Conclusions

  1. 1.

Octamethylbiphenylene is protonated in strong acids to give the 2-H-1,2,3,4,5,6, 7,8-octamethylbiphenylenonium ion.

  2. 2.

Preliminary data were obtained that testify to the progress of the degenerate rearrangement of ion (II) via the 1,2-shift of the hydrogen atom (for the HCl-Al2Cl6-CH2Cl2 system ΔG 3 ∘ ≈ 15 kcal/mole.
