A simple method is described for increasing the lifetimes for several crystals of proteins and viruses during collection of high-resolution X-ray diffraction data on film. Crystals are mounted in a capillary filled with mother liquor, with cotton lint fibers nested against them to prevent movement. Some results and limitations of the method are discussed.
