Background/Objectives: Aniridia-associated keratopathy (AAK) is a potentially vision-threatening pathology in congenital aniridia, for which both the underlying etiopathogenesis and effective treatment remain unclear. Methods:This prospective study was conducted to assess and compare the short-term outcome after superficial keratectomy (SK) alone or in a combination with an amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT). Here, 76 eyes were enrolled in 76 patients with grade 4 AAK. In all eyes, in order to assess preoperatively the efficiency of the limbal epithelial stem cells (LESC), the presence of corneal epithelial cells in confocal microscopy was established. The analyses included: best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), the stage of AAK and the number of corneal quadrants involved in corneal neovascularization (CNV). Results: Six months after surgery, the mean BCVA was 0.05 and ranged from 0.002 up to 0.1 in both groups. Improvement in BCVA occurred in 94.29% patients when *SK alone* was performed, and in 92.68% when in combination with AMT. There were no statistically significant differences in the effect of therapy depending on the type of surgery, regarding BCVA, stage of AAK and the number of quadrants with CNV. Conclusions: SK alone is an effective procedure in short outcomes limited to six months for advanced AAK in association with LESC partial efficiency. Full article

Many people with pain from osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee are either not ready for surgery or may never be surgical candidates. Genicular artery embolization (GAE) is a new proposed management for those with pain despite maximum medical management. It has historically been used to manage recurrent spontaneous haemarthrosis following total knee replacement, but newer studies are showing a positive effect in managing pre-arthroplasty knee OA. The goal of this review is to summarise current and relevant literature from searches of computerised databases and relevant journals, and analyse their results. Studies included show that GAE has promising outcomes in managing mild to moderate OA knee pain in those who have exhausted at least 3 months of conservative therapy. Most studies show improvements in VAS pain and PROM scores (including KOOS, and/or WOMAC). Minimal adverse effects have been associated in up to two years of follow up, the majority of which are self-resolving. The article précises a concise general procedural technique for performing GAE, as well as comparing and contrasting different embolic agents that may be utilised. GAE shows promising outcomes in management of mild to moderate OA knee pain. In the future, there will need to be higher volume studies to determine effectiveness, suitable candidates, and other potential adverse effects. Full article

Abstract: Background/Objectives: The most common post-acute consequences of SARS-CoV-2 include lung dysfunction, the impairment of cognitive functions and mental health, as well as the impairment of the musculoskeletal system in the form of fatigue and muscle weakness. Post-COVID-19 patients often experience impaired balance and reduced physical capacity. It is important to implement a rehabilitation program that eliminates the side effects of COVID-19 and allows for significant improvement in the patient’s functionality. The aim of our study was to assess patient functionality after a 6-week rehabilitation program on balance, foot pressure distribution, and physical capacity in post-COVID-19 patients. Methods: The clinical study group consisted of 53 people 3 months after COVID-19 infection, confirmed by a positive PCR test. Exclusion from the study included people with comorbidities that impaired balance and gait. The patients underwent a posturographic assessment—Romberg test, a baropodometric assessment—static and dynamic, and a performance assessment—a 6 min walk test determining shortness of breath on the mMRC scale, blood pressure, heart rate, and saturation. Patients participated in rehabilitation until the sixth week, after which they were assessed again. Comparisons were made using IBM SPSS Statistics 27.0 software using the Wilcoxon pairwise order test, at a significance level of p < 0.05. Results: The result of the postural control assessment showed an improvement in the ability to maintain the centre of gravity in terms of the foot support area—statistical decreases were observed in the ellipse area, from 745.28 mm2 to 453.52 mm2 (p = 0.009), as well as maximum (from 3133.5 gr/cm2 to 2994.2 gr/cm2; p = 0.065) and average load on the left foot (from 1010.1 gr/cm2 to 969.38 gr/cm2; p = 0.028). In the 6 min walk test before and after exercise, the heart rate decreased after the therapy (shortness of breath on the mMRC scale also decreased from 79.12 to 74.95). This means that patients achieved better physical fitness and efficiency. Conclusions: Rehabilitation significantly improved balance, as measured by a decrease in ellipse area during the Romberg test. Full article

Background: Adolescents’ early responses and overall outcomes during anorexia nervosa (AN) treatment may differ by patient gender, raising the question of whether evaluating clinical data during AN treatment may require different criteria. Methods: We investigated, using patient records, whether young men and young women with AN differed in terms of early treatment response (defined as weight change and variability within the first 14 days) and whether early treatment responses predicted treatment outcomes similarly across genders. Results: Weight changes predicted patient discharge weight across all gender groups. Weight variability predicted higher disordered eating psychopathology and higher body image insecurities at discharge. Gender differences emerged only for weight gain, which was more pronounced for young men, and gender modulated the effects of weight gain and variability on general psychopathology outcomes. Conclusions: The present findings suggest that early weight changes and weight variability are similarly important predictors of AN treatment outcomes in adolescents but also hint at possible gender differences in terms of the link between weight change and, respectively, variability on general psychopathology. Background: Over the past decade, the gut microbiome (GM) has progressively demonstrated to have a central role in human metabolism, immunity, and cardiometabolic risk. Likewise, sleep disorders showed an impact on individual health and cardiometabolic risk. Recent studies seem to suggest multi-directional relations among GM, diet, sleep, and cardiometabolic risk, though specific interactions are not fully elucidated. We conducted a systematic review to synthesize the currently available evidence on the potential interactions between sleep and GM and their possible implications on cardiometabolic risk. Methods: A systematic review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement for reporting systematic reviews and meta-analyses, including articles from January 2016 until November 2022. Narrative syntheses were employed to describe the results. Results: A total of 8 studies were selected according to these criteria. Our findings indicated that the sleep disorder and/or the acute circadian rhythm disturbance caused by sleep–wake shifts affected the human GM, mainly throughout microbial functionality. Conclusions: Sleep disorders should be viewed as cardiovascular risk factors and targeted for preventive intervention. More research and well-designed studies are needed to completely assess the role of sleep deprivation in the multi-directional relationship between GM and cardiometabolic risk. Full article

Background: Cardiovascular (CV) disease is the leading cause of death in women, but few of them are aware of the CV risks (CVRs). Most women are not aware of all the CV risk factorsand their knowledge often still does not improve their lifestyle. Methods: The Carin Women is a survey conducted among Italian women by filling out a questionnaire in the waiting rooms of clinics. The aim was to determine the level of awareness of women’s cardiovascular risk, knowledge of risk factors, and lifestyle. A total of 5590 questionnaires were completed in two different periods. Results: Median age was 56 (IQR 46–65); BMI was 25 (IQR 22–29). Schooling, marital status, and rate of risk conditions were assessed; 311 women (5.57%) had already suffered a cardiovascular event. The relationship between the CV events and the number of traditional risk factors was significant. A similar curve, but without significant differences, was reported for non-traditional risk factors. From the total number of women, 23% with a high CVR and 62% with a very high CVR underestimated thei risk regardless of their level of education. Up to 43% of women underestimated female CV risk compared to male risk. Women showed a good knowledge of traditional risk factors, but only a few of them had a healthy lifestyle: 21.86% were smokers, only 45.88% performed sufficient physical activity, 27.55% did not recognize they were overweight, and only 30.4% consumed more than two daily portions of fruit and vegetables. Most women (86%) need more information about CVR. Conclusions: Italian women underestimate female CVRs and their own CVR. Full article

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate outcomes of visual acuity (VA) and intraocular pressure (IOP) in proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR)-associated neovascular glaucoma (NVG) in Japanese patients treated with surgical therapies without the use of glaucoma drainage devices. Methods: A retrospective analysis of medical records was conducted for 31 consecutive PDR-associated NVG patients who underwent surgical treatments in our institution between 2013 and 2022. Patient demographics, clinical characteristics, VA, and IOP were recorded at the first and last visits, and surgical procedures, including pars plana vitrectomy with extensive panretinal and ciliary photocoagulation (PPV–PRCP), diode laser trans-scleral cyclophotocoagulation (DCPC), and trabeculectomy with mitomycin C (TLE–MMC), with or without a prior intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) injection, were reviewed. Results: Of the thirty-one PDR patients with NVG, two patients received PPV–PRCP or DCPC alone (6.5%), respectively, three patients received TLE–MMC alone (9.7%), two patients received TLE–MMC after IVB (6.5%), six patients received PPV–PRCP and TLE–MMC (19.4%), seven patients received PPV–PRCP and TLE–MMC after IVB (22.6%), five patients received PPV–PRCP and DCPC and TLE–MMC (16.1%), and four patients received PPV–PRCP and DCPC and TLE–MMC after IVB (12.9%). The VA of two patients (6.5%) deteriorated to no light perception. In all patients, the mean logMAR VA was 1.28 ± 1.05 at the first visit and remained at 1.26 ± 1.08 at the last visit, with no significant change; the mean IOP was 33.0 ± 15.2 mmHg at the initial visit and decreased significantly to 14.0 ± 7.4 mmHg at the last visit. The number of eyes with IOP ≥ 21 decreased from twenty-eight (90.3%) to three (9.7%). Although IOP in patients with IOP > 30 mmHg at the initial visit reduced to a level comparable to that of patients with IOP ≤ 30 mmHg, the IOP > 30 mmHg group received IVB more frequently and had significantly higher logMAR VA at the last visit compared to the IOP ≤ 30 mmHg group. Hypotony (<6 mmHg) was observed in four eyes (12.9%). Conclusions: In PDR patients with NVG, various combinations of PPV–PRCP, DCPC, and TLE–MMC after adjunctive IVB without the use of glaucoma drainage devices lowered IOP sufficiently; for these patients, neovascular regression was observed, with no further deterioration of VA. However, surgical procedures should be performed for PDR patients with NVG before visual impairment occurs. On the other hand, approximately less than 15% of patients developed blindness or low IOP. Introduction: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multidimensional disease; however, the association of another systemic autoimmune disease further complicates its clinical presentation. Aim: We decided to investigate whether the association of overlap syndromes is linked with a different clinical picture compared to pure lupus and whether this association changes the sensitivity of the following commonly used criteria: the 2019 European League Against Rheumatism/American College of Rheumatology (EULAR/ACR), the ACR-1997 and the 2012 Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics (SLICC) criteria. Method: We performed a retrospective observational study among 382 patients afflicted with lupus: we measured as much of the full clinical and laboratory picture as possible in an unselected cohort. The diagnosis of SLE and other systemic autoimmune diseases was established by the rheumatologist in routine care and then the authors compared the characteristics of patients with pure lupus and those with overlapping pathologies. The diagnosis rates were compared to those that were determined based on the three classification criteria in order to identify various sensitivities and whether the existence of an overlap affects their rates. The fulfillment of each set of criteria was calculated using an Excel-based automatic calculation. Results: Among the patients, the ACR 1997′s sensitivity was 81.2% (310 patients), and the SLICC 2012 criteria achieved 94.5% sensitivity (361 patients). The 2019 EULAR/ACR classification criteria resulted in a slightly lower sensitivity (90.3%—345 patients) when compared to the original publication (96%) due to the lower sensitivity of our anti-nuclear antibody (ANA) test (measured via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)). Nearly all ANA-negative (21/22—95%) patients showed a positive lupus-associated antibody test. The proportion of ANA-negative cases showed no significant difference among pure and overlap patients. No significant difference was found between patients with overlap (138 patients—36%) and pure SLE (244 patients—64%) through the use of these criteria, with the exception of the SLICC criteria (ACR: 80.4% vs. 81.6%; SLICC: 97.4% vs. 92.6%, p = 0.035; EULAR/ACR 2019: 91.4% vs. 89.6%). Patients with an overlap syndrome were significantly older (55 vs. 50 years, p = 0.001), more likely to suffer from interstitial lung disease (ILD: 20% vs. 11%, p = 0.0343) and less frequently showed class III/IV lupus nephritis (7% vs. 14%, p = 0.029) when compared with their pure lupus counterparts. Conclusion: All investigated criteria regarding sensitivity were similar to the original publication’s findings. The sensitivity of the EULAR/ACR 2019 classification criterion in cases with overlap syndrome proved excellent, with results very similar to patients afflicted with pure SLE. In the presence of an overlap syndrome, we found significantly fewer patients with lupus nephritis III/IV but no differences in other typical lupus organ manifestation beyond the kidney, whereas we found a higher proportion of ILD in patients with an overlap, indicating that the presence of an overlap syndrome significantly influences the observed clinical picture in real-world conditions. Objectives: A growing body of evidence highlights the effects of air pollution on chronic and acute cardiovascular diseases, such as associations between PM10 and several cardiovascular events. However, evidence of the impact of fine air pollutants on the development and progression of peripheral arterial aneurysms is not available. Methods: Data were obtained from the multicenter PAA outcome registry POPART and the German Environment Agency. Means of the mean daily concentration of PM10, PM2.5, NO2, and O3 concentrations were calculated for 2, 10, and 3650 days prior to surgery for each patient. Additionally, weighted ten-year averages were analyzed. Correlation was assessed by calculating Pearson correlation coefficients, and regression analyses were conducted as multiple linear or multiple logistic regression, depending on the dependent variable. Results: For 1193 patients from the POPART registry, paired air pollution data were available. Most patients were male (95.6%) and received open surgical repair (89.9%). On a regional level, the arithmetic means of the daily means of PM10 between 2000 and 2022 were neither associated with average diameters nor runoff vessels. Negative correlations for mean PAA diameter and mean NO2, as well as a positive correlation with mean O3, were found; however, they were not statistically significant. On patient level, no evidence for an association of mean PM10 exposure over ten years prior to inclusion in the registry and PAA diameter or the number of runoff vessels was found. Weighted PM10, NO2, and O3 exposure over ten years also did not result in significant associations with aneurysm diameter or runoff vessels. Short-term air pollutant concentrations were not associated with symptomatic PAAs or with perioperative complications. Conclusions: We found no indication that long-term air pollutant concentrations are associated with PAA size or severity, neither on a regional nor individual level. Additionally, short-term air pollution showed no association with clinical presentation or treatment outcomes. Full article

This paper presents a comprehensive review of the design and implementation methods of low-power piezoelectric energy harvesting circuits, which in the last few years have gained an extremely large range of applications like the power sources of wearable electronic devices, such as biometrical sensors. Before examining the electronic circuitries of the self-supplied power devices, an overview of the structure, equivalent electrical circuits, and basic parameters of the piezoelectric generators and MEMSs as energy harvesting elements is presented. The structure of energy storage elements (parallel-plate capacitors and thin-film supercapacitors), suitable for this type of application, is also presented. The description of these components from an electrical point of view allows them to be easily workable when connected to the various power conversion electronic circuits. Based on an overview of the structure and the principles of operation, as well as some analytical expressions for energy efficiency evaluation, a comprehensive comparative analysis is presented. Depending on the advantages and disadvantages of the known circuit configurations, the basic electrical and design parameters are systematized in tabular form. Practical realizations of piezoelectric power conversion circuits are also presented in graphic form, ensuring the optimal value of energy efficiency and compactness in the construction of the devices. The Spatiotemporal Expression of SOCS3 in the Brainstem and Spinal Cord of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Mice

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is characterized by the progressive loss of motor neurons from the brain and spinal cord. The excessive neuroinflammation is thought to be a common determinant of ALS. Suppressor of cytokine signaling-3 (SOCS3) is pathologically upregulated after injury/diseases to negatively regulate a broad range of cytokines/chemokines that mediate inflammation; however, the role that SOCS3 plays in ALS pathogenesis has not been explored. Here, we found that SOCS3 protein levels were significantly increased in the brainstem of the superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1)-G93A ALS mice, which is negatively related to a progressive decline in motor function from the pre-symptomatic to the early symptomatic stage. Moreover, SOCS3 levels in both cervical and lumbar spinal cords of ALS mice were also significantly upregulated at the pre-symptomatic stage and became exacerbated at the early symptomatic stage. Concomitantly, astrocytes and microglia/macrophages were progressively increased and reactivated over time. In contrast, neurons were simultaneously lost in the brainstem and spinal cord examined over the course of disease progression. Collectively, SOCS3 was first found to be upregulated during ALS progression to directly relate to both increased astrogliosis and increased neuronal loss, indicating that SOCS3 could be explored to be as a potential therapeutic target of ALS. The Influence of Cytokinin on the Multiplication Efficiency and Genetic Stability of Scutellaria baicalensis Regenerants in In Vitro Culture Conditions

The efficiency and method of regeneration in in vitro culture conditions depend primarily on the plant growth regulators (PGRs) used. Even growth regulators belonging to one group may have different effects, stimulating the process of direct or indirect organogenesis, thus possibly disturbing the genetic stability among regenerants. The main aim of this study was to identify the genetic stability of Scutellaria baicalensis regenerates obtained by in vitro culture method using start codon targeted (ScoT) markers. S.baicalensis nodal explants were regenerated on MS medium supplemented with kinetin (KIN) at concentrations of 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mg × dm−3 or benzylaminopurine (BAP)—0.25, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mg × dm−3. The effects of the number of propagated shoots, length, number of nodes, and fresh mass of regenerants were assessed. Moreover, the genetic stability of the regenerants was analyzed using start codon targeted (SCoT) markers. Direct shoot organogenesis was observed on an MS medium containing kinetin, while indirect shoot induction occurred on an MS medium supplemented with BAP. The highest average number of shoots (3.6) was achieved for the MS + KIN medium at a concentration of 0.25 and 5.8 for the MS + BAP 1.0 medium. The average length and average number of nodes were the highest on the MS + BAP 0.25 medium (50.0 and 6.0, respectively), while the lowest values of these features were observed on the MS + KIN 2.0 medium (40.3 and 4.9, respectively). A total of 111 amplified bands were exhibited by SCoT primers. Three of the analyzed primers revealed four unique genotype-specific markers. The average percentage of polymorphism obtained was 36.7%. The analysis of genetic similarity revealed a high level of genetic similarity between the donor plant and regenerants obtained on MS “0” (medium without the addition of phytohormones). A slightly lower value of genetic similarity was observed for regenerants obtained by direct organogenesis (MS + KIN medium at all concentrations). Indirect shoot organogenesis observed on the MS + BAP medium (all concentrations) resulted in the highest differentiation, both in relation to the donor plant and MS “0” regenerants. The results of our work indicate that, in the case of S. baicalensis, the maintenance of genetic stability depends primarily on the presence of the cytokinin type in the medium. Full article

Worldwide emission standards are now required to cover engine operation under extreme ambient conditions, which affect the raw emissions and the efficiency of the exhaust aftertreatment systems. These regulations also target new combustion technologies for decarbonization, such as neat hydrogen (H2) combustion or dual-fuel strategies, which involve a challenge to the analysis of exhaust aftertreatment system requirements and performance. This work addresses the impact of high altitude and low ambient temperature conditions on the reactivity of an oxidation catalyst in the presence of H2. A reaction mechanism is proposed to cover the main conversion paths of CO, HC, and H2, including the formation and consumption of high-energy surface reaction intermediates. The mechanism has been implemented into a faster-than-real-time reduced-order model for multi-layer washcoat honeycomb catalytic converters. The model was utilized to investigate the effect of H2 concentration on the reactivity of CO and HC within the catalyst under various operating and ambient conditions. By applying the model and examining the selectivity towards different reaction pathways in the presence of H2, insights into surface intermediates and reactivity across different cross-sections of the monolith were obtained. This analysis discusses the underlying causes of reactivity changes promoted by H2 and its relative importance as a function of driving boundary conditions. Full article

Social isolation and loneliness greatly contribute to negative health consequences in older adults. Technological solutions can be an asset in promoting social connections and healthy behaviours. This paper presents an innovative structure for an Internet of Things (IoT) platform specifically tailored for older persons. The framework utilises a supervised learning algorithm to classify users into four identified profiles to facilitate the adoption and engagement of technology. The platform incorporates wearables, such as socks and smart bands, to track physical activity, and a messaging module to encourage social interaction. The platform processes the acquired data to quantify steps and deliver tailored interventions remotely to the older adults through the AGAPE Assistant, the mHealth solution of the platform. Furthermore, the AGAPE Assistant has a user interface design for older adults, with a focus on their specific needs. Additionally, improving digital literacy among older adults is crucial for maximizing the long-term compliance and benefits of such technological solutions. On the other hand, AGAPE Monitor is a web application used by formal caregivers to configure the tailored interventions. The platform’s usability was assessed using different usability scale questionnaires, which revealed a mild level of user satisfaction and acceptance. The proposed framework is currently being deployed on more than 112 older adults across three countries: Italy, Romania, and Portugal. The proposed framework provides a holistic solution to encourage active ageing by adopting technology, implementing hybrid interventions, and promoting social interactions. Full article

This research aims to develop an integrated approach to construction project management by integrating digital technology into monitoring and surveillance operations. Through the use of drones and image processing software, data can be updated regularly and accurately about the progress at the construction site, allowing managers and decision makers to have a clear view of the current situation and make effective decisions based on accurate. In addition, this approach contributes to improving communication and coordination among project team members, as data and images can be easily and effectively shared, reducing opportunities for error and enhancing effective interaction among different parties. Using digital twin technologies, planning and forecasting processes can also be improved, as comprehensive analysis of digital data provides a deeper understanding of project dynamics, identifies potential risks, and enables appropriate preventive measures to be taken. In conclusion, the integration of digital twins and the use of drones in construction projects represent a significant step towards achieving smarter and more efficient management, and successfully achieving the defined goals with greater effectiveness. In the process of completing large-scale and fine-grained sensing tasks for the new generation of crowd-sensing systems, the role of analysis, reasoning, and decision making based on artificial intelligence has become indispensable. Mobile crowd sensing, which is an open system reliant on the broad participation of mobile intelligent terminal devices in data sensing and computation, poses a significant risk of user privacy data leakage. To mitigate the data security threats that arise from malicious users in federated learning and the constraints of end devices in crowd-sensing applications, which are unsuitable for high computational overheads associated with traditional cryptographic security mechanisms, we propose FedCrow, which is a federated-learning-based approach for protecting crowd-sensing data that integrates federated learning with crowd sensing. FedCrow enables the training of artificial intelligence models on multiple user devices without the need to upload user data to a central server, thus mitigating the risk of crowd-sensing user data leakage. To address security vulnerabilities in the model data during the interaction process in federated learning, the system employs encryption methods suitable for crowd-sensing applications to ensure secure data transmission during the training process, thereby establishing a secure federated-learning framework for protecting crowd-sensing data. To combat potential malicious users in federated learning, a legitimate user identification method based on the user contribution level was designed using the gradient similarity principle. By filtering out malicious users, the system reduces the threat of attacks, thereby enhancing the system accuracy and security. Through various attack experiments, the system’s ability to defend against malicious user attacks was validated. The experimental results demonstrate the method’s effectiveness in countering common attacks in federated learning. Additionally, through comparative experiments, suitable encryption methods based on the size of the data in crowd-sensing applications were identified to effectively protect the data security during transmission. In order to effectively solve the problems of the complex growth state of dragon fruit and how the picking process is mostly manual, this study designed a picking and selecting integrated remote-operation-type dragon-fruit-picking device. Based on SOLIDWORKS 2020 software for the three-dimensional digital design and overall assembly of key components, the structure and working theory of the machine are introduced. By improving the high-recognition-rate dragon fruit target detection algorithm based on YOLOv5, better recognition and locating effects were achieved for targets with a small size and high density, as well as those in bright-light scenes. Serial communication, information acquisition, and the precise control of each picking action were realized by building the software and hardware platforms of the picking device control system. By analyzing the working principle of the mechanical system and the mechanics of the machine picking process, the critical factors affecting the net picking rate and damage rate of the dragon-fruit-picking device were confirmed. Based on the force and parameter analysis of the test results, it was confirmed that the machine had an optimal picking influence when the flexible claw closing speed was 0.029 m/s, the electric cylinder extending speed was 0.085 m/s, and the mechanical arm moving speed was 0.15 m/s. The net picking rate of the device reached 90.5%, and the damage rate reached 2.9%. The picking device can complete the picking of a single dragon fruit, as well as a plurality of fruits grown at a growing point, and integrates the integration of picking fruits, removing bad fruits, and sorting fruits, which can improve the efficiency of dragon fruit harvesting and replace manual work. Mechanical condition monitoring data in real engineering are often severely unbalanced, which can lead to a decrease in the stability and accuracy of intelligent diagnosis methods. In this paper, a fault diagnosis method based on the SMOTE + Tomek Link and dual-channel feature fusion is proposed to improve the performance of the sample imbalance fault diagnosis method, taking the piston pump of a turnout rutting machine as the research object. Combining the data undersampling method and the oversampling method to redistribute the collected normal data and fault data makes the diagnostic model have better diagnostic performance in the case of insufficient fault samples. And, in order to fully utilize the global features and local features, a global–local feature complementary module (GLFC) is proposed. Firstly, the generated data similar to the original data are constructed using the SMOTE + Tomek Link method; secondly, the generated data are input into a GLFC module and BiGRU at the same time, the GLFC module extracts the spatial global features and local features of the original vibration data, and BiGRU extracts the temporal information features of the original vibration data, and fuses the extracted feature information, and inputs the fused features into the attention layer; finally, a GLFC module is proposed by the SMOTE + Tomek Link method to make full use of the global features and local features. The extracted feature information is fused, and the fused features are input to the attention layer; finally, the fault classification is completed by the softmax classifier. In this paper, the accuracy and robustness of the proposed model are demonstrated through experiments. Full article

The idle air control actuator is an important device in automotive engine management systems to reduce fuel consumption by controlling the engine’s idling operation. This research proposes an innovative idle air control (IAC) actuator for vehicle applications utilizing shape memory alloy (SMA) technology. The proposed actuator leverages the unique properties of SMAs, such as the ability to undergo large deformations upon thermal activation, to achieve precise and rapid controls in the air intake of automotive engines during idle conditions. The actuator structure mechanism consists of an SMA spring and an antagonistic spring made from steel. The design process utilizes both numerical and analytical approaches. The SMA spring is electrically supplied to activate the opening process of the actuator, and its closing state does not need electricity. However, the PID controller is used to control the applied current, which reduces the time taken by the actuator to achieve the actuation strokes. It shows good operability within multiple numbers of operation cycles. Additionally, the performance of the designed actuator is evaluated through mathematical algorithms by integrating it into the engine’s air intake system during idle operating conditions. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the SMA-based actuator in achieving rapid control of the air intake through bypass, thereby improving engine idle conditions. Full article

In the present study, new series of benzoxazolin-2-one linked to a variety of hydrazones and azoles were synthesized and assessed for their antibacterial properties against different bacterial microorganisms. All the synthesized target compounds were characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR and IR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis as well. The antibacterial activity of the synthesized compounds was evaluated according to the bacteriostatic and bactericidal activity against the tested pathogen strains by determining the minimum inhibition (MIC) and minimum bactericidal (MBC) concentrations and MBC/MIC ratios. The MIC was evaluated by the broth dilution and the MBC was evaluated by plating methods. The in vitro analysis suggested that some compounds, namely, amide, 5-chlorobenzimidazole, hydrazones with a 3-chloro substitution on the additional phenyl ring, and hydrazones with 2-furyl and 5-nitro-2-furyl substituents, demonstrated wide antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella Enteritidis. The most sensitive strains appeared to be Gram-negative E. coli and Gram-positive B. subtilis, while S. aureus showed some resistance. The most resistant pathogen was found to be S. Enteritidis. The remaining compounds demonstrated moderate to low antibacterial potential. The research results have shown that benzoxazolinone-based derivatives are suitable for the development of a library of compounds and can be used in the future development of antibacterial drugs against various Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens, which is of great importance in therapy practice. A coaxial counter-rotating rotor (CCRR), which has two rotors rotating in the opposite directions on the same axis, is seen as a promising technology for low-cost floating tidal current/ocean current power generation using single-point mooring, as the torques of the front and rear rotors are cancelled. In the evaluation and design of such turbines, there is a need for an accurate analysis method with a low computational load that considers the strong mutual induction between the two rotors placed close together. An individual rotor mutual induction (IRMI) method was developed in this study, aiming to significantly reduce the calculation time of conventional computational fluid dynamics (CFD), considering the mutual induction that are not considered in conventional modified blade element and momentum methods. In this method, the basic characteristics of the front and rear rotors are calculated in advance using full-model CFD. In calculations for the CCRR, in addition to these individual characteristics of each rotor, the interaction between the rotors is considered using the actuator disk model CFD calculated in advance. The condition where the torques of the front and rear rotors are cancelled is determined at the same time. This method was used to analyze models in which the front and rear rotors were approximately the same diameter and placed close together (10% of the rotor diameter). A comparison with the mixing plane model CFD revealed that they agree quite well when mutual induction is considered, although both the power and thrust are overcalculated when it is ignored. The simulation time of the IRMI would be almost counter-proportional to the numbers of TSR conditions to solve as compared with the CFD with the MP model. Full article

Total Ankle Replacement (TAR) could, in theory, partially restore joint sensation and motion, enhancing motor coordination, functional stability, and proprioception in a joint affected by osteoarthritis. The aim of this study is to evaluate ankle proprioception before and after a Total Ankle Replacement via an instrumental objective assessment. The evaluation of proprioceptive stability was carried out using the dedicated Delos Postural Proprioceptive System (DPPS). The clinical evaluation was performed by administering validated questionnaires, namely the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) score and Short Form-36 (SF-36). Twenty patients were selected, undergoing a complete procedure with clinical and instrumental pre-operative and post-operative evaluation at the end of the follow-up. AOFAS ankle–hindfoot and SF-36 both showed a statistically significant improvement between the pre-operative and post-operative state. The postural tests performed using the DPPS showed that the affected limb showed results slightly lower than in pre-operative. In conclusion, according to the current data, the TAR does not show an improvement in proprioceptive joint stability, and although the registered mean values do not present a statistical significance, the stabilometry shows data lower than the healthy limb. In this perspective, further studies are recommended to highlight any rehabilitation scheme or protocols, using wider case series. Full article

A Two-Stage Automatic Container Code Recognition Method Considering Environmental Interference

Automatic Container Code Recognition (ACCR) is critical for enhancing the efficiency of container terminals. However, existing ACCR methods frequently fail to achieve satisfactory performance in complex environments at port gates. In this paper, we propose an approach for accurate, fast, and compact container code recognition by utilizing YOLOv4 for container region localization and Deeplabv3+ for character recognition. To enhance the recognition speed and accuracy of YOLOv4 and Deeplabv3+, and to facilitate their deployment at gate entrances, we introduce several improvements. First, we optimize the feature-extraction process of YOLOv4 and Deeplabv3+ to reduce their computational complexity. Second, we enhance the multi-scale recognition and loss functions of YOLOv4 to improve the accuracy and speed of container region localization. Furthermore, we adjust the dilated convolution rates of the ASPP module in Deeplabv3+. Finally, we replace two upsampling structures in the decoder of Deeplabv3+ with transposed convolution upsampling and sub-pixel convolution upsampling. Experimental results on our custom dataset demonstrate that our proposed method, C-YOLOv4, achieves a container region localization accuracy of 99.76% at a speed of 56.7 frames per second (FPS), while C-Deeplabv3+ achieves an average pixel classification accuracy (MPA) of 99.88% and an FPS of 11.4. The overall recognition success rate and recognition speed of our approach are 99.51% and 2.3 ms per frame, respectively. Moreover, C-YOLOv4 and C-Deeplabv3+ outperform existing methods in complex scenarios. Full article
