Abstract

Exposure of tissue culture cells to irradiated medium is known to induce mitotic delay, and impair growth and reproductive integrity. Studies were undertaken to elucidate the nature of radiation damage to the medium and how this damage is expressed in the effects on cells. Growth characteristics of mouse lymphoma cells (L5178Y) were used as an index of the concentration of toxic radiation products in the medium, for a range of delivered doses. The effects of various incubation times and intervals between irradiation and cell inoculation were examined. The use of radioprotectors to reduce and reverse the observed effects was studied.
