About this book

This book offers case study of the tridimensional exploration in whole exploration cycle with comprehensive and systematic geological and geophysical studies in the Bongor Basin. Focused on the typical intensively inversed rift basin—the Bongor Basin in Chad, this book establishes petroleum geology model, accumulation model of the typical intensively inversed rift basin and ensemble exploration techniques by studying comprehensively through the lens of structural geology, petrology, geochronology, sedimentology, paleontology, petroleum geochemistry, petroleum geology, and hydrocarbon accumulation dynamics studies on both granite buried hill and sandstone reservoir. Based on the cases in whole exploration cycle and abundant primary research resource (some are first published in public) in the Bongor Basin, this book is a valuable reference for researchers, managers, instructors, and students who engaged in petroleum exploration.

About the authors

Lirong Dou is Executive Vice-President of Research Institute of Petroleum Exploration and Development, CNPC, and Adjunct Professor of Yangtze University. He began his career as petroleum geologist from 1990 and obtained his Ph.D. degrees from Post Graduate School of China Institute of Science in 1994. He was General Manager of CNPC International (Chad) Co., Ltd., Chad (CNPCIC) from 2006 to 2013 and Deputy General Manager, CNPC International (Nile), Sudan; President of Petroenergy EP Co. Ltd. from 2015 to 2018. He has extensive experience of the petroleum exploration around the world and expertise focused on comprehensive study of petroleum geology and exploration in rift basins. During his tenure as General Manager of CNPCIC, based on several giant oilfields discoveries such as Great Baobab, Daniela, and the Precambrian fractured basement oilfields, Bongor basin became an oil-rich basin from no commercial oils basin. Because of his exceptional job in exploration he was awarded First Prize of Science & Technology Progress issued by State Council in China, 2003 and Second Prize, 2005; Grand Officer by Chadian President, 2011; Prize for Science and Technological Innovation by HO LEUNG HO LEE FOUNDATION, 2012, Jules Braunstein Memorial Award by American Association of Petroleum Geology, 2016, and Sun Yueqi Energy Science and Technology Award, 2019. He has published 3 monographs and 61 papers in rift basins exploration, buried hills reservoir and international risk exploration.

Kunye Xiao is a professor-level senior engineer and obtained Ph.D. in Geology. He is Manager of Dept. of African Petroleum E&P of Research Institute of Petroleum Exploration and Development, CNPC. He obtained his Ph.D. degrees from China University of Geosciences, Beijing in 2004. He has more than 20 years’ experience in petroleum exploration and geology study. He was awarded First Prize of Science & Technology Progress issued by State Council in China, 2003 and Second Prize, 2005; Sun Yueqi Energy Science and Technology Youth Award, 2007, and 6 first prizes of China Provincial and Ministerial Award for Science and Technology Progress. As co-author, he published 31 papers and monographs in petroleum risk exploration.

Jingchun Wang is a professor-level senior engineer. He is Manager of Dept. of Exploration of CNPC International (Chad) Co., Ltd., Chad (CNPCIC). He began his career as an geophysicist from 1995 in China. Based on his long time field work, 7 years in Sudan and 12 years in Chad, a large amount of first-hand information were available. He was awarded 2 first prizes of China Provincial and Ministerial Award for Science and Technology Progress and Outstanding Young Innovative Talents of CNPC, 2016. As co-author, he published 12 papers and monographs in petroleum risk exploration.
