be homozygous for NR2E3-c.932G>A (p.R311Q), and a patient with RP who is hemizygous for an RPGR variant, c.292C>A (p.H98N), which was not included in the analysis but is located in proximity to one of these mutations. CDIP is a cost-effective deep sequencing panel for simultaneous detection of common founder mutations. This protocol can be implemented for additional populations as well as additional inherited diseases, and mainly in populations with strong founder effects. Full article

Viability of an Open-Loop Heat Pump Drying System in South African Climatic Conditions

Drying agricultural produce consumes a considerable amount of energy. As an energy-efficient system, a heat pump can improve the energy efficiency of the drying process and hence reduce the energy consumption, especially in South Africa, where both sub-tropical and temperate weather conditions dominate. The objective of this research is to experimentally investigate the impacts of weather conditions on the operational conditions and thermal performance of an open-loop air-source heat pump drying system. The experimental investigation was conducted in a climate chamber where the climate conditions were simulated from −10 °C to 20 °C with an interval of 10 °C for the typical temperature range of the harvesting season in South Africa. The findings indicate that ambient temperatures have a significant impact on both the operating conditions and thermal performance of an open-loop heat pump system; the change in ambient temperatures from −10 °C to 20 °C leads to a 141.6% improvement in the suction pressure, a 214.2% increase in the discharge pressure, and 30.1% increase in the compression ratio, as well as a consequent increase of 130.6% in the refrigerant mass flow rate (from 0.0067 to 0.0155 kg/s), resulting in a corresponding increase in the coefficient of performance (COP) of the heat pump drying system by about 42.1%. Therefore, this study suggests that, while using an open-loop air-source heat pump drying system utilising R134a refrigerant is feasible in South Africa, it may be practically limited to regions with warm climates or during warmer seasons. Genome engineered B-cells are being developed for chronic, systemic in vivo protein replacement therapies and for localized, tumor cell-actuated anticancer therapeutics. For continuous systemic engineered protein production, expression may be driven by constitutively active promoters. For actuated payload delivery, B-cell conditional expression could be based on transgene alternate splicing or heterologous promotors activated after engineered B-cell receptor (BCR) stimulation. This study used a bioinformatics-based approach to identify putative BCR-stimulated gene promoters. Gene expression data at four timepoints (60, 90, 210, and 390 min) following in vitro BCR stimulation using an anti-IgM antibody in B-cells from six healthy donors were analyzed using R (4.2.2). Differentially upregulated genes were stringently defined as those with adjusted p-value < 0.01 and a log2FoldChange > 1.5. The most upregulated and statistically significant genes were further analyzed to find those with the lowest unstimulated B-cell expression. Of the 46 significantly upregulated genes at 390 min post-BCR stimulation, 6 had average unstimulated expression below the median unstimulated expression at 390 min for all 54,675 gene probes. This bioinformatics-based identification of 6 relatively quiescent genes at baseline that are upregulated by BCR-stimulation (“on-switch”) provides a set of promising promotors for inclusion in future transgene designs and engineered B-cell therapeutics development. The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of the Play Nicely brief intervention in diminishing both the utilization of physical punishment and the beliefs that endorse such behavior among a sample of Colombian parents with children aged 2 to 6. Utilizing a quasi-experimental design, the research included pretest and posttest evaluations and involved both an intervention group (n = 37) and a control group (n = 29). The assessment tools used were a scale to measure beliefs about the positive impacts of physical punishment and the Physical Assault subscale of the Spanish version of the Conflict Tactics Scale Parent–Child (CTSPC). Parents participated in a single online session, which offered eight interactive options and lasted 10 min. The results highlighted a high prevalence of physical punishment within the sample (81.8%) and established statistically significant correlations between the justification of physical punishment and its actual use. Approximately one month following the intervention, there was a significant reduction in the employment of physical punishment among the intervention group (p = 0.009), and a notable decrease in the belief that “Punishment is the best alternative to control children’s behavior” (p = 0.010) was observed. Consequently, the Play Nicely intervention proved effective in curtailing the use of physical punishment among parents of young children, demonstrating both efficacy and cost-effectiveness within a brief timeframe. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have successfully revealed numerous susceptibility loci for obesity. The PREDATORR study (2014) shows that in Romania, 346% of adults aged 20–79 y/o are overweight, and 31.4% are obese with a high risk of cardiometabolic complications, a number that puts almost 67% of Romania’s population in the abnormal weight group. Our study aims to investigate the current status of the genetic foundation in metabolic disease associated with obesity, applied to a pilot group of patients specifically examining the impact of known polymorphisms and their haplotype of six food intake-regulating genes, namely leptin (LEP), leptin receptor (LEP-R), serotonin receptor (5HTR2A), ghrelin (GHRL), neuropeptide Y (NPY), and fat-mass and obesity-associated protein (FTO) with the following polymorphisms: LEP A-2548G, LEPR A-223G, 5HTR2A G-1439A, GHRL G-72T, NPY T-29063C, FTO A-T, and body mass index (BMI). A notable link between the LEP-2548 rs7799039 gene’s AG genotype and the risk of obesity was observed, particularly pronounced in males aged 40–49, with an approximately seven-fold increased likelihood of obesity. The 5HTR2A rs6311 AA genotype was associated with a higher BMI, which was not statistically significant. The FTO rs9939609 gene’s AA genotype emerged as a significant predictor of obesity risk. Besides these significant findings, no substantial associations were observed with the LEPR, 5HTR2A, GHRL, and NPY genes. Haplotype association analysis showed a suggestive indication of GRGMLA (rs7799039, rs1137101, rs6311, rs696217, rs16139, rs9939609 sequence) haplotype with a susceptibility effect towards obesity predisposition. Linkage disequilibrium (LD) analysis showed statistically significant associations between LEP and LEPR gene (p = 0.04), LEP and GHRL gene (p = 0.0047), and GHRL and FTO gene (p = 0.03). Our study, to the best of our knowledge, is one of the very few on the Romanian population, and aims to be a starting point for further research on the targeted interventional strategies to reduce cardiometabolic risks. Clinical Correlations between Serological Markers and Endometrial Cancer

Background: Endometrial cancer is associated with changes in blood cell counts and with high levels of inflammatory markers, thus reflecting the tumor’s impact on various biological processes and suggesting their potential as biomarkers for endometrial cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment response. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio, and monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio in peripheral blood sampled preoperatively from patients have been reported to be independently associated with the prognosis of different types of malignancies. Objectives: This study aimed to compare several blood markers—red blood cells, white blood cells, platelet parameters, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio, monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio, C-reactive protein, and fibrinogen—in patients with benign or malignant endometrial tumors. Material and methods: Our retrospective study included 670 patients (192 diagnosed with endometrial cancer and 478 with endometrial hyperplasia), and we compared the serological parameters discussed above with those sampled the day before surgery. Results: Analysis of complete blood count indices revealed no significant differences in red blood cell or total white blood cell parameters between the endometrial cancer group and the endometrial hyperplasia group. However, a distinct pattern emerged in the white blood cell differential. The endometrial cancer group showed a statistically significant decrease in lymphocyte count compared with the endometrial hyperplasia group. In contrast, the endometrial cancer group showed significantly higher mean platelet counts and increased mean platelet volume compared with controls. Furthermore, the endometrial cancer group demonstrated a marked inflammatory response, as evidenced by significantly elevated levels of C-reactive protein, fibrinogen, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio, and monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio compared with the endometrial hyperplasia group. Conclusions: The current research revealed statistically significant differences in multiple serological biomarkers between the two groups. These findings support the initial hypothesis regarding the potential utility of these biomarkers in endometrial cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment response, highlighting the existence of biomarkers affordable for analysis under any health system, regardless of the country’s level of development. Background: Oral health (OH) has evolved beyond dental concerns to encompass psychosocial dimensions and overall well-being. This study reviews OH strategies within a public health framework to identify key elements for effective OH promotion. Methods: A literature review following PRISMA guidelines identified 42 relevant articles from 62 screened. Five themes emerged: group-level, individual-level, policy-level (emphasizing devising OH policies), healthcare delivery, and communication. Common components included OH education, behaviour change, access to OH services, and policy integration. Results: Thematic analysis identified five overarching themes in oral health (OH) promotion strategies, with a focus on tailored approaches for specific populations and components such as education, access to services, interventions, and policy, emphasizing the multifaceted nature of OH promotion. Conclusion: Effective OH promotion requires a multifaceted approach and tailored strategies with interprofessional collaboration. Future research should focus on cost-effectiveness and user-friendly resources for OH professionals and policymakers. Full article

Functional Hydrogels Promote Vegetable Growth in Cadmium-Contaminated Soil

Over the years, the concentration of cadmium in soil has increased due to industrialization. Cadmium in the soil enters the human body through plant accumulation, seriously endangering human health. In the current study, two types of hydrogels were successfully synthesized using a free radical polymerization method: an ion-type hydrogel referred to as DMAPAA (N-(3-(Dimethyl amino) propyl) acrylamide)/DMAPAAQ (N,N-Dimethyl amino propyl acrylamide, methyl chloride quaternary) and a non-ion-type hydrogel known as DMAA (N,N-Dimethylacrylamide). In the experiment carried out in this study, the ion-type hydrogel DMAPAA/DMAPAAQ was introduced to cadmium-contaminated soil for vegetable cultivation. The study found that at cadmium levels of 0 and 2 mg/kg in soil, when exposed to a pH 2 solution, cadmium wasn’t detected in the filtrate using ICP. As the amount of cadmium increased to 500 mg/kg, hydrogel addition gradually reduced the filtrate cadmium concentration. Notably, the use of the 4% hydrogel resulted in 0 mg/L of cadmium. For the 0% hydrogel, vegetable cadmium absorption was determined to be 0.07 mg/g, contrasting with 0.03 mg/g for the 4% hydrogel. The DMAPAA/DMAPAAQ hydrogel significantly boosts vegetable growth by efficiently absorbing nitrate ions through ion exchange, releasing them for plant uptake. In contrast, the DMAA hydrogel, used as a control, does not enhance plant growth despite its water absorption properties. In summary, the composite hydrogel shows great potential for enhancing vegetable yield and immobilizing heavy metals in soil. Full article
