Abstract

Roger Penrose is beyond doubt the deepest and most profound critic of what he has termed the "strong AI (artificial intelligence) hypothesis". Put simply this states that the human mind is just a computer program that one day – probably within the next century – will be emulated by programs run on standard computer hardware. His best-selling book The Emperors's New Mind outlined his reasons for doubting that human consciousness could be coded in any program whatsoever, and Shadows of the Mind develops his thesis further.
